If they do like ASUS and make an option of an FHD (1920x1080) screen... I'll buy it immediately.

Not having to worry about dongles and having a dedicated Pg/Home/End row is great.

I noticed the same thing but I thought my eyes was tricking me :)

Didn't have the chance to check any relevant settings but would love to exchange knowledge if any of us reached a resolution.

Took the unit apart at the weekened and can confirm that the fan itself is silent. If you remove it from its mounting then no buzz. The buzz is created by the air input channels that are directly below the keyboard side of the case (hence why the buzz can be heard clearly from the keyboard side) and also the exhaust vent. Attempted various methods of additional support to the fan as when you press the left hand side the buzz (vibration) is dampened somewhat but could not get it to stop. Spoils an otherwise excellent unit but cannot get anything else close to the spec so will live with. I have the 11J unit which can play 3D games very well and although did not get for gaming the buzz when the I7 cores are under pressure is something else.
However, the BIOS fix when in eco mode and on battery allows me now to use in meetings without people looking for the fly in the room :)

So far I have not been able to find a setting to adjust that. Must be some power savings mode ?. Don't see anything in windows that would be causing it. Might be a bios thing.

Either way so far no luck. I have the i3 version.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Also just noticed the z835 only dims automatically when on battery mode, when plugged in the display stays the same brightless regardless of the screen background.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Found the fix, turn of intel 3000 display savings technology. Works great now.

I really love this ultrabook. Way better than the XPS13 that I had.

    1. Lighter weight (very noticeable)
    2. No screen dimness issue (Dell sent me 2 xps13's, both had it, tech support unable to resolve).
    3. Better viewing angles on the display and brightness
    4. More ports than the Dell (no ethernet port or sd slot!)
    5. Better battery life (1hr more for my use vs the dell)
    6. XPS13 touchpad is awful. Very difficult to even scroll vertically with it.

The only thing I liked about the dell was the design/looks. However function wise it was no good for me.

just to update as this thread died really :)

and heres the reason why.....................been using mine constantly for 5 months or so now and its performed flawlessly, its still as fast as the day i bought it, its still working without issue for everything, all sleep modes, software and drivers, not a single problem encountered. and i get the feeling its very similar for 90% of Z83 series owners out there hence no thread left! lol!

either way, top job from tosh!

I, as well, have no prob throwing an update in. This is still my main system and now has a Renice 240GB mSATA SSD in it. Although, initially, I got SATA 3 functioning, I could never recreate that once the mSATA was switched off for another and a re-install of the mSATA was conducted.

Funny as it seems, I have a top of the line Zenbook sitting right here beside me with SATA 3 and I just don't touch it... I am very happy with the Z830 although....

I have been itching to try out the 15" Series 9 so may buy one when it comes out in Ivy Bridge.

I recently bought a satellite z830. I love the machine but only one problem. I'm running out of room on the ssd...its 128 gb but only 98 available...how can I open up more space? I have windows 7 installation disks so can I get rid of one of the partitions? There is a 11 gb and a 8 gb one...I have seen other threads warning against this-

Any other owners that have successfuly managed to open up more of the 128 gb for use?

    thanks

Depends upon what options your unit has. Mine has 3G and I did a fresh install to get rid of the bloatware and also to recover the extra partition. I used all the Toshiba downloads but could not get the 3g switch to appear on the F8 Flash cards, Redid adding the toshiba value added package as the last thing - still no joy. Contacted toshiba and they confirmed the sequence of install and also were baffled. So there appears to be some aspects of the original install that cannot be duplicated with a clean install. I also has doem issues with getting the z830 to recognise the ODD at boot up and nearly thought I could not refresh it from the original disks. Finally managed after an hour and some serious stress. Also had the same issue with a toshiba R700. Actually took all day before I could get the ODD to be recognised at boot up and do the reinstall. Had stupidly done a full image backup to my NAS drive but could not get that to load up at boot up. I have returned to original and kept the hidden partition for guaranteed reinstall should it be required. Also do all my image backups to an SD drive.
You can just delete the hidden partition using disc manager as I have also done but with the ODD problems at boot up I am keeping that partition on the machine now.
Have added a 64GB SDXC card to give me more space for non encrypted data and also to run skyrim from. :)

I tried the higher end i7 model with 6gb ram, but couldn't find sim card slot. Can you provide me your exact model no.? I think the 3g version is the latest launch. I can see it on Toshiba Australia

Looks like the next wave of ultrabooks are coming out soon- anyone else notice that with all the new and old systems on the horizon, the Toshiba is still the lightest ultrabook?

thanks for the replies regarding increasing available hd space everyone. The WEIRDEST thing just happened. When I made my post, I had 98 gb available with 2 gb free...Today, a windows update installed automatically and my free space jumped from 2 to 7 gb...No other changes to any files or programs or anything else...??????????????????? anybody else ever experience this?

What have you got virtual memory allocation set to as that does dynamically change and I have observed some big shifts depending upon system use. My virtual memory is managed by Windows and the paging file size is currently 8086MB so around 8GB. This impacts on your free disc availability. Intersting that you only see 98GB available I have the original install but the two hidden partitions are 1.46GB and 11.95GB out of 119.24GB This leaves 105GB as available. Have deleted some bloatware such as nero stuff and toshiba partners and realtime. Wonder where you are losing so much disc to have yours only showing 98GB??

I'm still carrying my z830 everywhere I go. My wife sometimes makes fun of me a little bit. (Calls it my baby blanket or something similar.) I take it to the couch in the Great Room when I'm watching a soccer game. I gave a 45-minute talk from it this past Sunday, using Prezi www.prezi.com. Used it for my monitor so I could see the presentation. What a successful machine! Zero problems!

I am wondering the same thing about whats taking up so much space leaving me with only 98 gb available, and am curious how you have 105 gb. I have uninstalled all programs that I knew I would not use. That said, there are so many toshiba "wares" in the programs, I'm not sure which can safely be got rid off...

I replaced SSD and clean installed W7pro.
I install only driver: Chipset, WiFi, Display, SDcard, BT, FlashCard.
Intel Rapid Start and Intel AT disabled in BIOS.
Now I have 12% self discharge per day...

I'm guessing there will be a Intel "Ivy Bridge" z830 equivalent [upgraded CPU, Ivy Bridge launches soon].
As for the other specifications, I would assume they would remain relatively the same.

    --

By the way, i've just installed Debian on my z830 and lot of things work fine unless some FN keys. FN+ESC (mute) doesn't work (appears the volume control symbol but not works). Also FN+Z (retro-light keyboard) doesn't work althought if i turn on the light in Windows and then i reboot and go to linux the keyboard still on (but FN key doesn't work).

Anyone with debian on z830 knows to fix this problems?

    Thanks again and again!

Is anyone else annoyed that when using Fn+3/4 to adjust volumes, there is no visual bar of where the volume is? I find this such an oversight...You have no idea how high or low the volume is until the sound actually comes out

    I am annoyed with this.

Yeah... bugged me a little too.

I think a BIOS update can fix this but I think they figured that you listen for volume, not look at it.
