For interested parties... I'll just leave this here.
Meet the ARM Mali-T604 - YouTube -
So my phone started acting up like a week ago, randomly turns itself off. closing the keyboard unless done gently turns itself off (it's an HTC desire Z / G2).
now I'm thinking of getting a new droid phone but I'll try without a keyboard this time.
Do I look at the latest available phones (S2, Droid razr, Nexus) or wait for the quad cores LG and HTC launched a few days ago, I could still live with the phone turning off randomly for now, but if it gets worse then I might reconsider. -
IMO, quad cores will be only used fully in 2013-2014, so getting a dual core phone now is safe. If you are very eager at getting a quad core, the GSIII is supposed to be released in April. It's gonna have 1080p display, 4.8inch and the best SOC out there, the Exynos 5250.
-
Don't get your hopes up. A ceramic body and an almost bezel-less display with 1080p resolution is not very likely. They're just rumors.
-
A man can dream!
-
This is the closest my dreams come to the Galaxy S3:
I should explain - all my dreams include dinosaurs. -
Looks awesome. Cant wait to get a phone with this in it!
-
Reseat the battery. I had an identical issue with a DZ I bought for reselling purposes.
-
^This. I had some random shutdowns about a month or so ago and recalibrating the battery took care of it.
-
Not recalibrating, reseating.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Recalibrate =/= Reseat
Reseating would mean the battery is physically not making complete contact with the contacts in the battery slot... causing shutdowns because the device keeps loosing power. This was very common on a lot of Motorola devices, then they started putting little pads inside the battery bay to sort of wedge the battery in place. I would imagine this HTC has a battery that's not held in place very good?
A battery recalibration would probably mean either your battery has a LOT of wear or you have recently screwed up your battery stats by flashing a new ROM on anything but a 96-100% charge. -
Lol, I thought you wrote resetting.
-
Wasn't that loose when I had a couple of DZs, really is a strange problem though. Took me the longest time to figure out.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I had that issue with several Backflips, Droid X's, and an old Milestone. Motorola made hardware revisions with little pads in the battery bay, and little plastic edges on the battery so when you put the battery down in the phone, it clipped firmly into place. Matter of fact I bent my fingernail back getting a DX battery out once, it was SO tightly wedged in there...
For some reason I've never had that issue with Samsung devices, and theirs are much simpler designs... no padding, no clips, nothing. The contacts push against the battery a bit, and then the cover goes on...
-
Don't even get my started about the Desire HD's battery door.
Frustration Level 99. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
OH, I can imagine. At least most people can remove their battery cover without their phone going insta-dead. lmao. HTC's design quirks, they kill me.
-
What the hell... XD
-
You should try the LG GM360 - makes Motorola's 'clip in' batteries seem loose in comparison.
I once snapped a SIM trying to prise one out.
Don't ask.
Seriously. -
Metamorphical Good computer user
The Inspire 4G's battery is like that. I've never thought of it as that big of an inconvenience.
-
Thanks!, I hope this fixes the weird shutdowns (although closing the keyboard still turns it off if done with a bit force).Johnny T said: ↑Reseat the battery. I had an identical issue with a DZ I bought for reselling purposes.Click to expand...
I also recalibrated the battery (wiped battery stats) and reflashed my rom. -
Hi people,
I guess/know this has probably been discussed a lot before (here/elsewhere), but recently I've seen a rise in the number of people (from different places on the web/download stats of the apps from Android market) opting to have antivirus suites/apps on their Android devices.
Is it really essential to have one? I haven't been using one in my SGS2 since I got it.. and I was wondering if I need to..
If YES, then which is the best suite? I've seen Lookout S&A ( https://market.android.com/details?...result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5sb29rb3V0Il0) to be one of the most popular of them all... ??
Another reason I'm asking is because I'll soon be getting the Asus TF Prime.... and do I need an antivirus/security suite on that?
Thanks in advance. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
ATM, having antivirus on Android is akin to having antivirus on OSX. Not needed at all, IMHO. If you use the Android Market and Amazon App Store for all your apps, then there is a VERY negligible risk of anything fishy happening... and even if it does slip by Google's filters on the Market, once they find it they'll delete it from the Market and your device as a sort of "kill switch".
-
Thanks... that's what I do always - getting apps only from the android market! Anyway..
-
Lookout is nice for the lost/stolen phone function. It's the only reason why I have it on my phone.fonduekid said: ↑

This is the stuff that makes me want to get Windows Phone:
Ice Cream Sandwich Coming to Many Verizon Wireless Smartphones
Seriously? Verizon are you kidding me?! First off, the Rhyme and Dinc2 aren't 4G phones, so there's no excuse that "oh this is only a list of 4G devices...".
Second, where's Stratosphere or Droid Charge? You pimped the latter like no tomorrow last year and are still selling the Stratosphere (just saw an ad for it today) like it's a current device in your lineup. If it's Samsung's fault you should have gotten on them about it and insisted upon a update for YOUR handsets. Period.
No, I'm not upset about not getting an update myself, I rooted and ROM'd ages ago. It's the principle of the thing for people who aren't tech savvy or just want a phone to work. Buying a freaking phone shouldn't have to be a game of russian roulette. You shouldn't have to end up choosing a form factor you hate or a device maker that you don't particularly care for just to ensure you get updates. The average person has no clue about the intracies behind different carriers and manufacturer's track records for updates.
Here's a hint: THERE SHOULDN'T BE ANY TRACK RECORD! Test the updates. Get the updates out. Period. Carriers and manufacturers, you've been in the Android game HOW LONG NOW? This isn't freaking 2008 anymore, get with the program.

it's 5 months since the ICS came out, how many phones have it at the moment? just curious.

Samsung : Galaxy S 2, Galaxy S 2 AT&T, Galaxy S
Sony Ericsson : Xperia Arc S, Xperia Arc, Xperia Neo V (not sure about this one)
HTC : HTC Sensation XL, and others that I don't recall.
As you can see, there are many phones that have it. -
Google's official numbers put ICS at 1.6% of all android devices, meanwhile gingerbread has something like 58%. They don't count unofficial roms like CM or kang but I don't imagine that the amount of people who flash roms based on ICS are going to add much to that... maybe another 1% at most.
The google play launch thing has an additional benefit today, a sale: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...yZWRfYXBwc19DQV99wcm9tb18xMzMxMDU4MzY0ODI1Il0. -

Kang is a term used for a ROM that's been copied, normally without permission.Phistachio said: ↑I've seen the work "kang" quite a lot lately... AOKP... What does it means?Click to expand...
AOKP is the tongue-in-cheek name of a group of Devs. It's based on AOSP.
I'm using their ROM on my Galaxy Nexus. -
New kernel base, new code, new dev base. Manufacturers have to figure out the source, build from it, build the skins... It's not a 5 minute job. Companies have other stuff to do than just dev'ing for us...
And sometimes, companies like Samsung don't want to release/share the source code and kernels, so the development time is further decreased... -
So, for example, if I create PhistachiogenMod 9 (lol), it'll be considered as a kang, since I copied from CM9?Step666 said: ↑Kang is a term used for a ROM that's been copied, normally without permission.

Correct. It's good practice to give credit where credit is due though for those sorts of things. Just copying w/out giving credit is poor form.Phistachio said: ↑So, for example, if I create PhistachiogenMod 9 (lol), it'll be considered as a kang, since I copied from CM9?Click to expand...

On XDA, they insist that CM ROMs that have been compiled by anyone other than the CM Dev team have kang in the name. -

And I agree with that...
Do you know Vertumus? A popular themer on GSII XDA? He actually used another user in order to be famous... I've read that the other user gave him lessons on how to be a great themer and how to theme perfectly and gave him secrets, and now Vertumus calls himself "Master" and didn't give him credit...

Hi attitude may leave something to be desired but that's far from unusual on the internet.
As for not giving credit, if he did all the actual work on the themes in question ( regardless of who taught him how) then he doesn't owe anyone credit. -

Yep, the themes are all his work. They are quite nice actually, he's porting his ICS themes into 4.0.3 so we Sammy guys don't have to use le crappy TW...

Well, you could fork Google's Crespo or Maguro git, and then go from there and then call it whatever you'd like, and there's not anything anyone could say.Phistachio said: ↑So, for example, if I create PhistachiogenMod 9 (lol), it'll be considered as a kang, since I copied from CM9?Click to expand...

By the way, I was just offered 70€ in Amazon credit if I help a guy which I think he soft bricked his phone or something like that... Nevertheless, 70€ for helping someone recovering their phone is awesome

First order of business would be a name change... PhistachiogenMod = so hard to pronounce it makes my teeth hurt. LMAO. But seriously, anyone could do it, you just have to read up on Android's SDK/NDK and Eclipse.Phistachio said: ↑Yeah, I'm totally able to build PhistachiogenMod 9 from Google source code...

Google's source is getting cleaner and cleaner with every revision, so it wouldn't necessarily be too hard.
That's pretty awesome! I know people usually donate around $5-10 for a ROM or kernel, so 70 euro is quite a bit. -
Man, CM9 battery life is horrible on my phone.
And for some reason Im not able to set a Screen Off profile in SetCPU. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Interesting. Exynos kernel devs for your device need to get on the ball. I get about 2 solid days between charges on my Captivate, and about 3 on my Atrix... both with CM9.[>>ahl395<<];8362210 said:Man, CM9 battery life is horrible on my phone.

EDIT: I should also add that both of those are running an overclock, and no undervolt. Captivate = 120% bus OC and the Atrix = 1.45GHz CPU OC and a 33MHz GPU OC. CM9 on the Hummingbird SoC uses the GPU heavily, that's why I went with a bus OC, since that will OC the GPU/RAM/BUS. The Atrix is still using a lot of CPU since the Tegra GPU drivers just aren't ready yet... can't even force 2D rendering yet. -
Damn man, lol. I took mine off the charger at 6AM and it was dead at 6PM today. Though I do need to calibrate it properly again, its horrible. It was the same way with CM7 on my Vibrant.H.A.L. 9000 said: ↑Interesting. Exynos kernel devs for your device need to get on the ball. And about OC/UV. Thats not even available yet in a kernel, neither is any governer other than On Demand.

Verizon has announced ICS update plans...
HTC: ThunderBolt, Droid Incredible 2, Rhyme, Rezound
Motorola: Xoom, Bionic, RAZR/RAZR MAXX, Droid XYBOARD 8.2/10.1, Droid 4
Samsung: Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 7.7
LG: Spectrum

To be fair, that's only a partial list with more supposedly to come. Like all things update related I won't hold my breath.
Besides if the motorola UI on the D3's stock Gingerbread ROM is any indication, it'll likely be crappier than the custom ICS ROM being built for the D3 now.
