I read about people having varying levels of success with things, so here are my specific questions. My model is NP740U3E-X01AU.

    1. I can't see any updates to the Samsung settings update. Is that still true? ie. are the updates that others are seeing for different models?

    2. My main concern is that FSX is now completely unstable. I read other posts on the web suggesting that the AMD 13.11 and 13.9 drivers are the culprits. Can I safely go back to the 13.4 drivers as FSX users are suggesting? When I tried to go back one step to 13.9 drivers last weekend I got the black screen of death!

Thanks for keeping this thread updatd with useful information.

Two days ago I upgraded to Win8.1 and everything works as before. I have a NP900X3C. The installation took sometime, but it restored all environment as I had in Win8, inclusive the Rainmeter customization. Only application that does not work in Win8.1 is Avast antivirus (was removed from the PC during installation). I will check this out later.

In Win 8 everything worked except the keyboard back-light. In Win 8.1 the same happens. It is amazing that when I bought the Laptop, the keyboard back-light worked, but after some application updates it stopped.

In win8.1 all Samsung Applications (e.g. Settings) work as before. Hints on how I could make the keyboard back-light work in in Win8.1 is welcome.
    Notes:
    - After the upgrade, The Samsung SW Update program showed only a couple of apps to install. Shortly after I got an update for the System Bios (ver P09ABK).
    - After this the SW Update program shows a list of 18 Samsung programs.
    - In the Metro interface the Samsung Apps are the same as in Win 8. I tried the S-Notes (I have it linked to Google Drive to share it with my Galaxy Note 10.1) and it worked fine.
    - Bluetooth works Fine
    - All Fx keys works fine. The Keyboard backlight commands appear to work (the sliding bar changes in Settings) but the keyboard lights are not on (the same as in Win8 after some SW upgrade.
    - The sound is working as well as the screen brightness

Just annoyed that the keyboard backlight still does not work.... See the PC system details after the update in the picture below.

To make FSX work with 13.9 and higher, direct x 10 has to be enabled. There is a problem with the direct x 9 module.

I am angry, too (np700z5a). This computer has more than decent hardware to run windows 8.1

I have owned a lot of different laptops and this is the first time it is up to the manufacturer whether I can upgrade my OS.

Any guidance on that? In the early days of graphics cards, I do recall mucking around with DX installations but have got used to just letting everything go automatic. Tonight will be my dedicated time for attempting to get FSX working.

Samsung and Microsoft also tricked me into updating my NP770Z7E to Windows 8.1 too early - Samsung because they stated it was compatible, and Microsoft because their "Update" is a completely new Windows with no way to roll back afterwards.

After updating the Switchable Graphics didn't work (Catalyst couldn't start), so I uninstalled it and installed the CCC which magically came with the Windows 8.1 Update (C:\Program Files\AMD\CCC2\Install\ccc2_install.exe). That appeared to work fine but only for a short time - turns out after wakeup from Sleep the GPU (Radeon HD 8870M) was left at 99% utilization until the next reboot. I only noticed this after the fan was constantly running without doing anything. Since its not obvious which graphics card is in use I checked with the free tool Open Hardware Monitor which lists temperatures and usage of all devices, and it showed that while switching between Intel and AMD graphics card worked, after a while the AMD was left at 99% and started heating up.

Then I read other people had success with the latest beta drivers so I uninstalled Catalyst again and installed amd_catalyst_13.11_mobility_betav1.exe (AMD doesn't make it easy because the Installer they offer refuses to install any drivers for this notebook, but after googling around I found that file somewhere on their servers). Everything appeared to work fine again, but alas.. after a while the same thing happened, AMD was left at 99% utilization without any reason.

The only update I see is the Win8.1 Brightness Patch, which actually worked (but only as long as you use the latest Intel drivers which came with the Windows 8.1 Update - not the older ones from Samsung which were previously used in Windows 8).
Also all the extra functions of the touchpad were not working anymore, but I reinstalled the old Windows 8 package from SW Update and that worked.

So for now I disabled the AMD graphics card in device manager and uninstalled Catalyst again. Waiting for a real graphics driver package from Samsung now but so far nothing showed up for my model :-(

Anyone installed the AMD 13.11 Beta 6 mobility drivers? Tried and for the first time ever I lost graphic card switching and couldn't get it back without returning to beta 1

    Hey there

    I am using the NP900X3C-A02

After having used the 8.1 Preview version for a couple of months, I switched to the "real" 8.1. but ever since using either version, I only get the SW update as seen below. I don't see the old window, where I saw which program/software/driver was up to date and which needed an update. I am running the latest SW Update 2.1.19.0... Now I can download the software package but in my opinion the versions listed are outdated...
In other words, at the moment I cant/dont use ANY functionality such as fn-keys, rapidstart, eco-mode, etc... It's really annoying.
How did you guys, especially Luso Spikes, make it work anyways?

    Hi Folks

After a delay of about 7 days I finally received this email today 26-Oct-2013, from Samsung Customer Support (below).

In short Samsung are saying that:
    1. They do not support Windows 8.1 (yet)
    2. They are blaming Microsoft for all the problems

So, for now the wise money says be patient. What I don't yet know how how we actually find out when Samsung/MS officially declare that they have solved their collect problems.

Thank you for contacting Samsung Customer Support.

I am sorry to hear of the problems you are having with trying to apply the voluntary 8.1 update direct from Microsoft. I can understand the inconveniences that software issues may cause.

Through doing some research online it appears that there are several bugs with the Windows 8.1 upgrade, this is not an issue with your Samsung hardware. I would suggest that reinstall 8.0 onto your hard drive, using the recovery console, until Microsoft releases the bug fixes.

Samsung is not supporting this operating system at present, if you have any software issues please contact Microsoft for further support.

If there is anything else we can help with, please let us know.

Interesting: As member fugunaga reported yesterday, the Win 8.1 upgrade has been pulled from the Store (at least on my PC too); and as reported by members ship69 and newcastlefc200 this morning, Samsung are washing their hands completely of it now. Their language ("the voluntary 8.1 update direct from Microsoft") is noteworthy.

I haven't seen any general news reports mentioning that 8.1 has been pulled for other vendors, and I wonder if it is only for Samsung laptops. Maybe Samsung persuaded Microsoft to block the 8.1 upgrade in the Store for their computers until they are done solving the problems.

Jimbob, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! I recently upgraded my Lenovo P500 to Windows 8.1 and had no problems until this morning when I innocently hit the F12 key to increase my screen brightness. The screen went to its dimmest setting (at first I thought it went completely black because I was sitting outside). I did some Googling around on my work laptop (couldn't see crap on my Lenovo!) and came across the Intel HD/Windows 8.1 driver issue. I first did a system restore, which put me back prior to the last Windows update, which I was really hoping would solve the problem. It didn't. I was about to download the beta version of the Intel HD 4000 Driver for Windows 8.1, when I clicked on the link for feedback on the bottom of the download page. I somehow stumbled across someone's post who linked to this forum, and specifically pointed out your post, #163. I followed your easy to understand directions and now all is well again!! Woo hoo!

In any case, I had been planning to install Linux alongside Windows 8, and now have even more motivation to follow through with that plan, sooner rather than later.

Again, thanks so much for posting what worked for you and laying out the instructions so clearly! :D

To enable DirectX 10 in FSX, Make sure FSX SP1 and SP2 are installed and it will be in the display settings of FSX

Interesting the feedback you got from Samsung. Before I updated to Win8.1 I sent an email to Samsung in Portugal asking if it was OK to update to Win 8.1. I got the positive answer (yes I can update and the Samsung applications would work (see email below in Portuguese)).

My computer was pretty stable after installing the update. However, over the next week, I had many of the problems you all have described. It started with Software Update not detecting my computer model, and then continued with my touchpad not remembering my settings. However, the game-breaker was the fact that my CPU was running at 20% at idle, all from System, kicking my fans into action, and I lost over 2 hours of battery life as a result. I ended up downgrading until new drivers come out.

Thank you. There was a similar guide on the UK update page that member Animaag posted some time ago. But this one is on the US site. I included your link in today's update to the opening post.

When did you get this response? I have a feeling that Samsung washing their hands of 8.1 is a very recent move (as in the last day or so) -- IF it is an official move at all. It could also just be different support reps having completely different information. That happens sometimes.

I just got 10 updates through the SW Update:

    - Online Chat Consultation Service - installed after restart,
    - Multi-Memory Card Driver,
    - Chipset Driver,
    - Intel ME Interface Driver,
    - Intel Rapid State Storage Technology - installed after restart,
    - Sound Driver,
    - Touchpad Driver,
    - LAN Driver,
    - Wireless LAN Driver - installed after restart,
    - Bluetooth Driver - installed after restart,
    - Support Center – installed after restart,
    - Help Desk - installed after restart, and
    - Win 8.1 Brightness Patch Program.

Brightness control is definitely back, I'm not sure how easily I can test out the other updates although wireless will be easy enough to observe in action.

I also notice that the AMD site shows the 13.11 beta driver is now dated 25/10/2013 so I assume there has been an update to that as well. I'm just about to download and install that now.

[EDIT] New video driver refused to update claiming that it's not compatible. Tried to update the driver through Device Manager and have now screwed it up. Got the black screen of death initially, laptop has now booted up properly but graphics card is no longer working.

[EDIT 2] Device Manager now reports the AMD as 13.152 dated 30/08/2013. Next step is to see if this plays along nicely with FSX.

No, it is not nice from Samsung, for me it is clear Samsung made the mistake, everybody knew Windows 8.1 is coming! I wonder Samsung was sleeping? The manufacturers even could have the final RTM version since late August for to prepare their drivers, software for the 17th October start. Samsung should have offer the 8.1 drivers and installation instructions from 17th October or earlier via SWupdate, than no black screens, brightness control, etc... And now they blaming Microsoft, because they published a new OS? I want enjoy the new OS and do not wanna wait more!!!
Fortunately now my AtivBook 5 working perfectly with the new chipset and the two VGA drivers, but still bugging me Samsung's attitude.

This is again complete speculation on my part, but I think there may have been a tug of war between Microsoft and Samsung going on for months leading up to this upgrade. Samsung knew 8.1 broke compatibility and wanted Microsoft to fix it, so they wouldn't have to spend a fortune updating and re-certifying all their drivers - only a year after having done the same for Win8. Microsoft were on a righteous path to transform Windows and wanted Samsung (and other vendors) to just do the work and update their drivers. In the end, Samsung (and again, maybe other vendors too) dared Microsoft to release 8.1, betting that they (MS) would take the blame from users when everything fell apart. Something like that.

Any of us here who tested 8.1 since the first Preview (as I did here back in June, along with several other members) noticed immediately how it broke compatibility and new drivers were needed. It just doesn't make sense that both of these big companies would completely overlook this problem or pretend it didn't exist.

There is no doubt we have incompetence here. I just think there has to be more going on. Either way, customers ended up on the losing end.

I did it again now, giving in to speculation, instead of focusing on solutions here

For now, I think by far the best strategy for Samsung owners is to wait. If you already upgraded and it works, great. If you upgraded and it doesn't easily resolve, then roll back and wait. I wouldn't be surprised if an 8.11 update comes out. Or maybe just a bunch of Microsoft updates to 8.1.

Whatever happened in those driver updates, I now have my old system back*. FSX plays along nicely with no crashes to the desktop, screen brightness is adjustable, no wifi dropouts since the updates although I still can't figure out what my remaining unrecognised device is.

    * Fingers crossed. My confidence in PCs and Windows 8 has taken a massive hit.

Just after the upgrade to 8.1, the Fn-keys in my X3E worked fine, but then after a day or two they stopped working, perhaps because of some update, I am not even sure, as there were so many of them. F-12 WiFi is always on and F2/F3 brightness keys don't work, which is very annoying (I've booted up several Linux distros from a pendrive, they have other issues, but in all of them the brightness keys do work..).

I can still see the update in the Windows Store, and there are a load of drivers for my NP780Z5E-S01UK for Wndows 8.1 listed in Software Update.

    So I'm taking the plunge.

3.something gigs is going to take a while to download, though, so I've got plenty of opportunity to chicken out.

I have a Samsung NP300E5C-S01IN and it came pre-installed with WIN 8. I updated it to WIN 8.1 today and the touchpad and bluetooth are not working. I tried to update the drivers using SW-Update. But it is not taking all the keyboard commands. I downloaded the touchpad driver using another laptop but the driver is unable to find the touchpad to install it.
I DON"T UNDERSTAND WHAT TO DO.
And there is not much I am able to do with the help of the keyboard. I cannot access the Samsung settings as keyboard doesn't work there.

8.1 is still not listed for my NP700Z3A (which it was originally). I suppose that means Samsung has worked it out so that it only shows up on models that either (A) they know are now supported with updated drivers, or (B) are on their list of supported models ( here) regardless of whether updates are actually out yet. Indeed, my model is not on that list.

Hey everyone, I didn't notice how much this thread actually grew, I don't have time to read through all of it but I guess I'll share my experience with you. I have the NP780Z5E-S01UB (Best Buy Chronos version) and I updated to Win8.1 a few days ago. At the time of this writing, pretty much everything in my computer seems to be working fine. Before upgrading Windows I got a notification from SWUpdate saying it had to be updated, and it installed version 2.1.21.

While I was still under Win8 I downloaded the Win8.1 Graphic drivers (through SWUpdate's find model function) and I tried to uninstall both ATI and Intel's graphics drivers and update to the new ones. It installed the new AMD drivers if I'm not mistaken, but the Intel ones couldn't be installed, saying they were incompatible, and at that point I had lost brightness control. I left it broken and updated to Win8.1, after which I immediately installed Samsung's Graphic drivers again and rebooted, and without doing anything fancy, I had brightness control and switchable graphics back. All muy function keys work and keyboard backlight too. I'm also using a bluetooth mouse and it's working correctly, so far I had one minor hiccup which I can't blame for sure on the computer, it may have been the mouse itself. The touchpad upgrade did take away many options, but as always, I simply exported the installer through SWUpdate and set it up again with the ETDAniConf.exe utility, I didn't even need to change anything in the registry this time.

A couple of issues: I have noticed my fans kicking in more often, nothing extreme but noticeable. Checking in a very rough manner with HWinfo I can see the processor oscillating between 1.2 and 3.x GHz without intermediate steps, so there's that. Checking with AMD's CCC integrated monitor, I can always see a WWAHost.exe application running as high performance. According to what I found out, this process acts like a host for ModernUI apps. Still, HWinfo doesn't report the dedicated GPU as being active, so I don't know what to make of it. I have also noticed that after closing some ModernUI apps, they stay active in Task Manager, I'm guessing that may be an issue with Win8.1 itself.

So far, I feel like my experience has been decent and my computer works well enough, I would expect the remaining issues to be fixed eventually, and I even suspect they are probably related to one another, so maybe a simple PXProfileList update or something like that might be enough. I agree that they are making a really big mess of this all, as I can see that the programs offered in SWUpdate keep changing from one day to another, and they are not being offered to everyone in a consistent matter. Anyway, there's not really much more I can tell you, just wanted to share my experience as a contrast with other people's horror stories :p

EDIT: btw, I'm worried I may have made a mess of my driver installations, are there any recommendations for driver cleaning programs? Or even a way to do it manually?

Well, I'm up and running (as above, NP780Z5E-S01UK). Updated, ran SW update to install a new Graphics driver, restarted on request.

No black screens or any such drama. My trackpad driver settings have reset themselves, but nothing else seems amiss - yet.

    Hello all:

I have an ATIV Book 8 (NP8800). I have been following this thread after my first attempt at the upgrade. Today I finished my third attempt (which was successful at last).

What I did was this: after updating everything I made a backup image of C: (I have all my personal files on a D: partition) stored in D:, then installed the upgrade. Then I installed all the Samsung recommended upgrades and installs from SW update plus the graphics driver (also from SW but manually downloaded it). At first, I had trouble with some Start Menu apps but after manually uninstalling and reinstalling them everything was fine. I also had a problem with the Intel ProSet/wireless BT driver but had to manually close the service, uninstall it and install again (not from SW but from Intel itself ).

Everything seems to work fine now

    running NP770Z5E-SE02

Okey so upgraded to 8.1 prematurely and got the common errors like everyone else. read every comment in this wonderful thread (thanks yall) and waited patiently for sammy updated drivers.

As i couldnt bear the mouse setting erase issue i downloaded the 8.0 touchpad settings to save mouse settings and that worked fine for a couple of days until...

today when i got a bunch of updates in SW Update app for 8.1, downloaded them all as my travel situation forces me to have a working computer by tomorrow and a fan going on beserker mode gives me about 2,5h battery time when it was 7h in win 8.0 and that sucks when your flying for 20+ hours.

1.GC drivers and switchable graphics and gamma setting works fine. Graphics driver is 10.18.10.3304.
    2. Fan is no longer going on full, nice
    3. The damn touchpad keeps resetting settings and some options are missing such as 3 finger gestures. tried finding model manually again and found the 8.0 driver but i can just see the same touchpad driver for 8.0 as for 8.1. the driver version is Touchpad Driver_11.7.18.2

This is really crappy as i really want the 3 finger gestures.

Anyone with a solution to this problem or sitting on driver version earlier than Touchpad Driver_11.7.18.2? I tried the win 7 driver version as well and they did not work at all (Touchpad Driver_11.7.5.5). The mouse has disappared in device manager since i uninstalled 18.2 and installing 5.5 gives nothing. no matter if run in admin mode or win 7/win8/win8.1 compatible mode.

    Help much appreciated!

Just wanted to say, I just installed Windows 8.1 on my Series 9 NP900X4D-A03DE. Windows in general installed just fine. I pre-downloaded the driver for Windows 8.1 and then just installed them via SWUpdate, so far so good.

    BUT:
    • Touchpad has less Settings (no 3finger, cannot reverse scrolling)
    • Brightness does NOT work
    • Keyboard light does NOT work
    • Airplane Mode key does NOT work
    • In general all Fn Key Functions do NOT work
    • No Settings App
I think I'll be going back to Windows 8 soonish, after testing 8.1 a little more. MS did quiet some nice rework, but not work the trouble (YET).

It tells you that there is a Failure with a code -10 (whatever this might be).

Well, it seems I spoke too soon.

After much mucking around trying to find a relatively recent ATI driver I finally managed to screw things up completely - Windows kept booting into some sort of recovery mode but never finished and even refused to boot into safe mode. So I went back and ran a complete refresh which at least return the laptop to factory condition. Luckily, I had run Belarc beforehand and could found downloadable (legitimate) ISOs for all of my software except for one - disks are back in Australia so I guess I will have to do without that program for a while.

The first thing I am going to do is create an image of this functioning version of my laptop. Then I will trying to find a newer, stable ATI driver that still works with FSX. And then I am NOT going to upgrade to Windows 8.1!

This is all on my NP740U3E-X01AU.

...And they kept resetting themselves. But I found a load more "installable" updates including a new trackpad driver in Software Update. They were in the All Software bit, rather than the Updates bit, I'd just assumed that was all the bloatware rather than anything useful. Now the trackpad settings seem to stay as they are set.

Some of the trackpad settings UI has disappeared since the update, but not for anything I cared about having set up. My registry hack to make the lower right corner button act like a Macbook still holds now, too.

    Hi,

the AMD drivers in the Samsung package actually seem to be older than the beta version 1. In device manager, Windows claims the beta 1 ones are version 13.200.16, while the Samsung ones are 13.152. Catalyst says 13.11 in both cases. I reverted to the beta 1 version, as I got several issues in WoT (sudden in-game framerate drops after a certain period - from 40fps to 15fps, making the thing unplayable, plus gross graphics errors with textures sometimes) with the Samsung version, but there may also be some energy saving issue in-between; didn't experience that before last Friday at least and it's really annoying.

There indeed is a new mobility beta labeled version 6 (13.250.x IIRC), and that can be downloaded directly (without the AMD utility) via a similar link (replace beta1 by beta6 in the url) like the one I gave here once, but these obviously don't work on my notebook, so I would NOT recommend installing them.

    -- Ch.

Any guidance on how to safely revert or change the AMD drivers? It was in trying to do this that I royally wrecked my laptop to the point where it wouldn't even boot into safe mode.

I had read various instructions on the net but I have no idea what I did wrong.

Now that I back to a clean Windows 8 install, the reported driver are somewhere in the 12.x range - I would like to roll it forward to a stable version for Windows 8 but not unless I know how to roll back again.

    Hi,

I don't know what may be the recommended way, but as long as I got a working system, I always create a custom restore point to be able to roll back everything in case something fails. Bad thing with Win 8.1 was that there weren't any available as the system booted right into BSOD login after the upgrade. Otherwise, I would just have rolled back everything and waited for better times.

When upgrading the AMD driver, it usually suffices to run the setup. This was not the case when I tried the beta 6 which installed without problems, but left the AMD card with a yellow warning sign in device manager. Options are 1.) to uninstall the AMD software which should also remove the current drivers. After the necessary reboot, Windows should install some generic version (or a version it thinks is stable, one never really knows) from Windows Update Catalog. 2.) Update the driver via the option in device manager. That was what I did in case of the failing beta 6; it then installed the 13.152 one from the net. Afterwards, I simpy re-installed the beta 1 and that worked fine 3.) Device manager also has an option to revert to the previous driver version; never used that though. 4.) uninstall the driver via device manager. This is what I did when facing the inital state of BSOD after booting in safe mode. Windows installed a generic non-AMD version that let me at least boot again; afterwards I simply installed a better version by AMD (AFAIK the beta 1).

Note there is always a risk when dealing with all these options, so if your system is working, I would consider if it's really worth it. In my case, the BSOD thing, it was kind of a one-way street for me, the only option left to go forward with Win 8.1 in order to avoid having to reinstall Windows 8, so I took some risks I otherwise wouldn't have taken. In fact I was quite content with the old drivers, but they just were incompatible with Win 8.1, so I had to find something better. If your Windows 8 installation works satisfactory, I would just leave it as it is; I furthermore kind of doubt that the version 13 drivers are really better than the previous ones. For the Ativ 8, Samsung obviously thinks the 13.152 version is perfectly suited for Windows 8 as well, just checked, and the driver packages for Win 8 and Win 8.1 seem to be identical now (seems they updated the Win 8 versions, too), so I would give SWUpdate a try. IMHO the best option is the beta 1 driver, though, and thats what I will stick to for the time being. YMMV :)

Btw one of the reasons I chose a Samsung book this time was because my previous Sony Vaio had an artificial limitation preventing the installation of newer NVidia drivers than the ones provided by Sony (and those dated from end of 2007 which Sony obviously still thinks is fine), so each time before an update I had to patch several inf files to convince the installer about the - completely generic - 8800M GT chip it sported, hoping all my problems in this direction would finally be gone for good now - how wrong was I!

    HTH and good luck,
    -- Ch.

Yep, ran into that one too. Needless to say that I am NOT upgrading to Windows 8.1 but I AM creating an image disc and also a USB Windows Recovery drive.

This was the start of my downfall last night. After getting back to a stable system, I realised that this driver was installed but the Catalyst Control Center refused to install - it meant that the laptop was handing over graphics duties to the ATI card when playing games. In the course of uninstalling and reinstalling CCC something got messed up somewhere.

Once I have an image to recover from, I will still try to update to 13.4 but it sounds like that was the last driver worth having for FSX at least.

On a side note, why is this so hard? Why do I have to learn the ins and outs of drivers just to have a functioning laptop? I guess it's kept me off the streets for two weekends now ... [Rant over]

I have the series 7 model 780Z5E-01UB ... I used shift+F1 [it actually has the tool symbol on the key] to go from the death screen to the ability to refresh back to windows 8.

I have no intentions of trying again until Samsung puts it in blood that they've got this fiasco under control! ...it'll be Samsung consumers blood, from all the bloody aneurisms we're having, but still.... I'm not at all impressed with Samsungs support of their products any more.

I tried to update to Windows 8.1 but I accidentally turned off my laptop and it restored to Windows 8. I then tried to reinstall the Windows 8.1 and left my laptop alone. Now my computer starts up for 5 seconds, flashes this screen https://twitter.com/shaneindar/status/395125256664657920 and then restarts. It then keeps to loop like that.

Any help with this would be much appreciated. I have a Samsung Series 7 Chronos NP700Z5C-S02UB.

I have a Series 7 Ultra 730U3E-S05 and besides minor annoyances which I could solve with the help of the comments in here I didn't have any major problems.

One thing I've noticed is that the CPU seems to be capped at 0,8 GHz. Even if I load up a 1080p youtube video and start doing CPU intensive stuff, the CPU seems to stay at 0,8 GHz....
This results in an overall sluggish behavoir compared to the systems performance before the update...

Another thing is that the RAM (10GB) fills up for no reason after a few minutes and I have only ~1,2GB of free RAM...

does anyone have a similar problem?

It's too late, but this thread might have the answer for the slow CPU.

And I would expect that the RAM was being filled by IntelliMemory.
