Gah, I'm no further forward with the NFC tags...

They are increasing the size of the screen to try and eliminate the need for physical boards. Check out the HTC One X or S.

Samsung Captivate Glide, Motorola Droid 3/4, HTC MyTouch 4G Slide, and the LG Optimus Q2 are all dual-core QWERTY sliders.
From that list you have Tegra 2 in the Captivate Glide and Optimus Q2, OMAP 4430 in the Droid 3/4, and Qualcomm's MSM 8260 Snapdragon S3 in the HTC MyTouch 4G Slide. More are coming...
If they'd just improve how the keyboard works, it would be a much more worthwhile endeavor. The iPhone still has the absolute best keyboard I've ever used on a capacitive touch screen and it's only 3.5", with the WP7 keyboard coming in at a close second. There's no adaptation to how the user types with Android, so instead of the keyboard learning how you type, you have to conform to how the keyboard handles input...
For screen size comparisons, it's best done to the Galaxy Note... 5.3" is just massive. -
While I've gotten somewhat competant on a software QWERTY, I still find myself making too many mistakes with one, little things like missing the space bar and instead hitting the bezel below it (particularly bad in landscape mode), trying to delete a mistake and instead just entering "llllll" due to the close proxmity of the two keys (I've done it 6 times in the course of writing this, yes I'm using Gingerbread software QWERTY because I stabbed my hand and as such can't move my hand much or balance the open slider) or autocorrect just being clueless and accepting errors that are so out there or inputing something totally different than what you expected.
Then there's the lack of meaningful feedback, occasional input lag when u really go to town, and the fact that hapltic feedback makes the keyboard lag more pronounced. SwiftKey and Swype havent really done it for me and its to the point that I might end up switching platforms if Android manufacturers decide to go slate only except for the low end or lower mid range.
Oh and did I mention that text selection is awful when using the landscape software QWERTY? Because it is. Scrolling through the tiny text box is a pain, selecting where to place the insertion point is a pain and if you try to do it with the keyboard stowed, either it doesn't put the point where you want it, leaving it in its former position, or it jumps to the top of the text box. Both of these occur probably 40% of the time but its annoying. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
L.M.A.O. @ the typos. So sorry about the hand though... what happened?!
Have you ever used a device like the Galaxy S's haptic feedback? It's handled by Immersion, and it's somehow got a completely different feel than normal. It's like the actuator itself is attached to the glass. It's very precise and stout... and very fast. I can type out a super quick SMS, and every key I press on the software keyboard registers a separate distinct vibe. Compared to other devices I've had, the Galaxy S has a very distinct feel... Plus if my Captivate weren't in a case, it will literally walk off the table when it rings and vibrates. It's kind of hard to explain, but it's a night and day difference between my Atrix and Captivate/Tab 7.7. The vibes on the Atrix will all blend together or just not vibe, if you're typing fast. -
I like the sound of that.
-
Hah yeah I was trying to separate a stack of frozen hamburgers. One should never keep the stack vertical when shoving a knife between the patties...it went clear through the fifth stab and BAM into my hand.
I'm attempting to recall if I turned on haptic feedback during my ownership of the Galaxy S Stratosphere and honestly I can't remember....the main thing I do remember is the reboot issues I had haha. I think I did and indeed was pleased.
My D3's haptic feedback would probably be considered sloppy compared to the Galaxy S: it works but when you speed up its like the atrix...it either stops or just vibrate constantly when typing fast...id argue that typing fast is when one would need it the most. -
[Update: Live!] Poweramp Has A Good Year, Goes $1.99 For 48 Hours To Celebrate
I typically don't buy apps (other than a bunch of the $.10 sale ones) and have been using winamp for my music since forever, but decided to jump on this little sale for poweramp. Only used the trial for about 30 mins and decided it was probably worth the $2, for stability alone (winamp is really bad for force closes for the silliest reasons). Also gapless playback and an equalizer that is supposedly pretty good.
Something that I never read anything about was the GN's vibrator/haptic feedback compared to the Nexus S... wow it is so much better. There were plenty of times that I had the NS in my pocket while walking and would not feel the vibrate for a text, the GN seems to have fixed that and I'm really happy with it. About the only thing I haven't been able to do is make it run an n64 rom (tony hawk pro skater 2) well but I suspect that it is poor coding on the emulator's part.
@step did you buy the tags? -
Not yet.
After a fair bit of reading it seems that NXP's new NFC chip, the NTAG203, is head and shoulders above older tags in every respect other than capacity ( it's a match for the Ultralight models but not the 1k/2k/4k ones) but very few places seem to have them.
One place that seems to stand out is this lot, as well as having a relatively large range of different types of tags they seem to be able to pair up whichever type of tag and model of NFC chip you want - but they don't list the NTAG203.
Anyway, I sent them a message last night asking if they sell it ( either under a different name or just not listed on the site) or, if not, whether they will in the future.
If they don't, I'll probably just go with whatever type they recommend. -
Anyone know what this error means and how I can fix it? Never got it before CM9, and I'm not out of space or anything. I've got it trying to install a few apps now.
-
It's a bug/issue present in CM9 and XXLPB and in some XXLPH... Unfixable until there's a new kernel source release...
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Interesting. I've not seen anything like that on CM9 on the OG Galaxy S... though I think we're using Nexus S kernel source that's adapted over.
I'd love to know exactly what they need source for to change mount points for target apk installs... is CM9 on the GS2 not using any of the internal NAND? -
What browser are you guys using for Droid? I mainly use the stock browser but have been playing with firefox. Im not sure if I like firefox. Maybe its because Im used to the stock browser. Thoughts on the two?
-
Our kernel on the CM9 is not as "native" as the GS1. Not only the GSI uses a more recent kernel atm, but is cleaner.
The GSII kernel is a bit hacked and has been messed with to fix stuff, but now they've fixed everything they could, and the issues left can only be fixed when samsung releases a new kernel source.
Yes, the GSI is using Nexus S kernel, that's why it's quite stable.
I don't quite know why they need the source, they've said that they need a new kernel to have everything fixed...
EDIT : I think CM9 is now considered STABLE
http://teamhacksung.org/wiki/index.php/Experimental:GT-I9100:Known_issues This page was filled with issues like RIL crashing, HW codec not being used, and such, and now it's clear as of 1st of March!
PLUS, there are now NIGHTLIES!
http://cm-nightlies.appspot.com/?device=galaxys2
http://developer.clockworkmod.com/do...ys2-signed.zip Here's the unofficial build with HW codec fixed
-
Ah okay. Interesting because if i remember correctly to earlier today, sideloading it worked fine.
It's using the internal NAND for me.
If you're on ICS, I'm using Chrome.
If not, then my favorite was Maxthon.
Ah interesting. Unfortunetly I have a submodel of the GSII (Epic 4G Touch on Sprint), so my releases come a bit slower and no nightlies.
Here's where I get it.
The kernel (at least on mine) sucks. It has no CWM, no OC/UV, and only On Demand, Userspace, and Performance governers. -
It only shows that error to certain apps under certain circumstances. I can't install large apps like Trial Xtreme and many other games...
What's your kernel version? Yeah, the US version of the GSII is more "deserted" so to speak (in XDA), because all the devs in CM9 (namely atinm, codeworkx, xplodwild) work all on the GSII EU...
-
Thanks, I'll have to try those browsers. I just installed opera and so far I like it. Any way to replace the stock browser with the another one and change the link on the home panel?
-
i couldnt stand either of them. im using dolphin mini hd. was using opera mini for a bit but i didnt like the way it handled videos on a site. (had to download the video to the sd card instead of streaming it).
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I'm using Chrome B1. B2 isn't compatible with CM9.
Still runs fine though, if a tad buggy.
There's no way to replace the stock browser, it has to stay, but you can set a new default. After you install another browser, upon launching a link or something it'll ask you what you want to open that link with and just make whichever the default you'd like.
What Android version are you using? -
Wow I like dolphin. Im using Dolphin hd. There was also dolphin mini in the market but no dolphin mini hd. What's the difference between dolphin hd and dolphin mini?
Im using froyo. Been meaning to update. Samsung Captivate -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Whut? Seriously?! OMG.
Please, let me help you. ICS runs like a dream on the Captivate, and even AOSP Gingerbread! Stuck on Samsung's Froyo is like... idk, I'm lost for words.
-
O_O at least get gingerbread man! also, i'm using dolphin min on my DX (liberty rom) as it seems to work the best for slower/older phones for me. i'll most likely switch to dolphin HD whenever i decide to finally upgrade. tried out a droid 4 bought on release day but for what i would do on that phone, the battery life was terrible.
-
Man, never realized i was on that much of an old terrible os
Im updating this week. I never rooted or anything. Never really had the need. Actually didn't know how, or what i would gain. Never researched. Guess I got stuck with stock stuff and learned to deal with it.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Well, if you need any help or anything let me know. The Captivate continues to be my phone of choice out of all the devices I've had. I always end up coming back to it. Matter of fact, I'm using it now. -
Thanks. When I get some time this week ill take you up on that. When I got my phone last April i think, i knew it was a little older, but the omled screen had me sold.

Damn long kernel version
-
It's the same version I have... Although the latest is 3.0.9...
Stupid Samsung...

H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Over the past two days, I've been reading a LOT of posts on G+ and on Twitter about people bricking their E4GT. What's happening?! -
I have no idea. I've read the same thing. And I know I've soft bricked mine 4 or 5 times already using CM9.
Went to bed last night, worked fine. Woke up this morning, everything FCing. Cant do a Titanium backup, cant fix permissions. Not going through getting ALL my stuff back again for the FOURTH time. Screw CM9 for now, back to CM7 until they figure out these bugs. -
Perhaps just an unstable kernel port methinks.

Hello People,
So I will have an Asus TF Prime very soon
(been discussing about this sometime back in the other thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/off-topic/623455-official-tablets-thread-104.html)
Anyway, I'm now looking for the best apps around for the following:
* MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) - At the moment, I used Polaris on my SGS2.. what would be the best app for full functional use of MS Office files? (I don't mind paying for a proven, good app)
* PDF files - is adobe reader the best out there?? I'd prefer a lightweight but fast and good PDF reader... I'll be going through lots of PDF's and I wouldn't want the app to crash or be slow or hang-up or whatever
* Remote desktop - I read about this OnLive Desktop some time back.. more recently I was also pointed to Splashtop Remote desktop (and their HD version)... Any ideas about this?
* VPN Connection - I was suggested Tigervpns VPN client or 5 VPN, as among the best out there.. Is it so? And which one should for among these or is there anything better?
Thanks a lot. Cheers... -
I'm using Quickoffice Pro on my O2X. They have a tablet optimized version, Quickoffice Pro HD, as well. I haven't played around much with remote desktops, but Remote Desktop Client by XTRALOGIC did ok for me (again, not a tablet user). For remote gaming I would check out GameString Adrenaline. And yeah, I'm just using Adobe's PDF reader. I don't read PDF documents much on the go, so I haven't looked for alternatives.
-
With the TF Prime, you won't have to worry about ANY slowdowns
For MS Office, you can try Google Docs, or this one seems nice https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mobisystems.editor.office_registered&hl=pt_PT
Remote Desktop? Teamviewer is amazing IMO.
For PDF, I believe the Adobe Reader is the best. My friend has another option which he claims it's better but I don't remember its name, I'll tell you tomorrow!
You can use Android's build in VPN connection I think, because other than that I don't see any...
-
Alright, thanks for the tips..
Have them bookmarked and will surely check them out once I have my hands on the tablet.
-
Awesomesauce!
Also, TEAMVIEWER, Y U NO INSTALL ON ICS GSII?!
-
Ha.. teamviewer doesn't install on ICS GSII?
Btw, is the ICS on your SGS II the 'official' build? -
It's one the apps which have the "couldn't install on USB storage or SD card" bug...
Well, it's the leaked version, using XXLPB currently, very stable. Liking it more than GB. The official is to be released in a few days/weeks. -
Yeah, even sideloading it doesnt work.
-
What's sideloading?
I've tried to push the app to data/app, it launches just fine, but it crashes when I connect to my PC
-
In the world of Android we're usually talking about installing apps the dev way (USB development) using the Android SDK or software using parts of the SDK like the Android Sideload Wonder Machine.
-
^ What he said, or installing the apk manually with the apk file.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Sideloading = tapping on the apk in a file explorer and installing manually, or adb install xxxx.apk
If you're trying to push to /data/app you will also need to set permissions, just like you would if you're pushing it to /system/app.
If you boot into CWM, just fix permissions from there and delete your caches and reboot.
-
Im stubborn so I'm trying CM9 again, I just cant go back to CM7 now
So far so good
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
ICS really is just that good isn't it?! -
Oh yes it is
Now that CM9 is nearly stable I might try it out in a few days... -
It is
What launchers is everyone on ICS using?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Nova > all. Even Trebuchet. -
Now that the rear camera is working on the D3 I might have to give ICS a go.
I need a larger microsd card, likely due to the recovery system required for my particular Motorola device (safestrap). IIRC it stores the entire stock build on said card, dunno. In any case I don't have that much music or anything on it so that has to be what's taking up the space. -
I find the stock ICS launcher meets my needs well enough actually.
-
Sounds good because thats the one im using
Do it, its worth it. haha
I thought so too... until I changed my DPI. So I switched to Nova. It's very very similar to stock.
