I understand. If you ask me, Microsoft should make Win8 ISOs downloadable the same as Win7. And Samsung should provide Win8 install media with new PCs (as they used to do with Win7). If that were the case, we would not have to be so restrictive.
And please don't think we're making it our job here on NBR to enforce or defend Microsoft's policy on this. But as long as Microsoft restricts download of Windows 8, sharing Win8 factory images has to be considered a breach of their copyright. And we cannot put NBR at risk legally by allowing the forum to be used in that process. That's all this is.
Thank you for understanding.
If the Samsung Picks you are looking for is not enabled through the Product Key, then it has to be software of some kind. Microsoft wouldn't let them just replace the Store with their own Samsung version in the factory image. You could use Find Model in SW Update to look up a recent Win8 model (such as NP880Z5E-X03CA) and download some of the Win8 bloatware to see if it is contained in there. I always skip that stuff.

So the official release of 8.1 is only a week away.
I'm currently running 7, but bought 8 when it came out, should I upgrade to 8 now and then get the free upgrade to 8.1, or will I be able to upgrade direct to 8.1?
Should I do a clean install of 8 or just upgrade from 7?

Anyone up and running with 8.1 on a Series 9 yet? Tips?

Was just coming to ask the same question, and any word on when Samsung will release updated drivers and settings? -
On the subject on Win 8.1, please see the sticky thread we just posted about it.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sam...pgrade-until-samsung-has-updated-drivers.html
Even though there is likely to be some issues unique to individual models (particularly relating to graphics drivers) the basic incompatibilities between Win 8.1 and existing Samsung drivers, Settings and SW Update are common to all Samsung models. We're trying to gather experiences and updates about that instead of having it mushroom across all the individual threads (as is currently happening). -
The ELAN driver that comes with Windows 8.1 doesn't remember its settings after a reboot. I fixed that by re-installing a driver I had lying around, Touchpad_10.7.17.5.zip. That one remembers its settings although it seems to be missing the three finger down swipe down task-switch or the four-finger to desktop. It does have the three finger swipe up to open Explorer though, go figure.
Other than that, keyboard backlight, function keys, screen brightness, airplane mode, Settings, IRST, all seems to work so far. -
Restored the W8 image I made back in Jan on my X3B! Downloaded 1GB of updates. Installed. Attempted install of W8.1, 4GB!, second time the charm. Added settings, a few drivers, keyboard functions working. I want to be able to wake from hibernation by opening the lid. Can I do this in W8 native or do I need IRST still? IRST does not want to install on W8...
-
IRST works fine in W8 and W8.1. You need to make sure you install the IRST partition correctly first, did you do that? Have a look at this thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sam...el-rapid-start-technology-26.html#post9345230
Then you can install the latest IRST 3.0 utility you can download from Intel.
Waking up from hibernation by opening the lid is not a function of IRST, it's in the BIOS. Have you by any chance updated to the P06 bios? When I updated to that one it broke the lid wake from hibernation functionality, I had to rollback to the P05 BIOS to have it work again. -
Ok, I found something that doesn't seem to work in Windows 8.1, it's Intel WiDi. I grab the latest graphics and WiFi drivers directly from Intel and they install without any issues, but then when I check the device properties they still show the old versions (looks like it's the versions that come with 8.1). Then when I install the latest Windows 8.1-compatible WiDi it says my OS is not compatible. Windows 8.1 does let me try to add a wireless display, but then it complains that my LG TV is not Windows-certified. It worked fine with WiDi before.
I'm curious to see if drivers that come from SW Update in the future fix this issue. I downloaded the latest SW Update and it still doesn't detect my laptop model or find any 8.1 drivers. -
I upgraded to 8.1 and on reboot, I briefly saw that two drivers were out of date - one was graphics and the other was wifi (I think). I also had to reinstall the touchpad driver because two fingered scroll was no longer working.
WHat I am trying to find is the intel graphics driver update - The screens have a 'fuzzy' appearance to them now....? -
-
-
there are two steps. first, before w8.1 install, Update BIOS, drivers to the latest ones.
then, Do windows Update and Install w8.1
second, after installing w8.1, By SW Update, Install the latest BIOS, drivers same as before.
then, Do Windows Update.
hope it helps -

In Win 8 everything worked except the keyboard back-light. In Win 8.1 the same happens. It is amazing that when I bought the Laptop, the keyboard back-light worked, but after some application updates it stopped.
In win8.1 all Samsung Applications (e.g. Settings) work as before. Hints on how I could make the keyboard back-light work in in Win8.1 is welcome. -
@LusoSpikes: Thank you for the update, glad to hear it is working. It would be great if you can post your findings in that Win 8.1 thread I linked (and which you quoted) to help fill in the picture of what works and what doesn't.
-
I recently upgraded to Win8.1 on my N900X4C and after install it wouldn't go to sleep when I closed the lid, neither shut down (only went back to login screen) and if I pressed the power button nothing happened. So long story short, I ended up rolling back to Win8 on last friday and now everything works as it should again...

Does anyone know if one can just pull out a key from the keyboard without breaking it? My Enterkey seems broken, feels like something is stuck under the key but I don't know if I can just remove it to clean the space under it.
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
I would first try using some canned air to blast under the key.
Update: See this new thread. The keycaps are definitely removable.

I am receiving a message that a hotkey utility is missing and that the hotkey is Radio HID Mini. How can I find this to download it?

Hi everyone.
3 weeks ago I bought an X4D-A02US. This is the i7/256/8 Model. I found it manufacturer refurbished for 1100 USD and I just couldn't resist the deal. This model comes with the windows 7 Pro which I almost immediately upgraded to win 8. Everything worked properly (hot keys, display, back lighting, wifi etc.) and after reading this thread, despite my better judgement I decided on updating to win 8.1.
Well, 10 days later I can proudly report that everything still works perfectly fine. I updated all drivers and I can't find a single thing that doesn't work properly so I wanted this to be a counterweight to all the people who found parts of their hardware not working after the update.
Also, I wanted to thank all the posters on these forums as I stalked these forums quite a bit before I bought this laptop and I couldn't be happier with it.Dannemand likes this. -
Regarding my "broken" Enterkey: I just pulled it off via a small knife (applied a little pressure until it went off), cleaned the surface below and reattached it. All problems solved - it was really easy.

It is possible that your 8.1 update proceeded smoothly because there wasn't time for Windows 8 and drivers to get cluttered with lots of intermediate updates.

And thank you for being a one man encyclopedia on these forums.
You might be right about your diagnosis. I must admit I wasn't attentive enough following the comments but It may be a UEFI Windows issue? Mine isn't UEFI but I don't even know if the series 9 supports it. -
A big reason you had a smoother ride is that your model doesn't have discrete graphics. The models that have a separate AMD GPU and switchable graphics (which is really a hack) have generally had far more issues than the ones with just the integrated Intel HD4000.
Also, since your model came with Win7, that means UEFI was disabled (and it only has limited UEFI support anyway). That could be another reason why you had a smoother ride. I think that was what you meant.
Either way, good job there. Enjoy your lovely Series 9 laptopgosha100 likes this. -
Thanks Dannemnd. If I may, out of curiosity regarding the X4D:
1. Is there a hardware difference between the models shipped with Win 7 and the ones shipped with Win 8?
2. Is it the same BIOS between the two versions with just UEFI enablen on the latter?
3. Are there other (older\newer\different) BIOS versions for the laptop and how would I go about finding them?
4. I noticed Inetl's XTU and RMclock utilities don't allow for any overclocking/undervolting on this machine and no documentation I could find on the subject, what is the reason for this? -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
1. No hardware difference in terms of the electronics. The X4D shares the same boards as the X4C but uses unpainted magnesium alloy instead of painted aluminium.
2. The BIOS is different between versions shipped with Windows 7 (PxxAAC BIOS with UEFI disabled) and shipped with Windows 8 (PxxABK BIOS and shipped with UEFI enabled).
3. AFAIK the newest BIOS in the AAC Series is P06AAC (the full file name is ITEM_20130219_1005_WIN_P06AAC) and the newest in the ABK series is P10ABK (full name ITEM_20131114_21268_WIN_P10ABK). You can use the method described here to get the files.
4. RMClock hasn't worked with several generations of recent Intel CPUs. Intel decided to make things difficult for the users.

Thank you for taking the time to reply! I'm not planning on changing anything but I want to know my options if I ever want/have to.

Your notebook version may not have the latest drivers / software listed but you can use the Find Model option in SW Update to look at what is offered for other versions of your notebook.
There is also a specific thread about Adaptive Brightness issues.

Hi,
From 2 days I have strange problem with keyboard, exaclty capsLock, I have to tun on to write in small letters, anyone know how to fix it? -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
First try tapping each shift key a few times to make sure it is moving up and down OK and, if that doesn't fix the problem then go round the edge of each key with some thin card trying to lift it up slightly and make sure it can move freely in the hole.
John -
I wonder if one of the shift keys is sticking. Shoft + CapsLock = lower case.
This 2 keys click at the same time, helped
edit
problem still exist :/ I tried all you metoth, but it didn't help.
I think that with shift button is okey, because when I press SHIFT I will get small letters when caps lock is ON -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
You can check the keyboard settings in Control Panel > Ease of Access Center > Make the keyboard easier to use although I can't seen an option to keep CapsLock turned on.
It's also possible that some joke malware is causing the problem. Try scanning with MalwareBytes and Spybot S&D. If the CapsLock light is not turned on then I wonder if the problem is software, not hardware.
John -
MalwareBytes didn't find anything, Spybot S&D I didn't try, because it is paid version, but OTL helped me

Hey guys. I was wondering if anybody had any issues with windows update/defender after updating to windows 8.1. I cant seem to scan against windows server update service for some unknown reason. I got np900x4c-a07us, I used the latest kb2919355 but the only remedy that I could find so far is to uninstall it. Does anyone have problem with updates after windows 8.1?

I presume you have studied all the links. If nothing there works then you'll have to consider first the windows repair options and ultimately the drastic solution of reinstalling Windows and starting again. Sometimes that's the only way of flushing out a minor corruption.

Hi guys! I need help. Last March I bought Samsung ativ book 9 (np900x3g-k02). I immediately noticed a small issue with the sound system: when the volume is higher than, say, 20% the sounds that comes out of the speakers become metallic and distorted. Using the test sound from the Control Panel, I realized that it is only the right speaker to have this problem, the audio from the left one is clear.
I tried to update the drivers (High Definition Audio Codecs - Realtek) to the last version from the manufacturer website, but nothing changed. I also contacted the warranty center and they accepted to change the speaker, and they said they replaced the left one. However now that I got it back, nothing seems to be changed to me: the sound from the right speaker is still distorted!
Any advice? Anyone had a similar problem?
Thank you in advance for your help!
