I want to chime in the discussion of upgrading to Windows 8.1. In my opinion and experience with my Ativ Book 8 (NP880) over 1 week, I could say it is safe to upgrade to it. Samsung has released a set of driver that basically can be interchanged between different model, with one exception: the graphic driver. Currently I have installed the graphic driver from Samsung and it works properly. For those of you that have the HD 7000M or HD 8000M series, I suggest using some driver cleaner to remove completely the unusable driver and download the one from Samsung SW Update, its version should be 10.18.10.3304. Although this one is actually not the latest from Intel and AMD, but it will ensure the stability.

For those having problems with touchpad, install the one from SW Update, version 11.7.18.2. However, after you install this, go to the location that you download the driver and copy file ETDAniConf.exe from x86 folder to somewhere else and run it. This will allow you to config whatever you want with the touchpad.

For Settings program, here is the direct link if you don't see it from SW Update (version 2.2.0.5)
    Code:
    http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/SW/201310/20131021184010169/BASW-84270A30.ZIP
    .

For the rest, you can use SW Update to find yours or search the NP880 and download the drivers from that model. I recommend to download it and install each of them manually, not through SW Update if you can.

P/s: So the BIOS update breaks the ability to wake the system on when opening the lid. I guess Samsung will release another one to fix that.

    Hello everyone!

I have a np880z5e on w8 with basic hdd disk. I read many articles and I am bit confused. Is it safe to update to w8.1? I did all offered updates on sw update. Main fears are RAM usage, performance, display...

I upgraded and my samsung series 9 notebook has a multitude of very annoying problems. Might sell it when it ever gets solved. Have had nothing but problems since I've bought this laptop (and the broken series 9 right before). Staying away from samsung in the future, seriously disappointed.
Programs not installing, not downloading, games not opening, screen remaining on when lid closed, vpn not working, wifi not working, mouse pad completely crap, both physically as now softwarely. Piece of expensive crap.

UPDATE: regarding the loss of my power plans I believe a windows update caused it or its the new settings. After restoring my image I then installed the newest settings, all my toggles were back so I made a restore point. today after a windows update and a restart I lost my power plans again, so I restored back using the restore point and my power plans were back! I've stopped windows updates for the time being until I figure out whats causing the problem.

    thanks

NP780Z5E-S01UB here, impatience got the better of me after trying to download 8.1 when it first came out. (Reverted back to win8 after the common black screen.) Today, I did a factory reset because I had nothing much on the computer from the last failure-- I installed the drivers via SWUpdate and the windows 8 updates. Downloaded 8.1, restarted, and no black screen! The resolution was off and brightness couldn't be toggled, but that was fixed after simply downloading the available 8.1 drivers from SWU. Now, resolution is fine, and brightness can be toggled. The battery life so far is the same as win8, as are the fans. I'm currently de-bloating + tweaking a few things, and so far things look promising.
TL;DR: Windows 8.1 works so far on mine. I'll definitely report back if any problems arise.

Update: Tried to install my normal antivirus: Webroot. Shortly after installing, kept getting BSOD, error "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (kbdclass.sys). Uninstalled it and am running with Windows Defender, all is normal again.

Not thinking straight, I did the update first day on my 770Z7E 17". Compared with some of the horror stories here, mine was pale. Worst event was installing the Windows Update video package after the fact. Required two hard reboots -- battery disconnect -- to get Windows to start. But it fixed a ton of graphics problems(buttons would not work, etc). Finally today, I got Settings back.

The big problem I have is battery life. Mine was good for 5-6 hours before the update. Now I am getting close to three. I don't see anything obvious causing it. (I develop software and am beta tester for some high performance software, so am VERY attentive to performance issues.) I saw another post earlier on the thread with a similar issue, but never a solution.

Another thing I have noticed is the fan speed is running higher when plugged in. Even with identical power plan settings for battery/plugged, fan speeds up when it is plugged in considerably. Stumpted. Only clue I have is I installed the Intel ME Engine, which I had not before. I'm going to try uninstalling that next.

    Anyone suggestions?

    Thanks!!

I lost my burning software power to go.. that was it for me. Plus, if I upgraded to the newer blue tooth driver it would kill that to.. Other then that, 8.1 did seem to be ok. Being that Samsung pulled 8.1 from the store on my NP900X3E-K01US I decided to do a refresh with the option to keep all my data files. That went smooth, but I hand to reinstall all my desktop applications again so several hours of customizing 8 again. But in the end, I notice the overall system seems snappier and more stable. I'm not going to consider 8.1 again until I see something from Samsung themselves pushing it. Although, the old windows mail really is unusable, I'll just use my web yahoo or Google one. Too much was changed in 8.1 it seemed to break too many applications. MS should have just built the better UI at launch. But if your experiencing sever performance issues I strongly suggest doing the system refresh with the option to keep personal documents intact. Its not worth the struggle with Samsung themselves are not ready for 8.1. If you don't see 8.1 in the windows store, that is a telling sign IMO.

    UPDATE:
Well a bunch more windows updates showed up and after installing all of them, the windows 8.1 promptly shows itself up in the windows store again. There are a couple of apps, like the Facebook app in modern that won't install unless I install the 8.1 again. I'm tempted to try it again. I've switched by buring software to Nero burning Rom which is suppose to support 8.1. I just wish there was an easier way to roll back 8.1 when thinks go south. Doing refreshes is time consuming process to get things they way I want them in W8. I will contact Samsung again via the chat to see if the ATB9 FHD is supports 8.1

After a clean installation of Windows 8.1 o.s. via USB key, I downloaded Windows 8.1 drivers & software for my Samsung Series 9 NP900X4C A01IT using NP900X4C A02IT model via SW Update (no Windows 8.1 drivers found for my NP900X4C A01IT using SW Update) with manual model selection; Settings software wasn't available in Windows 8.1 list of A02IT model, so I downloaded the Windows 8 version specific for my A01IT model.

Installed: Chipset, MEI, IRST, Video drivers, Airplane mode (all specific for Windows 8.1, A02IT model) and Settings (for Windows 8, A01IT model). Touchpad, wi-fi and bluetooth are ok with default Microsoft Windows 8.1 drivers. Function (Fn) keys are ok after Settings installation.

Until now it seems that everything is working well with my Series 9 NP900X4C A01IT.

Similar experience as Andrea with my NP900X4C-A01SE, but I did a clean 8.1 install from USB iso.

Samsung drivers installed: Airplane mode, chipset and ELAN touchpad,
Samsung software; SW Update and Settings (from Win 8, same as Andrea)

    Everything seems to work nicely,

Well, after a few weeks of modest success I screwed up something today. The big issue is the AMD drive (Series 7 770Z7E). Disabled AMD, and it turns it back on. Delete the software, it gets it again. Certain actions were causing "Thread stuck in device driver" Finally, the screen wouldn't come on at all. Mouse would show up on it, but that's it.

I am writing this just as a word or warning. I though I was done and all was stable. And here I am rolling back to 8.0 recovery. I think I will stay there a while. I never did figure out the battery life issues, so it will be nice to get my battery back.

This is actually an Intel driver issue (at least, in my experience). Knocking it down to an older version can fix this problem.

Well this is annoying. I have default drivers for my HD4000 and GT640M on a np700z5c series 7 chronos, but I think something else is up. My laptop is EXTREMELY slow when it resumes from sleep. Like, it takes 5+ seconds, and is choppy getting like 5 frames per second and dropping letters and everything. This is on a quad ivy bridge CPU with a samsung 840 SSD. I don't know if it's a driver issue, but it hasn't happened until I updated to 8.1 so it must be.

I'm annoyed with Samsung lately. I think I'm definitely going to upgrade to a broadwell laptop when they're out and get a Surface Pro 3 or something similar. Samsung support has been crappy to me lately >.< and I have my desktop for gaming.

Okay here's my review, i have updated my laptop NP740U3E touchscreen + AMD 8570 graphic version, the steps for update is
    1. reset it to the factory version (of course it's windows 8)
    2. update all of windows 8 needs (i didn't upgrade the drivers from SW update)
    3. restart then go to store and download the windows 8.1
    4. restart and install the windows 8.1
    5. Log in to desktop (i do this normally without any issue) and open SW update, there are some updates for drivers.
    6. Update the drivers from the SW update
    7. after that all of the functions works normally (including brightness, ambient sensor, airplane mode, graphic mode, amd catalyst (mine is not beta), Lan driver and wifi works normally, Sleep mode still normal, Battery do normal
    8. there's some improvement for my laptop (my RAM management become more efficient, my graphic's memory is increased, startup become a bit faster (about 1-2 seconds).

this is my review with my laptop version ativ book 7 and good luck :)

    Hey fugunaga,
when you start SW Update in Windows 8.1, are there any Samsung tools (like Settings) or just drivers? I want to wait with my 740u3e until a working settings application is published...

Hey guys, is it safe for me to install the graphics driver (10.18.10.3304) provided by SW Update if I already installed the one from Windows update (10.18.10.3316)? My laptop model is NP370R4E-S06PH. AMD (13.152.0.0) was already installed through Windows update so that's why I can use demanding programs without lag but I still can't open the Catalyst Control Center. Will the graphics driver update gain me access to AMD settings?

I recently updated my Book 9 Plus to Windows 8.1, and I am not able to access the full touchpad settings. There is a touchpad program that has limited options, but it doesn't have things like modifying scroll direction or drag-and-drop behavior. I just reinstalled SW Update and installed the Touchpad update that showed up, but it still is not the full version. Does anyone know why this might be?

Search the touchpad driver installation package for ETDAniConf.exe. It's a more advanced control panel than Samsung's default ETDSimpleUI.exe. If you can't find it by searching your computer then use SW Update's Find model option to find the package and export it to a folder of your choice.

    1. the screen become sharper than before but the text is smaller than before (maybe full HD effect)
    2. when i log in at the first startup (powering on the laptop) the screen dimmed (arround 0.5 ms), i don't know why but this issue is always happen and i ignore it because it doesn't affect anything to me
    3. my graphics memory at DXDIAG improved , from 5843 MB when i was in windows 8, and now 6099 MB in this windows 8.1

What version of Settings are you using? You probably need to search around in SW Update's database for the latest version (listed under the new NP940X3G).

Samsung don't provide a changelog for the BIOS updates.

There have been two BIOS updates for my X4C (P**ABK) in less than a month since 8.1 was officially released so I presume the changes are intended to improve 8.1 compatibility. If you do update the BIOS I recommend you use the standalone BIOS Update program (more details in the first post in this thread).

My Samsung NP700Z3C came from technical assistance yesterday, because Windows update 8.1 failed and a bunch of things were wrong (F4 key not working was one). Everything is like it was new, with Windows 8.

They (Samsung Portugal) can't tell me accurately that 8.1 update will now work without any problems.

Now, I'm seeing BIOS update P07ABJ too, but with BIOSupdate.exe tool the link is dead...
    Is it temporary?!

I'm about to try installing Windows 8.1 update again, but now with everything stock. Should I wait for this BIOS update?
And about UEFI, should I try to get rid of it?

    Thank you all.

    1. Use Samsung Recovery Solution to make a full bootable backup onto a flash drive before you go any further.

    2. Shouldn't the full BIOS filename be much longer? eg ITEM_20131114_21268_WIN_P10ABK.exe for my X4C works OK. Downloading using the standalone BIOS update program reveals the full path if you select download. I would get that BIOS update done before trying the 8.1 upgrade again. it might fix whatever broke during your previous 8.1 upgrade attempt.

    3. You shouldn't need to touch UEFI. If you do you will lose your recovery partition and the existing Windows 8.

    1. Yes, I'll do that now (I think I can do it with external USB 2.0 HDD).

    2. I used the standalone BIOS update, on download button, and it tried to open that link.

    3. It's only because my old story (started here).

I need to replace my HDD with my SSD and put the HDD on caddy replacing optical drive, so I can use it as a storage drive (1TB).
I'm thinking to do the following steps:
    - Upgrade to Windows 8.1 from stock.
    - Clone EFI and Windows partitions from HDD to SSD with Paragon Migrate OS to SSD 3.0.
    - Resize Windows partition on HDD and create a new one only for storage. With this I'm trying to maintain the HDD drive working with F4 key, recovery and other stuff.
    - When I'm running Windows from SSD, remove all HDD partition letters, and use only the storage partitions I've created before.

Should I use this steps? There is a better way to do that?

Thank you for your advice! :)

@fearbrain: Before trying another 8.1 upgrade (or anything else for that matter), I highly recommend you follow Johns advice and create a bootable factory image backup, which can only be done to a 32GB USB stick, NOT to an external HDD. And don't get a SanDisk, they act as a HDD, not a removable USB drive, making them incompatible with Recovery's Create Boot Disk feature.

With this stick you can re-image the drive yourself (as Samsung just did for you), no matter how messed up it becomes. OR image a new SSD if you want.

I'm on my phone now which makes linking difficult. But check the backup notes in the opening post of this thread. And there are hundreds of posts about that procedure in other threads here as well.

    Update:

Follow the steps in this post to perform the Recovery backup and cloning. It will preserve Recovery after moving to the SSD. If you keep the bootable USB backup safe (which is a Recovery in itself with the Win8 factory image) and leave the original Recovery partitions intact on the HDD, you can also delete the Recovery partitions on the SSD to free up the space.

My Samsung Series 7 Chronos NP770Z7E-S01NL received a BIOS update last night. Everything came to life here !

UEFI/SecureBoot is ok now. No more crashes. And SW Update recognizes the machine and gives me all kinds of new updates available.

So if you have a NP770Z7E be sure to check out SW Update now.

after 8.1, I have the icon SW Update. But it's different. It forces me to type in my model number/serial number, and then asks me to export and save this long list of available software. What happened to the other app where I can just download the items right from SW Update, not save them to some other folder of my choosing?

Thanks John, I couldn't find that file, but you got me pointed in the right direction.

If anyone is curious, I opened SW Update and did the Find Model. Then I selected Windows 8 (instead of 8.1) as the operating system. I downloaded the Touchpad drivers and then went to C:\Program Files\Elantech and ran the uninstaller to get rid of the 8.1 driver that SW Update installed. After a restart, I installed the drivers that I had exported, and it is now working with all the features from before.

Evidently, Samsung hasn't update the Touchpad drivers for 8.1 to the same level as 8. Thanks again!

According to Microsoft the Windows 8 Atheros BT driver is compatible with 8.1.

Did you make sure that BT is turned on in Settings (Fn+F1)?

If you want to get back to Windows 8 then you can use Samsung Recovery Solution to reinstall the factory image. However, be forewarned that this will delete everything on you C drive so you should first back up all your user files.

If SW Update is not properly recognising your model then you probably need either a BIOS update and/or a newer version of SW Update. Use the standalone BIOS update program (link in first post in this thread) to check for a newer BIOS.

    Hi All
I just found this thread and wished I had weeks ago before updating.. I have only really seen an issue with the sw updater not allowing me to update the BIOS however I have just spoken to a service agent and he backed up the conversation earlier in this thread saying there would be an update at the end of the month.. fingers crossed.

I did a refresh on my NP900X3E-K01US and ran all the windows updates and sw updates and installed 8.1 after that. I think some more sw updates followed and the bios update was the last thing that I installed. So far, I really like new features of 8.1 and really have zero issues except one. When I boot up it takes a good couple of minutes for the wifi to start working. I think it may have something to do with the last bios update. I'm thinking of downloading the wifi drivers from Intel.. maybe that would help?

Any news for np700z5a amd video card? Tried to search the thread but for some reason it doesn't work.

I am currently using leshcat drivers, they seem somewhat stable but not as stable as what I had on windows 8.

Intel issued new drivers for the 6235 WiFi on 14th Nov. Definitely worth trying. In my case the slow WiFi startup was fixed by a previous Intel driver update but the latest one gives a useful boost to the weak signal performance.

Thanks John. I updated. It still seems to be a bit of a lag before the wifi works after booting but I think it may not be as bad as before. Really never timed how long. Not a big deal. Everything's working very well on 8.1 other then that. I'm sure these drivers are a improvement on what I had which was much older. These drivers were marked for 8.1 as well so that is good.

Wish i had seen this before i updated my 700Z5A! :)
I didnt think it would cause such mayhem! Windows 7 to 8 seemed like a smaller jump then 8 to 8.1

I figured if anything went really wrong I could just roll back with Samsung recovery 5 but no its says "This computer does not support it" since i updated. The dual graphics no longer works and it took me ages to get that working on windows 8. The AMD card is showing as not working. I also use windows mail (not windows live mail) and it runs as it will pop up showing my emails being downloaded and also displays the notification noise to signify that my emails have been downloaded but i cant open the program to actually view them.

I just want to go back to windows 8!!! (Never thought i would say that). :)

I feel for you. I had to do a refresh on my NP900X3E-K01US which meant doing allot of work to get things back the way I like. It keep my personal data files but that's about it. One thing I notice is amazon just priced my NP900X3E-K01US which has the FHD matte i7 2.0 and 256 SSD to 1820 USD with only 2 left they say. I'm thinking they are ending life on this. Too bad, really love this machine to death. Freaking fast, lots of storage space, and MATTE 1080P. Really perfect machine. But it seems Samsung is going to kill it off :(

I have just left it reinstalling from recovery. Had to reinstall windows 8 back over the top of 8.1 which involved wiping everything. I then was able to reinstall recovery (I had tried uninstalling and reinstalling recovery on 8.1 which then wouldnt reinstall as said it was incompatible with my comp. Hopefully I will be back to how I was setup in about 20 more mins. I had installed a few things since I last made a system image in April but way better then the issues i was having with 8.1. Really have not enjoyed the issues created with Windows 8 and dont really even like the new tablet tile layout. Its very tacky imho.

So yeah im back in. Not sure if there was a better way to do it or not, that was the quickest way i could think of to get back to as close to how i was before 8.1 screwed everything up though.

Think it highlights how important it is though to keep as recent as possible a backup image to help restore when issues like this happen.
I was worried that when i tried to reinstall windows 8 it was going to tell me something daft like it couldnt because i already had the most recent version of windows (8.1) on there but thankfully it didnt.

I wonder how much notice Microsoft has given the likes of Samsung in regards to these updates? Im not bothering to update mine again. More head aches then its worth! :)

From what I've heard, Samsung is mainly working on updating systems that shipped with W8 to 8.1. Being your system shipped with 7, I would wait a bit like you say before attempting 8.1 again. But personally, I don't mind 8.1 and the new windows mail is much improved and I have a handful of decent apps I use on a daily basis. The file manager and under the hood stuff is definitely improved IMO over w7. But when you don't have proper driver support its going to be bad and I can understand your sediments. Personally, I feel W8 gives you bonus stuff with the modern side over seven with basically no additional cost. I have paid a few bucks for a couple apps but there is allot of decent apps for free at this point. Its a good start. Once they get a real CEO (hopefully the guy from Ford) things will get really aggressive towards the positive end.

I dont really like the whole apps system. That's what my phone is for. Having them open on screen and then having to go up to the corner is just a mega pain in the butt.
I still also prefer pop3 over imap and the fact they removed pop3 support in the windows mail app meant i couldnt use it anyway. It is also just a really basic mail app more suited to a phone/tablet then a computer. The fact the windows mail from vista had stopped working on my machine made it an incentive that i rolled back.
I still prefer an outlook style mail program and I got used to with windows mail and it has so many more features. I don't like the fact Microsoft are copying the path of Apple and feel we are all too thick to use our computers the way we want and have to dumb down and oversimplify everything to the point that we actually can do less on them. If i wanted to use a tablet as a computer i would have bought a tablet. I dont :)
It also added the windows button that just takes you to the annoying start screen as well. I installed Pokki so i could avoid having to use that and so i ended up with two buttons there as well.

The graphics drivers not working also really bugged me as took me ages to get them to play nice in windows 8. Hopefully they get these issues fixed up real quick for those who dont mind the Windows 8 layout. I only installed it for the performance improvement. Does not seem good that it prompts you to download the upgrade without any warning or mention to first check that your machine wont get broken and with no real way to roll back. Seems like shoddy planning on Microsofts part.

Boy, did I get that wrong: I thought the fix for 8.1 would be called 8.11 ( here)
