I mentioned in a couple of other threads about the temps my card is giving out but never as hot as this.
105 degrees celsius after an hour and thirty minutes on Crysis and this is the HWmonitor max recorded temp for the 9700m GTS in my new Qosmio x300!
These temps are insane for this type of notebook. Ill be lucky to have this a month, Are there any mods to the cooling i can do? or are these normal for this card?
Just worried for the life of this notebook as i have just got it.
-
return it and get a refund?
-
dude, this is extreme overheating, and i mean absolutely extreme. mine doesnt go above 68 celsius. i would return it man. try contacting toshiba about this issue, 105 celsius is 221 farenheit. this is insane and above boiling temps. this is serious.
-
sounds like your machine is too new to be dirty, but my dual 8600m gt's were hitting 105 (and shutting down the machine) after only a few months of use. After a thorough vacuuming, blowing (with compressed air), and more vacuuming, they dropped 30 degrees idle and load.
-
Toshiba europe has just told me on the phone that these temperatures are ok and within the tolerances of the chip?!! They also said I have a years warranty and they will replace it if it fails.
I think ill see what the store i bought it from has to say about it and ask about returns, It hasnt showed any signs of giving up and has been totally stable. -
They could be right, I used to have a desktop ATI X1950XT video card that after hard gaming would get up to 115C degrees !!! But if it is under warranty then you should be covered. God Bless -
-
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
but anyways, i think its a defect. i can play crysis for 2 hours, and it doesnt go over 65 degrees. i also have an x300.
i once hit 80 degrees when playing grid for 1/2 hr, but it wasnt getting enough air underneath the laptop.
so if you still have a few days to return it, i would. its too much of a hassle to get it repaired. -
usually the 1st component gives out due to overheating is motherboard.
mobo dies slwoly when temp constantly over 70c. -
The card is about 2 years old and still working and it is an AGPI recently upgraded my desktop from a AMD Socket A / AGP to a Intel Quad Core / PCI-E
God Bless

The GPU might be able to handle those temps, but as stated, this will probably end up cutting the life of the motherboard and the GPU by quite a bit.
I would absolutely be exchanging it for another if it is still new. This is not acceptable. If they insist this is normal and will not exchange, make sure you pick up the extended warranty that will cover this kind of damage. Then when you call them back in a couple of years (if that) will will be laughing when they buy you a new laptop. -
An update for you guys: Went to the store i bought it from this morning and they had a display model qosmio x300 that was playing a demo game, I mentioned to somebody about mine overheating and asked about returns so they tested the display model for temperatures while i was there, guess what? exactly the same 100- 105C at load. So I guess this is the temperature of all european X300s!
Looks like i bought a huge door stop come 2 months time. -
hey try using Dox's 178.24 gpu driver. I notice that it controls the fans and temps on my x305 at different levels compared to the Toshiba released drivers. Here's the link http://laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=21250. If you decide to try it create a restore point before you proceed then just uninstall the old drivers and install Dox's customized one. Don't run driver sweeper. Then let me know how it turned out.
-
what do you mean it controls the fans? can you manually adjust the speeds? how does it work?
-
-
Oh ok, not bad. However system restore is not my friend. My Norton 360 gets screwed up, my Memeo backup gets screwed, and a few other programs sometimes too. So I don't really want to take the chance. I've been pretty happy with what I have now. If anyone can post a score higher than mine in 3dmark 06 with relatively the same specs, then maybe I'll switch.

tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
thats also with a 2.4 GHz processor, but thats still amazing for a 9700M GTS. im afraid to do that to mine, as itll probably cut the life alot.
-
Yeah, that is with a 2.4ghz processor and its only about 300 more. I will try to post a higher score. Give me till the end of the day.
-
If you guys really want to increase your gaming performance without jeapordizing your notebook I highly recommend upgrading your drivers to Dox's 178.24 customized forceware.
Infact, I am so pleased with the results in Call of Duty 4, Bioshock, Gears of War and even the Crysis Demo, that I insist every x305 owner update to this driver!
In my estimate it gives at least 20% increase in performance, framerate wise and processing textures, over the latest and greatest official Toshiba gpu drivers. Imagine what it would boost your overclock scores if that's all that matters is getting very high bench marks.
Hmm come to think of it I wanna try, but Dude's overclocks seem pretty high to me and I'm not so courageous overclocking. Can someone give these drivers a shot at an overclock I'm pretty sure with the rate both yall going, it'll hit the 9000 mark. -
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
im gonna give it a try, with a restore point made of course.
-
The scores i posted were with those drivers you mentioned.
I used laptopvideo2go drivers before that and they did not get as high as these, They do seem decent but i notice a lot of stutter at certain points of games that were not there before -
-
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
well im gonna give it a try and see what happens, if its bad, or any problems at all, im gonna restore it back.
-
Can you tell me what game maybe I have it and can observe if it does on my system. -
Just found out Dox has 180.43 customized beta, I'll download and give it a try although I'm loving my setup right now and 180.43 is beta so kinda hesitant. maybe just download to desktop for now.
-
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
alright, let us know.
i installed the 178.24 drivers and just played cod4.
it does make a little difference when i max it out. before i wouldnt go below 30fps and wouldnt go over 40 outdoors(indoors around 50) with the drivers, i can go above 40, but it goes below 30 in some parts, sometimes as low as 22fps.
i didnt use any programs to measure the fps (as i cant download 3d06) but its not that big of a difference in terms of performance. it just spikes up a few extra fps every odd time.
i did notice that my gpu temps are lower, which is weird. my cpu temp is hotter though, almost hitting 70 c.
my gpu now is at 27c (80f)!!!! it never went below 40 before. -
How is your GPU so cool? Its really almost impossible for a laptop with a 9700M GTS.
-
Close to 8426. I don't think I can get any higher with what I have. I went 703/1004/1805. If I go higher, the display driver kicks out and everything freezes for a minute, then it seriously downclocks the GPU.
Don't forget that I have a 2.0GHz CPU! -
And to update you guys on the 180.43 I haven't installed yet read the laptopvid2go forums and seems like it gives less points in 3dm6 although Dox's customized beats the original which is the case with his 178.24. And Also E-wrecked has been advocating xfastest 177.85. I haven't tried those maybe I'll download those to desktop to. -
In Vista, Dox's driver gave me a whopping "9" points, from 7184 to 7193. Bad news is, in XP I was getting 8400!
I really do like some of the Vista features, but losing 15% of my graphics performance makes it a high price to pay -
An update to this overheating issue i have,
I have just bought myself an external extraction usb fan that clips onto the red grill at the back of the laptop to suck air out from the left hand side (looking from the back) and what a major improvement. There is almost a 20C difference in temperatures with this thing!
Going from 96C non-overclocked without it attached to 75-80 when i clip it on the back!
It would appear Toshiba should of added an extra fan on this thing on the other side of the heatsink to keep temps in check. -
-
BTW. Does the US x305's fan run at full when gaming? I noticed the European one does not run at 100% like it does when you first turn on the machine for a second or so or when you flash the bios -
my X205's fan NEVER runs at full speed.....like during a bios update like you mention. I've always wondered about that, as there are certainly times I could deal with the noise to gain more overclocking ability!
-
my 9700m gts in the qosmio f55 would always stay under 85 degrees full load but now it's hitting up to 89 degrees. Heh....toshiba failed on cooling i guess
-
Sorry to bring back an old thread,
I have decided to take the plunge and scrap my warranty to fix my problem. I took the whole thing apart last night to apply some arctic silver 5 on the GPU core.
What i saw when taking off the heatsink was a mass of thermal paste, Far too much on the core. I dont know how it passed QC standards.
Anyway on applying a thin layer of AS5 to the core and putting it back together i have successfully managed to reduce my full load temps,
The GPU has now been running furmark for 3 hours and the temperature is sitting on 80C/175F at 700/1700/950 clocks.
Is this what most other people are getting now on there x305 9700m GTS? -
You voided your warranty?
-
I will take a chance that nothing will go wrong in the next 10 months. *fingers crossed* -
You can NOT void your warranty just by opening your laptop. They have to prove that what you did caused the laptop to fail. For instance if you take apart your laptop and AS5 on the CPU and months later the speaker died. They will have to prove that what you did caused the speaker to fail. I hope this helps. God Bless -
Thanks for the info on that.
-
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
80c??? mine only gets max 65c and i didnt do anything. i can be playing cod4 for 5hrs straight, with cpuid in the background and max temps show 65. this is withOUT a cooler. on a cooler it doesnt go over 50. -
Games are not as intensive as Furmark it would seem, Try yours on that app and see what it reports. -
im gonna talk toshiba 2morow....
i have the x300 and seen your other posts mike...
i cant game i reach also temps over 100 and my 9700m is idle 72 degrees. and we all know this aint good and if my machine shuts down after 3minutes while trying to play a game then def something is wrong...
i also readed on the web that they took the x300 models out of the market in some countrys cause of this overheating issue .. i bought this machine just b4 xmass and toshiba aint gonna walk away with this..besides of that. i bought this machine cause my other machine was overheating.. with amd proccesors .. this is a gaming machine and costs way to much money to get those tempratures and we all know that -
Well you already know about mine. 10348 3DMark06 score, and I just got a screenshot of my latest bench. I use the DOXOptimized 181.20 Nvidia drivers. I noticed that the temps in relation to the fan activity is acceptable now that I updated the drivers to other than the Toshiba ones.

hmmm so if i put an x9100 in my notebook i could eclipse 12,000?
You have an impressive score there my friend
Also 105 is insane maybe you are putting the settings in some games way too high? -
-
I just sent in my laptop for overheating issues and my mainboard/gfx card was replaced and my temps are still hitting 90 degrees during gaming, 55 degrees idle. What should i do?
-
Get the NZXT Cryo LX from newegg for $55.
