Nope. I can't have GB bootloaders on anything but Samsung software. But like I said, mine are early hardware revisions.

Well, finally got ICS loaded, Not sure I like it. Need to get used to it. I had had my phone set up really well with Froyo. Now I need to redo a lot of stuff. Already not liking how swiping left from the locked screen gives me an auto Force Close
Is it just me or does this thing forceclose about every 3-5 sec. Camera, Gallery ect.
-
Ah ok, I thought I read that before
Something must be wrong, thats not normal lol. Wipe and re-flash your ROM. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
What ahl said... wipe and try again. CM9 has had no FC's with me, like at all. None. So if you're having them something is wrong. -
Well this sounds very complete, stable and reassuring...
Samsung and Devs really need to get their acts together and make a better kernel
After seeing what Glitch kernel offers on the Captivate I want that
But again, that one you cant flash anything in CWM either. What the hell? lol
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
After reading that quote, this is what my mind is telling me I read...
-
Hmm, re wiping.
Rebooted, Reinstalled, Still FC every 3-5 sec, any time I access different things. I can't work with this. Rolling back to Stock AT&T Samsung froyo. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Even then, at least go with stock Gingerbread...
-
YEa, thinking I might. It's a pain because every other reboot with ICS just sits at the boot animation and won't progress untill I pull the battery and restart it.
-
LOL, i know
+1
Yeah... you must have gotten a bad download. It happens sometimes , thats why theres MD5 checks. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Well, I outright admit... some phones run custom ROM's fine. Some flat out won't. It's luck of the draw with regards to what your device will run. Yours might be one that just won't do it. I've seen several Captivates like that. -
Ok, I finally got ICS working, but this is a complete change from Froyo. My first instinct is to run and flash back, but that's because I'm un familiar with ICS. I had everything in Froyo the way I wanted so I will give this a week or two. If I can't get the hang of it, we'll see where I go from there
I'm such a n00b when it comes down to messing with these phones, it's like Linux to me
My strong suite is defiantly elsewhere...
Mine took a few reboots, and such before it took, had to wipe everything a few times. Now I can access the gallery and camera with no FCs. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Oh, if you got it working, DEFINITELY give it a chance. It'll impress you. Flash Glitch's kernel and use NSTools and find you a nice LiveOC... ICS is so much more cohesive than previous versions, with the added benefit of being smoother since it's using the GPU in most situations to render UI elements. Gingerbread and earlier used the CPU to render the UI and that just wasn't Hummingbird's strong suit.
EDIT: My homescreen...
And what I really love are ICS's lock screens. Much better...
-
Is there anyway to turn the volume up on the Alarms? Thats one thing I liked about Froyo, had some annoying alarm sounds, ICS seems limited in this. Is there a way to add some more?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
You mean independent volumes? In CM9 they are unlinkable. You can have different volumes for different things...
Or if you want custom alarm tones you can put them into /media/audio/notifications on your SD, then select them in the Settings app in Sounds. Or go into Clock, press the menu key, then Settings... -
It is much different, but its different for the better
Its a huge upgrade, its worth the time getting used to it. I could never go back to anything else now.
-
Hmm, if I could get some of the ring tones to show up as alarm tones I think I'd be happy with that. It looks like it has some of the old tones. Though there are only a few that you can select when choosing an alarm tone. Is there a way around this? Thanks for all you help guys. Definitely appreciate it.
Is there a way to add more desktop screens? I got used to having 7 available.
Once I have all my widgets set where I want them, is there a way to remove it from the application menu? I don't feel it necessary to have all the widgets there, and would like ti to remain just an application menu if at all possible. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
To get different tones in different menus, you'll have to move them between the media folders on your SD. I use the Nokia SMS tone on mine..lol.
For your widget/desktop questions, try Apex Launcher. It separates apps and widgets in the app drawer, still looks like stock ICS, and has a ton of customization options. It's free here...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anddoes.launcher -
Wait, so does that apply to ALL CM9 builds? Or only to the captivate build?
EDIT : derp, that's total BS lol. -
Thanks, definately going to check out Apex launcher when I get off work. You guys are right, ICS is pretty neat.
There is no doubt going to be some growing pains for me, but I think in the end it will be for the better (more customizable).
One thing that is a Win for ICS, is the fact that I can change the default browser button on the home screen. I like using Dolphin HD browser, In Froyo I had to leave the old browser button there even though I didn't use it. I'll have to add some tones to the alarm section.
Going to take some getting used to, but I think I will be happier. Oh and I found there area to change the home screens so that I have 7 total screens.
EDIT: Quick question. After doing this update to ICS, is my phone rooted? And what exactly does it mean to be rooted, and what are the advantages of doing so?
Also, on previous OS versions, it would show when 3G was active, now it shows "H", Does this mean it's on 3G? I can browse the web and such but not really sure what the H is for where it used to say 3G. Sorry if I'm coming off real n00bish, I'm a n00b and trying to do some outside research as these questions come up. Thanks for the patience guys! -
Hey guys, another problem I just noticed on my SGS2
I am not able to see the photos from my google account in the "gallery"? I remember I used to be able to see all the albums in the "gallery" but I am not able to anymore... and yes, I have the sync to my google account active.
Am I missing something here?
-
Couple of things.
What are the advantages of CM9 over competing ROMs?
I know that might sound a bit stupid but I've been using AOKP on my Galaxy Nexus and it's so much nicer than CM7 ever was - I know CM9 will be different due to being based on ICS but I starting to wonder whether it's really any better than other ROMs or if it's just got a better reputation due to it's pedigree.
Secondly, which CWM do people recommend?
The standard one or the touch version? -
IMO, the standard if you have big fingers, and the touch if you have normal sized fingers. I personally will stick with standard, since it's safer for me, so I don't press something accidentally
-
Hmm, I keep getting Gmail stopped working. Can't even open it. Any suggestions?
Disregard. Force closing and clearing data helped. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Yes, you phone is now fully rooted. Look for the Superuser app in your app drawer. You can use any ROOT app now.
3G is a broad term that covers several different standards. The Captivate is HSDPA 7.2Mbps/HSUPA 5.76Mbps capable, so if you're on a custom ROM, it'll show H when you're in an HSPA zone. Slower zones are UMTS, which will show the "3G" symbol. Then you have the slowest... G for GPRS or E for EDGE. Usually in idle mode, your phone will flip between H and 3G, since 3G consumes a bit less power in standby.
What firmware are you running? And have you tried to delete your sync account and re-add it?
CM9 has a better foundation, IMHO. AOSP is pure Google, which is good, but CM takes things like audio differently. Differences: Bluetooth stack, Audio, RIL interfaces, memory settings like MINFREE, UI tweaks, and there are some major framework modifications... for me, if I couldn't have CM, I'd go with AOSP. Otherwise, most every other firmware just grates at my nerves.
Recovery wise, standard all the way. But that's just my stubbornness to change... I don't think a recovery needs touch features and such. It's a recovery. It's supposed to be basic.
Interesting. Has it had an update? Also, which GApps package are you using, the one from ROMManager? -
Thanks for the info! So for browsing is it now running faster then with the stock froyo?
Also, being rooted, does that mean that I can now tether my notebook to my phone and not worry about data usage? Not that I ever do that. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Depends on where you live, and what AT&T market you're in. Some markets are saturated, where others are pretty damn fast even on HSPA. But yes, you don't have any of the AT&T imposed connection speed restrictions anymore.
And yep, if you have unlimited... if you have capped data, beware. Its really easy to go over if you're tethering. But AT&T will no longer have a say in whether you tether or not. Even if you don't have tethering on your plan, you can still share your data with your other devices... Go to Settings --> "More" under Wireless and Networks --> Tethering and Portable Hotspot --> Now here you can choose a network name, security options and a password. Once that's set, just check the little box to enable "Portable WiFi Hotspot" and you're good to go.
-
Have you tried AOKP?
As far as I can tell, it's just AOSP with minimal tweaks.
And they support a decent range of devices too.
Not to mention, Milestone 4 is their 4th stable ICS release - they've also put out 27 intermediate builds too. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Yep. I've tried it, but the one thing I couldn't get past was the audio. It's different than CM, especially on the Galaxy S devices.
EDIT: It was a good ROM though, probably my number 2 choice. -
Yeah, I don't use my phone for music, so I couldn't comment on that side of things.
I have to admit, for a ROM/team I'd never heard of prior to installing, it's been flawless.
And I just upgraded my Tab to ICS thanks to them too.
I guess the reason I was curious was that the AOKP team has produced quite a number of ICS builds before the CM team have officially released anything.
I know that the CM team supports a wider range of devices but, to the best of my knowledge, they're focusing on a smaller range of devices initially. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Thing is, AOKP uses a number of forked CM repos. Even their audio is partially CM forked... just not enough for me to switch.
-
Maybe I will give CM9 a look when they officially release a ROM then.
At least they don't use a pink unicorn for their boot animation

Hey guys,
Its me *again*.. Sorry for any trouble with all my questions.
Well, today the official Android 4.0 upgrade was released by Samsung and I upgraded my SGS2 to the latest firmware/Android 4.0.
Since then, I have noticed the batter does not charge anymore
It's stuck at 28% and only keeps going down, though I see "charging" when I plug in the AC adapter or the USB.
Did I miss anything with regard to any battery calibration or similar?
Please help me with this one.. thanks in advance.
PS., I know there are many other SGS2 specific forums and I have made a post in one of them but for some reason I prefer seeking help from the guys here in NBR... may be it's some kind of trust thats built on, from the time I came on to NBR.
Thanks again and cheers. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Well, IMHO, such an extreme OS upgrade should be done cleanly. Going from Gingerbread to ICS and keeping all your preferences and such intact is like going from XP SP3 to Windows 7. Huge change.
What I would recommend is that you back up your texts and personal data with apps from the market, like "SMS Backup and Restore", and use ODIN to wipe your phone and start fresh. If you need tips on how to do that, or links to what software you need, let me know.
BTW, what firmware version are you running now? XXLP... ? -
Well, I did backup everythign before proceeding with the upgrade (though I didn't do a 'fresh' or 'clean' upgrade)..
This is what I see on the phone:
Android 4.0.3
Baseband Version: I9100XXLPQ
Kernel Version: 3.0.15-I9100XXLPQ-CL223505
Build Number: IML74K.XXLPQ
Latest Firmware: PDA:LPQ / PHONE:LPQ / CSC:LPD (NEE)
Btw, I switched off the phone and put it for charging and now it seems to be charging - though extremely slow (that's what I feel). Now it's up to 61%!! -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Ahh, ok. Helsinki.. Hence the (NEE).
Make sure you have all your stuff, then download this:
Hotfile.com: One click file hosting: I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXXLPD_NEE.zip
You'll want to uninstall Kies on your PC, and install the USB drivers for your phone from here:
Hotfile.com: One click file hosting: SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1_3_2300_0.zip
When you open the firmware ZIP, you'll have files that correspond to certain fields in ODIN. If you want to wait just a bit I'm downloading your firmware now and I'll let you know what files to plug in what fields...
-
Alright, thanks

So what are some must have apps/widgets for ICS? I was trying to find a widget like I had on Froyo. Had the news, weather, schdule, stock all in one widget that took up the whole screen. Is there anything like this from the market? I think it was a stock app on Froyo. Also used to use the buddies app widget, where you could flip through favorite contacts, but with ICS, thats not really needed as you have it in the contacts section.
So I have a few blank homepages that I'd like to fill with some cool widgets...because I'm a nerd, so whats out there? -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
PM'd.
Those widgets you're referring to are TouchWiz widgets. Unless you're using the TouchWiz launcher you can't use or install those widgets. BUT, you can use the launcher on CM9 if you want...
[APP]TouchWiz 4 for ICS (update 29.02.2012) - xda-developers -
Awesome, thanks. I may give it a shot if I have some time.
-
Got it, works really well - especially when used with NFC Quick Actions, which is available free on <s>the Market</s> Google Play.
On a related note, I want my Market back
-
@HAL Thanks for the Nova Launcher info.. it's cool
First time I'm using it and it's great.
Btw, people - those with SGS2 in particular - have you got the ICS update yet? And if yes, how is the battery lasting? I noticed that it drains faster than before! And I'm using the best possible battery saving settings as well as custom power savings, etc... But still I notice it drains faster.
Is it normal for the ICS to consume more battery than the previous Android OS versions (like Gingerbread for ex.)?
Or is it just my battery?
While I'm asking about the battery, I saw on EBay that there is a new battery available (more capacity / charge power) that comes with a new back panel (because of the bigger size of the battery). Is this an official Samsung battery for the SGS2? I did see the pictures / package and it does say Samsung but I was just wondering if Samsung did actually release a new, bigger battery with a new back panel.
If yes, I'm thinking of getting one of those (both for longer battery time as well as a backup battery, just in case).
And finally, is there any specific system monitor app that gives a detailed info of whats eating up the battery? I do have the builtin task manager or battery usage info or I've tried the advanced task killer for ex.. but I'm wondering if there is One best app that gives an info of what's taking up too much battery life or that would tell us which apps could be disabled / turned off or similar?
Thanks in advance..
And Android is cool
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I really want to get into NFC...
Could be actually draining the battery more. The Quadrant score for the GS2 went up with ICS, so there's probably more performance being eeked out of it. ICS is heavily dependent on the GPU, so they've probably got it running full tilt.
Not normal, no. On my Captivate it's actually MUCH improved. Samsung Gingerbread was always frugal on the OG Galaxy S, but CM9 is probably on the same level. I get about a day and some change out of one charge, and that's being USED. Twitter, Gmail, push notifications enabled, music...
About the bigger battery, IDK? They might have.
You should have battery stats in your Settings. Settings --> Battery. There it should tell you what all has been eating your battery. Should be something similar to this, even though Samsung has probably dressed it down a bit...
-
Yes, I do have those same battery stats show up.
Well, in my case, I do have GMail / Google Sync / push notifications / weather update every 6 hours etc., enabled (have always been, even before..) and some music and I play Wordfeud these days through wi-fi / 3G network..
I get around a day and half with the battery (but before, I used to get at least 3 days (100% to 10%) with the same usage pattern and settings). Hence, my wondering....
I want to check up on the bigger battery and see if its for real (from Samsung I mean).. I just couldn't find any reliable info anywhere else about this battery. I'll get back if I do get any info.
Thanks.
