Despite the fact that Apple have, at some point at least, used Wolfson DACs?
With regards to batteries, I just checked the Galaxy Note and it too has 2500mAh.
I think that settles it, I can't see any of the other handsets with HD screens having a battery that huge - the Galaxy S2 LTE HD is only something like 1850mAh.
-
-
I hope after the complaints that Samsung got from their Yamaha DAC, I hope they use the Wolfson in their Nexus Prime. Otherwise I'll be sad
-
Well, a while ago I ordered two cheap generic Android 2.2 resistive screen 7" tablets for ~ $90 each. They just came today. It's slow for sure, but it gets the job done. One is going to my niece for her 10th birthday soon. The other I may just sell for $50-60 and take the loss. But something fun to geek around with and can see how a faster version (i.e. Galaxy Player) will suffice just fine for web surfing and running basic apps. This one has 800x480 resolution and works fine for surfing, the Galaxy Player with same res should work fine too. It lacks a camera which I thought it had, but whatever. It also doesn't have access to the android market but it has a market with a decent amount of stuff. Unfortunately many are "adware". The YouTube app has adware on it, quite annoying. But at least I have an idea for what I'll be getting.
-
Oh boy.

Amazon Kindle Fire 7" Android with IPS panel $199:
Amazon Kindle Fire tablet unveiled: Android-based, 7-inch display, $199 price tag -- Engadget
" Itching for specs? How's about a 7-inch IPS (!) panel, Gorilla Glass coating, a dual-core CPU and a chassis that weighs 14.6 ounces. There's also access to things you'd expect to have access to: Android Appstore, Kindle books, magazines, etc. -- all stored for free via Amazon Cloud Storage. Per Jeff: "Delete it and get it back when you want." Oh, and Whispersync now works with movies and TV shows! "When you get home, switch to your big screen TV. Your movie will be right where you left it." While it's clearly Android underneath, the actual UI looks effectively nothing like it -- considering TechCrunch's intel that Amazon went and did its own thing without Google's blessing, we guess that makes some level of sense. Oh, and pre-orders are set to start today (but only for Americans... boo), with shipments heading out on November 15th." -
Looks good to me, no yellowing anywhere! Since mine is the newer 4.5" its probably made at the newer fab.
Though next to my Vibrant's regular SAMOLED, the SAMOLED+ definetly had better and brighter colors, and brighter period. But it seemed like the regular SAMOLED had better whites, despite the SAMOLED+ being brighter, it had a blueish tint. Might be the lack of Voodoo Color.

Not in their Touch line. Those have all been Cirrus Logic. The Nano used one at one point and the Classic did as well, and those have been reviewed as the best sounding of the bunch...
Cirrus Logic is what Apple uses in their Macbook/Macbook Pro line so I guess they're just buying large quantities for cheaper prices. -
I'm sure that's not right.
I'm sure it's more recently than that when they lost the contract, 'cos it was while my mate was working for Wolfson and that wasn't that long ago. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Yes, they lost the contract in 2009, I believe. But even then the Touch was using Cirrus Logic because that's what was used in the iPhone.
The Classic used Wolfson DAC's for a LONG time, until the contract ended....
EDIT: AFAIK... the Nano and the Shuffle have used a Wolfson DAC in the past, but it's been a while since.. -
I have a Classic and thought the sound was uninspiring.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
It was only 1st gen through 4/5th gen... I guess I should have stated the iPod Photo/Clickwheel/Video.
The Classic _now_ uses Cirrus Logic. -
How do I copy the Titanium Backup files off my Tab?
When I try and copy using Windows Explorer I get an error message and because the Tab is an MTP device, I can't use xcopy or robocopy. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Can you enable USB Debug mode and use it as a USB Mass Storage device? -
On the Tab if you enable USB Debugging it won't connect.
I have no idea why, I keep meaning to ask on XDA-devs.
It turns out it was the lockscreen cutting in and killing the connection. -

Hmm, maybe the new Galaxy Player will come with a tasty Ice Cream Sandwich.

I'll be honest, that looks tasty.

Wow. That's major fail on either Samsung's or Google's part. Major.
Come with... nah... upgradable? Certainly.
Consumer devices are always behind the WWAN enabled devices, which are always behind the Nexus devices. ICS will filter down to the Galaxy S devices by Feb-Mar of next year. Though you'll probably be able to get a leaked or community version before then. -
Well I decided to pre-order the Galaxy 5 since i'm returning my J3 due to battery issues. I've had to return three J3's back to Amazon for numerous problems. So even though they have stellar sound i'm going to try a Galaxy 5 and maybe as a backup I may get a Cowon X7.

Question on video playback. I have a Windows Home Server with lots of movies and music ripped and stored there. Is there a way to stream those movies to my Anroid handheld? I was just thinking transferring stuff like this would be a pain because I don't want to have to download a 2-4GB file for my HD stuff just to watch a movie. I'd like to just stream away.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Plex for Android, and just run the media server on the server itself. Streams literally any video format and down-mixes DTS and DD audio to stereo for mobile devices.
I bought the Android app a couple of days ago, and I love it.

Got a 16GB MicroSD (for only $15)
Combined with the ~13GB on the phone that gives me 29GB for my music

I love that Samsung understands that people want a decent amount of NAND on their devices... yet other companies are still churning out models that have like 1-2GB.
Sadpanda. -
Me too. I think its a great idea. I see my mom with her Nexus One running out of space on the phone needed to move stuff to the SD and im like... wow, i dont need to worry about that
Otherwise... This is awesome. I now have it

That was the simplest thing to set up even on my crappy Android wannabe. Thanks so much. +1!
I don't have access to the Android Market on my crappy Android tablet, but found an "alternative" for the time being. As soon as I get my new Android handheld, gonna be the first thing I buy. $4.99 well worth the price. Server is free though. Strange, but I'm fine with that! -

Please, please have ATT 3g bands at launch -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I saw that the other day and almost downloaded it...lol. Except I'd have to modify it for the Infuse.
No problemo sir. What I really love about Plex is that it's not just for local streaming. It can be used anywhere you have an internet connection... 3G/4G/China/ISS...
I've heard from a mole... that the next Nexus device will have a "one-size-fits-all" GSM/WCDMA baseband...
And no, not this mole...

What's the highest capacity micro SD card an Android phone can use? Or does it vary by device? I want to get the largest one I can and use my Triumph as my music player so I can ditch my ancient Zune that hasn't played through the left side of any headphone for years.
We're allowed to listen to music via headphones at my job, which is awesome because those 8 hours go by very slowly. I tried to use my phone to stream Pandora today, but there's almost no 3G coverage inside, so songs would take several minutes to load, and they'd randomly stop and start, and killed the crap out of my battery. From a fresh 100% charge at the beginning of my shift at 3:30, it was down below 50% before my 5:30 break. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume the battery won't be hit nearly as hard if I just have some music directly on the phone and disable 3G altogether. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Well, I've recently found out that SDXC cards will work in later model Snapdragon SoC's and Hummingbird/Exynos SoC's. But ATM, 32GB is the biggest microSD for sale.
You actually just missed a good sale on one the other day... onesaleaday had a Sandisk 32GB for $29.
EDIT: Ben's Outlet has one right now...
http://bensoutlet.com/products/sandisk-32gb
-
Dammit. >:/
So 32GB would be compatible with my Triumph? I have no idea what's inside it.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Yep. The 32GB microSD-HC is compatible with pretty much every single Android device that has a microSD slot.
BTW, you're running the Snapdragon MSM8655. Same SoC that's in the Thunderbolt, Desire HD, Xperia Arc, and a bunch more phones...
-
Thanks.
Does the card have to be any particular class? I'm seeing class 2 through 10 available. -
Don't you mean MSM8 255?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I would recommend class 4+. Class 10 wouldn't really be utilized unless you're recording in 1080p.
Nope. The CDMA version is always denoted by a 6. -
It better have att 3g bands, or I will be a sad panda
-
Which part?
Any idea if that's the same that the Galaxy Note is running?
Sandisk will sell you a 64GB microSDXC card for $220. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Debug mode not working is a major fail. That means that there's kernel issues 90% of the time.
It would be nice, but I'm not sure. *crosses fingers*
Ouch! I knew they were for sale, I just didn't know where. I would still like to see a phone with a dual slot microSD.

Hi people,
I have a few quick questions:
- Is an antivirus or similar (like norton mobile utilities or anti-virus free, for ex.) essential for Android/Samsung Galaxy S2?
- Is there any recommended/best contact manager or similar, with functions for easy backup of contacts? [similar questions has been posted by me in the Brighthand forums - Samsung Galaxy S2 - Kies Software - CDC Serial Error? ..I have other issues/doubts too, if you would like to take a look in that thread and let me know of any solution
]
Thanks a lot.. cheers. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Rule number one with Samsung devices... KIES is a no-no. It's really bad software.
It never seems to do what it's supposed to.
About backing up your contacts, you have several options...
- Google Sync backs them up OTA to your Google Account/Gmail Contacts
- You can use the Export feature in the Contacts app by pressing menu and selecting Import/Export contacts
- You can get an app from the market that makes a CSV file containing a backup of your contacts
As for the antivirus software... I would say no. If you use the Android Market or the Amazon Marketplace instead of shady appstores, then you have a VERY VERY small chance of downloading something malicious. Even if you happened to come across malware in the Android/Amazon Market, they will remote delete that app off your device when they detect that app is malicious.
Also, as a note to everyone.... Always read what permissions an app has over your device before you hit "Agree and Download"!
-
Maybe.
I've found myself a ROM/Kernel combination I want to try, so hopefully that'll fix it.
I hope so.
The more I look at the Note, the more I want it but it would be really annoying if it were relatively under-powered.
That would be nice, though using the Arc/Ray I'd settle for a large internal memory like Samsung put in their handsets. -
Thanks a lot, for your message.
I agree.. I used to use couple of other 'suites' when I had the Sony Ericsson and Nokia, and they were actually fine and nice.. I still use the Ovi Suite for Nokia with my 5230 and it's working well.
So, I thought I'll try the Kies software thing but I realize its really really bad
and considering how good the SGS2 is, Kies is on the opposite end!
- At the moment, I am using Google Sync and its working fine and I'm pretty happy with that. While we are at it, how good is the "back up my data" to google servers (under settings > privacy)?
- Under Import/Export, I only see the options to Export/Import to SIM card.. and for some reason, exporting to SIM card doesn't work and the export service crashes! I don't know if its because of too many contacts or too much info under the contacts or whatever!
- Do we need an app to make this CSV file for backing up the contacts? I mean, isn't there an option to backup the contacts to SD card, from within the phone settings? Anyway, I wouldn't mind having an app if it does the job. I have been searching in the Android Market for such an app.. do you have any that you'd recommend? Thanks
Thanks..
Understood
And I download apps ONLY from the Android Market, right now.. and yes, I am not downloading just any random app! I am getting only the known, proven, trusted, popular apps and according to my needs...
And I agree with your note
Thanks a lot once again. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I'm thinking the Note has an upclocked Exynos 4210, which probably comes with a small GPU upclock as well. As it stands though, the Mali400 should be WELL more than capable of throwing around 1280x800 pixels... especially judging by Anand's bench results.
The Exynos 4212 should have a healthy GPU overclock if it's still the Mali400, since they're claiming 50% better performance. 50% is quite a bit...
Yea, it's funny how awesome the GS2 is then you have KIES. Polar opposites.
The "Back up my data..." setting is VERY comprehensive. Say you migrate to the Nexus Prime when it comes out... when you go through initial setup and check the box to "restore this device from my Google Account" option, it will even bring back your wallpaper you had set on your other phone... settings, contacts, and browser bookmarks also get pushed/pulled from the cloud. The first time I actually used it, it surprised me at just how thorough it was. The only fly in the ointment is that you can only use the complete restore option on Nexus devices or with CyanogenMod. Contacts are always syncable though, no matter the phone or OEM.
Interesting... the import/export thing with Contacts is a bug. Even Samsung's customized version of Contacts, which is what's on the GS2, should have the option to backup to SD card. It's been in literally every Samsung ROM I've put together anyway...
You can try "GO Contacts" from the Market. It has a very nice Import/Export menu option. -
Thanks again..
Yes, I've enabled the 'back up my data...'...
For the import/export, yes, I've seen there is an option to export to sd card as mentioned in many other places as well (google search..), but I don't see it.
I will check out GO Contacts in a while..
thanks a lot. Cheers.
Btw, have you seen my other thread on the brighthand forums? And my questions? Anyway, I'll ask you here: For my contacts, I merged them with my google account and I don't see the contacts on 'my phone' anymore.. I mean, when I chose to display only the contacts on the phone, its all empty.. do you know how I can get the contacts back on the phone memory? Thanks again -
Well, as I say, I really hope the Note will have the Exynos 4212.
It would be mighty disappointing because I strongly suspect none of the other devices with HD screens will have 2500mAh batteries.
That said, if it is the 4210, at 1.4GHz it seems to be pretty damned powerful. -
I believe Ice Cream Sandwich's (and thus, probably the Nexus Prime's) preferred chip is going to be the TI OMAP.
-
I'm not so sure there will be a preferred CPU - I think Google has learnt a lesson from the Honeycomb/Tegra2 fiasco.
Also, if you look at MS and WP7, the lack of choice when it comes to hardware isn't doing them any favours.
edit: Nokia to turn mobile landscape on its head with 'Meltemi' smartphone OS

edit #2: and this is interesting. -
Virgin Mobile has two new Android phones coming out next month...the HTC Wildfire S and LG Optimus Slider.
HTC Wildfire S:
- Ships with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and HTC Sense
- 3.2" display
- 600MHz CPU (type not specified, but I'm guessing it's the same one that the Optimus V uses)
- 512MB internal RAM
- Available in white and silver (VM exclusive)
- Ships with Android 2.3 Gingerbread
- 3.2" display
- Slide-out QWERTY keyboard
-
I like the Wildfire S, it's actually a pretty lovely wee handset.
But I would never pay money for it. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
^Neither of them are ARMv7 devices. They're ARM11.
I wouldn't pay money for either of them... much less $200. The Triumph is a MUCH better phone. MUCH MUCH better phone.
