Aww, that's too bad. Appreciate the help from both of you.
-
Yep, you beat me to it haha. I looked at videos and sure enough...no flash :/
-
Actually, I just checked Ebay listings for the Verizon version which has flash and it's only 10-20$ more expensive as a refurbished and some of the listings offer Square Trade, so I think I will go with that just to get flash, because it's quite an important feature for me, so you bringing it up was a good thing
Apparently unlock codes are stored on this model, and there's tutorials showing how to properly unlock it too.
Now I can rest my mind knowing that I have found (thanks to you guys) a well priced Android device with every single feature that I desire in it. -
Anybody see the recent touch screen patents granted to Apple? This doesn't look good at all for Android.

Remember that the Verizon model is CDMA only! No GSM/HSPA. -
This. And you'd have to make absolutely sure that Telus would accept a "unbranded/non telus branded" CDMA device on their network.
In the US, Sprint and Verizon won't let you activate a device from the other carrier (ex: a sprint device on vzw and vice versa) unless you're super lucky enough to talk to the right person/pull loads of strings. Even THAT isn't as guarenteed as it used to be.
I wanted the Treo 800w:
but it was a sprint exclusive. Shame as it was what the 700w should have been, although most of that device's foibles were rectified in the Treo 700wx.
I can't recall if Treo Pro was higher spec'd though off the top of my head -
Tinderbox (UK) BAKED BEAN KING
A lot of e-reader use infra-red instead of capacitance, if they can get the size and accuracy down, you don't actually have to touch the screen as you are just breaking beams, also no special pens or problems with gloves or use underwater/maybe.
I just bought a galaxy beam and i am loving the projector.
John.

Telus' 3G network is not CDMA, so the Verizon version won't work. I'd just go with the $149 Nexus S, with the Jelly Bean update rolling out and all. Which plan are you on atm with Telus?
-
Ah, ok. Each time I find something I'm ready to purchase there's a new obstacle LOL! Currently with Koodo (a Telus subsidiary), but was going to switch to Speakout (Rogers AT&T network) due to unlimited data.
I looked up the AT&T Galaxy S (SGH-I897), but it's just like the Telus version it has no camera flash (lame that Verizon is the only carrier with camera flash!), so a refurb Nexus S for 149$ with a square trade warranty, JB upgrade and 720p camera fix mentioned by HAL will be the way to go.
There's two different Nexus' available so I'll make sure to choose the one that works on Rogers. Thanks everyone.
Edit:
Perfect! Under 200$ total:
1. Nexus S (mint refurb condition)
2. 2-year Warranty (square trade)
3. 2-day UPS from California to Ontario -
Yeah, AT&T/Rogers/Telus/Bell compatible Nexus S is the main one, the other version is T-mobile (US)/Wind/Mobilicity which uses AWS bands. I recently switched to the Telus $65/mo 6GB data plan. How much is that unlimited one?
-
Doesnt Telus have both CDMA 3G and GSM? They're in the midst of a changeover no?
-
Just flashed a pre-release of cm10 jelly bean on my att galaxy s2. Runs really nicely for a preview
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2 -
Likewise. Flashed and now running JB (CM10 pre-release) on my SGS2.
Working pretty sweet so far too!!
-
Speakout, which uses Rogers-AT&T towers @ 35$:
- 400 Canada-Wide Minutes (promotion; up from 200)
- Unlimited text CAN-US
- Unlimited Data (throttled after 5 or 10GB, can't remember)
- Caller ID | Voicemail | Call Waiting | 3-Way Calling
There's some configuration you have to do with proxydroid first, but once you've done that, browsing will work flawlessly and nearly all apps work without issues.
Wind Mobile is another unlimited one @ 40$/mo, but you get:
- Unlimited Canada-Wide calling
- Unlimited Text/picture CAN-only (US text is an addon)
- Unlimited data out of the box with no proxydroid/setup required
- Throttling once 5GB is reached, unless you pay 10$ to make throttling past 10GB
- Features are the same as speakout
Downside with Wind is it is only good in certain parts of Canada with limited coverage. Works perfectly where in my region, I had a phone with them last year. My classes switched to the basement of my university, where I had no signal for most of the day, so I had to switch to the 'big 3' temporarily.
---
I used to be on a 60$+ Fido plan and then switched to Telus, but just couldn't warrant the cost of a 70$+ after tax/fees phone bill every month. -
No, they have been on GSM for a few years now. Bell and Telus had a joint venture for GSM 3G, so they can get the iPhone on their network to rival rogers. Forget about Canadian CDMA altogether unless you are going to be using a dumbphone.
-
Can you tell what's working and what's not working?
-
The WifiKill app is pretty cool.
-
Since not much has changed from ICS -> JB, it's just as stable as CM9 was upon initial alpha launch, probably more. I haven't noticed any FCs thus far. It's only been a day, so I haven't gotten around to test much of anything. USB Mass Storage is not working. Everything else seems as good as CM9. Some features of CM9 are missing, as they still need to be ported onto the JB base. Voodoo LOUDER is not working. Besides that, I see no reason now to use CM9 over CM10. It's essentially the same as far as core functionality goes, only just with Android 4.1.1.
-
Thanks for the tip. I read up on frequencies after you posted and CDMA sounds like a headache to unlock with all the flashing you have to do and it's not even guaranteed to work - way too risky to purchase a CDMA phone for a foreign carrier.
---
Also found the HTC myTouch 4G (ebay) @ 190$ (new and refurbs)< 5mp-flash/720p/3.8"/1GHz/768ram/front VGA cam which is another great priced/budget smartphone (T-Mobile). Reviews give it an equal score to the Nexus S if anyone is shopping in the same price range as me. Both of these phones are the "winners" for GSM phones under 200$ after hours of researching lol. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
The graphics frameworks have had another pretty big change. But the ICS drivers can be adapted to work fine. Mainly triple buffering and VSync with OpenGL ES 2.0. -
I switched back to CM9 on my i777. It was a pre-release build and leterally none of the sensors worked (no auto screen rotate is the first one I noticed). I'm leaving town for a week on saturday and will be without internet the whole time, so hopefully they get nightlies going by the time i get back.
-
Yeah, sensors on my phone didn't work either on the first build of CM10. The developers just released a the second preview that claims to have fixed that issue and make it all around smoother. Installing now. I will report back after some use on how good it is.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
My builds have had working sensors. ? Maybe they made some changes in source that weren't compiled in the previews?
Anyways, they had to pull the original builds of CM10 for the i777 and the i9100. They didn't realize that the eMMC wipe issue wasn't being properly disabled. -
Really? I haven't heard anything bad about the wipe issue on my note. I've done a full wipe every time. Also, my only complaint is that for some reason right when I lock my phone it will wake back up for a split second. Its only happened since I flashed cm10 so I guess its that. Any ideas? Also my sensors work in this new preview. Except if I tilt my device to the right in orientates to the left haha.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I think it was only the i9100 and i777... virtually identical except for a different microphone structure on the i777 and the capacitive touch keys instead of a home button. The N7000 has quite a few source/hardware differences, plus the NAND firmware version is what's killing the i777/i9100. The N7000 may have a different firmware revision.
Meanwhile, SE has said that the Arc S (SE's top of the line phone just last year) will not be getting Jellybean. -
No CM10 for my phone yet
. Not that I would switch unless it was fully working (at least almost), but still
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
ET4G is an amalgamation of several different Samsung phones. lol. It's just a matter of time before someone adds all the pieces up and makes them work together.
You have CM9, no? -
My Razr Maxx came in today. Unfortunately, it didn't come with a sim card, so I couldn't activate it. I randomly tried sticking my T-Mobile micro sim in it, and that did the trick!
-
Yeah thank god, otherwise I'd sell the phone and get something different
CM9 is pretty good on it though, fully working. Some nice AOKP Roms too, but i still want Jelly Bean
-
Samsung Captivate here, I'm having some problems.
My phone has been freezing and crashing apps more than usual. I'm kind of getting tired of it as sometimes I rely on the GPS for my job. I think the last straw for me was when it could just NOT want to transfer music from my PC, in fact, my computer started having problems with it and wanted to Scan and Fix it. Anyone want to help out?
It's updated to Android 2.3.3, btw. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
If it's Samsung software, there's your problem. The Captivate only has 339MB of usable RAM and TouchWiz will eat that up with nothing running. Eventually it'll cause problems.
Also, if you were on Froyo and updated to Gingerbread without doing a data wipe, there's another big source of problems. Android 4.0 is the first Android OS that updates cleanly to newer versions. Past versions were horribly messy. -
So do a full wipe of my phone? Alright, I'll see how that goes.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Make sure to back your stuff up!! Like texts and call logs and such. A full wipe won't touch your SD card contents (internal or external). Only ODIN can do a master wipe. -
In-case anyone missed it, I posted a coupon code for -75% off Xtreme Guard screen and body protectors in the deals sub-forum - you have to buy two to get the deal.
I picked up two full bodies protectors for 5$ - steal price. I should of bought four now that I think of it, since I like to replace them every few months due to wear. -
Can anyone recommend a nice music player that has the option to not display album artwork, at least when browsing? I really dislike album artwork, and usually strip it from all of the tracks in my music library. Thanks in advance.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
MIUI Music Player. You can disable all album art in the settings.
[APP][OFFICAL][4.0+][ARM v7] MIUI Music v4 - xda-developers
That only works on ICS and newer though. :/ -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Ok...
Those of you that have a Galaxy S2 i777 from AT&T, I'm compiling CM10 daily for those of you interested.
Link to today's nightly... cm-10-20120730-UNOFFICIAL-i777.zip
If you i9100 folks would like nightlies as well, let me know. -
Me, me, me! I would like a CM10 nightly
Are your patches the same as describe here? BBQLog - CyanogenMod Changelog -
Are you compiling with the standard CM10 kernel in place?
-
Make me one for my SGSII Epic 4G Touch
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Actually, I'm working off of TeamHacksung's fork of CM10.
I am indeed.
I don't have that source tree. :/ -
Oh, so you're giving us an official build in an unofficial manner?
I'll be using it as 2nd ROM, will use it as 1st ROM as soon as it matures up to officil nightlies. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Yes. It's official CM10 for the i9100/i777, but I'm compiling the ROM and the kernel from TeamHacksung/CyanogenMod source. Kang'ing it, in other words... since there aren't nightlies going anywhere yet.
If someone with an i9100 could get me a zip of the proprietary files I can compile you a nightly. OR, if you'd like I can walk you through getting your own build environment setup so you can kang away!
-
Ah, I see! What files do you need?
I kind of know how to set up a build environment (ubuntu, Android SDK, etc), but the problem is I don't have the time to wait for it to build... I do have the resources though. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Eh, actually I just looked at the dependency list and it'd probably be easier for you to build it. lol.
Here's the instructions for anyone who wants them!
(I literally HATE how this forum auto-formats things like links and things INSIDE "Code:" fields. That shouldn't be touched by any type of auto formatting!) [URL="http://pastebin.com/EPbEtUjC"]Instructions![/URL]
-
Do you guys prefer Ubuntu for compiling? I tend to use Fedora... Wondering if I'm missing out on anything!
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I've always used Ubuntu. It's just the default for any Android compiling. lol.
I used to use Fedora as a desktop OS though. Never did any compiling on it. -
And how does it work better exactly? I'll switch soon if it's worth it...
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
It's just the added advantage that since everyone either uses Ubuntu or OSX to compile Android, there's a wealth of information out there should things go wrong.
Plus I've just gotten used to Ubuntu's quirks...
-
Hmmm... Precisely what I thought. Guess I'll be switching after all!
