landsome it seems the problem might be related to ssd firmware although not all laptops are affected. was the toshiba on marvell too ? (M4 is) you were probably unlucky with your combinations.
you may look up for firmware releases of your specific ssd model and upgrade/downgrade it (search for issue first, maybe it's after/before certain firmware revisions)
I have similar issue on crucial M4 drive in a HP elitebook - when hdd password set it will never wake up from sleep. confirmed by others on different laptops on crucial forums and you know what: they replied they can't do anything about it although on previous firmwares -as people report - the problem did not appear so seems it was broken but they refuse to fix it now !
M4 512GB - won't wake out of sleep with HDD passwo... - Page 3 - Crucial Community
-
No, the Toshiba msata is based on their own chipset (formerly a JMicron, afaik) - it's the default Z830 ssd.
And both wake from sleep, just that it takes 1-2 minutes. -
and you didn't set HD password in bios setup for them? my mistake I forgot to add the problem takes place when that password is set
-
The point is that, if I set a bios HDD pwd, the Z830 takes 1-2 minutes to wake from sleep - with either of the drives.
If I do not set a HDD pwd, it wakes up normally.
I also put the original Z830 Toshiba SSD in my Dell and set a HDD password - and the notebook wakes up normally.
All of which suggests it's a Z830 bios (or hardware) problem, and almost certainly not a problem with either the Toshiba or the Marvell SSD. -
you can be right it's the Z830 to blame.
but as some of laptops did not have problem with crucial either while some had i would still bet in this case on the unlucky combination of the two (laptops bios/hardware and ssd firmware) and there might be nothing you can do about it (apart from resigning from the password or trying yet another SSD
I will report if the problem is gone with firmware upgrade in my 2.5" crucial M4 in a couple of days (so you could perhaps risk trying M4 mSata version) -
in follow up to this, I RMA'd the crucial drive a month or so ago and received my refund. I have since purchased a 256Gb Samsung PM830 mSATA drive that's literally just landed this morning and bonus, got it for less than the crucial drive.
I am just running my backups now and intend to follow the cycle once more, slap the new drive in and fresh install W8 Pro x64, will report back later with findings!
Samsung drive fitted, w8 installed, all tweaks done and all tosh software I want installed. fully patched and most of my stuff transferred and so far all seems well
drives only been in 8 hours or so but seems responsive and robust enough, quicker than the crucial and hasn't bombed yet. I've slept it was well and power cycled it a good few times in testing and its looking good despite my paranoia
to be continued...... -

Glad to hear the process went well. Keep us posted with any other updates. -
done a few tests, all with it set on tosh eco mode and on battery, full boot no msconfig tweeks and its 20.1 seconds from power button press to full desktop
this is with a fingerprint swipe to logon still enabled (so windows password set to on) and with Start8 installed and set to boot directly to desktop, not metro start screen.
ie10 and google (only homepage) then takes a further 2 seconds max to load from a mouse click
I ran a quick AS SSD bench as well
Read: Seq = 260 mb/s, 4K = 14, 4K-64Thrd = 178, Access = 0.15ms
Write: Seq = 236mb/s, 4K = 37, 4K-64Thrd = 88, Access = 0.1ms
so its running sata 2 as expected on the older Z830 BIOS revisions and its pulling 7.8 out of 9.9 on the WEI in windows.
overall pretty happy.
oh and shutdown is sneaky on 8, screen goes blank from hitting the shutdown button in less than a second, and I mean literally 0.5s I reckon but power lights don't go out for a further 6 seconds, but still, darn quick! -
Hi Guys. I still love my z930, but I have to ask -- has anyone else ever experienced a quick (and random) shutdown (straight to a cold book, with no suspend/resume memory)? It SEEMS to be temperature-related. It's still under warranty. Took it in for a carry-in repair here in Louisville. (I like Toshiba's policy to hook up with local computer shops for carry-in repairs.) They apparently blew off the dust and claimed it was "fixed." But it still shuts down. I picked up a Targus laptop chiller (their dual-fan model). It has at least given me some relief. As soon as I catch my inbox up, I guess I'll take it back to warranty. But in the meantime, have we heard anything recently about fans that didn't do their job? Is there a bios problem? Are the fans running out of steam over time? (I bought this one in August, so I have some warranty remaining.)
-
Sounds like a "Thermal Shutdown". If the repair shop already "blew" out your fans/vents and it's still having the shutdown issue, then perhaps they need to open the laptop up and manually remove any "dustballs" lodged in the fan.
As for fan problems, I haven't heard of anything.
I would give Toshiba another call and see if you can do the local repair shop option again. Let them shop know this is the second time your bringing the laptop in for the same problem.
Good luck and keep us posted with any updates. -
Thanks Alex. Had already called them. They charged me $39, by the way, first time, saying that blowing out dust is not a warranty item. So hopefully they'll start with that $39 as my base payment again.

I still have my z835-p330 bought in Nov 2011. I ran speed fan, and it shows that my cpu core 0 and 1 run around 50-55*C. So hot.

I just picked up a Satellite Z830 10T, was looking for some good info on how to clean install Windows 7 to it. I haven't got a Win 7 Retail disc. Anyone got any ideas about how to do this and if so, what drivers are "required" once done? - I'm looking to clear out all the crapware because on the factory install, there is only around 69gb free on the 128gb mSata
Any info greatly appreciated. -
BTW, bios v1.80 has been out for a while... Flashed it and seems OK, no noticeable differences.

Yeah, I flashed it a while back. I agree, no noticeable differences. Fans not affected, so seems just fine. -
Does anyone know where to get a new motherboard for the Z830? I fried mine plugging in a faulty powered external USB. It was working so well for so long and then I got unlucky.. sadness
any help would be appreciated! -

I was looking for some cosmetic trim for mine (screen bezel) and I found these guys: CBC Computer Systems Ltd | ICT Solutions and Services in the UK. Good prices for what I wanted, not sure how much a mobo would run you as the cpu is soldered on. Might be worth asking, or looking for a spares/repairs machine on Ebay.
Hope that helps, sorry to hear of your woes. -
i have similar problem, but mine is worse. I had it completely shut down, and i turned off the usb offline charging option, still my battery goes from 100% to nothing in just 2 days. any thoughts?

Might want to give Toshiba a ring if you still have the laptop under warranty
Personally, I cannot figure out why your battery would deplete so quickly, if in fact the laptop is shutdown [not in sleep/hibernation].
Good luck and keep us posted with any news -
Turn off the Sleep and Charge mode in the bios. This mode can supply USB power to the USB port when the computer is in stanby/sleep mode, hibernation mode, or shutdown state. Your mystery battery drain will go away.

If anyone is interested in a spare Z830 battery or AC power supply, let me know. I'm trying to sell spares I have. Both are used, but in good working order.
-
I would be interested in a spare US / UK keyboard... PM me if you have that too.
-
Sorry, I only have the battery and that is currently up on ebay.

Hi
I have a z830-10F with a clean installation of windows 8.1? I want to install the toshiba utility to have the FN Keys.
Now with windows functions, only work some keys. Brightness, disable wifi... doesn't work.
Last time I installed windows 8, they work, but this time not.
I installed toshiba value added package, fn keys utility... any idea?
Do you have they working on windows 8?
Thanks -
I bought a 1600x900 panel (from a sony SA series), it fits in my z830 fine, the LED backlight comes on and responds to the brightness keys fine, but the display itself is blank. If I connect to a monitor using HDMI, and clone the display, it adjusts to 1600x900, so it is able to talk to the panel at least.
Anyone have any ideas I can try to get it to spring to life? would be great to get the higher resolution display to work.
SECONDLY
Has anyone managed to resolve the fan vibration noise? The speed of the fan is fine, but the vibration is so annoying. I've dismantled it, removed the mainboard, padded with rubber etc and still cant solve it. The fan is quiet when it isnt touching the chassis. I'm hoping someone has solved it by now! -
Dear All,
My Z830-10f (an Italian model - Portégé Z830-10F - Toshiba) core i5 doesn't power on anymore and is giving a 72h code (PPV voltage is not more than 0.68V when the computer is booting up).
After a bit of googling I've understood that the motherboard has a serious problem and should be replaced.
On ebay I've found an used motherboard from USA but it comes from another model Z830 Intel Core™ i7-2677M @1.80GHz. I've compared the motherboards and they appear identical, thus I'm wondering if the i7 model can be compatible.
I know that I should find the exact spare part, but it's really a jungle and probably all the differences are related to the different codes used worldwide.
WHat do you think about?
Any suggestion is really appreciated!!!
Thanks a lot in advance!

I have a Z830 and it's died once and the motherboard was replaced under warranty and it's died again, same problem as you. The power regulator I believe is of faulty design. I would say that it's better to invest in a new notebook unless you can get a system board for under $50 US. The going rate for the i7 is $200-250 right now for a refurbished board.
