On 8.1 desktop you can right click task bar, select properties, navigation tab, and put a tick in both 1st and 3rd option under "Start Screen". Should load straight to desktop if that helps.
I installed Windows Live Mail 2012 for desktop mail client. Not sure about POP3 support, but it might appear familiar and more feature rich than the app. Used the downloader from Microsoft and just selected Mail component, but may be a complete download available elsewhere.

I looked through this thread and didn't find any solutions to my problems.
I want the old touchpad settings back, where i could select the different gestures that i wanted.
SW update just gives me the option to export all my files and not update, i tried updating the Sw update without any luck and i updated the BIOS but i already had the newest version. I tried different touchpad drivers and softwares from the samsung site and non has helped.
How the hell do i get my touchpad settings back? -

Reporting success and general happiness .... finally did it this past weekend. The whole process took hours, but my computer seems to be running a bit better..
Details ... I did have to run the installation a second time since the first time failed. Luckily it didn't do a second download. As suggested, I made sure everything was up to date with respect to SW Update and WIndows Update, ran the 8.1 upgrade, installed the new updates from SW Update, and finally installed the Windows updates. Machine seems to be running a little smoother but its just a feeling; I have no data. Restarting may take a little longer, but I find that my machine is not usable for the first 3-5 minutes anyway. I haven't look at the power usage in detail, but it may use a little more power as reported by the Samsung Settings program. The AMD video driver was updated and the switchable graphics are available. Prior to the upgrade, I was very frustrated with the Beta display drivers. I can't comment on the settings for the touchpad as it seems to be fine the way it is and I don't use Bluetooth so I cannot comment on how its working. Although, I did notice that a new Bluetooth driver was installed in the process.
Anomalies ... sometimes the Catalyst Control Panel and the switchable graphics windows will not display. One time when they wouldn't display, I rebooted and then they displayed. Not sure if the reboot was necessary for something to reset. The labels on the icons on the windows desktop appear to be out of focus. Everything else is in focus, so I think its because of the 3d-looking font being used.
The differences between 8 and 8.1 are very small from an outward appearance. I haven't made any effort to figure out what has changed or how to have my machine start in desktop mode. After many months, I've adapted to the quirks of Windows 8. -
And do you have any idea how i get SW update working like it used to? Because i can still only use it to extract files. I can't see any updates like i used to. -
-
For those who are having graphics switching issues, try this.
If your application is running low on FPS and you are certain that it is using the Intel graphics, plug out the power connector to your laptop and plug it back in.
Let me know how that works out for you guys. =) -
I dont like Windows Live Mail. I found the way it organized my emails was annoying. It does work with pop3 though -
Does anyone here knows how I could get my CCC back. I always get an error message saying there are no settings that can be configured using AMD CCC when I open configure switchable graphics. Any solutions?
-
This was the problem that I ran into when trying to roll back to a more stable AMD driver. I disabled the card, rebooted, tried to install an earlier driver only to be told that there is no card to be configured. In the end, I somehow managed to get to a point where the laptop was unbootable even in recovery mode and at that point made the decision to refresh my PC back to Windows 8.
And can I say that I have never been happier. Everything works now, I've managed to get some good tweaks for game playing and I only lost two programs where the disks are back in Australia. -
I so badly wanted to configure the settings. -
Hello,
I'm new to this forum (hello) and english is not my first language so please don't judge
I don't usually post on any forums, but I don't know what to do with my laptop, and I've seen some nice and clever posts earlier on this theard.
I have samsung NP350E5c-S04PL with windows 8. I was looking to presonalize my system on microsoft site, and it asked me if I wanted a free update to 8.1. I was excited cause I kind of like updates... and agreed instantly, I even thought it would improve switching of my graphics cards. Boy, little did I know... Long story short I ended up restoring my laptop to factory defaults after my graphics card driver broke down. System was running poorly, and after just one restart it wouldn't start again. (Luckly I menaged to copy my Skyrim saves to a flash drive.. 30 lvl, barely scratched the main story line) So heres my questions:
I have now a fresh, working windows 8.0. Should I try again and update to 8.1 (I told you, I like(d) updates)? If so, should I download drivers via SW Update or amd site? Or should I just stick to 8.0 and if so, should I stick to SW update, or can I update drivers on my own? What is the right path to having my laptop at its best performance? Till yesterday I had win 8.0 with latest graphics drivers from amd site witch was great for the games, but switching wasn't too smooth, and sometimes windows would disable amd card and report some error (rarely). In the other hand SW update wouldn't download the latest driver but some from 2012 and say that is the latest - very bad for games (almost no difference between playing with HD4000 and 7670M), but no errors. Please help me to choose the right way
best regards from Poland

I would wait until Samsung add to / update that list. Microsoft won't withdraw the offer of a free upgrade. I haven't tried Windows 8.1 myself yet because I've yet to learn about any improvements that I need urgently and I don't want to find out that it breaks what is currently OK. There's also a rumour about Windows 8.2 appearing early next year which might bring the usability improvements that 8.1 failed to deliver.

My NP900X3B-A01US has been working fine on 8.1 after some driver updates. The only issue that I'm having is that when the laptop sits and I don't use it but it's still on, the fan actually ramps up to full speed. I think I saw some folks mentioning this issue much earlier in this topic. Anyone come up with a fix yet?
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Do a little research: Run HWiNFO and enable the sensors. Then start logging the data to a file and leave the computer on idle. When the fan ramps up to full speed then stop the logging and look in the file (it's a csv file so Excel should open it). What was the CPU load during idle and did the CPU temperature progressively increase to over 70C (usually the threshold temperature for the fan to get noisy)?
If you find that the CPU load and temperature remain relatively low but the fan gets noisy then there must be some low level interaction between Windows 8.1 and the BIOS and perhaps some erroneous data is getting passed through.

I just got an update for the touchpad driver for my ATIV Book 8. Now I can't reverse two-finger scroll, any tips? Thanks!
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Find a program called "ETDAniConf.exe" and then disable reverse scroll in the scrolling section.
If you can't find ETDAniConf.exe on you computer then use SW Update to save the touchpad installation file and look in the X64 folder.
ETDAniConf.exe has many options that are the same as the default ETDSimpleUI.exe but there are some, such as this, that are different.

Appreciate it, thanks. Sorry, I didn't think to search since the driver just came out last night for my computer.

Ugh.
Updated my 900X4D-A06US recently to 8.1 and having lots of problems lately. The worst of all is the whole computer sort of locks up (although you CAN move the move) and no programs will open, you can't get into Task Manager from CTRL-ALT-DEL, and you can't even do a proper shutdown/restore without holding the power button in 5 seconds to do a hard shutdown. Also notice the computer won't turn back on automatically when the lid is opened after bring in sleep/hibernation. Trackpad stuff is awful too, it doesn't seem to hold settings, etc. I've done the SW updates and they're installed, best I can tell, but still... problems.... blah.
Anyone else experiencing these same kind of issues? -
-
I have a problem that's mentioned earlier. I can only export from SWUpdate. how do I get it back to what it was so I can just update directly in the program?
-
-
Your experience sounds different to mine. The only game I'm interested in is FSX. When I ran the update, I knew that something was wrong as soon as I played FSX because of constant crashes to the desktop. It turns out that the ATI drivers for Win 8.1 don't play nicely with FSX, but every attempt I made to roll back to an earlier version failed until I reached the point where Win 8.1 was unrecoverable.
As I say, the laptop is now back to Win 8.0 and works perfectly. I'm extremely reluctant to try the update again unless the graphics card drivers are fixed (as in fixed for FSX). -
I wish I would have seen this before updating two or three weeks ago...
Since I have updated, I seem to have a battery issue, my usual 7-8hrs long lasting battery seems to be reduced to mere 3 to 4 hours of use with only light browsing and music playing. I couldn't fin much about battery issues and windows 8.1, has anyone had similar experience? Or is there known problems with windows 8.1 & battery problems? -

what the hell...
I installed a touchpad driver update (8.1), hoping that the additional settings like 2 finger clicking for middle mouse key would be back but it's not only still gone (ETDSimpleUI_Win8.exe), they even removed it from ETDSimpleUI.exe which was a previous workaround.
WHAT THE HELL.
I exported the 8.0 driver from sw-update and installed it with all the options back... but what are they thinking with those 8.1 drivers? seriously...
Instead of fixing the broken 8.1 driver they make it completely crappy by even removing the possibility for a workaround...
regarding the reduced battery runtime mentioned above... after my first upgrade to 8.1 I also experienced terrible battery runtime. Not only that, my CPU would be stuck at 800mhz (2,5GHz i7). I was wondering why everything is so laggy, checked the system monitor, and it wouldn't increase the clock rate.
Had to restore factory settings, and re-update to 8.1. Not everything is back to normal. -
Do you think I should downgrade back to Windows 8? Fastest but more pain in the solution, I'll probably have to do factory reset and backup all my files.
Or should drivers be coming out relatively soon? -
I still keep an eye out on this thread to see when there are stable drivers for my laptop (NP7403U3E-X02AU) because it sounds like there are some minor improvements in memory usage. But I will be very wary about attempting another upgrade without (1) backups, (2) image of my current system and (3) a strong drink nearby. -

I have an NP900X3C-A04US.
I contacted Samsung, and asked if I can upgrade to WIndows 8.1 - they indicated it was no problem. So, I upgraded. I've had no problems and everything seems to be working as expected, so I'm a bit confused why there seems to be so many problems. The trackpad works as it used to; hibernation and power management seems to work the same.
The only issue is that the SW Update program now only wants me to select my model number and download drivers - the old screen where new updates are shown is no longer shown. The SW Update program that downloaded is an older one than I currently have, so it won't install. Any suggestions??
thanks,
bert -
The only issue I still have - is also the SW Update tool. Does anybody know if Samsung will release an update to this, so we get back the automatic update alerts? Manually searching for my model and then checking the list of available downloads to see if there is any higher version number really sucks.
regards,
forsti -
I called Samsung and spoke to somebody in a US service center. They indicated that there were lots of issues and they weren't recommending anyone upgrade. They said that the drivers would eventually be fixed, but had no idea how long that might take.
I have to wonder why I had no issues other than SW Update, where others have. I didn't even have an issue with the trackpad. The only difference I can think of is that I did not install many of the Samsung or Intel programs in Windows 8.0. Maybe some of these were causing an issue.

NP740U3E-X02SE with AMD 8570.
I have tested both Clean Install and upgrade (dualboot). I have experienced no problems except with the AMD driver from Windows update. The screen went black with some flickering and I had to force a reboot. After reboot, the AMD card was disabled by windows. I than reinstalled the Samsung display driver and everything was fine.
I downloaded the available drivers for 8.1 and installed them manually with a reboot between. I also installed the newer version of Settings 2.2.0.5 (downloaded separately)
Everything work as expected but the new settings app are missing the BLE Charge battery to 80% I have to set this I bios and the flight mode has to be set in PC settings in windows.
Power consumption is very good (low) about 5w in idle and light usage gives me about 7 -8 hours. This is with the Samsung Optimized power profile. Boot from pressing the on/off to logon screen are about 7.5s (with fast startup activated)
The machine is very responsive, stable and switchable graphics works just fine. 3D mark 11 went from P1362 to P1469
Edit: Almost forgot. The new touchpad driver 11.7.19.9 gives some kind of hardware acceleration of the touchpad. Totally smoth scroll and pinch to zoom in metro apps and IE 11 Desktop. Possibly a taste of Prescision Touchpad. like video from this guy:

I update my 7 Series Chronos 780Z this weekend to 8.1 after following the Samsung 8.1 guide and no problems at all. Steam games all play perfectly (maybe better than before).
The AMD 8850/HD4000 GPU driver now shows as 13.152-130830a
http://www.samsung.com/us/windows-8-pcs/win81_Internet_Update.pdf
I only did the drivers as per the SWUpdate app which included a graphics driver update. I didn't do the Windows AMD GPU 8800M update that came up as an option after 8.1 was installed. -
Hi followers,
I updated my Series7 Chronos to Windows 8.1 a couple of days ago after the saving and backing up precautions.
Ran the Samsung software updates first to ensure their latest bits were all correct, then rebooted and went for it with Win 8.1 Took forever for it to update and reload 8.1 and after a few restarts instigated by the install processes it seems to be working.
However, I have now come across one issue that I haven't resolved yet. Samsung SW Update has a Bluetooth update (Ver 3.1.1309.386) wishing to be installed all 300Mg of it ! I have tried half a dozen of times and restarting the machine to ensure a clean un-interrupted install but alas get the following around 85% of the way through the software installation process "Bluetooth Driver Installation Failed(-10)" Hopefully Samsung will catch up and sort this at some point in the not to distant future. Other than that is all seems to have picked up on Win8.1 and the Samsung SW Updates.
If of course anyone knows a work around on the Bluetooth then let me know, but it does seem to connect to my Samsung Galaxy S3 by Bluetooth on the windows drivers which it has obviously installed during the upgrade to Win8.1
Will post if I come across any other glitches spotted.

Hi all,
I'm experiencing graphic card issues after upgrading to Windows 8.1. My laptop model is NP700Z3A-S03US
I downloaded the required drivers using new version of SWUpdate( here's a screenshot of what I've downloaded), and installed them both.
Both devices report that they're working properly, but I can't launch any videogame, it says "failed to create d3d device". Also, I can't launch dxdiag utility, I get this error. It looks like it just doesn't recognize my videocard
In my switchable graphics settings, I set everything as max perfomance. What steps should I take next to resolve this issue? Thanks. -
Well, I got AMD CCC back after updating the driver using the ones provided by SW Update. I should have done this last month and shouldn't have installed the ones provided by Windows Update.
Anyway, I think it's safe to say that those who are using NP370R4E-S06 can safely upgrade now to Windows 8.1. In my experience, when I upgraded to Windows 8.1, I didn't encounter any black screen issues, only the screen brightness and bluetooth issue and my AMD Driver being blocked by Windows. A few days later, windows installed the AMD driver without my knowledge. That fixed the blocked AMD driver but not the access to CCC. I also installed the Intel driver provided by windows and didn't encounter any problems from it. I installed most of the drivers and the brightness patch provided by SW Update, except the touchpad driver, allshare, and home sync. Now, my laptop's as good as the way I bought it. -
I have a np530u4c. Installed wibdows 8.1 in UEFI mode from scratch. No issues but the wireless... There are a lot of issues with the intel advanced n 6000 sonething, maybe 6530...? All the drivers I tried gave problens withvrandom disconnects, but now I believe the issue ia with Settings... Therevis a newer Settings version that doesnt appear in my SWupdate, I downloaded it searching SW update for the NP530U4E-X02PT. That and also the express cache driver is more recent than mine, and I also installed that. Now I can control BT in Setting independently, which wasnt possible before, and had no more issues with wireless, no more random disconnects. Now I'm waiting for samsung to support my laptop in SWUpdate.

I was very surprised about that, since in the past, installing individual AMD drivers have not worked on our Sandy Bridge models with AMD PowerXpress GPU (Radeon 6xxx): We've depended on Samsung to release combo packages with both Intel HD3000 and AMD drivers. But this worked perfectly for me in combination with Win 8.1's built-in Intel HD3000 driver. I uninstalled all AMD software first, using Catalyst Uninstaller.
Note that 2013 Series 7 / Ativ Book 8 users (who have the newer AMD Enduro 8xxx GPU) have reported in the Owners Lounge that they could NOT get the latest LeekM drivers to work. I don't have an explanation for why it would work on older models and not the newer ones. -
To users who have ExpressCache and find that it stops working after updating to 8.1: This problem can usually be solved by uninstalling ExpressCache (Programs & Features control panel), reboot, re-install ExpressCache, reboot. I recommend downloading the latest ExpressCache version 1.0.94 from from SW Update and install that -- it's still a very old version, but it works.
Disk performance can be significantly degraded after the update. To improve that, clean out any unnecessary files (CCleaner and Disk Cleanup), defrag the drive, then run BOOTOPT.BAT in the ExpressCache programs folder. You must do it in this order, as ExpressCache requires a defragged drive in order to perform its optimization. -
Hi
I have a NP740U3E-S04UK (Samsung Series 7 Ultra Notebook 128GB SSD 13.3", with upgraded SSD (512GB mSATA Samsung [PM841 Series MZMTD512HAGL-00000 mSATA 512GB SATA III MLC Internal SSD] ).
A) Is it safe to upgrade to Windows 8.1?
B) Do the disk performance issues mentioned above apply to SSDs or just to HDs?
C) Are there any real benefits for upgrading to Win 8.1 in any case?(!)
Many thanks

Is there a solution for the reduced battery life after upgrading?
-
Frustrated due the delay of Samsung updates I decided to contact them.
I just had a chat with Samsung italian operator. At first he said my NP900X4C-A01IT is not supported with win 8.1.
When I show him a page on samsung website where it says that (a generic) NP900X4C is upgradable he reported the missing drivers, saying thank you...
Quite disappointed. -
According to the ZDNet article linked below, a number of the Microsoft updates for today sound like they could affect compatibility issues such as we have seen with Samsung laptops.
Microsoft to release many non-security updates tomorrow
The article (and the update descriptions) are not specific, but I wonder if this is the big Microsoft Update that we (at least I) have been expecting ever since the the 8.1 debacle began. As Atom Ant posted here other rumors say it will only be in January, and in the form of an 8.2 update.
As I have posted a few times (such as here) I believe both Microsoft and Samsung are to blame for this mess. Samsung for being slow to release updates AND for hacky driver and BIOS implementations in the first place. Microsoft for releasing what was supposed to be a minor update (a service pack) BUT which broke compatibility with Win8, thus forcing vendors to rewrite drivers -- which they'd already had to do for Win8 a year earlier.
If you consider the support and development costs to vendors each time Microsoft pulls a stunt like this, they are not making it very appealing for their partners to be innovative and aggressive about PC products -- at a time when Microsoft needs their help in securing the future of Windows.
Hopefully (but maybe doubtful) Samsung will learn a lesson too, and begin writing software that adheres to standards instead of doing everything their own way. This applies to their PCs as well as their Android products. They seem to think that software is their strength, when it's really their weakness.zooster likes this. -
How can I check whether the ATI card of Intel one is active? Because I feel like in some applications my ATI card doesn't turn on, and everything runs on Intel, leading to performance issues.
