This website looks great for personalized sleeves :)
I might order one there as soon as I get my Series 7!
You can upload any picture you'd like on it and the quality of the sleeve seems really high.

I bought this one (Crumpler Lamington Sleeve 13"). It's a tight fit, but works:

They also have different colors over at Crumpler.

I've had the US Best Buy version for a couple weeks now. I'm loving it except for the silver keyboard. This thing would be perfect if it had a black keyboard with white letters. I'm hoping one of the international releases includes a black keyboard that can be purchased separately and is user replaceable.

I couldn't agree with you more, so much so that I started this separate thread to discuss this one deal-killing feature IMO. Such a pity.

I'm quite into this laptop ( mostly because i can't arrange to find 1400 euros for the 15'' ), has anybody tried it with either linux or some games?

In the first option I'd like to know how the graphics cards is supported. I already know drivers are bad, I'd love news about how bad they're

For gaming I'm not into heavy games, just casual gaming (fifa, nba, lol), and maybe some new games on lower resolution (bioshock, tomb raider) and some RTS too (sc2, shogun 2 ecc )

What about the native ssd? Is the RAM upgradable to at least 8 gb?

From Lisa's review " Alternatively, you can disable the ambient light sensor in the UEFI BIOS (hit F2 when the computer boots to enter BIOS)."

aeo's description of the results he/she had after attempts to disable the adaptive brightness mirror my issues.

I turned off the "adjust screen brightness automatically" in General PC Settings
I set adaptive brightness to off under display in all advanced power settings

I can adjust the screen brightness perfectly UNTIL my computer goes to sleep either by closing the lid or being idle for 10 minutes. After the machine is awakened from sleep the maximum screen brightness is quite dim in evening light. If I hold the screen up to the light it will brighten as long as I hold it up to the light. (Note: I retain control of the keyboard backlight with the function keys even after the machine sleeps)

I can regain my control of screen brightness by restarting the computer. This will hold until the machine sleeps again.

From comments by Lisa and aeo it looks like there is an additional adaptive brightness control that must be changed from the UEFI/BIOS. I am hoping someone can direct me in how to disable this control in the UEFI/BIOS.

It was also mentioned that "disabling the light sensor in Services " and/or "disabled the Sensor monitoring service" might be necessary. I am also hoping someone can offer direction on how to accomplish this/these tasks.

the 3dmark11 score seems about right but the 06 one is poor. I'm guessing 06 doesn't recognize the video card and is running on integrated.

Open Services (type Win + R, then run services.msc), then disable or set the Sensor Monitoring Service to only start manually. This comes with the caveat that other sensors may supply data to the same service, though I haven't noticed any side effects. There's no accelerometer, compass, etc. Maybe CPU temps? There must be a way to check...

Basically, what I found was, that this bug concerning wrong adaptive brightness after "Energy saving" exists with BIOS/UEFI version P03ABW. So after waking up the system, it somehow uses a lower level setting (i.e. the one from BIOS/UEFI).

There are two workarounds. The best would be to install the latest BIOS/UEFI version P0 4ABW. The other option would be to disable the adaptive brightness in the BIOS/UEFI. Please take a look at this screenshot for the option to disable. You can access the BIOS/UEFI by repeatedly pressing F2 when starting your ultrabook.

    Hello! :hi2:

Please take a look at posts #325, 327 and 328. You should be safe to alter the partition layout. Indeed, I shrinked the C: partition from Linux and later restored a backup with the original layout. You can backup the original setup as well as any other system state with the Samsung Recovery software (for devices with space <= 32GB it seems to format to FAT32, everything larger is formatted to NTFS). Original system's backup takes around 15-16 GB. Later states might take around 30 GB. As far as I know the COA/serial number is stored along the BIOS/UEFI. If you want to get a hold of it, please look here.

Came across this and thought it may be of interest to people having an issue with keyboard letters/light: SAMSUNG Series 7 NP740U3E-S02DE Lettering keyboard skin Cover

I have the laptop and absolutely love it! It came down to this or the Asus UX31A touch and I went for the Samsung in the end, and I'm delighted with my decision.

Hey I just got my 730U3E and I'm loving it so far but I've begun to notice a slight crackle in the sound. I've heard sporadic crackle in some youtube videos and a couple of times in the windows system sounds. Any idea what's going on? What can I test to see what's the origin of this crackle? I'm going to try to run a game soon to see if the crackle is still there, it's getting annoying. It seems limited to some types of sound playback.

Also, what bloatware to you think I should focus on removing?

Finally, it was a bit of a shock to drive C as 60GB free out of 90GB right off the box. A substantial part of the SSD seems to be dedicated to a backup system I haven't investigated yet.

Hi Ethereus, congrats on that nice laptop :)

On the bloatware issue, I suggest you check this post and this thread. They're based on Win7-models, but there is much that also applies to Win8.

The backup system that is taking up space on your SSD is Samsung Recovery Solution (SRS), which provides a number of features for backup up and restore of your system -- including restoring to Factory State. If your PC did not come with a Windows disc (nowadays most Samsungs don't) that Recovery is also the only source of the Windows software provided to you by Samsung.

With previous versions of SRS, backup and restore of the recovery was a nightmare (though possible). The newer SRS6 (which you should have) provides simple features to backup itself to a USB stick. Check the fast paced 2013 Chronos Intro thread for discussions of this, starting around here (that last link should save you from scanning through 5000+ posts :D )

I don't have any clever suggestions on the audio crackling. I suppose it could be software related, and checking for updated drivers (using SW Update) should be a first step. But just to make sure it isn't the speakers themselves, I would try with headphones. Hopefully others have suggestions on that

Let us know how it goes.

Fascinating. The computer has only been available for a few weeks and they already have a fix for one of the major complaints. The keypad isn't optimal, but now that I have control of my lighting I can easily adjust the backlighting so I can see the keys. However, I do understand where people are coming from regarding the hard to see keyboard.

Thanks for your quick response. I decided to disable the adaptive brightness in the BIOS to fix my problem. Your mention of unlikely but possible side-effects convinced me to do it from the BIOS. In the BIOS, it was a very specific ...turn off adaptive brightness...then save and done

Can you tell me which BIOS/UEFI version you have installed? If you have version P03ABW, updating to P04ABW should fix this issue even with Adaptive Brightness in the BIOS/UEFI turned On. At least it worked with me, but an independent confirmation would be nice. ;)

I don't know how to update the BIOS/UEFI, so I went with the your second option ...disabled the adaptive brightness in the BIOS

SW Update should offer you the BIOS update but my preferred method is to use the standalone BIOS Update program as described here.

Thank you. It work's with the bios P04ABW. You can disable the "brightness adaptive with post bios".
And i have disable the "captor monitoring " in windows services too.

Now the button FN + F2 and F3 works

Ok, I am officially confused... I've been waiting for this laptop for ages, but really want the i7 with 8570m graphics. I'm in the UK, and the only configurations I can find are i5 - but there are i7s in Germany?

Am I missing something? Is there an i7 option available in the UK and I'm just not using the right search phrase to find it? Does anyone have a product number I can try or, even better, a link to anywhere that sells one?!

Oh, and why is the official Samsung UK website so useless? I can't even find the 13" Series 7 listed there at all!

guys, could you please tell which type and model of display is used in 730u3e, usual, non-touch version? initially many said its PLS, then some russian observers supposed its MVA (because it looked not as good as IPS or even PLS), but somewhere on the forum i read that the display is the same as in the touch version 740u3e, and is Chimei Innolux CMN1343 FHD IPS? Is it really an IPS panel used here? because for me it's quite a decisive aspect.
    thanks!

As far as I can see, there are i7s in Germany. Look at NP730U3E-S05DE and NP730U3DE-S07DE. The only difference I could spot was Windows 8 vs Windows 8 Pro in these two models. Both seem to have an i7-3537U.

There is also information on both models on the German Samsung website:

    Samsung Serie 7 Ultra 730U3E S05
    Samsung ATIV Book 7 730U3E S07

The S07DE is also listed in black on the website. :D

The S05 has the 8550m graphics card and the S07 has the 8570m...

Do these have touch screens, or the standard non-touch?

I'll have to look at it on my mac later to get google translate going, my German isn't very good any more!

    730 is non-touch, 740 is touch.

Ever since I've been watching Samsung notebooks there's been a much better choice of hardware specs in Germany than the UK. For some unknown reason the Samsung UK marketing people don't want to offer a decent range. They are the people who order from the factory.

Here is an excellent comparison of a side by side comparison of the Samsung Series 7 Ultra 740u3e and the Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A in both a video and written form.

These are IPS displays, both made by the same company and the model numbers are close: CMN1343 on the Samsung Series 7 Ultra and CMN1348 on the Asus Zenbook Prime Touch. The Samsung uses the same panel as the Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD, but with a touch layer added,

Samsung Series 7 Ultra vs. Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A Touch Comparison
MobileTechReview Forum, News and Reviews: Samsung Series 7 Ultra vs. Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A Touch Comparison

Here the the reviewer responds specifically about the perceived display differences of the two machines in the video comparison

in my full review I explain why the Samsung looks more washed out: it glares more and we film under bright lighting. You're seeing the effects of glare, not a lower contrast display. Side by side they look nearly identical (the Asus has much warmer tones).

Are there any problems with importing from Germany? As far as I can tell the keyboard layout is the same as ours, so surely you could just set the language differently in Windows, or format it and start again?

Are we likely to get more hardware options at some point? Seems strange for Samsung UK to not even acknowledge the Series 7 on their website - so maybe more options are inbound?

I can think of at least one difference: German keyboard layout is QWERTZ, i.e. Y and Z are exchanged.

Just wanted to add that my S04 is listed with 8550M but in fact has a 8570M, as seen from the specs on the packaging. I was not able to verify it, though, as GPU-Z 0.7.0 hangs at startup.

Oh. Funny how the pictures in their gallery show a qwerty keyboard!

I don't know what 'endpoint security' is (or where 'galaxy' comes from) but I have KIS 2013 installed and working with no boot issues. It's not perfect though as the auto update is not working. It updates manually fine but doesn't seem to want to do it itself. I'm thinking the flaky wireless network driver is the likely problem so I'm hoping a future driver update will fix it.
