I did say it would require a retool of the current type-D HDMI into a new revision that supports charging and a USB channel. At least then the same type-D microHDMI plug can still be used (just one end needs to be made into a USB plug for PC connectivity). Alternately, a dual function USB/microHDMI port that could take both a microHDMI or microUSB cable is <remotely>possible (like eSATA/USB), but improbable.
I would not put much stock in the EU mandate to standardize mobile chargers though. The very instant the EU tried to push Apple into changing the port on the iDevices, they will sue every country in Europe and stop imports of their devices just to screw with you. Cause they're that crazy. And they won't stop until the courts or the Internal Market Committee repeals the order.
Again, MHL is oh-so buggy.

Lost ~40% battery over night.. Phone was face down so the screen shouldn't have been coming on, but the battery page says it was off and on all night.
-
Well Apple did. They said 'Look, we give you a USB port on the charger and a totally impractical converter, OK? Happy? Now **** off, EU, like we care.'
It's high time we had something like PDMI or proper USB4.0 (with proper design to allow docking) - i.e. a universal standard all-purpose interface.killkenny1 and radji like this. -

something that can be useful -
A completely different situation, Apple aren't trying to have Lightning adopted across the industry.
Not to mention, they could still be forced to adopt microUSB. The latest EU ruling on the matter was reached after the launch of the 5S, they could yet come after Apple.

No, it just means that you think it's a kids toy because you don't see the potential in the platform. AND because different people have different needs.
Say you only have your smartphone on you and your enterprise IT dept is having connectivity issues... I can use a bluetooth serial adapter, pair it with my Android tablet/phone and configure just about anything with Cisco IOS. And that's just one mission critical application. There are MANY.
Smartphones are INCREDIBLY powerful little devices right now. If you know what you're doing, you can do literally anything you can do with a notebook. -
Oooooooh. I'd hate to be the sorry European country(s) that try to force that. Apple has more money to burn than most of the EU. And if they're willing to go bankrupt just to decapitate Google, how far you think their willing to go when you Euro's try and force them to change their designs?
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
oh i see the potential, however to say something can be more than a consumption device and what it is now are wildly different things.
while you see android as a very powerful thing right now i just see something that is making baby strides since its release
sister still has a 2.2 device and sincerely aside some ui changes and more apps, disregarding quality and control, I don't see much difference from a user perspective.
one thing that worries me more than the lack of control regarding whats in the store and the inevitable rise for anti virus, is google development of their own apps.
but lets end this with or without your response, Im still very irritated. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
That's pretty bad if you can't see the changes to, almost, the entire OS.
Almost the entire foundation is completely different from 2.2/3 to the jump to 4.x.
To quote Steve... you're using it wrong. But I'll leave it there, because we're quite obviously not on the same page. -

Got offered an early upgrade, but nothing interests me at the moment. S5 is supposed to be shipping like March I think so I think I'll just save it until then. I just have to decide if it's worth investing in something like this in the mean time to combat the battery:

It's because the ad is showing clips from, like, 50 different movies. They probably can't get rights for other countries. Which is sad, but it doesn't diminish the quality of the ad itself. It puts Apple's latest ads to shame, really. -

Not necessarily...
But then, Nokia is the only company out there that can successfully market a Windows Phone... I'm 100% convinced. Microsoft cannot.

you know... I can and defend apple on occasion, specially from fan haters of the brand, they lack usually something solid to bash
however one thing that i never said is that they have a great streak regarding commercials. they have occasionally one that is good, but most aren't even interesting, for example the 5s ones and I didn't like the 5c as well -
They're rarely designed to be interesting. They're designed to pluck the heartstrings of their target market. And Google, again being the real wannabe Apple they are (in a way Microsoft never really has been) clones it, not quite as well.
More than anything else though that iPhone logo not/showing through the case just bugs the hell out of me. If anyone else did it the Apple fanbois would be falling over themselves to bash it. As things are, only the odd murmur of complaint. I really thought it was an ad copy error at first, then saw the real thing and went slack-jawed. -

NEVER.
No part of that iPhone 5C case would have even been conceptualized.
So anyways, back to Android... got me an LG G2. Dat bezel. -
Nice, first impressions? I contemplated one for a while. I think HTW has one as well..
-
I had a G2 a few weeks ago. Solid all around phone. If the LG skin doesn't bother you, it's one of the best to get right now. Better battery life than the Note 3 and easy to use in one hand. I sold it because I'm primarily an Apple user now, not because of a flaw.

Great little phone. I say little because I just came from a 6" phone and it feels like a pebble.
Anyways, I have stock CM KitKat on it ATM. It's like a very premium version of the Nexus 5. Also, it's the first LCD device I've ever had that has perfect backlight uniformity. Even the Lumia 1520 had a bit of fall-off on the right hand side of the display, just like my Nexus 4 does. IDK how the G2 handles backlighting, but whatever it is, it's different than what everyone else is doing. -
Sharp outs Aquos mini SHL24 with the smallest 4.5" 1080p display, ultra compact EDGEST design
I feel that's a very nice phone, but sadly it's Japan only? When will they think of poor Americans with small hands!
-
It's not just small hands - I want true one-handed.
(No jokes please)
Not quote on topic, but anyone got a Jolla yet? I see that it got panned in the tech press, but the N900 did as well and I really liked the way that OS worked, even on a resistive screen (the hardware's bulkiness, not so much). I'm thinking with Google first-party apps and services getting ever more intrusive and sneaky in terms of how they'll suddenly spring stuff like the 'marketing and promotions' thing for example, I would want to jump off Android itself eventually.
I haven't bothered searching for objective impressions ye, but was wondering. -
My backlight keeps auto adjusting. I've disabled auto, as well as all other backlight-adjusting features I can find and it still does it. It's dimmed when I wake the phone, but not consistently. I haven't figured out what triggers it.. Any ideas?
Also, the finish is starting to peel off my back cover. This bother me. I've never had this happen on any phone, and I've only had this one a year. -
Talking about easing out of Android due to first-party app concerns, I might get a non-handset Android PMP that I can still run non-Google Android apps I like on and keep it past the eventual retiring of the Z1 Compact.
Out March, apparently. -
It would have been.

Day two of using the G2 and I cannot stress how good looking this thing is from the front. It's honestly beautiful. What lets it down are the buttons on the back side. They could have been done better. That sapphire crystal camera lens is nice though. LG has the right idea when it comes to device design... MUCH moreso than Samsung. Plus it has weight in the hand, which gives it a more premium feel, IMO.
Also, today I was looking at album covers in Play Music and I could get out a magnifying glass and read details off the optometry equipment in JT's 20/20 album art. That's pretty amazing. This and the Nexus 5 are the first devices where I literally cannot see pixels with my naked eye, even if I look close and TRY to see them.
The only thing that bothers me is that LG seems content to ship the G2 with only .29v at the headphone jack, where the HTC One ships with .6v+. The G2 simply doesn't output anywhere near the same volume as the HTC. Neither can touch the iPhone 4S at .8v though. :/ I mean, I do have a headphone AMP, but I'd rather not have to use it for flipping earbuds. -
Interesting, didn't know there was that much variation. Where do you get this information? I'd definitely like to find out more and compare a couple phones.

Confirmed: Google will sell Motorola Mobility to Lenovo for $2.91 billion | Ars Technica
google is going to sell motorola....
that must be one of the most stupid moves by google, details will reveal if its the most stupid (if they also don't hold anymore the thousands of patents), or if they just like to take a huge monetary loss, while doing all the work to get the company back on track, meanwhile launching 2 very commented and apparently successful smartphones in their bid to restructure the line up -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Not really surprised...they retain the patents which is what Google wanted all long. Always felt Motorola was a tier 2 OEM for smartphones...only good phone was OG Droid.
