Hi Guys,
Lately I've been considering Asus UX32VD & Gigabyte U2442N, but a few days ago my friends told me about this SAMSUNG NP730U3E-S01ID & I think I'm sold to this... I live in Indonesia & the product still in the pre order stage, does anybody have it already?
Here is the link for the product in Samsung Indonesia Series 7 Intel Ultrabook - OVERVIEW | SAMSUNG

NP740U3E (touch screen version) is listed at Best Buy.

I havent seen the 8570 gpu version anywhere. maybe it will come with the haswell update. the 8550 will not be faster than the integrated graphics, so there has to be an update...wouldnt see a benefit otherwise...
something else: the 730u3e will not come with a truly matte display and will have a keyboard with minor quality when compared to the series 9 (german cebit video):
CeBIT: Samsung Series 7 Ultra 730U3E Ultrabook im Hands-on | Mobilegeeks.de | Net-/Ultrabooks -
if the 900x3e wouldnt come with only a 300nit display (likely to not screw up battery life because of the fhd display's increased consumption)....i would go for that one....
but Samsung's marketing experts are not stupid - its not their aim to design a labtop that keeps you satisfied for 3 years. for the same reason we will not see thunderbolt too soon... -
I picked up the BestBuy version today - first impression is that the build quality is very nice.
I am going to play with it tomorrow (traveling today) and will take the bottom plate off to see if this is upgradeable or not.
Let me know if you want me to check for anything in particular. -
...if you check whether it is a "real" matte screen or coated one as seen in the video, check on keyboard travel/feel, tendency of the screen to move (like eg in the train)...and fan noise....that would be great!!! Thx
Enjoy your new gadget! -

Also, can you look in Disk Management to see what is using all the space (see question below).
John -
I'm still confused about the naming.
I see now that the Series 7 Chronos is now also called ATIV Book 8?(The Ultra ATIV Book 7 as mentioned in previous post)
Where did this name come from? I keep googling without success..
The black version of the Chronos is 8xx instead of 7 will that be the same for the Ultra version? -
Anything wrong with those? -
I'd like to replace the card with a WiFi/3G combo module. That card comes with chips on both sides and I'm wondering if it'll fit in the slot. The bottom side chip sticks out around 1mm, total height 4.2mm.
See right side of the picture for the bottom side -
Also could you please check if the the free space above the SSD / left of the fan is big enough to hold a full size MiniPCIe card. Its about the same surface size as the SSD with a height of 4.2mm.

My guess is that Samsung are putting the PM841 in the 512GB version of the NP900X3E (which has been listed for nearly 2 months but I've never seen it available).

Here is a write up of the Best Buy version, with a Passmark CPU score comparing several other processors. Also has some additional specs not mentioned on Best Buy sight (not sure where they got the specs)

OK - I opened up the Best Buy version and it is relatively easy to upgrade, the memory is upgradeable to 16GB and the MSATA drive is easy to get to also.
Build quality is very good and it is almost identical to the Series 5 Ultra Touch - except silver in color and no removable bottom plate (the whole bottom of this one is removable with 10 screws)
The WEI is as follows (after upgrade to 16GB)
Processor 6.9
Memory 7.4
Graphics 5.5
Gaming Graphics 6.4
Hard Disk 7.9 -
Thanks for you PM corteen. I re-post it here. I hope you don't mind doing so, let me know otherwise and I will delete it:
You mentioned the WiFi Card is single-sided. Is there some padding underneath? I'm quite concerned the 1mm bottom chip of the above shown module might prevent the card fitting in there.
If it doesn't fit, an alternative would be taking an extension cable and put the card above the SSD ( half / or even full size).
Another thing to deal with is to find an opening for the SIM card holder. Does the central air grid of the bottom plate sits right above the WiFi module? The bottom plate is made of plastic, right?
Regarding the additional antennas, does it seem easy to open the display bezel? -
Will the AMD / 256GB SSD version ever arrive in USA?

Seems like Amazon.DE finally has some 730U3E in stock:
Samsung 730U3E-S03 33,8 cm Notebook metall: Amazon.de: Computer & Zubehör -
which SSD brand was build in?
is the display truly matte (like S9) or coated?
how is the keyboard travel?
how is fan noise under light use and with AMD GPU activated?
...many thanks for sharing your experiences!! -
the "ATIV Books" have already been in existence for some time, so why would samsung change the Series 7 Ultra to an "ATIV Book"? it would only confuse their consumers.
do you have a link to the black version of the Chronos? -
-
Called Best Buy and they told be they had one to demo but went there and nothing. Looking at others now I think I got to get an ips screen. Appreciate any comments on the Ultra's screen quality which I believe is PLS technology.
-
I have the best buy version. Its a little heavier but more solid feeling then the old series 9 with the duralumin. Screen is nice with deep blacks. The screen is glossy as it has the touch screen edge to edge glass. There is no hardware monitor ID listed only generic PNP monitor. Elan Touchpad. Hardrive is the 841 mzmtd128hafv-000. Only annoying item is the intellimemory which seems to slow down software and app updates, better after I uninstalled it.

What does it say about the monitor when you run this . EnTech Taiwan | Utilities | Monitor Asset Manager

I also have the Bestbuy version. I was somwhat bumbed that it didnt have the AMD card. I initially bought the Series 7 Chronos and loved it but it was just to big for what i wanted. The series 5 ultra was nice but then it didnt have backlit keyboards then i found this guy. So far i really love it (minus the missing dedicated card). i play SimCity5 on this and some it work related stuff.
Im planning on upgrading the ram to 16gb. Is there a "must do" on this laptop? I've been trolling on this thread since it was only at page 3 -
I believe 16GB is not possible. 2 GB onboard, one slot available...
-
There are two slots on the laptop. It comes with one filled with 4GB. I upgraded mine to 16GB - took about 10 minutes (hardest part was separating the bottom plate from the top).
-
-
Strange... What is your model? Samsung site states that the NP730U3E-S01 has "Memory: 4 GB (2 GB integrated 1 x 2 GB) DDR3 1 600 MHz
1 x SODIMM (máx 10 GB)" -
-
BestBuy is selling the NP730U3E-A01 in the US. It's a very baseline model; no dGPU, 4 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD. Is there any indication from Samsung USA on release plans of other configurations?
-
It still plays SimCity though is im very happy -
-
There are 2 configurations of this laptop in france/europe where I am located , but I am not sure what one to purchase. Both are the same price
- The first model is the touchscreen version, its the exact same spec as the model from bestbuy (same model)
- The second model is the same spec as above except it doesn't have a touchscreen (the screen is non touch matte) and it has dedicated switchable graphics (AMD 8550M)
What model do you think I should choose ?
Both are the same price. Should I go for the dedicated graphics but non touch screen or the touchscreen model but with hd 4000 only ? - The first model is the touchscreen version, its the exact same spec as the model from bestbuy (same model)
-
I picked up the new Series 7 Ultra yesterday at Best Buy. Their website said they had the NP740U3E in stock, but there wasn't a display model. The customer service person looked it up on the computer (it wasn't possible to find without the model number) and it showed that they had 4 machines in stock and they had been in the store since March 10th. One other point of interest is that the NP740U3E is on the cover of the in store flyer and no display on the floor.

Depends on what you plan on using it for; the dGPU will be better for gaming and 3D applications. There are benchmarks available for both the HD 4000 and 8550M.
8850M: AMD Radeon HD 8550M - NotebookCheck.net Tech
HD 4000: Intel HD Graphics 4000 - NotebookCheck.net Tech
A few tests have the dGPU showing double the performance, most were in between or roughly even.
Personally, I think the touchscreen really changes things. I've only been using it for a few days and I'm already reaching up to the screen on my non-touch work laptop out of habit. -
My monitor is also the CM which got a pretty good rating on notebookcheck as an IPS screen with full color gamut. Battery life will only average probably 6 hours given the battery capacity is about 60k mWH and discharge averages 10K mW

The HD 4000 is not that bad but you have to accept the fact that this thing is not a gaming laptop. I initially wanted a gaming laptop but then I reanalyzed why i'm getting a laptop. I use my laptop for internet browsing and IT related work. the fact that it doesn't have a dedicated card doesn't really bother me but it would have awesome if it came with one. Like I said on my other posts, I was able to play the new SimCity and it does it well on low to mid setting (with fan blowing). I will swap my ram to get 16gb. I took off intelyram or whatever that software is called.
-
SO the touchscreen version is using the CMN1343 . I thought this was a matte screen , can it also be glossy ?
Cause the Asus Zenbook Prime UX31 Touchscreen model uses a different screen from the standard zenbook prime ux31. It uses a CMN N133HSG . -
both are free programs and the most common method of benchmarking video card performance. -
So my Bestbuy in Canada finally received the model that was shown in the system for 2 weeks now. i5, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, 1080p touchscreen, integrated hd 4000. Retail price of $1400, cost in the system shows $1290 so hopefully that means its going on sale for $1300. At that price I was expecting a 8570m, but i guess in comparison to other ultrabooks, the price is on par.
- First i gotta say that the screen is absolutely stunning. Everything about it is perfect, the blacks are fantastic, the colours are very rich and vibrant, and the viewing angles are great too.
- The laptop looks fantastic too, not as nice as the dark blue Series 9, but pretty damn close to as sexy.
- The keyboard is good, but not as good as I was expecting. It's got a very similar look and feel to the keyboard on the original Asus Zenbook.
- The touchpad is amazing, i love it. Very smooth feel, the multi-touch for pinch-zoom and scrolling is very accurate and responsive. Its also a perfect size imo.
- It still feels very lightweight, even with being heavier than the Series 9, which makes the larger battery worth it for sure.
Was only playing around with it for 10min, but id say its a perfect ultrabook. -
My guess is that it's not switching to dedicated graphics for the test. That's the same result I get on mine with only HD 4000 graphics.

Not all locations have it in stock yet, some received shipments on Saturday, others should get it tomorrow.
As of right now, Newmarket has 2, Richmondhill has 1 on demo and 1 to sell, and Warden & Eglington has 2. I'll update you if any other locations receive it.
