In pre v5 though. Have you tried v5? I have norton 360 since v3, and I can say that v5 is as lightweight as MSE. It's an extremely good anti virus at this moment :)

At the start of these threads, it was suppose to be more than just apps?
    ...Phones, and Discussion
That said, I have a Dell Streak 5 and it's the best phone yet. I took back my iPhone4 for it a few months ago and never looked back.

    The thread was re-purposed.
Initially it was an app recommendation thread but then all Android threads were merged together and this is the result.

So, yeah, reading from the start it's just apps - you can see that from the post titles: Re: Best Android Apps

Actually, that really is two different topics and should have been left that way:
    Apps
    Phones

The way it is now, it's so long, no one will ever read all the pages. ;)

This is a laptop forum, not a phone forum.

And even if there were two separate threads, they'd probably both be long enough that people wouldn't read all the way through, not to mention you'd inevitably end up with people posting in the wrong thread.

turns out it's android's fault throughout, foursquare's and facebook's push notifications aren't working either. it's a good thing i'll be the first in line for the new apple iphone whenever it's released. i've had it with these 2nd grade crap apps.

no, android is better just because it's free and not by apple communism marxism etc.

i've checked everything, the problem is at android's end, since many apps' notification service isn't working since last night.

iOS is better in a lot of ways, including app quality. Really comes down to personal preferences between OS's and which strengths are more important to each individual.

Yes, of course! But I was talking about the phone itself, not the software ;)

From my experiences ( my mother has an X10 mini and I have an iPod ) the app quality is better on Android, not only because of more variety, but also the quality :)

    Indeed.

Also, Motorola and HTC both have different background sync schedules, with each schedule being different for each platform update and time of day... On my Nexus S and GSII, the background push notifications are working fine. On my Motorola Atrix, they're not. On my Atrix I'm getting notifications like normal from Twitter, not push.

Blame HTC, not Google. Google puts out wonderful software, but it counts on the OEM's to get it right... most don't. HTC needs a bit of chlorine in their Android pool... Samsung, on the other hand, gets it right more times than one would expect, and that maybe why they're Google's new OEM partner.

just twitter as far as i know, i haven't had an email today, so i don't know about gmail or my uni notifications (both push). normal twitter notifications aren't working either now, and i'm not alone, this new update has messed up others' notifications too.

LOL... Your score is on the high side of Galaxy S 1 scores. It has to do with Samsung's BML/RFS file system.

    AOSP/CM7 uses MTD/YAFFS2. :) Much faster.

Still such a mediocre device IMO. Dated looking hardware, lackluster pentile QHD screen, encrypted bootloader, lousy keyboard... the list goes on.

Also, I HATE phonedog and Aaron's reviews. No structure at all, just constant rambling.

Check, Check, BIG Check, Check, ?, ...

Ditto. I muted it and skipped to where he was actually using the phone.

The OMAP 4460 handles Motoblur like a champ though... the animations that are usually choppy on Moto-Tegra devices are buttery smooth. Main reason I've found is that Tegra lacks GPU bandwidth BIG-TIME. Seriously. My Captivate gets around 430-450MB/s of bandwidth, while my dual-core A9 toting Atrix with "NVIDIA" graphics gets about 120MB/s-150MB/s. That's just sad. Looks like the OMAP 4 platform is just as beastly as I thought it would be. The SGX540 makes GeForce ULP look sad....

The screen right now's the deal breaker. I'm hearing too many reports of it being pixelated. That's unacceptable imo...BUT i'd potentially be willing to deal with it if it looked ok in person. I have yet to make it to a vzw store.

I love the industrial design personally. I wasn't a fan of D2/D2G's revisions to the OG droid design, but this looks a lot cleaner. I will gripe about how the back key isn't positioned for quick access from the keyboard like the OG droid, I quite like that feature.

I'm (foolishly) hoping that it'll be unencrypted atrix style, but who am I kidding...this is Verizon. They still cripple bluetooth on their most basic handsets (I was shocked to see this clear as day on the LG Cosmos' I had to get when I added lines a few weeks ago...nor bad phones otherwise) ffs, why would I think they'd let the bootloader be unencrypted.

Still, people worked around that on D2/D2G and DX/DX2 so I'm sure they will for D3...it just makes things a bit more limiting and the process more time consuming.

The keyboard not sucking is shocking to me but that's what both owners and reviewers are saying. It may not be the "keyboard of the gods" that is the Touch Pro 2's (btw htc, make a TP2 4 inch device with modern internals + stock android and i'd buy tomorrow!) but it looks vastly improved in terms of key sizing.

I know I really have no excuse to not wait (especially if I save up) but it's tough when you seemingly hit your devices upper limits in day to day use. I had to revert to Peter Alfonso's "stock" GB build because the MIUI port for Droid would get horribly laggy at the most inexplicable times, even with a 1.2 ghz kernal flashed. While returning to vanila was a breath of fresh air (phone feels snappy as hell...loving it) I liked the refined nature of MIUI when it was working right. Perhaps it was the build or something but yeah. I was going to write a review of it, but couldn't even get that far...the odd performance glitches drove me that insane.

Also, its frustrating not being able to use my phone for music unless I use it in the car (and never touch the cable..annoyingly hard to do with the power button-sunk in and half broken btw- right next to it) as any contact/jostling of a cord plugged into the headphone jack causes either staticky interfearence/mono sound, or results in the phone doing things on its own like launchng the music player, causing pandora to enter a "play/pause" loop, or activating shuffle and repeat or skip track.

While he'll never ever truly fill Noah's shoes, Aaron's not bad...long winded but not bad. I do prefer MobileBurn's reviews more but they don't have one up about the droid 3. PocketNow's reviews are by far the most detailed (like dedicated 15 to 20 min vids just about the phone's software, dedicated hardware vids, etc.) I've seen...but I can only stand Brandon. Everyone else is a bit "meh" in terms of idk...enthusiasm.

Hal, sorry I couldn't quote you (typing this via phone) but I noticed how fast it was with MAP in nerly every video I watched. Glad to read an explanation why.

The news about tegra worries me, hopefully the us won't get tegra based galaxy s 2 devices in that case. Sounds like the buttery smooth experience shown off just wouldn't be the same on a Tegra based GSII

It's not very good at all... trust me. They're using some wierd type of sub-pixel color arrangement. Actually, on my Atrix my AOSP green signal bars almost blend together, and it's not because of the actual framework image either... ;)

Give me just a sec and I'll show you what I'm talking about....

EDIT: so not so much blending, but just horrible looking. I can't describe it, you'd just have to see it, but my Captivate just looks better... but not like the GS2. The GS2 blows them both completely out of the water. RGB FTW! Pentile FTL!

Warning, Dragons Ahead! Super large pictures!

That's not a bad score for stock! The Captivate on i9000 JVP with no RFS-->EXT4 conversion is around 600-650.

BTW, I've figured out with my super-duper magnifying glass that the Atrix is a Pentile RGBW arrangement, while the Samsung S-AMOLED is a Pentile RGBG. On AMOLED the blue and red sub-pixels have a shorter expected life span, so they had to make the actual blue and red sub-pixels larger than the green.

When I say all stock, I mean stock browser, stock firmware, stock CPU speed.
I've rooted, removed some bloatware and changed the launcher but that's nothing to do with the browser, is it?

I did think the two pentile pictures looked different but I couldn't work out if that was down to differing magnifications or something like that.

    LOL.. I wouldn't think so. :)

Yea, and obviously RGBW fails. If Samsung's new 720p S-AMOLED panel is indeed Pentile, I might could learn to love it if it's RGBG. If it's RGBW, I'm not so sure. It's a glaring issue on the Atrix, as with certain instances, like playing Galaxy On Fire 2 THD, the asteroid/ship/planet textures appear to crawl. Same with certain parts of the Gingerbread UI with the screen brightness turned up.

I wouldn't say that, if anything the image of the Captivate's screen struck me as being fuzzier, not to mention a fairly obvious colour cast when you look at the two.
It's not like any of the screens actually look good that close, even the Galaxy S2 whilst clearly superior doesn't exactly look great at such ridiculous magnifications.

So, is the 720p sAMOLED panel real then?
You're talking about it almost as an inevitability...

We'll just have to wait and see about the pentilityness ( What? That's totally a word!) of if.

In the shorter term, I'm still more interested in the SE Duo as I'm increasingly convinced that it's the next handset SE will be giving out to us Ambassadors.
It's just a question of whether I'll still be describing the Ambassadors as 'us' by the time it arrives...

Not bad for the old gal, eh?! Gotta love AOSP software! Nothing to bog it down!

Well, true. Ridiculous magnification aside though, the Captivate looks better in real life situations. I think it's got something to do with Samsung's Pentile driver giving things a "glow". Also, I've noticed the Atrix to be MUCH warmer than stock Samsung with colors. On AOSP software though, the Captivate produces better/warmer colors... just not a pure white.

From everything that I know, it's coming... though I believe the minimum panel size is 4.3-4.5". So no small Google handset, if that ends up in the next Nexus. A Nexus phone with a 4.5" 720p Samsung AMOLED.... sorry, had to wipe my drool off..

The SE Duo does sound very interesting though. It's nice to see SE pursue the super-phone market. There's lots of $$$ to be made there. And while the Arc, Pro, and Play are nice, they're not superphone material. Why... won't you be an Ambassador then?

And any insight as to which handsets are likely to have it?
Obviously, Samsung will use it but is it going to grace a Nexus handset?

I know what you're saying, the Arc isn't a Galaxy S2 challenger on paper but it really is a lovely handset to use, I can't stress how pleasantly surprised I am with it still.
The Duo does represent a serious step forward though and one SE need to take - as good as the Arc and Play are, they're not selling well enough.

If the rumoured specs on the Duo are pretty accurate, I would go so far as to say it's better than anything on the market just now.

As for the Ambassador thing, it'd be funny if it wasn't so sad.
I'll explain in more detail later but I have to nip out just now...

edIt: ok, so, the Ambassador thing.

A couple of days ago at work I heard that HTC are launching a similar scheme to SE, handing out handsets to people in retail stores. So I went onto the SE Ambassador facebook group and asked if anyone else had heard about it and within moments, had been called a traitor.
There were a few reasonable comments mixed in but basically I faced a wave of ignorant crap from other people on the Ambassador scheme because I have an interest in more than just SE - it's my bleeping job, I work for an independent retailer, I'm not beholden to one manufacturer. But apparently this makes me scum.
A number of people basically told me to bleep off if I want to be on the HTC scheme so much, they wouldn't miss me, less competition etc etc. At no point had I said I would prefer to be on HTC's scheme, merely that I wondered if it would be possible to be involved in both ( which one particularly retarded fanboy told me was immoral, like working for Ford and driving a Toyota... ).

So now I'm wondering whether I want to be involved with this lot, not least because the top prize at the end of the year ( which I reckon I'm in with a decent shout of getting, if I say so myself) is an all-expenses trip to Las Vegas and CES with 9 other people from this scheme - I'm not sure I want to spend time with anyone else involved in the scheme since they all appear to be a particularly offensive type of moron.

Then again, part of me wants to stick around and beat these idiots - I'd love to be offered the trip to Vegas then announce on the facebook group that I wasn't going because I'd rather miss out than have to spend time with any of the other Ambassadors. Then again, I think going to CES and getting a paid holiday to Vegas ( they wine you and dine you etc) is really cool and would actually like to win it and go...

    It just pisses me off.

Alright that's atrocious, (the Atrix) I could deal with it...but it would bug me.

I'm probably now off the phone market (yes...again...) because of this:

A closer look at Verizon's Samsung slider with Android 2.3.4 and LTE | Android Central

LTE, Epic (literally) keyboard, great screen, if this has Galaxy S II internals as rumored (doubt it but good to dream) I'm DEFINETLY getting it.

Now it's a matter of playing the waiting game some more.
