I think the HTC Titan is pretty nice looking (though its WP7). At this point though, its Samsung or nothing for me (not out of fanboyism, but because they have the best hardware as of right now).
-
^ LOL, this is OT but I was like..."where has mrXniick been..." just yesterday when I visited this thread.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Indeed. Utilitarian, but nice. Plus that massive display.
I know, right?! -
It just had the slight issue of not being a unibody handset.
-
I converted my cousin to the Android Army. He was previously a member of the iCult, but he recently got an Atrix and when I saw him this weekend he was RAVING about how awesome the phone is.
-
Just jumping in this thread, to shout out with joy, of having a new Samsung Galaxy S2 right now...
haha! It's been ~3 hrs in my hand, and it's an awesome phone..
Now just browsing through the Android market to get the top apps and stuff like that.. love it
Cheers
-
This just made my day!
Keeping in line the reason of the thread...I have been looking for a nice looking clock widget...digital, not analog...I've tried GoClock...nice animations but not enough skins...fancy widgets...beautiful widgets...htc sense glass...
But I'm still not convinced by any...is there any recommendation??? -
So is there anything HANDHELD like a Tablet with Android that's NOT a phone? I really don't care to have a huge hulking tablet, more something to use like the HTC Titan for web surfing, basic PIM functions, etc. I don't want to get a phone through my wireless provider and pay $30/mo extra for their services, but want the function. I miss my Palm PDA.
-
Eh.. the Dell Streak, HTC Flyer, tons of other smaller Android tablets that are made from no-name brands that cost like $150 at Walgreen's running 2.2 Froyo and don't have access to the Android Market. =s
-
Galaxy Player 5.0?
-
Holy...
You just don't realise how huge it is until you see it in context. -
ROFL...yes you just don't realize at all...that is the 5.0 right???
-
No, that's the Galaxy Note.
It's a wee bit bigger with a 5.3" screen. -
Dell Streak looks decent but the Galaxy Player looks awesome. $269 for the 5.0, good price range too. I think I'm sold. Not sure what OS it's running though, surely not honeycomb?
edit: OS says Android 2.2 on Amazon.com. October 16. Might have to pre-order.
I also just spent a little time at Best Buy with a BB geek breathing down my neck while I toyed with the tablets. I like them. Just smaller is better for me and that Galaxy Player looks perfect. Yummy. Although I hate touch screen keyboards, but you can't get small tablet and large keyboard.
But then the question is: iPod Touch or Samsung. I am loathe to touch anything Apple though and be sucked into their market structure. And I think Android apps and games are probably more likely to be free and cheaper too.
Are there any good PIM apps for Android? Like calendar, to-do list, notes, etc? Any of these any good: http://www.brighthub.com/mobile/google-android/articles/88991.aspx -
Geez...forgot about the note...its just the fact that having tablets and pseudo phone/tablets just confuses me...LOL...does not mean Im not getting one eventually...nonetheless it looks like a galaxy S 2 on steroids or Supersize me
-
Galaxy Player has an FM RADIO! I'm definitely going to buy it now. I don't know why this feature is omitted from every friggin phone or tablet-like device.
-
I preordered the Galaxy Player 5.0 from Amazon. I love the look of the device. Does anyone with Samsung experience know what to expect audio wise?
I have a Zune HD and Cowon J3 so i'm happy audio wise but the Galaxy Player looks stunning.
-
Couple questions:
2. Who compares with HTC in build quality?
3. Apart from HTC, who else has a good Android UI? -
Well I just want music player, video player, camera, web browsing, and basic PIM functionality. I love the 10" devices but just too big to carry around with me. Need something that I can stick in my pocket. That Galaxy Player 5.0 looks perfect. Now all I need are wireless earbuds and I'm golden (I hate cords).
-
That's what I need. The Galaxy 10.1 is a little too big to drag around for web browsing. But I still would like to know how the Samsung devices sound like. If they are weak audio wise, i'll just stick with my Cowon J3 and maybe get the Cowon iAudio 10 Player.
-
Try as I might, I can't forget about it.
The more I read about it, the more I want it.
I'm hoping Samsung makes the Galaxy Note on their UK mobile training site, that way I'll have the chance to try and win one. -
I'll be shot to death for this, but it sounds like an iPod touch is close to that...
-
No shooting here, thanks off to cancel my preorder.
-
What do you think the Galaxy 5.0 is?
It's the Android equivalent of the iPod Touch - a phone with the phone ripped out.
edit: Galaxy Note benchmarks.
Beats the Galaxy S2 in every benchmark except the graphics-related one.
GSMArena have called the Note a 'phoneblet', I personally feel 'phoblet' rolls off the tongue a bit better. -
Why can't mobile phone service providers let you have a full featured phone and just don't allow WWAN access? So stupid. Now I have to lug around two phones otherwise I'd just get a nice phone device like the Note. And to be honest I'd rather have the higher resolution.
-
You can get a T-Mobile smartphone and put a T-Mobile prepaid sim in it. They have a pay as you go plan and $15 unlimited texting, 5 cents a minute.
You can buy 24 hour web passes when you need them for $1.50. -
I have $10/mo unlimited voice and text on my sister's plan, and think I can activate web for a month for $10 if needed. Although I should be able to use the note with just wi-fi I would think?
Since I'm considering a new camera and some digital do-it-all-tablet-like-phone-pim-device, I guess I could take the $200 for the camera + $300 for device and get something better like the Note and use that as my camera. I just need snapshots and videos mainly of my kids. -
Except that chances are however it is that the networks detect you have a smartphone, the Note would set it off - it's basically a giant phone.
Also, the price could be a fair way over $500. -

H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Indeed, sir. But it's the best looking HTC handset in recent memory. Slim, with good accent colors, and a design that's not outlandish.
CONGRATS! Another GS2 user!
All of the straight Samsung devices have an FM tuner. It's the US carriers that take that feature out. The i9000 had it, the i9100 has it, the Galaxy Note has it... actually all of the Galaxy S devices and newer have FM transceivers, but not all of them have the functionality built into the kernel drivers. The Broadcom modules that Samsung uses all have FM transmit/receive as a function in addition to WiFi ABGN, though the A-band isn't used, except on the i9100.
The Galaxy Player 5.0 has the Hummingbird SoC, so you'll be getting the kick-a Wolfson DAC. I smell some Voodoo coming for that device...
The best phones for daylight visibility are the OEM's that bond their screen panels to the front glass. For instance, the Galaxy S i9000 only has a 4% reflectance rate. The iPhone and the Samsung Super-AMOLED devices will give you the best outdoor readability.
Build quality... that's an iffy one. Personally, I think the other OEM's are as good or better than HTC because of the details... like HTC makes a great "frame" for a device from one piece of aluminum, but Samsung does just as good with plastics. Samsung devices are incredibly durable, even though they're not metal. Motorola uses a metal sub-frame with a plastic upper-frame.
It's the details where HTC isn't that great... like the battery cover on the Desire HD. The fit and finish isn't very Lexus like. It's more Chevy like. Solid, but lacking in the details.
If it's not sold by the carrier they won't (and can't) force you into one plan or the other.
At least on AT&T anyway. I'm not sure about the others. -
Enlighten me please on the above because I really like the device but don't want something inferior to the J3 or Zune HD.
I'm spoiled audio wise with the Cowon J3 and Zune HD. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
The DAC included with Hummingbird is the Wolfson WM8994. It's probably the best DAC in a shipping mobile device, outside of the really high-end stuff. The Galaxy S2 is a step down from the OG Galaxy S in audio quality, actually... a big step down.
Voodoo is a developer written audio driver for the WM8994. Written by Supercurio, a guy that Anandtech now gets to provide audio insights for reviews. The man has done amazing work... audiophiles pick the Wolfson DAC's.
EDIT: Here's some info on Voodoo Sound v4... we're on Voodoo Sound v10 now.
http://supercurio.project-voodoo.org/audio/voodoo-sound/Nexus-S-Voodoo-sound-DAC-direct.htm -
Well, Android and TouchWiz have PIM built in (Android supplies the calendar, contacts, etc. and TouchWiz provides notes as well as refinements to the built in calendar, contacts, and email.) so you should be good to go on that front.
Plus there's more in the Android market.
I'm just glad the Galaxy Players are finally out here in the states...it's been a long time coming. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I. Know. Right. !
I've been waiting for them to release them somewhere other than France/Korea for a LONG time. -
So tying this up in bow for someone who doesn't have a lot of knowledge in audio. What will this device compare to in sound quality, an iPod Touch 4th gen, Zune HD, Cowon PMP?

Any android developer here?
I was developing a sudoku game and when I compile it, I keep on getting an error.
I am preety sure all the codes are correct and working fine in one of my fren's laptop.Attached Files:

To each their own.
I wouldn't say it's really any better or worse looking than any number of other HTC handsets.
It's only really the Incredible with the stupid battery cover that I'd say looks worse.
...the 2011 Xperia range.
The Reality Display that SE use features a 'zero air gap'.
Anyone here familiar with 'The Overcome Experience'? -
Yeah it is expensive. But if I just bought it alone not tied to any phone carrier it wouldn't matter. Although I think I'm sold on the Galaxy Player 5.0.
Does it come with a decent "To Do" program. I find that is omitted frequently from most devices and programs for some reason.
Oh and do you think something like the Galaxy Player would suffice for a decent snapshot camera? -
Ive heard there will be no Voodoo support for the GS2
Otherwise... Its benchmark obliterating time....
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Nope, no Wolfson = no Voodoo (for the time being). Plus the Yamaha DAC they used isn't properly shielded from EMI... lots of background noise.
...a personal build of mine... That's a REALLY nice AnTuTu score though.
That was on a single core Hummingbird powered Infuse though... so that shows you how messed up Quadrant is.
-
Ah, that sucks! I havent used it a real lot for music yet. I didnt notice any background noise when quickly using it the other day (maybe better sheilded in this variation?) but ill have to put it to the test and see what i hear.
Nice!
I used to get like <2400 on my Vibrant @1.2Ghz
Wow... thats sad
yeah it really is horrible, but everyone uses it anyway
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Could actually be. Since your version is using a completely different baseband configuration, they may have added more shielding. That would be nice!
Since they rebadged the Hummingbird to Exynos, they've made some small SoC changes... very small, but they do add a lot more performance for an A8 SoC. -
Oh wow i thought i was wishfully thinking
lol
Ill have to try it out tomorrrow with my earbuds/stereo and PowerAMP and see
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
LOL! Let us know what you find! I'm interested! -
So sound quality wise what can we expect the Galaxy Player to compete with? The iPod Touch, Zune HD or Cowon J3? or should I just wait for the PS Vita?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Well, I would say it would compete with the Z-HD or the Cowon J3. It definitely sounds better than an iPod Touch of any generation.
@AHL... How does your S-AMOLED+ look? I've actually come across some devices myself that have the yellowing on the left side. Those panels seem to be coming from a Chinese fab... where the newer panels are coming from a fab in Japan. The Japanese panels don't have any issues... -
Well if you say the Galaxy Player will sound as good as a Zune HD or Cowon i'll put my pre-order back in.
EDIT: forgot to ask is the 5" screen worth the extra $40?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
That one is highly subjective... it just depends on if you value a decent amount of screen real-estate. Since it's a media player first and foremost, I'd say yes... since you might be watching a tv show or something on it. -
The 5" has twice the battery life of the 4", so I'd say it's worth the $40:
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/gadgetreviews/samsung-galaxy-player-50-40-hit-stores-october-16/27649
" Aside from the difference in screen size, the Galaxy Player 5.0 and 4.0 are powered by different batteries so they also differ in price. The 5-incher makes use of the more powerful 2,500mAh battery so it will retail for $269, while the 4-inch Player uses the 1,200mAh one and is priced at $229. Otherwise, both they share the same specs."
--------------------------------------------------
If you pre-order from Amazon do they charge you right away or when the item ships? Also is 800x480 resolution decent for web browsing? -
Thanks re: the battery and NO Amazon charges only when the item ships, same goes for Newegg.
