That sharp drop looks like a freeze up and reboot. Usually when Android hangs up, it causes some severe battery drain.
-
I noticed this on the OG droid...it would lockup when oc'd and pushed hard....freeze...and then random reboot. After it rebooted..bam...battery was easily dropped down...it was strange.

Aside from the pedantic point that Sony Ericsson don't exist any more, they were never that competitive prise-wise in the UK.
The late-2012 Sony models seem to be priced a little more sensibly but even the likes of the Xperia S was a joke, trying to charge the same sort of money as the S3 etc when it pales in comparison. -
I'll keep an eye out for that I'm still a newbie to android phones......
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Yep... 'tis a habit. To me they're still SE. lol.
But Sony's handsets here in the US are very competitively priced, last time I looked. The Xperia Arco S, brand new and unlocked, is on $459. -
I wish they have some good Xperia phones for the Verizon network. But i haven't checked lately though... :\ i have another 6 month on the contract to go before i get a new phone
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
No OEM really wants to make CDMA phones anymore. It's an old and antiquated standard... and Sony doesn't have the time to waste on it. -
it's actually the 4G LTE type on the Verizon network and i've seen over 43 Mbps download on my Verizon phone!
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Yes, but that LTE radio has to be paired with a CDMA radio as well for voice. Verizon hasn't flipped the switch on VoLTE until their rollout is at least 80% complete. -

Ordered my 16 GB Nexus 4 today...hope it ships soon. :|

let us know how you like it when you get it. I've been thinking about getting one myself.
-
Yay! I can finally come on this thread since I'm going to retire my iPhone 3GS for my new Samsung Galaxy SIII LTE Titanium! Being an Android newbie what do you guys recommend that is worth having on the phone?
-
Welcome back Hearst! You haven't posted in a while (I haven't seen at least!)
Would you like to have a stock phone (AKA TouchWiz UX, Samsung SW), or would you like AOSP (Android Open Source Project) software like CM10 (CyanogenMod 10)?
Besides that, I recommend you to browse the Play Market and just download whatever you desire! -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Case/screen protector.
Definitely get it rooted and install Clockwek Recovery mod so you can flash with ease. Also easy to get anything flashed being a Samsung phone, Odin is godlike. Once it is rooted, Titanium Backup first thing. Worth the 7 bucks for the pro version. -
I'd actually argue for the Samsung stock ROM + a launcher (Apex Launcher is my personal favorite), since there's a lot of nice features in the stock TouchWiz experience that aren't in stock Android JB (camera features, some useful motions, etc).
A case would be nice too. I personally use the Incipio NGP for the GS3. -
Thank you Phistachio, it's nice to see you back too. What's the difference between Stock vs AOSP? Does it improve battery life, add features? The thing is I'm slowly getting to grips with Android given that iOS had stunted my knowledge on phones. Plus I don't really want to brick the thing as I only just got it!
Definitely getting that, I got butter fingers though my iPhone 3GS is still immaculate amazingly... thanks to the toughcase I bought for it. (T___T)
Rooted? Oh man I'm about to cry, what's the benefit of a rooted phone? I feel like a noob...
Thanks for the suggestions MidnightSun. I guess there's a ton of things I could do with this phone, I only just got used to errr... putting apps on the main screen - yeah. I have a look on the case though so thanks for that. -
Stock is pretty much what you have on your phone right now, which is Samsung TouchWiz Nature UX UI. Stock software. Now, AOSP is Stock Android, Android as it's supposed to be.

That is CM10. It may improve battery life, not sure how it is on the S3, but it did on my S2. In terms of features, it's a 50/50. You lose the Samsung apps that you may like, but you gain real Android-looking apps like Phone dialer and all. I recommend you to read around the XDA forum of your exact. I9305 LTE GSIII : Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Q&A - xda-developers and Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Android Development - xda-developers
FYI, it's almost impossible to fully brick a Samsung device. The only way to really brick it (and even then it's still recoverable) is to flash a ROM that's not meant for the device, like flashing a S3 firmware onto an S2. But if you flash the wrong firmware of the same device and you see it bricked, it's pretty easy to get out of it, since it's a soft brick.
Rooting is very easy. It takes in total 10 seconds and it's completely painless. Rooting is having R/W access to the /root folder of the device, AKA system, data, etc.Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
I see, thanks for that Phistachio. I like the snappiness of the OS as that thing flies in that video, plus it's nice to know that it's hard to brick a Sammy phone! I probably give myself a bit more time to get used to it first then become a bit more adventurous with the flashing stuff later. I'm just hoping it would be a hell lot more reliable than my iPhone too, keep having some random freezes and shutdowns lately!
-
Use the phone as is for a while and see if you like it. No need to rush into flashing, rooting, etc.
When you're ready after a few weeks or months, then do that extra stuff. It's not like the GS III is slow or power sucking on the software as it is + there's plenty of handy features TouchWiz offers.

I just unlocked the bootloader on my Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Yeah!
-
My co-workers were amused by the size of the Note 2 and they didn't believe there are bigger phablets out there.
-
There's no such things as phablets - one's a phone, the other is a tablet.
-
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Sony C660x is supposed to be like 6" 1080p phone/tablet..
-
Correction, 5" phablet.
-
It comes down to your interpretation. For me, something that offers the same functionality as a tablet with telephony features is enough for me. For others, it may be an abnormally large phone, and of course...there's those that do not like the term for the fact it isn't in the Merriam-Webster English Dictionary. My sincerest condolences if informal terms are your nitpicks. -
I'd say a lot of it comes down to the manufacturer's interpretation/definition.
-
Doesn't Samsung say that about the Note 2?
Every Samsung billboard I read at the malls says "Is it a phone? Or is it a tablet?". Sounds like they are calling it a phablet too. -
No, they call it the Note.
But if pushed, it's a very large phone.
The very last thing it is is a 'phablet', you shouldn't find anyone who works for Samsung calling it that - same way none of them should call the S-Pen a stylus. -
The term 'phablet' was coined by some digital publication when the original Note came out and is not a formal term. I believe LG filed a trademark to claim it last year, even though ironically enough I think the Dell Streak 5 was the first device that would be considered as such.
With that said, I'm going to have to recant my statement of the Note 10.1 being a 'phablet', simply for the fact that it lacks an earpiece and therefore cannot be handled as a typical phone with voice calls outside of using a Bluetooth headset. So it's a tablet with the ability to perform voice calls. -
I'm betting someone at Sammy has called it a phablet on more than one occasioin.
Just because you say it doesn't exist does not mean everyone agrees with you... unless *you* invented the word "phablet". A phablet is a device that can be a phone or a tablet, the Note does that in my (and probably many others) definition. Maybe you think a phablet is a tablet that can make phone calls... so it's all relative.
Did you also argue that "smartphones" are not PDAs combined with phones? -
Of course they probably have but there is specific instruction not to use the term.
I didn't say that. The fact that people are using the name clearly means the term exists.
But it doesn't really matter what made-up name people choose to call the Note, it's still a phone. -
Using your logic, I can say it doesnt really matter that you think it's a phone, many others think it's a phablet.
So what is your definition of phablet? Because I'm still wondering how you are saying the Note 2 is not one.
Maybe you should edit Wikipedia's entry:

After a week with the Note II, I can honestly say it's the best Android phone available, at least for my uses. I require a decent screen, long battery life, and up to date hardware. It has all of that.
The screen is gorgeous, and I'm comparing it to my iPhone 5. I was on a long car ride yesterday, and the battery lasted 4:45 minutes of screen time on 3G. My S3 would last a maximum of like 3 hours of screen time(Pandora was playing in the background for almost 3 hours). The hardware is basically the latest and greatest, and I haven't seen a hiccup.
The only issue I have with it is idle battery drain. It seems to draw a bit more at idle than other Android phones. I noticed the same with my S3. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Was it maybe OS related? I noticed with CM10 my battery life was pretty poor, though it was a Nightly build. Returning it to a modified 4.0, battery life is much better than 2.3. -
But using your own reasoning that unless you had a hand in creating something, you have no say in anything relating to it, Samsung created the Note/Note2 and don't want them to be called phablets - meaning anyone else who calls them phablets is just wrong.
It's one of those stupid made-up names like most music genres. -
More Yuga News.
Sony Yuga leaks again with 5" Full HD LCD display
Hopefully this is just a prototype thing, but the Nexus 4/Optimus G has also been reported getting quite hot under heavy usage as well. The APQ8064 may need a die shrink before it becomes a viable choice for these slim smartphones. -
I'm sure puffs doesn't like it when people refer to their tissues as Kleenex, but thems the breaks. You can't always dictate the public consciousness. It seems like a pretty meaningless distinction anyway.
-
That seems to be a very American thing, I'm not aware of ever having heard anyone call a tissue a Kleenex, regardless of what brand it was.
-
It may be American, but the point still stands. Samsung may not like it, but it seems a little pedantic to try to correct every usage of the term.
-
If Samsung doesn't like the portmanteau of "phablet"... then maybe they should stop using advertising that says "Phone? Tablet?"... because that's what is going to happen.
I still don't see how calling it a "phablet" is wrong, even if Samsung doesn't want them to be called that (is that documented btw?). It would be wrong to call it an "iPhone"... or maybe they know their cousin competition LG is branding the term and are trying to avoid it.
So you don't like "Hip Hop" or "Gansta Rap"?
-
Possibly. I installed BetterBatteryStats, and the app that caused the most wakelocks was Maps.

I've been having problems with maps on my razr maxx hd as well it was using in the neighborhood of 25% of the battery and keeping the phone awake

Is your RAZR running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 2 -
I don't, I expressed an opinion once and the rest of this has been me having to defend it.
I already explained that, it's like the whole 'Is it a bird? Is it a plane?' thing - it's not a blane, it's Superman.
Fair enough.
If it is, it'll only be internally.
If LG have trademarked 'phablet', how is calling the Note a phablet any different to calling it an iPhone?
No, I much prefer avant-garde metal
-
4.1.1 ota from verizon
-
oh. i only like gangnam style hip hop. Did it hit 1 billion yet??
-
Gangnam Style is NOT hip hop... it's K-pop.
Whoooh... you reached far on that one. If there was a plane that flapped it's wings like a bird, people would call it a blane... or a plird... even if it's formal name was Galaxy Plane 3.
And yes, if LG trademarked "phablet" and called their LG VU 2, the LG Phablet, than it would be the same as calling the Note an iPhone... but until then, the term "phablet" refers to a class of phones with big screens.. which almost everyone but you thinks the Note/Note 2 falls into. -
Not really - that's the way the advertising is supposed to be read, it's neither a phone or tablet, it's the Note.
They have trademarked 'phablet', well applied for a trademark.
Whether they call one individual handset the phablet or a range of them (a la Galaxy or Optimus), it's still a rival company's name. -
Guys, stop fighting. Some people want to call it phablet, some want to call it a phone. Where's the big deal in this?
I like to call it phablet as well. Speaking of the Note 2, a friend of mine bought, and WOW. It FLIES! So smooth and beautiful, screen is gorgeous (tho I do miss the higher PPI), but the 1st thing I would do is to change its DPI to 240. Way too high as a XHDPI, not my style.
But I played with it, and I was impressed by how "natural" it fitted my hand... I thought I would have a hard time getting used to it, but one hand operation was no problem for me! Can't wait for New Year
