Replacing laptop hinges is the most time consuming repair. You have to take the whole thing apart, including the display assembly. I do not remember 1405 off the top of my head, they all look the same to me now.![]()
When you take apart over 50 laptops a week, you do not remember them anymore. But they all kind of similar. Just read through a few disassembly guides, and you'll get an idea. Mark all screws during disassembly. I'm still using my cups to separate screws layer by layer during disassembly.

Thanks for any help -
Anyone knows how to disassemble a p105-s921? I just spent 2 hours trying to detach the DVD but couldn't manage. I want to see the guts and check out building quality.

Haven't been on for a while. A few notes of caution for everyone disassembling their notebooks. I took my A105 apart several time, at least 5. Then the problems started. The ribbon cable that connects the power button and multimedia controls appears to have a limited tolerance for being unplugged and plugged back in. It appeared the 3rd time I took it apart. Put it back together and I had no light on the power button. Took it apart again and got to work by unpluggin the ribbon and putting it back in again. Thought it was just not plugged in correctly though it appeared OK. Took it apart again later... then it didn't work at all. A month old dead laptop! No matter what I did I couldn't get it to connect properly. Appeared to be a bit frazzled on the end of the ribbon. I snipped off a sliver of the end of it thinking it would clean it up. Still didn't work. Then the call to Toshiba repair center... basically played dumb. They said to send it in for repair. Was sweating it because it had obviously been opened more than a time or two... the CPU had been out to use some ArticSilver on it... Well I sweated about a week waiting for the call that said I'd voided my warranty. They never called. It took them about 10 days and it arrived working just fine. My days of playing modification boy is pretty much over at least with a machine that's under warranty. My original intent was to replace the Celeron 1.6 CPU with a Pentium 1.7 to hopefully take advantage of longer battery life and perhaps a bit more performance. I got neither. In fact it benchmarked worse (slightly) than the Celeron. So... bottom line. It's really not worth the risk. I think I just got lucky in not having them whack me with a non warranty repair.
-
Hey Dude, I really like what u share here. My plan is the same like yours. I don't really trust that any manufacturer will give good cooling and paste. I'd like to put artic silver too, any ideas how can I put it w/o having to like you???
I assume installing new memory wont be a problem then? I need to upgrade too =)
Please respond. TYVM =)
PS: any ideas what series of Toshiba or NEC to purchase within the $600-$800 budget. But not celeron-powered lappy. -
Anyone have instructions to getting at the second memory slot in a Satellite M100?

Hi cj2600 great website - Thanks for the help
can I ask for a request, would it be possible to find out about a laptop that are not listed please...
Toshiba Satellite m30 series
would it be possible to have details on how to repair these...
thanks -
I think that Toshiba Satellite M35 would be pretty similar. I have it on my list.
-
I have the same laptop; Toshiba Satellite Pro M15-s405. I apparently need a new cooling fan, but am having trouble accessing it and finding a replacement fan. My extended warranty ran out last November and my experience working on laptop hardware is limited. Any help on getting the old fan out without trashing my laptop would be greatly appreciated.
-
thanks Cj2600 its almost the same so i'll check it out
thanks again -
How do you disassemble a Satellite 2805-S503? I need to replace my dead dvd rom.
-
Hello guys, does anyone know how can i replace the old P4 cpu from an satellite P20 with a new Pentium M?
Is it possible?
One more thing.....where can i find the recovery disks.......and if i can't the drivers for the hardware that P20 has!
Thank you! -
I don't think that you can replace the old P4 with a new Pentium M. It's different socket, different voltage, etc... Correct me if I'm wrong.
You can try to call Toshiba and buy the recovery CDs from them. It's shouldn't be very expensive. Last time one of my customer was able to buy it for something like $39.59. Not sure how much it would be for P20.
For drivers visit Toshiba Support website, select your model and download any driver you need. -
I have a p15-s479 and need to replace the dvd combo drive. How would I go about that?
-
So am I to assume there no instruction or ideas as to how to disassemble this model ? Can anyone please point in any direction at all where I might get some sore instruction ? Or am I asking for my model to soon for ? Any info is better then none at all , Thanks
-
How about for the M105 series?
-
Hi cj2600,
Looks like you are doing a good work here. Well done!
I'm a newbie to this forum so Hi to all!
I'm struggling to reset the CMOS on a Satellite Pro M10 (PS630E-G206Z-EN) because the owner has put a bootup password in place, but of course now can't remember it!
I tried to strip the casing down, but the cover strip above the keyboard seems to want to snap off the tiny little pins underneath it, so I stopped. I have removed all(?) the screws from the undersde already.
When I get past the password I need to change the boot order to boot from CD to do a factory re-install of the OS, etc. Which key do I press to enter CMOS?
Please help if you can, I'd really appreciate it!
Regards,
Marlbro -
I'll second that.
Would love to see some info on the M100 / M105. -
hi, im new in here, do you have a guide to open the m10-s405, im trying to change my laptop video card, thank you...
-
I would also be interested in this, but with the Tecra M2 in mind. It seems my graphic chip has gone to heaven, and need to be replaced: forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=76188
Where do I get such a graphics chip? I think it is a nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 with 32mb of RAM. -
Can I third this? I'm replacing both sticks of memory, need to know how to change the second slot that's inaccessible.
-
I'll fourth that. I just got my M105 this last week and ordered 2 1GB sticks from newegg, assuming that like my last laptop, both slots were on the bottom...I shouldnt have to much trouble figureing out how to take this keyboard off...but I would like to see a chart or scematic or something first
-
And by the way, Im not just some n00b that will only post once...Ive been "guest" scanning these forums for months, just never had a reason to join till now...I used to have a MSI 1029, which was stolen, then when I got my insurance check to replace that I one I bought a MSI 1039...and my house was broken into again the night I got that...so yea...my pitance of a check that the insurance gave me this time was only enough to get me a lappy to get by with...
So yea. Hi. -
Same here, I had a much older laptop from back in the day, so I never really had anything to ask from here. But, now I've got big plans for my laptop with my newfound love of the digital slr photography and the great outdoors.
-
I think that the other RAM slot is under the keyboard, and to remove that I think we have to pry off the piece of plastic right above the keyboard, the one sitting over the hotkeys and speakers. I just dont wanna try to force it and break something, and I cant find any spec sheets online cause almost everything is blocked here at work....except this site, which is odd, but Im not one to complain.
-
I'd guess that you're right, but I share your concern about breaking something. I looked at a U205, and the strip above the kepboard pops off easily with your fingers. I've also worked with Dells which had small slots for a screwdriver to help remove that strip. On the M100/M105, it is not so clear how to remove the strip. But if you look at the teardown guides for other models (referenced in the first post of this thread), the ones I looked at all have a removable strip above the keyboard, so presumably the M100/M105 does too. I guess we need a brave soul to volunteer to try it and take pictures.
It won't be me, since I'm just going to upgrade to 1GB for now.
-
I agree with you both. I've already replaced the one underneath the chassis under the module hatch. I peered inside and tried to get as good a look as I can to see if the other slot was somewhere underneath. I didn't see anything of the kind. The other areas that I couldn't see are either because its the hard drive or dvd-ram bay, etc.
It appears the module is most likely underneath the keyboard. My Dell laptop had a notch to help remove that strip above the keyboard, but this one doesn't, and I tried (not very hard, though), to pry it off with my fingernail. I'll eventually go a bit further in my efforts if I don't see anything put up soon. -
I got too anxious and broke my new laptop!
Haha, just kidding. I changed out the second module. It is under the keyboard.
You can use this as a guide:
http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/ToshibaA55/SatelliteA55_remove_keyboard.htm
The "securing strip" is the hardest part. You just gotta "man up" and put some muscle into taking it off (at least, more than you probably would otherwise) . When you take off the battery, you'll see some small tabs underneath the strip. I just used a simple ball point pen and a small flat head screwdriver to help me push them out.
The strip hooks over the monitor hinges, so be careful. I used a paper clip to help me lift and pull off the strip. Looking back now, it probably wasn't the best idea as I could've short-circuited something. But, it worked fine for me.
Everything else is simple. Two screws and a plastic clip hold the top part of the keyboard down. Remove that, and you'll see the shiny metal memory module cover. Two screws, and you can remove that.
When putting it all back together. Remember to put the module cover back on
!
I powered everything up, and they system info shows the 2gb I installed. Happy upgrading! -
Hi, first of all thanks for your site it looks like it is helpful to a lot of people. I also have 4 years old Toshiba notebook Satellite 2400 (Model No. PS240C-00UJXP) which still works great with exception of screen hinges that are broken. Any idea where to buy replacement hinges???
-
Is there a dissambly instructions for a A35. I would really like the service manual, but I cannot find it. I need to remove system board to fix dc jack.
Thanks,

Hi!
Pleassse post for Toshiba Satellite A50 .....
This is a 2 year old model and may soon require disassembly.
Thanks! .....

Does anyone know how easy it would be to change a cpu in the Toshiba P100? Or even if it is possible?
Thanks. -
Greetings all,
I have a quick question.
I just got me a Toshiba Satellite, and need to change the internal battery on main board, is there anyone that has a tutorial for this procedure, or do I have to send it in to get done?
Thanks in advance, and I am so glad I found this forum.
PEACE
Well after playing in the BIOS a bit, I managed to get the laptop straight, and no need to change the CMOS battery.
Thanks to all that had expressed their input in my matter -
Does anyone know how to remove the cover over the hard drive on the M115-S3094? It should be a simple thing but after removing the one screw, one of the sides just won't come loose. See pic here:
http://www.geocities.com/agouti2000/toshiba/
Thanks. -
I have to echo Chutsman's request about the hdd cover on M115's. I just bought an M115-S3104 and noticed that the case is noticeably cheaper than my M105-S3041 - especially the hdd cover. The cover on the M105 series was thicker, had a rubber bumper on it, and slid off of the base. Anyways - I'd better not try to hijack this thread - I too would really like to know how to remove (without breaking) the hdd cover on my M115.

Hey, planning an upgrade for my Satellite Pro L100. I know it's a rare model but i think it's pretty similar in design to an A100 and L25. Does anyone know if I can change the cpu over by just removing the bits under covers i.e. wifi ram hard disk dvd and then the bottom cover and not having to dismantle the whole thing? There's no cpu access panel. Cheers!

Hi brothers,
Is the somebody who had changed the hd of M30 series? or tell me clues about how ... :s
Thanks! -
M30
1.Remove one M2.5x10 flathead screw securing the HDD cover and remove it
2.Use the vinyl tab to pull back on the HDD, disconnecting it from the computer
3.Lift the HDD out

Anyone got a guide for Toshiba A110.
Thanks -
Hey all,
Just wanted to introduce myself. I am a laptop tech for a repair facility and I mostly work on Toshiba USA models. I have an excelent knowledge of virtually all toshiba laptops barring the newer models (anything newer than a 105/A105). So if you have any questions regarding repairs, I would be more than happy to answer them.
Just a few things though.
1. I do not work for Toshiba
2. I cannot tell you where I work
3. Some information about Toshiba laptops I am unable to share due to non disclosure agreements. -
If you come across an M115-S3094 and know how to remove the cover over the hard drive, I would like to know about it. See my post on the previous page. It is message #137.
-
Chutsman, please take a picture of the base from a top view so i can see the whole cover, not just the opening you have.
the design of the m115 looks very similar to that of the P105/A105 which just has a single screw holding in the cover. all that is needed to do is unscrew this and then pry up the cover from that same edge. -
Unfortunately the notebook is in another country 3000 miles away. I just thought you might know "off the top of your head" how the cover is removed. I've examined that fourth edge that wouldn't budge very closely and was unable to see what is holding it. And since the notebook wasn't mine, I didn't want to overstress it. If you do happen to come across one and find out how to remove the cover I would appreciate it if you post the solution.
-
The next one I come across I will be sure to note how to take off the cover. But as with most toshiba plastics (well laptops in general), once you remove all of the screws its just a matter of pulling relaly hard to get the part to come off.
I know that with the A75, sometimes I will have to use roughly 100lbs of pulling force to seperate the base from palm rest even after the screws are removed. -
hey there,
how do i insert memeory module into satellite A 130 s2276 ? it seems to opens in the back with cover called the memory cover. i hope i dont have to yank out the keybaord as in some other models.
-
hi. There are two more clips. You see the small one in your picture (closest to where the screw is, not the front ones)? There is an identical one on the opposite site of the lid (in the same position, more or less), and one more (slightly wider) in the corner on the front of the machine. Assuming you are sitting with the front of the machine toward you grab the lid and twist it slightly counter-clockwise to release the small clip on the side and the lid will come right off.
cheers -
Thanks for the update. Next time I have the laptop I'll give it another try. Those clips surely hold that fourth edge really tight.
