For those who don't know the difference, say your friends replaces their carpet every ten years at a cost of a thousand dollars. Nine years in, you spill red wine and ruin the carpet. Have you done a hundred dollars of damage, or a thousand dollars of damage? American courts say a hundred. Samsung offered a hundred.Last edited: Oct 28, 2016katalin_2003, hmscott and Tinderbox (UK) like this. -

Now the Note 7 is dead, is there any hint for any future product from Samsung or some other vendor that is a high-end consumer phone with a proper stylus?

Until then, US consumers who need styluses will probably have to make due with the Note 5.Mr.Koala likes this. -

Sorry, but one out of millions is not anything to worry about. If that were the case I'm sure you'd find at least a handful of other phone manufacturers that burned up.

Samsung will finally explain what happened to the Galaxy Note 7
By Chris Smith on Nov 29, 2016 at 2:57 PM
https://bgr.com/2016/11/29/galaxy-note-7-explosions-explanation/
"Samsung launched a new round of investigations on November 11th, The Korea Herald explains, together with product safety authorities and experts from Korea and the US. According to industry sources, the final results of Samsung’s probe will be announced by the end of the year.
The sources said the reuse of the returned phones is also dependent on the investigation’s results. One rumor said that Samsung may consider selling refurbished Galaxy Note 7 units once it fixes them for good.
The Herald says that Samsung sold some 4.3 million Galaxy Note 7 phones since its launch in August."HTWingNut likes this. -

Samsung may permanently disable Galaxy Note 7 phones in the US as soon as next week
by Jacob Kastrenakes Dec 8, 2016, 5:20pm EST
http://www.theverge.com/2016/12/8/1...-7-permanently-disabled-no-charging-us-update
"Samsung appears to be planning to permanently disable Galaxy Note 7 units in the US with an update that would prevent the recalled phone from charging.
According to an image obtained by The Verge, an alert went out to at least one Note 7 owner on US Cellular today stating that, “As of December 15th, Samsung will modify the software to prevent the Galaxy Note 7 from charging. The phone will no longer work.”
Samsung declined to comment, and US Cellular did not respond to a request for comment." -

I doubt Samsung will issue refurbs of the Note 7, we are too close to the Note 8 / Samsung 8 series for Samsung to resurrect that problematic battery / charging design / implementation. -
Troll Causes Panic On Virgin America Flight By Naming Wi-Fi Hotspot ‘Galaxy Note 7’
http://hothardware.com/news/troll-causes-panic-virgin-america-flight-galaxy-note-7-wi-fi-ssid
"A passenger on board Virgin America flight 358 from San Francisco to Boston must have thought that airlines would not take the ban too seriously. Whatever his excuse, he exercised poor judgement when he decided to name the SSID on his device "Samsung Galaxy Note7_1097," which caught the attention of other passengers and the flight's crew.
After being notified of the situation, the captain of the plane asked that any passenger with a Galaxy Note 7 to press their call button. Nobody did. A message over the flight's intercom let the passengers know that the request was not a joke, and that if nobody stepps forward, everyone's bag will be searched until the phone is found.
"This is the captain speaking. Apparently the plane is going to have to get diverted and searched if nobody fesses up soon," the captain added."killkenny1 likes this. -
Aggressive design caused Samsung Galaxy Note 7 battery explosions
December 2, 2016 by Anna Shedletsky
https://www.instrumental.ai/blog/20...used-samsung-galaxy-note-7-battery-explosions
" Instrumental technology helps hardware companies find and fix manufacturing issues. Our inspection equipment collects high-resolution images and other data about units during assembly, and our software maximizes engineering efficiency with inspection, comparison, and measurement tools."
"In September, the first reports of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 batteries exploding hit social media. At first, Samsung identified the issue as one relating to the lithium polymer battery manufacturing process by Samsung SDI, where too much tension was used in manufacturing, and offered to repair affected phones. But several weeks later, some of the batteries in those replacement units also exploded once they were in the hands of customers -- causing Samsung to make the bold decision to not only recall everything, but to cancel the entire product line.
This is every battery engineer’s nightmare. As hardware engineers ourselves, Sam and I followed the story closely. Different sources at Samsung reported different reasons for why the batteries shorted: tension in the cell fabrication, squeezing the layers too much during processing, poorly positioned insulation tape, etc. These theories all suggest a battery part-level issue, likely due to Samsung pushing the manufacturing parameters a little too far in order to make the highest capacity battery in the smallest package. But, if it was only a battery part issue and could have been salvaged by a re-spin of the battery, why cancel the product line and cede several quarters of revenue to competitors? We believe that there was more in play: that there was a fundamental problem with the design of the phone itself...."HTWingNut likes this. -
Beyond the Teardown
How we think about failure analysis, Samsung Galaxy Note 7 edition
December 12, 2016 by Anna Shedletsky
https://www.instrumental.ai/blog/2016/12/beyond-the-teardown-galaxy-note-7
"... What that leaves…
At this point, we’ve inspected and quickly eliminated six potential root causes using images we captured with our instrumental system. In the real world, that could be six investigations or experiments saved from the comfort of an engineer’s desk. And for our teardown, that left a couple last hypotheses to investigate by hand.
Potential Root Cause #1: Battery does not have room to swell, putting pressure on the battery
Batteries swell over time with normal use, and therefore the mechanical design needs extra “ceiling space” to accommodate a thicker, swollen battery. As product design engineers, we call this thickness direction “Z” (where “X” and “Y” are oriented along the width and length of the device accordingly). A conservative rule of thumb for battery swell is 10% of the battery’s thickness, though many battery vendors pride themselves on designs that swell only 7% or 8%.
In order to understand how much space was available in Z, we did a “Z-stack exercise” to identify and measure all of the components that contribute to this critical stackup in the product. Take a look at the diagram -- which is also explained in the bullet points below.
TL;DR - battery compartment isn't large enough to contain battery swell over time. 0.00mm gap leaves no room for battery swell, battery under pressure caused battery compression and failure between insulating layers. -
So the take away message is the "my phone is 0.5mm thinner than yours" madness claimed another victim in a spectacular way?

FAA lifts airline notification on Galaxy Note7
Samsung Newsroom 01.10.17
"The U.S. Department of Transportation’s decision today to remove the requirement for the airlines to make specific pre-boarding notification reflects the exceptionally high rates of participation in the U.S. Note7 Refund and Exchange Program.
By leveraging our digital technology to target each device, we’ve had over 96 percent of Galaxy Note7 phones returned to date.
Together with our wireless carriers, we have taken aggressive action to limit the remaining phones’ ability to work as mobile devices, further enhancing participation in the recall. We thank the Department of Transportation, airlines, airports, our partners and Note7 owners for their patience and support during this time."

Samsung Electronics probe finds battery was main cause of Note 7 fires
Sun Jan 15, 2017 | 10:03pm EST
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-samsung-elec-smartphones-idUSKBN150019
"By Se Young Lee | SEOUL
A Samsung Electronics Co Ltd ( 005930.KS) investigation into what caused some Galaxy Note 7 smartphones to catch fire has concluded that the battery was the main reason, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday.
The world's biggest smartphone maker is seeking to put behind it one of the biggest product safety failures in tech history as it prepares to launch the Galaxy S8, one of its flagship phones, sometime in the first half of this year.
Investors and analysts say it is critical for Samsung to provide a convincing and detailed explanation about what went wrong with the Note 7 and how it will prevent such problems from recurring if it is to regain consumer trust.
"They've got to make sure they come clean and they've got to reassure buyers as to why this won't happen again," said Bryan Ma, Singapore-based analyst for researcher IDC.
The results of the investigation will likely be announced on Jan. 23, a day before it announces detailed fourth-quarter earnings results, said the person, who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter and declined to be identified.
Koh Dong-jin, head of Samsung's mobile business, will likely announce the results as well as new measures the firm is taking to prevent similar problems in future devices, the person said." -
Samsung haven't fixed the problem, in fact I think Samsung is right *and* the other research team is right too - the case is too restrictive to allow for battery swell failures.
Samsung needs to put more work into a solution, and refit the Note 7's with a new body to "fix the problem".
Until Samsung implements a fix and field tests it for success, there isn't anything to recommend for purchase.
Samsung is supposed to announce something about this on Jan 23rd...Last edited: Jan 20, 2017 -

Toward the end of the presentation now, and it's clear there were manufacturing defects with 2 independent battery manufacturers with 2 different sets of failure causing defects (more than one issue per set) with both batteries - Identified as Company/Battery A and Company/Battery B.
Both of these batteries had defects that showed up quickly in the field - and although not run to term some of those faults also found could have caused failures during the life of the battery outside initial failures that caused the recall and cancellation of the Note 7.
The other earlier examination and conclusion that Samsung didn't allow enough room in the battery bay for "expansion" or "swelling" of the battery is borne out in this screen shot I took during the presentation - see the right hand lower bubble that says " Ensuring sufficient space for battery and new brackets for protection" - start viewing at 1:18:45:
So, battery manufacturing defects causing early failure in the field with potential long term failures due to additional and combined effects of the defects.
Please watch the detailed presentations of Samsung and the 3 independent analysis firms that did amazingly expansive investigations, all good comprehensive work that will contribute to battery design, production, and safety industry-wide.
Samsung is making their findings and research results available to all of the industry to improve overall safety and performance.

"LOS ANGELES — Samsung has pulled its notorious Galaxy Note 7 phone out of mothballs for sale as refurbished models or for rental.
The Note 7 models will not be sold in the United States, and in the countries where Samsung will offer it, the old Note 7 models will be under a different name, according to Samsung."
...
"Activist group Greenpeace had campaigned to get Samsung to recycle the remaining stockpile of Note 7 phones that were pulled off the market, and took Samsung's recycling announcement as a win.
"Tonnes of precious raw materials go into making throwaway electronics that are impossible to repair and purposefully designed not to last, leading to millions of gadgets being bought and thrown away as e-waste every year," Greenpeace's Jude Lee wrote in a blog post.
Samsung is expected to introduced the Galaxy S8 Wednesday, the latest iteration of the Galaxy phone, the line that has emerged as the No. 2 best-selling phone brand to Apple's iPhone.
Tim Bajarin, an analyst with Creative Strategies says it's "questionable," how successful Samsung will be moving the excess phones, but "if they've corrected the problem, there's no reason not to sell it."
He expects to see the Note 7 sold in emerging markets like Africa and South America countries, and that it would just be "too controversial" to sell here or in South Korea."
