Yup, the amount and depth of technical details the put into their (phone) articles and reviews are unmatched. Makes for a good read for people who want to know more about the innards of their smartphone.

So I was waiting and waiting and waiting for the Bionic to drop so I could upgrade from my OG Droid which has been sluggish ever since it got 2.2. Obviously as soon as the Bionic FINALLY comes out, the hype starts up for the Droid/Nexus Prime. Now I'm trying to suppress the urge to get the Bionic
I did want the Sammy G S II, but obviously VZW isn't carrying it. -
yah, im reading the review now, didnt take long for me to be won over
-
This is interesting:
-
Oh and on a separate note, I'm getting an Xperia Ray.
-
Meh, too small IMO. Get the Xperia Arc S, has an OC'd CPU to 1.4Ghz
Woah, so AH IPS is better than SAMOLED+?
Seems nice though, but it's disappointing that it is Qualcomm and not TI. -
I'm in the same boat so to speak lol. Have you rooted and applyed a custom rom/overclocked kernal. I'm on gingerbread and the only thing really holding me back is the lack of RAM and program storage memory.
I'm hoping that the prime will be a good option for me. I wanted the galaxy s 2 mainly for the software. If the prime turns out to be a "droid prime" and has touchwiz 4, I'd be pleased as punch, but i'll doubt that.
in that case ill give the stratosphere a shot if the prime's keyboard isnt up to my standards -
If I wanted an Arc S, I'd OC my Arc
Anyway, I'm being given it as well as my Arc.
Oh and I'm been taken for an all-expenses-paid night out in Manchester. -
Well, with an Arc S you can OC even FURTHER!
Man, you're lucky...
Did you see the Manchester Untd vs Benfica yesterday?
-
I doubt it - the MSM8255T the Arc S uses seems to simply be a factory-OCed MSM8255, which the Arc uses.
People already have stable OCs of ~1.8-1.9GHz on the Arc.
I guess luck plays a part but I feel I've earned these treats and SE must feel so too to be providing them.
Oh and this is who I'll be spending said evening with... (and 9 other people from the Ambassador scheme)
Not interested in Man Utd to be honest. -
>_>
<_<
>_>
<_<
You're so damn lucky
Have fun! But I think that's useless to say, because you'll definitely have a good time with that kind of company!
SE does indeed make amazing devices. If they had a dual core phone that looks like the Arc, I would've chosen it over the GS2 anytime
Well, if they did stable at 1.9Ghz, then do the math :
> Stable at 1.9Ghz from 1Ghz
> Increase of 0.9GHz
> Stock is 1.4GHz on Arc S
> 1.4GHz + 0.9GHz = 2.5GHz
> ???
> Profit!
> Faster than GSII by 100MHz! -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Higher clock speed != better performance
It will be higher performing, yes, but an A9 core still wins in the DMIPS per MHz at lower clock speeds.
-
Yes, but in a situation where high clocks are required, my "virtually OC'd Arc S" would win, right?
This, as I predicted, got me mad :
No update on Samsung Kies over here
I have read around the website, and they do release through kies... BAH
EDIT : According to this, I have a UK version of my build?
( PHONE : I9100XXKE6 )
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Nope. Unless the app was shoddily written. The dual-A9 would squash it. A dual-core A9 at 1.2GHz would walk all over an A8 at 1.5GHz... or even higher.
But yes, some firmware versions they do release through Kies... most don't though. And yes, you're running a UK firmware build. There isn't a special Portuguese build of Android for the SGS2. The build you're running has multi-csc, and all the languages of all the countries the SGS2 is shipping in with the exception of Arabic and Hebrew. Arabic and Hebrew languages get a special build with customizations for reading text right to left. They may actually include the language pack, but they won't read right to left on UK firmware builds... they'll read left to right. -
If I'm running an UK build, and I'm located in Portugal, it means I'm not getting any updates because my IP is Portuguese thus giving me Portuguese updates info which result in version mismatch?
I'll just put my info for future reference :
PHONE : I9100XXKE6
PDA : I9100XWKEB
CSC : I9100TMNKE2
XX, XW mean UK version, but what does KEB and KE mean? I ran down that code page thrice, and no dice on their meaning. TMN is my carrier btw. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Ok... so you're running the UK firmware, but have a carrier CSC. Interesting. I was wondering how the carriers over there were doing this.
And kies doesn't identify who to send updates to based on IP location... it goes by the CSC. You're running a UK firmware with a custom carrier CSC. Flashing a Samfirmware release would put you on a multi-CSC, and bring you in line with the UK model.
Also, the build numbers on the baseband (PHONE) and the kernel/software revision (PDA) aren't really indicative of anything, other than version increments. -
Another reason why I dislike Portugal : tech-support-wise, we're stoopid
Mmm, so if I flash a SF release through ODIN would make my phone "completely international" and allow me to perform Kies updates?
Bah, why couldn't my carrier use all UK or all Portuguese...?
EDIT : Wait a minute... CSC is what handles network comms, right? So, if I unlock the phone, theoretically, all my probs with Kies and everything else would be gone? -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
CSC handles carrier customizations, yes. But nothing more than that really, aside from handset identification through KIES. Flashing a different CSC will wipe your phone though... just warning you.
I still don't understand why you use KIES though. LOL. KIES uses ODIN to flash the updates it downloads. KIES is completely unnecessary IMO, seeing as how half the time it doesn't work correctly anyway. The KIES Air thing is kinda nifty at times, but it's clunky. Samsung needs to really put some effort into revamping KIES...

A note about the whole facebook posting thing...I seem to be getting the "via Mobile" tab under my FB updates too, as opposed to FB for Android.

The 90s called, they want their clip art back.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Clippy sees what you did there...
-
I have an Xperia Ray.
-
So, how does it feel? Is it small compared to the Arc?
-
It feels really quite nice in the hand, slim with the aluminium frame round the screen.
Not used it yet though, it's still on charge - only got given it last thing this afternoon at work. -
Ah, but shouldn't you first completely kill your battery, and then do a full recharge?
Aluminum is indeed a great addon. Feels very businessy! -
Nah, it'll sort itself out over the course of the first week or so of use.
edit: that said, it seems to be pretty much flat out the box anyway.
edit #2: yep, very dead - been on charge a good 5-10 minutes before the charging animation appeared in a little flurry of life. -
lol.
My GSII, out of the box, came with 30%. It holded from 4PM to the end of the day without charging in its 1st out of the box day. -
My GSII is delayed on backorder
I'm stuck with a dumbphone until it gets here
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
So you're just going to have to chinchill' until it arrives?
-
/facepalm

More like want to smash my head into a wall when i attempt to text, and snap the flip phone in half
but sure lets stick with that
-
So...anyone want a good deal on a Samsung Intercept for Virgin Mobile?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
ROFL! Seriously though, I might buy it from you to play with...
EDIT: http://pocketnow.com/smartphone-news/nokia-n9-seems-successfull-all-64gb-models-pre-ordered -
Yeah, I saw that.
This bit is hilarious:MeeGo will never be a success story, Nokia have killed it and even Intel are trying to distance themselves. -
Seems the pre-orders of the GSII "overwhelmed them"
But I'll be getting free overnight shipping now, shipping on tues or wed!
Cant decide... Hard Snap on Rubberized Case or TPU Case? -
Leaked Specs Galaxy S III - www.SamFirmware.com
Why. Did. I buy. The. GS II.
WHY?!
@ahl Cancel your pre-order, because you'll regret when you see that link
   -
Disgustingly awesome if true...
-
Unless there is a definite release date in the U.S., and it's less than six months away, I'm just going with the GS2. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
You have a vendetta against MeeGo, don't you? lol. I'll get one, whether it's ultimately doomed or not. It looks like a lot of people put a lot of time in on that interface, and I'm interested in Harmattan.
At those of you talking about the GSIII: That phone will _never_ have a 1280x1024 resolution screen, nor will any phone. Unless you want a square phone... 1280x1024 is a 5:4 screen ratio, and it fits nowhere into any space, ICS or not. I think someone is talking out of their rear, especially about the screen panel.
-
Cool!
Anywho, why do you think that's not true? The CPU part I believe, but now that you mention, the panel parts seems fishy... -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Personally, I don't even believe the quad-core CPU rumor. If anything, I think it will be a die shrunk dual-core A9 for phone devices. At 28nm 2GHz is not unreasonable. A quad core at 2GHz in a phone is WAYYYYY overkill. 1280x800 S-AMOLED+ with a 2GHz 28nm Exynos is my guess. They may update Exynos' GPU to something PowerVR though. -
LOL, there is always something new thats better on the horizon
If you waited for every better one you'd never buy the phone
There are 2.5Ghz Quad Cores coming. But mainly in tablets when they do. I think itll probably be a 2Ghz Dual core. Probably a few more years before we have quad core phones.
-
Is it a vendetta to call a failure a failure?
MeeGo is what it is, Nokia and Elop especially made sure of that.
It's not an indictment of the quality of the OS, merely the way it's been handled/marketed etc.
I'm just feeling a tad smug because I called it ages ago... -
This. MeeGo never stood a chance. Imagine the marketing dollars that Nokia would have had to spend, the money they'd spend courting devs for it...it doesn't have the name recognition that (for better or worse) the Windows brand has and look at how well WP is doing atm.
Not to mention they'd run into the same problems as WP in stores...it would be very tough for them. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Well, like CM7 and Maemo, it will be maintained by the community. Since it's Linux based, I'm excites me to think it maybe adaptable to other devices. The kernel could be adapted and used on other Linux based devices...
I still like it, doomed or not. -
Amazon offers $50 gift card with all Verizon phones
Gah Amazon, you're killin' me!
must. not. buy. droid. charge. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Yep. OMAP preferred. I wonder why NVIDIA... everyone in the Android community really loves your closed source CRAP on top of providing OLD kernel source. 2.6.32.9 isn't Gingerbread, no matter how you slice it.
Notion Ink CEO Hints Late October ICS Launch, OMAP Preferred -
I'm trying so hard to resist the Bionic. Why must the Nexus Prime be so...nebulous? I'm not even sure it's a real phone, I'm pretty sure I'm getting trolled.

It's real: Panda Poem through Tom @tfleming223 - Page 16 - Android Forums
The latest is that it'll probably have a QWERTY keyboard.
It's like my dream phone has finally come out.
(Yes, the keyboard trumps all...even software enhancements (sorry TW4)) -
I'm pretty meh on a keyboard, I almost never use the one on my OG Droid. I really just want to switch away from this thing, it really wasn't made for Froyo.
