sorry for being a noob, but what's so good about webOS compared to IOS and android?
-
You can develop proprietary phone applications using only simple web scripts..

For me it's not really about the mainstream traction. It's about the platform itself. I want it to keep going because it's an incredible OS. From kernel to UI, it's every bit as powerful as iOS and Android, while still being open and easy to code for.
Samsung devices aren't too hard to get apart... just really tightly clipped plastic around a magnesium frame.
See above and below...
That.
HTML, CSS and Javascript are all you really need to know to make a WebOS app. Dead simple. -
Well with ICS the multitasking has gotten similar to that of the card system. I would however love to see webos on a nice device like this as I think that was one of the issues with the OS was that they only put it on cheap low end devices. Sad cause my treo 600, 650, and 700 were solid phones.
Too bad HP did what they always do and buy up tech and kill it. Makes me hate them even more for killing my beloved palm.
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk -
ICS is still isn't as good as WebOS with cards. Stacks are a big missing feature as is the wave launcher (though you can get similar functionality on the market). It just works better on webOS because it feels like the entire OS was designed around multitasking.
Compared to webOS, the Android multitasking system feels a bit more chaotic. The list feels uber long, the previews are smaller, and you can't reorder or stack things. -
I dont know have you seen sense 4's take on multitasking? Even stock ICS it feels identical as you press one button and swipe away apps you dont need. Messing around on the galaxy nexus alot at the store and the feel is android with webOS card IMHO. But then again I never had 2.0 as my pre bricked before I could get it. But still I think ICS multitasks as well as webos but still isnt as easy to develop for as webos was. Now pre ICS/sense 4 multitasking on android was well meh at best. But all that will be moot thursday morning as thats when I pick up my new phone.
As for OS vs OS well I think had webos had 1/4 the attention and funds that android had it would be the premier mobile OS. Granted palm either needed to expand to more then just their phones or put out an array of phones for everyone. But palm didnt do that, instead they spit in the faces of all of us old palm users in the attempt to compete with apple (which is never a good idea as they have a cult following) cutting out things like accessories and such. I used to leave my laptop home alot on the go back in the day cause all I needed was my palm device with the external (non BT) keyboard and I had everything I needed for short computing sessions.
All in all I havent been sadder to see a company go then I was when palm went the way of the dodo. But at least android has evolved into something similar so that I wont miss the awesome functionality and multitasking performance. -
WebOS multitasking blows away ICS's multitasking. There is no comparison. Its not just about the interface to the running apps (although that is indeed a big part), but also how the system sandbox's those apps, and how the apps themselves use the multitasking capabilities. Its stuff like having the email client make a new card for a new email that shows what webOS can do with multiple apps.
(Disclaimer: I at one point in the past was an intern on the Framework, Tools, and SDK team @ Palm working on some Enyo/Node.js stuff.) -
Finally rooted my Wildfire S. No more low memory problems
-
I think Sense 4 makes it worse. The previews are bigger, but you see only 1 preview at a time. Granted, that was the same with webOS, but at least webOS had stacks that lumped related cards together. Plus, with Android, it feels like almost everything gets a card. Voice search, Google search will all show up with their own preview. It makes the recent apps list a little long. And again, webOS wave launcher is awesome.

HTC One X and Evo 4G LTE indefinitely delayed at US Customs for investigation of Apple patent infringement | The Verge -
I dont know I didnt mess too much with webos 2.0 and on, but I can say I preferred the original webos card system and its similar to ICS stock and sense, albeit slightly different views/swipes.
Honestly I find the gnexus to multitask like my old pre did and thats what made me fall in love with it. The only issue Im worried about is the radio performance, although I hear with 4.0.4 that its much better.
Yeah I was wondering why people were crying about the new evo getting delayed and now I know. Starting to wonder why google isnt going to bat for some of these companies getting sued for terrible reasons. But now I feel a tiny bit better about getting a gnexus over trying to fight a mob for the new evo... -

Apple. All they care is their patents. They are ruining the freedom of the market and freedom of new inventions with their damn patents. I wholeheartedly hate them.
"Tapping on phone number for a menu of options". That's basic and already available with Skype on desktops. Why don't they sue Skype too? -
Windows Phone Classic has had this for years. Ditto Palm. It's kinda shocking how Apple manages to get away with this...
oh wait: judges are people too, as a whole notoriously not necessarly the most tech savvy, plus Apple's seen as a great company who "invents things first" among the not so tech savvy.
Put 2 and 2 together along with slick talking lawyers from Apple and you end up with stuff like this along with the infamous Galaxy Tab 10.1 case where Apple likely manipulated the Samsung press images among other things to convince a jury and judge that Samsung ripped off Apple. -
That pretty much only shows how weak and scared Apple is. Instead of competing and creating something new and better, they go with the best lowblows.

LOL. I've had that issue once or twice. Watch it go back up though. It's like charging but without the pesky cord.

Yeah buying patents in order to sue is pretty lame imho. Just shows more of that crApple mentality...

Hahaha yeah it went up to 13% after a little bit, then back down

The sad irony is...unless Dell shocks me with a new Latitude redesign, I'm 70% sure I'm buying a MacBook Pro! (ok so a used April 2010 i5 15...but still)
its a company I hate to love but love to hate. -
But unfortunately, the average Joe will think that Apple invented the Universe and Android is just a bunch of untrained linux monkies that only copy/paste apple's work because of these lawsuits.

IMHO, the best is the Galaxy Tab 7.7 or the Asus Transformer Prime. Both are the best of their size category. The Tab 7.7 has a 7.7" HD S-AMOLED+ screen that's just amazing with Exynos and a battery life that's nearly 13 hours. The Transformer Prime has a 10.1" S-IPS LCD and if you need extreme battery life you can use the keyboard dock. -
Apparently these:
can now be had for a song on eBay...
To say i'm not tempted (especially since I've learned that you can flash the Us Cellular gingerbread upgrade (as expected, Verizon's continued to pretend this phone doesnt exist, including not upgrading it from 2.2) on it without any repercussions) would be a massive lie. -
Ok, this is really bugging me - I can't see the mistakes/typos you're talking about.
Put me out of my misery.
If LG do pull this off, they've got to produce a GSM version too - it would be a waste a phone with those specs only being available on Sprint... -
Ooohh, I like. A lot. LG's stepping things up a bit it seems.
-
Yes and no.
Before any info about this handset came to light, even just as rumours, BGR had 'exclusive inside information' on an HTC device that will launch on Verizon in the near future that has a quad-core Krait CPU, LTE and a ~5" 1080HD screen.
That would be stepping things up. -
Well, stepping things up for LG...not necessairly everyone.
-
Even just sorting out their firmware updates would be a step up for LG...
The Optimus 2X was the first dual-core phone ever and looks like it'll be the last one to get ICS. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Well, they left off HD on the Galaxy Nexus's display section because it's just a smaller version of what's on the GSIII, but that's just nitpicking. The HTC One X doesn't have an IPS screen, it's just SLCD2 that's optically bonded. The GSIII doesn't have 4212, it's 4412 AKA Exynos 4 Quad. All three of them carry A/B/G/N WiFi... 5/2.4GHz.
That's about all I see ATM.
-
You know when you're a phone nerd when.....
Seriously though, we're all likely the "Car Bores" of phones. XD -
Gee, thanks Motorola....: http://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c
the thing's newer than the Bionic and is basically the same phone, yet it gets shafted.
I will gladly give up the keyboard for a HTC or Samsung. I'm done with Motorola.
Edit: And/Or verizon. Seriously, since i dont know who's fault it is (the incredible 2 and Rhyme's getting ICS so its not a "lets leave 3g behind" thing) I'm done with both of you. I'll save up and go unlocked/carrier branded and go on a GSM MVNO like service like that sweet deal that T-mo has with Wal-Mart or something. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I kind of figured they'd do that.
Also, you can see it's likely the carrier that is behind it. Look at the Atrix 4G and Droid X2. It's basically the exact same phone save for the X2 has less RAM. Yet the Atrix gets ICS and the X2 remains on Gingerbread. Also, the D3/D4... all that's different is LTE and the D4 has more RAM.
If RAM is the determining factor in updates, BLUR IS TOO DAMN BLOATED. That goes for Samsung and TouchWiz, Motorola and Blur, and HTC and Sense. All of them are bloated crap. -
Yay CyanogenMod!
-
I forgot about the D4 to be honest, but your right theyre largely the same.
That's what I'm thinking. The irony is, freakin Blur on ICS appears to be what many people say they want from manufacturers all along, at least visually: A stock experience with manufacturer specific apps and widgets.
At least that's what I gathered from the leak for the RAZR....
Sure, IF everything works on your phone's build of various custom ROM's. On the Droid 3, there's graphics acceleration issues, camera issues, and wi-fi issues, the latter seemingly affecting only a subset of D3 users.
All of the bugs manage to be in every ICS rom I've tried including both AOKP and CM9, and as such I'm back on Gingerbread. It's not for the devs lack of trying to address them, anything but actually: they're very hard working people, but Motorola at least could have likely helped if they released ICS for the D3.
Hell they could have helped by actually unlocking the bootloaders like they promised but we all know how that hasnt happened except for one specific "new" phone released in IIRC a handful of countries. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Motorola's Blur on ICS won't be all that different than Blur on GB.
Those were early alphas where most of the Blur UI wasn't included. They build up from stock to whatever they ship.
All of the issues you've listed are because you can't change the kernel. On ICS all that has changed to such an extent that none of the ICS libs will work correctly with Gingerbread's 2.6.35 kernel/modules. ICS requires a 3.0 kernel, and accompanying system libs. ICS on a GB kernel will have a pretty good bit of graphical glitches, simply because that is the one part of Android that has almost completely changed from GB.
On the Atrix we're using Xoom sources for the Tegra 2 GPU drivers, since our bootloader is unlocked we can build that into Moto's kernel source. It's ugly, code wise, but it mostly works. -
Finally rooted my Vibrant. It has been a long time
-
My stepmom has a Fascinate (she replaced it with the iphone 4s) that miggghht be defective (even when reset she complains it slowed down, and i can corroborate her) and i might see about seeing whether it's just an app she installed or if its truly a bug in the hardware.
If its the former I'm tempted to try ICS on it, just to see how it compares... -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
ICS on the Galaxy S hardware is a delight... even at the stock 1GHz. ICS uses the GPU more than the CPU and the Galaxy S has a beastly GPU for it's generation.
You should try it! It'll at least show you what ICS is supposed to be like, since you'd be loading the stock ICS OS and a AOSP source built 3.0.x kernel.
The Galaxy S's ICS builds are basically Nexus S builds. The only thing different between the two are the libs for the camera (which are now completely custom written by the CM team) and the RIL.
-
I was tempted by Straight Talk ($45 for unlimited everything, bring your own phone), especially after reading that I can no longer keep unlimited data and get subsidized pricing once shared data comes out... But LTE is just too good.
-
I see what you mean, if i had lte i'd be really torn.
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/androidcentral/~3/h5Ql0xq8ifw/story01.htm
Motorola, you cant quit while your ahead can you? And youve pretty much confirmed it's your fault now so I will never own another handset of yours as long as i live. Period. -
@Phistachio, did you bother checking out the S Voice app that got ported over to the SGSII from the SGSIII firmware dump ? Here. Works brilliantly well for me on CM9!
-
Have you guys tried out FoxFi? Can't seem to get it to work with the Moto XPRT (unrooted).
