" Just now got this. I can try and slow him down if we think it will matter, or we just let him do what he keeps threatening to do and see if he does it"
It looks like that Samsung is taking the whole Ford Pinto "let them burn" approach.

Verizon will also stop issuing replacement Galaxy Note 7 phones
    by Jordan Golson @jlgolson Oct 10, 2016, 12:42a

    http://www.theverge.com/2016/10/10/13223972/verizon-samsung-galaxy-note-7-stop-sale-recall

"Verizon announced late tonight that it would no longer offer replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones to its customers, joining fellow US carriers T-Mobile and AT&T, and other carriers around the world in halting sales of the device."

"Verizon’s decision comes after it was reported earlier tonight that Samsung was halting production of new Note 7 phones while the investigation is ongoing.

At least five replacement Note 7 phones caught fire in the US alone this week, and federal regulators with the Consumer Product Safety Commission are working to investigate the incidents."

Samsung said they checked the China factory and did not find a problem with the battery, Most manufactures have at least 2 sources for every components in case of shortage, so are the replacement battery`s from the same manufacture?

Samsung's battery are made by Samsung SDI (Korea) and ATL (China), they tried to blame it on ATL initially but the ATL equipped handsets didn't have "IED mode", so they back peddled pretty quickly.
Since Samsung is now solely sourcing batteries from ATL, I'd imagine that ATL probably can't produce them fast enough. I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung decided to use some SDI batteries that are labelled as "good" and here we are going through the same thing again.

It`s a really bad time for this to be happening with Christmas only 2 and a bit month`s alway and that is when Samsung would have made most of it`s money on the N7.

I'd personally take the S7 Edge over the Pixel for the microSD expansion (and there's currently a promotion where Samsung gives a 256gb microSD card to every S7 Edge purchaser), the waterproofing, the front-mounted fingerprint reader, the always-on display, and the more compact physical dimensions.

The S7 Edge has been a great phone so far.

Not to mention the almost 3 days battery time for light use and running on basic power saver mode + non-rooted Greenify.

So far it's been my 2nd favorite phone (behind the Sony Xperia Z Ultra) with the #1 performance.

My only concern would be the timing of purchasing now, given the newer ones might be made with Samsung batteries from their failed battery QC manufacturing runs.

Besides the screen size, S7 5.1" vs 5.5" for the S7 Edge, the only real spec difference between the Galaxy S7 and the S7 Edge is battery capacity.

The Galaxy S7 has a 3,000mAh battery, while the Galaxy S7 Edge has a 3,600mAh pack.

Which is better, the Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge?

Screen size and the Edge screen features and battery size. Otherwise they're identical. Same screen resolution, processor, memory, camera, etc.

On that last point, it's important to note that the S7 Edge and Note 7 do not use the same battery.

So i wonder what is going to happen to all the returned N7`s are they all going to end up getting all the parts apart from the battery getting stripped to go into other Samsung phones/tablets

I wonder what the value of an unexploded N7 will be now that no more will be made, it`s a bit of a risk but some people are drawn to things like that.

I wonder if someone dropped a decimal point. $1.7 billion sounds like the right ballpark given the number of units recalled and the price per unit.

Recalls cost money beyond what the actual device sells for. Not to mention that they have to set a sizable amount to settle with the numerous incoming lawsuits from destoryed property and personal injury and whatnot.

If you do get the S7 Edge, be sure and get a case that lets you have surfaces between your hand and the Edge of the screen for a hold that doesn't transfer input to the screen.

It is a pain to get used to the right hold to avoid triggering Edge operations, but after you get used to it it's not so bad.

This is the one I use; check out how the side clear plastic runners cover the edge so you can get a grip without triggering any Edge operations.

So apparently that $17 billion was the expected gross income from Note 7 sales during the lifetime of the device. Not the same as the cost of instituting the recall.

It'll cost them more than $17 Billion, that's almost guaranteed. These incidents have significantly damaged the name of Samsung, Galaxy and Note, which will take considerable time and money to repair, if they can be repaired at all. I've flew 6 times in the 3 weeks or so, I've never heard different airlines toss one specific device to the curb so consistently. I've even heard one KLM crew ask everyone during boarding what their phone was.

Samsung to permanently end production of Galaxy Note 7 phone
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolo...-note-7-owners-to-turn-off-devices-and-stops/

"Samsung has announced that it will permanently discontinue its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone after multiple reports of the devices exploding and catching fire.

The Korean company said on Tuesday that it would stop production of the £739 phones. It came after it urged owners to shut them off and halted production.

Samsung had been hit by dozens of reports of its flagship device, a crucial rival to the iPhone, overheating due to battery faults, and in several instances catching fire and exploding."

"The fault forced Samsung into an embarrassing recall a month ago, forcing it to replace millions of Note 7’s at exorbitant cost. But in recent days it has emerged that several of the replacement phones also caught fire.

Samsung said on Monday it had halted production amid an investigation, and on Tuesday urged customers to shut down their phones and for networks to stop sales.

After mounting pressure, it has now agreed to permanently stop making the device. Pulling it completely is unprecedented from a major manufacturer.

Several mobile networks, including those in the UK, said they had stopped giving customers new devices on Monday and Samsung said it had suspended production.

On Tuesday morning the company said: “Because consumers’ safety remains our top priority, Samsung will ask all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note7 while the investigation is taking place.

“Consumers with either an original Galaxy Note 7 or replacement Galaxy Note 7 device should power down and stop using the device and take advantage of the remedies available.”"

Yup, time to end this chapter and move on as a company. Shame, because except for this one defect, the Note 7 was an absurdly good phone, and pretty unique on the market as well. Everyone from Marques Brownlee to The Verge had absolutely fawned over it.

Well, I doubt those components could be used in a phone sold as "new". However....

    (1) Strip them of their Snapdragon 820s, RAM, and camera modules.

    (2) Warehouse those items until people start turning in Galaxy S7 and S7 Edges for refurbishing and resale.

    (3) In 2017 and 2018, sell metric tons of refurbished S7 and S7 Edges.

I hate Verizon. I'm on my sister's plan. But it won't let me change my shipping address name to my name. I remember I jumped through hoops when I ordered my Note 7 from Verizon online and it was a pain the butt. Can't reach anyone on a Saturday night either by phone to get it resolved.

I jumped from Verizon to US Cellular a few years ago and I absolutely love the customer service. Night and day difference. How is US Cellular's coverage near you? It's second to none in rural Oregon but I know there are some parts of the country where it's just terrible.

Finally got it sorted. Spent over an hour and a half on the phone with Verizon, but in the end, got my accessories credited that I bought with my Note 7, and got an S7 edge for effectively $175 with two year plan. The rep that helped me was great though. She was persistent with her managers and co-workers to make sure everything was taken care of. I have another week with my explodaphone, since S7 edge's are on back order, probably because of recall. I just hope the S7 edge screen is as nice as the note's.

Samsung should bring back user replaceable battery`s, I would sacrifice a bit of weight and size for the ease being able to quickly replace an empty battery with a full one, And not having to replace an entire phone would have save Samsung billions.

Yeah. But people want everything in their phone including thin, light, water tight, and indestructible. Hard to do with a removable battery. Having difficult to replace/access batteries keep people coming back for new phones every couple of years.

If you compare the Samsung S7 to the ancient Samsung S3 there is very little difference in the size and weight and you can replace the battery on the S3

So i cannot see having a removable battery adding that much size or weight.

It`s in the manufactures interest to have an non user replaceable battery as it means most people will have to replace their phones when the battery dies in 2-3 years and will get an new phone rather than having to send the phone away to have the battery replaced and who know what that would cost.

Though the S7 has an battery 42% larger than the one in the S3

Cause of Galaxy Note 7 overheating reportedly still a mystery
Investigation into Samsung is delaying development of the Galaxy S8, the Wall Street Journal reports.
    https://www.cnet.com/news/cause-of-galaxy-note-7-overheating-reportedly-still-a-mystery/

"Nearly two months after Samsung announced a global recall of its new Galaxy Note 7, the electronics giant reportedly still doesn't know what is causing some phones to overheat and catch fire. And that mystery is delaying development of the Galaxy S8, its next flagship phone, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.

Samsung did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but a spokeswoman for the company told the newspaper that it is still searching for the cause of the phones overheating.

"We recognized that we did not correctly identify the issue the first time and remain committed to finding the root cause," she said. "Our top priority remains the safety of our customers and retrieving 100 percent of the Galaxy Note 7 devices in the market."

The effort to solve that mystery is now having an affect on the S8, according to the Journal. Development of the S8 has been delayed by two weeks as engineers try to determine the cause of the Note 7's overheating issues, a member of the S8 development team told the Journal."

I read that Samsung did their own battery testing on the N7, when other company's get a battery testing company to do the work.

I also read that Samsung might use an non Samsung battery in their next device and have the testing done externally so they are covered, Also to get public confidence back i would assume.

But i also read that there might have been a faulty with the charging circuit on the pcb, which is why the N7 got totally scrapped.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 price, specs, features: Samsung will cap Note 7 batteries at 60% charge

    http://www.itpro.co.uk/android/2662...tures-samsung-will-cap-note-7-batteries-at-60

I would have though they would just have sent a kill  signal like they do with stolen phones, though i bet there are a lot in countries where there are very poor consumer laws and you will get no refund and you end up totally out of pocket.

That 60% charge thing was already done weeks ago, early on. Are they doing it again, or expanding the coverage of the patch - forcing it?

I don't know if that 60% fix is enough... I guess we / they will find out over time.

There are a lot more videos up than the original now:

This potential charging design issue is why I am not sure the 60% limit will be enough.

Remote-bricking the devices would subject lawsuits from every user who claims that there were irreplaceable family photos or crucial business information on their phones, and they would have transferred those documents to another phone, they just hadn't had the chance yet.

Intentionally bricking dangerous phones is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" thing. Hobbling but not bricking them is far preferable from a liability perspective.

Maybe 20% battery, and a notice that can't be closed to not use this phone and to return it as soon as possible would be better? 60% battery leaves a lot of play time.

That way the user can backup their stuff, and use the phone long enough to power it off.
