Unlocking wouldn't allow you to uninstall apps that are currently protected, you'd need to root.

That's what I should have said, i'm a n00b. Any good write ups?
-
If I were you, I'd start with these instructions.

TY sir

Just a quick question. Anyone have an opinion on Nexus vs. Note? One of these will be my next phone and completely unsure about which one to get. Both have compelling features. Love the screen size on the note. Better hardware as well. The nexus might have a few more features though, like with the camera, more support from google, and their docking feature. Any thoughts?
-
You just have to work it out for yourself.
As you say, both have their advantages, it's just a matter of working out which set of advantages best suit your individual needs. -
OK Step I went to that website downloaded the 2 files, installed driver and when I go to start the root it says device not found, rats.

Have you checked the box to put your phone in "debug mode"? -
Yes I did and unmounted the SD card per the KMS instructions.
What's weird is after installing the Samsung drivers I connected my phone and it installed the drivers. Per the Youtube video I was confused regarding the cmd prompt. When I went to type adb reboot I got the message that Windows did not find an internal or external command with adb in it.
So I had to run CMD in admin mode and I had to change to the KMS directory then I was making progress as the phone rebooted. Once it rebooted I went to double click on prevailtoexistence.bat and it tried to copy over some files but aborted saying it could not find busybox which i'm now downloading from the market. At that point is where I also got the message device not found.
EDIT: btw if this discussion is frowned upon I can take it to PM.

Do you have the superuser app on your handset?
Because BusyBox installer won't do anything unless you're already rooted AFAIK. -
Well, both will have 4.0, that's 100%.
The Nexus has a way better GPU, but the CPU is 200MHz better on the Note.
Amount of RAM seems to be lower on Nexus, according to a few leaks.
And in the end, it all comes down to the size and form factor. I don't know, but I like the Note better... it just feels quite executive, having a big phone in your hands
-
I would have to say NO since I have not heard of the app. You are correct about busybox. I followed the Youtube video you linked and tried to follow the directions per the video but what I saw on my end was not what was being shown.
If you don't mind, could you have a look at that video and see if you can figure out.
-
It's a foregone conclusion but I didn't think there'd been any official comment on the Note yet - it'll certainly only be shipping with Gingerbread.
But both of them should get awesome CM7 support, so it's a tie really.
That's not necessarily true about the GPU.
It's only the single-core SGX540, not the vastly superior 543MP that the iPhone 4S/iPad 2 have.
Have you seen the picture of the Note next to the Galaxy S2?
It's not big, it's frickin' enormous!
Rooting's different for different phones - I have all SEs, so I wouldn't really know where to start with a Samsung.
HAL is a much better person to ask, he owns/had owned a bunch of Samsungs ( not that that necessarily means he'll be intimately familiar with how to root your handset) and is generally awesome at stuff like this. -
Thank you step, phistachio and Hal. I do realize it's personal taste but they are so similar yet so different as well. I might just get the one that releases first.
-
Personally I'm leaning towards the Note.
The hardware is in my opinion as good as the Nexus, with a couple of points in it's favour too ( huge battery and a Wacom stylus - they know how to pull out all the stops do Samsung); the OS isn't as good but I'm banking on great community support.
As for release dates, the Note is out in Germany and will be out in a few other European countries this week, though I think the US is next year.
The Nexus on the other hand should be released pretty much simultaneously in more countries. -
I completely agree. I too, love samsung as well haha. I was hoping on the community support too. I'm actually having a hard time thinking of what to do, though. So close to just importing one for $700. Not sure if that's worth it though. My iphone 4 will cover almost half, however.
-
I wouldn't go so far to say I love Samsung but I respect the fact that they produce probably the best mobile phone hardware around and of course I want said hardware!
-
Haha, well I am willing to admit I am a little biased towards Samsung.
Do you think it's worth importing for $700, Step?
Edit: Because the way I see it, is that when it finally does come to the US, it will still be about around that price unlocked. -
That I really can't comment on - my plan is to try and find a way of getting one for free.
-
Yeah, I read about that. Just have a hard time paying that much for a phone. We will see. Thanks.
-
If I may ask Step666, if you were me; Would you buy a $300 Samsung Galaxy S II slightly used, or should I wait for the Galaxy Nexus (which I would pay twice the price, but would be new)?
-
I know I am not as knowledgeable as Step in regards to Android devices. I know a little, however. I would find it very hard to turn that offer down if it is in perfect condition. Especially with all the support for it, and one could guess it will get ICS early 2012. And you can't beat half price.
Edit: Forgot to mention, I'm pretty certain the hardware is about equal as well. -
I really don't know.
I've never bought a phone second hand, it's a far riskier prospect here in the UK due to the practice of blacklisting handsets that are reported lost or stolen. -
That's what I'm thinking. Plus if I can get $100 to $150 from my old vibrant, that makes it an even better deal.
There is no risk here, the phone belongs to my coworker! -
I say go for it, then. I've played around with it before. I do like that phone a lot.

If it belongs to your co-worker (and you know it's in great condition) then by all means get the SGSII! It's still better than the Galaxy Nexus IMO and it will get ICS by years end or around January. -
If I may, how is the SGS II better than the SGN?
-
Arguably the CPU is better, it has a higher-res camera and a memory card slot.
-
Megacharge Custom User Title
It was just my opinion, but as to why I think it's better, Step666 pretty much summed it up. -
AND, the SGSII has more RAM.
-

How much does the Nexus have? I thought it was also 1 GB. -
It says that, but I think others have said it has a little less. IIRC.
-
According to an Android dev (Supercurio or something), it would be 768MB.
I see, I did not know about the CPU. The camera is indeed very nice, and so is the SD card slot, there is no way I can live with a 16GB storage.
The screen resolution bothers me though.
This article is full of fallacies.. -
Megacharge Custom User Title
Don't let it, the screen on the SGSII is probably the nicest looking screen I've seen on a phone. IMO the color and quality of this screen negate it's lower resolution. -
About RAM, remember some is reserved all the time. My SGSII "has" 1GB but 836MB is usable. And believe me, ive never went anywhere near that
-
So if I were to get a Galaxy S II off eBay or somewhere, would I have to get an unlocked version, or would the T-Mobile version work with the T-Mobile pre-pay plan?
-
Both handsets have 1GB.
The fact that the amount that is user-accessible differs means very little - if/when the Galaxy S2 gets ICS, it could have even less free RAM than the Nexus for all we know. -
I wish we could get some more information about the Galaxy Nexus. They announced it weeks ago and there's been almost no new information, nor a US release date announcement.
-
I ordered the Galaxy Note. Should be here in a couple weeks if I'm on the first batch.
-
Dang, AT&T just announced another Galaxy S II, the Skyrocket. The difference between this and one they just released is it also supports LTE and has a bigger screen.
Fragmentation within the same model by the same carrier within a month has to be some sort of record right? -
The release date was said to be the second week of November. You can find pretty much all the harware info on engsdget's article "Behind the glass".
Congrats! How much did you pay?! -
^ Embarrassed to say, probably too much. $712 with two day shipping. Sold my iPhone for $300 though. It'll be nice having a phone many don't though, I suppose.
-
Well, the "second week of November" in an Engadget post carries much less weight than Verizon saying "hey guys we're selling it on the 10th". That's really what I'm looking for. Something concrete.
-
Now your talking.
That's what I say to 95% of my coworkers (they ALL have an Iphone 4/4S).
Be sure to tell us your impressions once you get it.
@Hockeymass; True that, but it does not surprise me coming from a wireless provider
-
Will do. Thanks for the support! Haha.
-
Hehe, I am getting my SGS2 later today, can hardly wait.
-
Nice! AT&T now has a 4.5" SGSII
I wonder if the 1.5Ghz is the same as the T-Mobile's (Snapdragon) or is an overclocked Exynos like the Epic 4G Touch?
The T-Mobile version would work on a T-Mobile prepaid plan, yes
You can use anything with a sim card you want on the prepaid plan. (though remember it must have T-Mo 3G bands unless you want 2G)
-
Nice!
I'm sure it'll be worth every single cent
-
The SGS2 is pretty amazing, the screen is indeed gorgeous.
The phone is neat, besides few crashes on the corners. But for the price I pay it is more than tolerable. -
Read it's based on Snapdragon, but hopefully it's Exynos...
