    Hi!

Could someone explain to me clearly how many partitions behind the samsung laptops when it comes from manufacturing???

I make a backup with clonezilla and verify that is four. Is this correct?

    Thanks

My Windows 7 Series 9 has:
    (i) Boot partition
    (ii) Windows partition
    (iii) Recovery partition
(iv) Hibernation partition (for Intel Rapid Start Technology (IRST)).

I don't know if Windows 8 uses IRST or Windows 8 own improved hibernation and, if the latter, whether it uses a hibernation partition instead of a file. Disk Management will identify the partitions.

Thanks for the reply! I did upgrade my system to Windows 8 and continues with the same partitions.

How do I know exactly which system hibernation that windows 8 is the use? Delete the Hibernation partition? Is has 9 Gbytes,

    Best regards

Check if IRST is running under Windows 8. The first place to look is in the Windows 8 equivalent of Control Panel > Programs and Features. If it is not there and you are happy with the Windows 8 hibernation / resume performance then you can delete the hibernation partition.

@ People who upgraded from Win 7 and did a clean install

Did you nuke the whole drive during installation, or did you just use the default Windows partition?

How does intel's rapid start tech compare to Windows 8 (fast) hibernate?

I used the default windows partition and i have no problems. I think that have installed and working windows hibernate and it is very fast.

I did not installed the intel´s rapid start tech, and i thinking to clean the old partition (hibernation) from windows 7 and not use the IRST.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just nuke the whole drive then.

How long have you found to start up again after hibernation? How does this compare to sleep?

Don't nuke the whole drive until you have made a backup of the recovery partition or, as a minimum, use Samsung Recovery Solution to make some recovery discs and use the guidance here to make a utility for recreating the recovery partition.

Thanks! Seems to have fixed all the cache issues with firefox and chrome. I still don't understand how a software that's nothing more than a bunch of faqs could cause all these problems.

I'd say a few milliseconds are the time it takes to reboot after hibernation. To sleep is the same, very fast.

Same here - original factory Win 8, uninstalling Samsung support solved Chrome and Firefox problems with incomplete loading of pages - after I had already torn out most of my hair.

Yeah, I'm planning on cloning the whole drive before I do anything. Thanks for the heads up though.
A few milliseconds is too fast to be true, but I understand. Thanks

I guess this is why I never see the issue. I would never install their support software on my clean Windows install. The last thing I need is to give someone remote access to my machine.

Hi, i am back here because i still have troouble with my 900X3A running Windows 8 with the backlight keyboard, the hibernation and also the F2 and F3 key to adjust luminosity of the screen.

Please apologize for my English because i am french.

After did a clean install of Windows 8, then Windows update and SW update at the end, i have 3 mains problems:

    - First, the backlight keyboard: the F7 and F8 are not working to adjust the level of illumination of the keyboard, it is like the backlight keyboard is automatic, turns on when luminosity is weak but immediatly i put a light on the sensor the backlight keyboard turns off. But when it is on i can't adjust the level of luminosity.

    - The luminosity of the screen: when i am running on battery, automatically the level of luminosity is lowest than when it is plugged on. even if i try to increase the luminosity i can't go futher than half the luminosity of the full luminosity i can have when the 900X3A is plugged ton power.

    - Then when i close the computer it goes to hibernation (not very fast, it takes about 5 to 8 seconds after i closed the screen).
When i open the screen, nothing happen, the power light is flashing but if i want to Wake up the computer i have to press power (even enter doesn't make anything).

Also the FN+F6 is not working on Windows 8 to adjust the power plan.

I have also noticed that the light of the mute touch (F9) is not working on Windows 8 ??! i can't understand why.

Is someone can help me about these problems ? is-it the same things for those who ahave the "new series 9 (900X3C for example after going on Windows 8 ?)

    Thank you
What can i do about these things ?

Does somebody knows how to tweak the Samsung SW Update utility so it stops sending me popups almost daily to install software..

Now I get often notifications about updates for programs that are not installed and I don't want to install (like IntelliMemory or Norton crap). These are shown at the "All software" section.

I do not mind to get a popup message when there is a driver or other program that is installed that can be updated. Those are shown at the "Update" section.

You probably missed the bios update, it fixes most of the problem you are describing.

Unfortunately FN+F6 won't work on Windows 8 even after the bios update.

The screen backlight luminosity is set to "automatic" on batteries by default. You have to switch is back to manual in the power settings

    Good luck !

Does Windows 8 have the equivalent of Windows 7's option to customize the icons in the notification area? Set S Agent to "Hide Icon and Notifications".

How can i do this bios update on my 900X3A from Windows 8 ?
I know how to do it from Windows 7 but it seems on Windows 8 Samsung did not create any programs like we had on Windows 7.

After having 8 installed since the release, I don't have any problems. The function buttons work for me just fine. FN + F6 even brings up the mute graphic onscreen.

Setting the property to hide icon and notifications didn't prevent the Samsung popup. Apparently they aren't using the Windows guidelines for that sort of thing.

Hi guys, I have a series 9 that came with windows 8 preloaded. Im cant install nero burning rom 12 on the system. The installer just terminates itself during installation and stated the was an error and the program was not installed. I wonder what could have caused this. Could it be any programs that conflict with nero.

As requested here are my two views of SW Update and settings. I didn't see anything as to why I don't have a backlight function... Have you done the BIOS update?

How the heck do I get my backlight to work? It just doesn't work. Period.

It should be prompted by SW Update, at least that was the case on mine.

If it does not, have a look on the Samsung website, maybe you can download it manually over there. Otherwise I suggest you to contact Samsung support.

You are probably not running the NP900X3A, this model maps the power plan swapping on FN+6 but that does not work on mine. Not a big deal though :p

The 6 cell battery supplied with the X3B is known for premature wear. Use HWiNFO or similar program to check the battery wear and if it more than about 35% then ask Samsung for a replacement before your warranty expires. If the wear is not more than 25% then fully charge it, run the battery calibration in the BIOS (advanced menu) then fully recharge it and look again.

And continue this discussion in the X3B thread.

    Hey!

This is my first posting in this forum. After i bought a 900X3C A02DE a couple of days ago, i immediately ugraded it to Windows 8 (after a full disk image of the stock partitions etc...)

Things run fine so far but i am unable to use the brightness hotkeys. I read the whole thread here and tried to disable automatic brightness, installed new drivers etc but i can't get it to work.

Also i am unable to try the trick with dmhkcore.exe because i cannot obtain the file...easy settings just won't install on my machine (even with compatibility mode enabled)...so i am stuck with the new settings app...

Do you have any suggestions how to get my brightness keys working?

    Thanks in advance!

You need pretty minimal Samsung software to get everything working. You do however need to install the Samsung Software update application because it's a good tool to show what is available. I DO NOT recommend letting it automatically install everything.

You also need to install the Samsung Easy Settings application.

Here are the apps I installed:

I am not sure. Here is another view of the software I installed but with the details on the version numbers.

    np00x3d-a02us_installed.jpg

I have not updated the BIOS on this machine. It is still P02ABK (9/19/2012).

Do all of the other function keys work? Just the brightness doesn't?

    Thanks for your reply!

Everything except the Wifi control hotkey and brightness. I've adapted my setup to your installed software and drivers, but there is no success. But i am able to control brightness via Windows 8 Settings, so i assume that it's just the hotkey that is not responding...

I am using the latest Bios, it was preinstalled on my computer...i guess i will have to wait for samsung to release some updates. (calling support will be useless as they will always recommend the restore everything option... ;))

I think you need to install settings, not easy settings.

    Settings for Win 8

    Easy Settings for Win 7

I have been having a little issue recently with my Wifi dropping out on win 8 every other day. I troubleshoot it and it comes back with problem with wireless adapter or access point that it fixed then its ok again. Do you think i should roll back the driver for it or wait, as I think Microsoft have released lots of updates for win 8 recently.

I have the exact same problem. I reinstalled Windows 8 and now I don't have fn brightness and wifi keys and my ambient light sensor doesn't work either. I've installed everything through sw update, tried to install easy settings from win7 through the setup2 trick and installed new intel graphics drivers and nothing has worked. If anyone has any other ideas, I'd be happy to hear them.
    *EDIT* I have a 900x3c

Since a recent Windows update I keep getting the following error message every time I turn on my laptop,

Support Center Agent has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
    "Close program"

I have tried removing and reinstalling Support Center Agent but it is still happening.

    Is anyone else getting this?

I guess it's time to run some battery tests on my NP900X3D so we'll have some other data points. I can tell you before doing so that the NP900X3D I have has always done what I needed it to do so I am more than satisfied Windows 8 is performing well on it.

Unless you guys have empirical evidence and personal experience, please keep the hearsay to a minimum.

Yea, that's what I figured. The article doesn't take machines and run them first with one OS, then turn around and run another OS on the same machine. How do you make an objective comparison unless you do the tests on the same machine and keep the testing methodology as equal as possible?

At least the author does acknowledge a touch screen might cause additional power consumption. Der.

I noticed maybe a thirty minute increase when I upgraded to Windows 8 from 7. I did try calibrating the battery last week. Wear was suddenly at 6%, but after calibration it is still 6%. I don't know if that's problematic. I keep the laptop plugged in mostly. It is at 34 charge cycles right now.

It would have been better if we the comparison is on the same laptop. However, the article also shows that Windows 8 at least has not improved in battery efficiency! This is because, with some of the touch laptops, it has worsened significantly and on Acer Aspire S7 it is identical. I would expect a battery life increase when an OS has better performance but it seems it is not actually the case. Less battery life for touch PCs is another turnoff for touch too.

    What is your laptop model?

There is nothing in the article about the Samsung Series 9 so it doesn't belong in this thread. There are no Samsung's in the article for that matter.

Please take the discussion elsewhere. Thanks.

But the article talks about Ultrabooks and Windows 8. Samsung Series 9 or other Samsung notebooks use the same hardware and software. So we can learn from it.
