The unknown device is the 'Airplane Mode Control Driver'. I'll see if I can find where I downloaded it from and post it later.

I downloaded and installed the Samsung "Quick Starter" - a "Start Button" replacement for the Windows 7 Start Button in Windows 8. I find the user interface is a bit "odd", but the biggest issue was that it really bogged down the system, completely halting it for 10-20 seconds at a time. I've uninstalled it now.

I found this: Start8 Start8 for Windows® 8 - Bringing back the Windows Start menu

It's an amazing start button replacement for Windows 8 - more features than the one in Windows 7 had, and is, IMHO, perfect! It's not free, but it's only $4.99 (almost free :) )

You can try a 30-day free trial as well.

I have it installed now, and it's working great.

    Thanks for your good work!!!

One of your "Unknow Device" perhaps is USB3, and you need the drives for this ports.

btb32: Thanks for the info, and let me know if you can get your hands on the driver. If you can't find it, can you give me the inf or something? The only mention of "Airplane Mode Control Driver" I can find is this thread.

    Carlos07pt: Nope, not USB3.

Do you have .NET framework installed? I think you need the 3.5 SP1, which is not present on the original Windows 8

Is the Cyberlink Youcam camera driver available from Samsung or does it come with Windows 8? I know it wasn't available for download from the website for Windows 7.

I'm not too sure what you're suggesting here - the device I'm trying to find the driver for is not the USB3 controller... so it's not an issue of being able to run the installer required .NET 3.5. Thanks though.

Cyberlink Youcam is not the driver for the webcam - it's the third-party software suite bundled with the laptop. The webcam is recognized by Win8 out of the box, but AFAIK you can't get the Youcam software without using the included restore media.

    Thanks for that.

    Another question -

Since the Windows 8 install, the difference between my min and max brightness is 1 level, even if I slide the bar all the way up or down. And the max brightness is extremely low, I can't use it outside anymore.

    Anyone had this issue?

Edit: Fixed it - the auto brightness feature was causing issues

I couldn't find it again on the Samsung site, so I've uploaded it here for you. Its 1.9Mb zipped up, but exceeds the site limit for a zip attachment, so I can't uplaod it here.. If you want to pm me your email I'll send it to you.

It controls the hardware switch for Airplane mode, also known as 'Radio HID Mini-driver'

    Hello,

I have been running Windows 8 since the day the RTM was realeased and everything worked just fine. Two days ago Samsung SW update popped up with the suggestion to update a whole bunch of stuff like the BIOS and display drivers. Happily surprised to discover that Samsung seems to be supporting Windows 8 allready I proceeded with the updates only to discover that the display brightness now cannot be changed anymore: It is stuck on it's brightest level which, on this notebook, is very, very bright.
Can anybody help me? I allready contacted Samsung but the only thing they can say is that I have to update the display driver with the version on their website (which would be a downgrade since the version on their website is from April 2012).
I'm really stuck here, is there anybody here who experienced similar behaviour?

YOu need to download the Intel display driver - that fixes that problem. Check out my post http://forum.notebookreview.com/samsung/683577-samsung-series-9-windows-8-a-8.html#post8911613 of this thread for the URL.

I have the NP900X3C with the integrated intel hd graphics 4000 - if you have a different model/graphics adapter, you may need to search Intel's site for the one that's right for you.

That driver was for Windows 8 64 bit - you may want to search from here:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng

As for Quick Start, it took me a long time of trying to get it to download - but once it did, it caused significant problems with the OS - lots of delays. Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend it.

I ended up buying this: Start8 for Windows® 8 - Bringing back the Windows Start menu for $4.99. It seems to work very nicely, and is much better than the Samsung "QuickStart" program.

You must be running Intel WiDi - I don't have WiDi running on my NP900X3C-A04US. Try going into Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Esc) and killing the WiDi process.

The only thing I can think of is to go into System Configuration ( Run Selective Startup using System Configuration) and doing a "Diagnostic Startup". That won't load anything other than necessary services. You can try loading the Intel graphics driver once you've rebooted with minimal services.

I was trying to run Samsung Recovery and even after trying to run it as an Administrator - I get a message saying that I don't have the authority??

Edit: I did find a conflict with a Windows 6.0? But didn't get enough information to determine exactly what it was - I'm trying a PC Refresh, to see if that solves the problem.

There's also a windows.old - can this be safely deleted?

As it turns out - the pc refresh, seems to have deleted a WHOLE LOT of apps & quite a few drivers?

    Anyone else have this happen?

Edit - Again - Seems like the pc refresh also affected my product key! Spent the last 3+ hours on the phone with ms - finally the "solution" was to download the o/s again! Not happy!

I was told that ms is very sensitive to illegitimate copies - fine, but I paid for mine & used one of their features to reinstall the o/s! But ms servers "determined" that I was running the key on more than one system - NOT the case - it's the same pc that I made the upgrade with - I truly hope that this is a "one off" system error on their part!! But scares me to try a PC Refresh ever again! :banghead::banghead: :(

Suddenly, my two finger scroll and my left/right swipe gestures no longer work on my 900X3C. Any ideas as to why? I tried to restore system to earlier point but that didnt seem to do the trick. I also made sure the proper check marks were in the touchpad gui as supposed to be.

Edit: Restarted elan driver from the program files and voila!

    Hi guys,
probably stupid question, but isn't my serial the "product key" in the system menu? I bought mine SS9 on july 18 from Amazon and now want to upgrade do W8 for 15$. But when I have to enter my product key in the "www.windowsupgradeoffer.com" it's just too short and it's not accepting it. Where can be the problem?
    Thank you in advance.

You need to find the product key under the bottom of the laptop. The key you saw on System Properties was generated using the product key at the bottom of you machine.

    Hey guys,

so I just got my NP900X3C 13 inch, and really want to do the $14.99 upgrade to Win8, whist keeping the important Samsung pre-installed features.
Summarising the info on this thread, could someone pretty please take me through what I need to do after I upgrade, i.e. how do I get easy settings back working on windows 8, and any other intel software that "I probably should have" (like all the intel bluetooth programs)?

I only ask this because the methods for doing this might be different than those outlined earlier on in this thread, now the full version of Win8 has been released (and I really don't want to be stuck not being able to change my brightness/sound/wifi/etc.)

    Thanks a bunch

It is really quite easy. Upgrade your operating system and then download Samsung Download Center. from this link. It has all updated drivers and the updated Easy Settings which is now just Settings.

Re: those cache errors talked about in the Series 9 thread,
Just for the record, on my Series 7, I often get "The Clipboard could not be emptied" popup errors after Ctrl+C in various programs including but not limited to Excel. Might be a Windows 8 too-aggressive problem somewhere. Wouldn't surprise me if it's Windows 8 memory problem and not a driver issue.

(But my clipboard works as expected... just with an extra popup error sometimes)

    Hi!

I am thinking of upgrading to Windows 8. I wonder what do the partitions that are hidden (Hibernation and Recovery)? Should I keep or just delete?

Second, it is best to do a clean install, formatting the hard disk beforehand and delete all partitions. Or go before the upgrade method of maintaining applications that are compatible with Windows?

    Thanks!

Just upgraded to Windows 8 on my 900X3A noticing a LARGE drop in battery life while others are reporting that their battery life improved. Also, my FN brightness keys were working and now are not (same with KB brightness, volume seems ok). Uninstalled the 'Settings' software with no luck. Also installed the Intel drivers that someone posted on here and that didn't work either.

Anybody have any ideas? Mostly concerned with the battery life. It dropped 3% in about 3 mins (5% wear) while just browsing the web.

    Thanks!

My brightness issued seem fixed after I changed the Power Options away from "Samsung Optimized" to "Balanced" and re-adjusted the individual settings.

I think the Samsung Optimized profile hides a few settings that matter, under [Advanced Settings] -> [Display]; specifically the options for "display brightness", "dimmed display brightness" and "enable adaptive brightness".

I'm using a Series 7 and a pre-build of Windows 8, but I've been following this thread for Windows 8 issues and it seems to be consistent.

I can still adjust the brightness, just not with the function keys so I'm at lowest brightness. The last drivers I installed were 15.28.7.64.2867.

@thefamf I do not have the Samsung Optimized as a power setting actually. I'm running on balanced right now with adaptive brightness off so I can set it on the lowest setting.

    1. What is CPU usage according to Task Manager?
    2. What is CPU speed according to HWiNFO? Does it spend most / all of the time at 800MHz?

Who already installed the windows 8 could tell me what you did to these two partitions (hibernation and recovery) that are hidden on the hard drive and take up space?

And preferable to delete before installation or after? Once someone knows how to install the recovery partition?

    Thanks

What about the Fn keys to adjust keyboard brightness, do those work in Windows 8, and does it take extra work to enable them?

My function keys do work, but didn't initially. Today I have a different problem. I used to be able to swipe from the left or right, or from the top down or the bottom up, to activate charms bar, switcher, and whatever it's called that shows open web pages, but for whatever reason, it no longer works.

As much as Windows 8 looks nice, I'm starting to regret installing it. My series 9 worked flawlessly before windows 8.

Any one else have touchpad issues using the swipe commands to activate charms bar or the other features such as switcher?

    John,

Where do I check the CPU speed in HWiNFO? Also, what would an optimized speed show?
