Cin - Thanks for the recommendation. I have been using it for about a week now and it does seem to pick up quite a bit more than S&D! Glad I came across the post. Thx.

I have used avira for 2 years with no problems . between avast and avira all my computers are well protected . I use the pay versions though , they have caught all kinds of e-mail virus that my ISP was SUPPOSED to catch with it's virus scanner , wonder what they use ?

You should uninstall the premium version, download the free version and install it.

    My preferred (free) AV.
(Every downloaded email will also be scanned before you read it, so no worries about a 'missing' (dedicated) email scanner).
    Nr.2 is Avast.

the 3month english promotion still stands though

sweeet! ive been meaning to drop my illegal version of kaspersky for a while now, finally got around to doing it.

um... ive always had this question about antivir, never figured it out
for on-demand scans, is there anyway for it to ask what to do at the end of the scan? i like to scan overnight, and clean it up when i wake up.

i know theres a way for it to automatically clean everything up, but i want it to leave everything till the end, so i can pick which ones to delete

Yes, Avira is awesome. I used run AVG, but it slowed down my laptop. Avira is a lot faster, and it updates pretty frequently too. The only thing that I hate is the Avira Notifying pop-up whenever you successfully update the program.

i really like avira just be aware avira does have more fp's than most av's out there so be careful what you delete before making sure its actually a virus. i always recc uploding it to them as well as maybe kaspersky to get a response to see if its really a virus or not. make sure to quarantine the file instead of just deleting it. ive seen avira delete needed files that were not virus' and it made a mess. but as long as you use the quarnatine you'll be okay because you can restore then if need be, otherwise imo avira is very nice and they are adding much much more to the free version coming in the near future...

Yeah this works great. But I read on the neowin forums a fews weeks ago some posters complaining that the fix was undone by an Avira update but all they had to do was redo the fix and it's ok again for a while. I think they meant core update not the definitions update which in my experience didn't undo the fix but I'm not certain.

But this wont be for the free personal use version would it? I checked out the link, but I could not find anything that referred to the free version...or maybe since it is late where I am at, I may have missed it.

    ^^ Yep.
I was using Avira like 4 years ago, then switch to BitDefender and now ESET.

ESET Smart Security 4 is the best one out there right now.

    Hi ya, Cin! :)

Based on your feedback, I uninstalled AVAST from my mom's computer and installed the free version of AVIRA.

AVAST seemed to be locking her computer up every so often on boot, and sometimes in the middle of browsing, and I just wasn't feeling the interface.

So far, I really like AVIRA!

I like it MUCH better than Avast! I use NOD32 on my own computers, but if ESET doesn't get its act together with ESS v4, I may make the leap to the paid version of Avira for myself!
