True! But as HAL said, and now I agree with him, CM9 is much better for performance than AOKP. So now, there's no reason to not get CM9 ;)

I might try CM9 again to see if they've got the wifi issues fixed. I doubt it though as I've had wi-fi dropouts on every ICS ROM I've tried.

I might have to switch to gingerbread...D:

I liked CM7, but when I last tried CM9, it wasn't as good as AOKP. Maybe the next time I flash my phone, I'll try it.

it occurs at random, at any time, on any wi-fi network. It comes back on its own but if I'm doing something when it drops it obviously becomes annoying.

:p true, esp because of how "semi-custom" ROM's work on Moto devices, as HAL explained earlier....

The good news is that the D3 is on the ICS upgrade list, albeit in the tenuous "planning" stage.

With my luck it'll end up like the Cliq 2, which is just getting Gingerbread after on again and off again promises by Moto. By that point I'll likely be looking for a new phone lol.

Mostly it's the devices with limited resources where stock CM9 makes the biggest difference. All the different boot scripts and memory tweaks tend to get screwy over time... at least in my experience.

What's your WiFi Sleep Policy set to?

It's set to always on. The dropouts occur as I'm actively using the phone. At least that's when I notice them, wouldn't surprise me if it does it while its just sitting around unused as well.

Just switched to CM9 (stock CM9 Kernel) on my Gnex from AOKP w/franco kernel. Gotta say that i'm really loving it so far with only losing ~1% per hour while idle instead of 3-5% per hour battery life no matter which nightly/milestone i was on. I have to ask though, is there a way to disable the boot animation of CM9 like there was with AOKP? the bright blue is really well...bright and annoying when i restart my phone.

And this is where my handset is currently:

It's nothing special in the flesh and any flagship handset launched in 2012 without ICS most certainly does not have amazing support.

Well my evo shift has finally kicked the bucket. Well sorta. So now I face the problem of getting a new phone on sprint and well their offering of android phones with keyboards is terrible. Its between the Motorola XPRT, admiral and the samsung epic.

First off I bought an epic when they first came out in 2010 and Ill have to say I wasnt terribly impressed and add in the fact that they are fading it out being a nearly 2 year old phone. But its the best phone to suit my needs. The admiral gets bad battery life, has a terrible network and the thumboard/treo style doesnt work well with alot of apps. So now Im stuck between a rock and a hard place do I grab one of these phones, have them order a back-ordered evo shift that is showing age too or wait and hope for something to come down the pipe(did some searching and see nothing). Either way Im either getting an old phone thats outdated and wont fully suit my needs or stick with a broken phone.

    OR

Leave sprint and get a droid 4 on verizon. I promised myself I wouldnt leave my beloved sprint for a phone, but the droid 4 is literally the perfect phone for me. Sadly no unlimited data (HUGE issue for me) and Ill be paying 3-4 times as much a month by switching to verizon.

Thanks for the heads up. Yeah I have tried quite a few even borrowed my brothers evo 3d and I just cant get into the virtual keyboards. Plus I do alot of terminal on my phone and using the virtual would make things a major PITA.

Well, sooner or later you're going to have to just live with them. Hardware keyboards are going the way of the dodo. And, IMO, for good reason. They add a LOT of un-needed complexity to the design of the device, with a lot more room for failure. Devices with hardware keyboards just aren't as robust as devices without.

As far as options on verizon and sprint goes, what's wrong with your evo shift? is it a physical issue or a software one (that you might be able to fix via a ROM)?

If you liked your epic on sprint, youll love the Samsung Stratosphere on verizon. Be warned that it'll never get ICS though and its looking grim on the custom ROM side too.

The closest thing to the Shift on Verizon is the HTC Merge. look for it on eBay and in Verizon "indirect" stores. Great keyboard, good design, just dont expect stuff like ICS because it didnt get a proper launch (I've ranted about how Verizon/HTC treated this phone way too many times...i'll spare everyone...)

as a fellow hardware keyboard guy, i too kinda feel the pinch. ;(

say that to my Treo 700w...it still looks and feels near new. :p

my OG droid also remained solid up until the end, keyboard pulling apart nonwithstanding.

I dont know my evo shift has taken alot of falls before it finally "died" and by die I mean 1/3 of the screen is goofy. 1.5 years of hard abuse and its been great. I dont understand why people prefer those terrible virtual keyboards to a physical one. I played with my moms new iphone and my brothers evo 3d and while they are better then most they are still terrible.

But I do see the trend you stated and I understand its the way of of things now. I looked to see what was coming down the pipe and nothing but dumb phones and very low end android devices have physical keyboards these days. Ill be going back to my sprint store and Ill download my apps to some of the phones and see how they work and make a decision as I NEED a new phone ASAP.

    I've been 404'd.

Kinda like being Rick Rolled, only without the fantastic music.

On a sidenote, I got to briefly use a BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha today. Compared to Android and iOS on phones, BB10 looks like some beautifully futuristic OS. Smooth as glass and FAST. I didn't think I'd ever say anything bad about ICS's UI ethos, but it looks tired next to BB10. :( iOS is laughable next to it.

Well, that device in particular won't reach the market, but that OS WILL. My Playbook is running it now, and I'll admit... it's pretty damn nice. Especially since the last update. The 2.0 update came out and it had a few bugs. Then 2.0.1 came and I've not had a single issue whatsoever, which means they finally understand memory management.

I, personally, would like to hear it... :)

As long as you're not trollin' it up, I don't think the mods or anyone would mind you posting here.

They're about to launch the all-but-identical Xperia Ion in the US in June and it's just running an S3 SoC - ditto for the Xperia S.
So why would this one model of handset get such a bump in specs?

Sony are, as Sony Ericsson were before, continually behind the curve.
I'd be surprised if they moved past S3 this year.

As for Blackberry, the comparison between BB10 and WebOS that, I think, BGR made ( or maybe Engadget, I can't remember) is somewhat portentous IMO.

I wouldn;t hold my breath personally.

The Sony reps are doing exactly what they were doing last year and trying to prove that the superior hardware their competitors are using is unnecessary.
It's a company with zero vision.

I would be surprised if Samsung were using superior hardware for Tizen.
I mean, I know the theory is that they want an alternative to Android just in case but look what happened to Bada.

On a semi-related note, I personally found it rather ironic that the Developer devices for an OS being spear-headed by Intel run on ARM SoCs.
I know the OS is designed to run on both but still.

And just in case people missed my last ninja-edit, I'll post this again:
As for Blackberry, the comparison between BB10 and WebOS that, I think, BGR made ( or maybe Engadget, I can't remember) is somewhat portentous IMO.

Ironic, yes. But not unheard of. Microsoft's order from Apple of XBOX 360 dev units was massive.

All Intel needs to do is develop their source for X86. That's it. If they can prove that they can deliver strong up-to-date source for their platform ON-TIME... they might attract a few OEM's.

And yes, that was an interesting read. But you're right... there's a lot wrong with that article.

That said, I feel that for all the advantages RIM have compared to where Palm were, I can't see them reversing the trend.

I still think that it's a fight between BBOS and WP as to which folds first.
And I don't see RIM beating MS in that fight.

    Nice! Quite a nice price!

What are the steps to root? The GSII is damn easy to root too, takes around 15 secs to do the whole rooting procedure... (Flashing CF root is all it takes, unlocked bootloader ftw )

All you have to do is start up this program, and click Flash Custom ROM. No need to even root because it just gets around everything, and immediately puts CWM on and you can flash a ROM from there :D
