The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

It's great to see members helping each other out. But do note that the Recovery disc (and Recovery partitions) contains copyrighted Windows software. In the case of Win7, that is no problem, since Microsoft made those ISOs publicly available for download on Digital River.

But for some stupid reason, Microsoft has not done the same with Win8 and Win 8.1. So any sharing is technically piracy -- even though you still need a Product Key to activate it.

What you do in the privacy of your own homes is none of our business. But in order to protect NBR from Microsoft's lawyers, we have to ask that you do not use the forum to discuss or facilitate such sharing. And of course we do not condone it either.

That's why our forum rules state the following -- in boldface, even:

I apologize for being such a stickler, but zero-tolerance and all...

That's the whole point with the zero tolerance policy: Everybody here feel they have a better understanding of the law than Microsoft's lawyers, but we don't want to even attract their attention in the first place. As long as they don't want to share their software freely, NBR is not in the business of challenging that and defending it in court. You get that viewpoint?

I'm trying to do this as nicely as possible, even though I personally share the feeling that it shouldn't be an issue when activation codes are still required.

It's actually very simple: Those forum rules are the standard. Period. They exist to facilitate a daily conversation between tens of thousands of members, and make sure it remains enjoyable and useful for the large majority and doesn't put the site at risk.

Moderators here are members like everybody else, volunteering some time to read all posts as they come through, and apply those rules when necessary. Occasionally a post slips through that shouldn't have, but mostly the moderators are in agreement when a case is reported.

Listen, don't worry, nothing sinister happened here: Bronsky had a problem and you offered to help, which is what NBR is all about. Factory images and windows software just happens to be one of those tricky areas, and I had to ask that you don't post information that can put NBR at risk. That's all.

No fingers were slapped, no infractions or warnings were issued, no reports were filed. I apologize if my post gave a more serious impression, that was not my intention.

    Now let's move on.

Just got back to this thread. Wow. Didn't mean to cause a bunch of trauma. @HopelesslyFaithful certainly didn't mean for you to take a beating for me. Sorry.

The bottom line for future owners with problems like this is that Samsung sent me a recovery disk free of charge (not even shipping). My problem was the amount of time it took to get to the right person who even knew that recovery media was available for this model notebook. The number to call in the US, at least, is 1-800-726-7864.

I purchased a generic 7800mah made-in-China replacement on ebay last month. It lifted the back of the laptop about a half an inch which I was okay with because it improved the laptop's position for typing. However, it created a "see saw" effect where the laptop, when sitting on a table, would want to fall back. It was annoying but not the reason I decided to return it. The big problem was that the battery would randomly disconnect and shutdown/reboot the laptop. Here is the ebay listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/351133362276?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
(It says 6600mah but they actually ship a 7800mah)
