Yes i want to see videos of the machine, detailed explainations of the machine, and bloody benchmarks. I saw it in person recently, man it is HUGE but very pretty. This thing will tear many different applications apart! I want to see a lot of pictures also, i don't know why notebookreview is taking so long to pounce on a review on this ultimate beast.

lol, possibly because PCMark Vantage and 3dMark Vantage no longer runs on Win 7 RTM. It makes it hard to benchmark at this point. :)

PCMark Vantage and 3dMark Vantage will run on Windows 7--there is a patch for PCMark that will allow your runs to be validated as "default settings". Prior to the patch the scores would show "not default".

I'd like to agree with you Sgilmore62, but myself and quite a few others get the BSOD trying to run it on RTM x64 Win 7. Do you have a link to this patch?

    Congrats on this fine machine.

Two questions, what do you think about the screen quality and speaker quality.

played with this at j&r in nyc today, speakers were good, 50% sound volume filled my area and the keyboard will take some getting used to,

there was no fingerprint sensor, which was shown on some pics, the costco version of the x505-832 may have as the pics show it. the 830 model is on display at j&r

the screen looked great, not full hd but i reckon this version packs more value for money (X505-830) ill probably end up getting this one soon from costco as they carry 2 year warranty and ill chance it with the fingerprint sensor.

I have that patch installed already, yet still BSOD.

I'll try the compat mode, but changing the testing parameters isn't going to give valid results is it?

The screen is nice, the speakers are really nice.

The keyboard SUCKS. Flat and featureless, but it IS really a desktop replacement so "at home" use you would probably have a full size keyboard that you prefer.

I did a full review for laptopvideo2go.com. When the owner posts it, I'll copy the link. He already said he didn't mind me sharing. :)

If you don't have the backlit keyboard then yaeh...it SUCKS, but you can upgrade to the backlit one whenever you get ready--the BIOS supports it and they are available from the aftermarket suppliers. I like the flatter keys on the new Toshiba keyboards and if you like the higher profile glossier keyboard you can get that too for like $30 but it's not backlit.

The only thing I don't like about the new keyboards is the carryover from previous models of the small arrow keys--as many reviewers that knocked the small arrow keys you would think they would have changed that but it would have killed the Toshiba keyboard interchangeability.

Mine's backlit, but I still don't like the flat keys. I don't care tho, I use a Logitech DiNovo BT keyboard for daily work. To me, it's my desktop computer. Have to have a laptop because of my job and because of where I PUT and USE my computer. Otherwise, I would get a desktop, but this is a darn good alternative to the desktop I can't have. :) Hopefully in the next year, RAM prices come down a bit. I'd like to replace the 2Gb SODIMM with a 4Gb one to match and get the full 8Gb. It'd be helpful with VMWare. Oh, VMWare wkstn 7 is out and works great on here.

I just got the studio xps 1340 and the keyboard is very similar to the newer toshiba's. I enjoy this keyboard, when i was at j and r it had the same feeling. Cmon man do a better review than the one on laptopvideo2go.com, if you don't know how to do one then read some of the reviews by the administrators and ask us. I want to know about the processor when it comes to converting hd files 720p and 1080p how long does it take?

Hey guys I am in Australia and I see an ad for the X500. It says it is preloaded with 32-bit Windows 7 - THAT IS INSANE for a gaming machine - and the 64-bit Windows 7 is "embedded in the partition". What does this mean?

Can someone confirm the video card memory uses GDDR5?

The video card memory means it is a higher jump from gddr3, if not most of the graphics card today are gddr3. Gddr5 is like 100 percent performance jump, especially when you overclock the card. Here are some links, http://www.qimonda.com/graphics-ram/gddr5/index.html, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GDDR5.
One of the reasons why i want this machine is because of the new gdrr5 card out but i would like to see it be sli, so i might wait, but i can't wait to have a core i7 right now but i am in school and not worrying about this right now as before.

I've done a "better review" and have mailed it to them directly. I have NO benchmarking tools that seem to work at this time. I don't do any HD video work, so wouldn't know how or with what software to use. Quick google search shows up several benchmarks out there if thats what you want. Unfortunately benchmarks don't really tell me REAL WORLD usability, only how certain things perform. My "review", tho I am NOT a professional reviewer, just an end user is based on that kind of usage.

There will be plenty of canned benchmarks available very soon, I'm sure here and everywhere. People are looking to "bash" or "praise" Win 7. From being an early adopter of Win 7 and beta tester of it from way back in the early states, you'll find the OS performs NEARLY identical to Vista with the exception of front end user experience which is significantly more optimized. According to those same canned benchmarks, about 10% faster.

Do those benchmarks translate into real world? Sometimes, sometimes not. How efficient and speedy do 3 VM's switch between each other and the host OS? How well does it handle high memory usage with those 3 vm's with a full load of regular user apps running? Say Outlook, Excel, Word, Pidgin, a few browser windows open and maybe my debugger window open looking at some developer's mistakes? Will it crash? How much disk thrashing occurs? How much lag. All those things are important to me. During the work day, that is about what my system is used for. My time = money. I'm on a small team that supports over 6,000 servers and those VM's are my life.

I'm not a gamer. I can't tell you how well this card is going to work on the very latest high end game. Hell, I still play Battlefield 2 and you do NOT want to compete against me at Spider Solitaire. :)

I will tell you real world usage. As a 65+wpm touch typist, this keyboard sucks. Keys are way too flat for a good feel. You really wouldn't want to type 10 pages of text and be comfortable doing it. Screen is nice, but res is still WAY too high for my aging eyes. LOL.

The machine is "huge". It's not something you are going to want to carry around with you all the time.

It's quieter than my X205-sli3, it's WAY faster and so far, a bit more stable. With all my apps listed above running, my processor utilization (for all "8" processors that show up 4 core, 4 HT), I average about 65-70 during the workday. It's more efficient of a machine for my use than the X205 Core2Duo machine. More accomplished in less time. I suspect I'll be upgrading to the full 8gb ram sooner than I would like, especially if I attempt to run yet another VM machine concurrently which I probably WILL end up doing.

So, like I said, you want generic benchmarks or a review from a gamer's perspective, I can't help you there.

^^^Even if you feel that way, EVERY notebook maker has a worse system then Toshiba. Trust me i know, i have had Dell's Hp's, Gateway, Sony's, and Toshiba and the 2 Toshiba's i owned previously(Like 2 years and 6 years respectively) Were better then ALL of them. Trust me, you will come back.

Laptop speakers never sound great anyway you always have to get external ones anyway if you want to have a true movie and music experience.

Here download and test out these "free cpu and gpu benchmarking tools" http://www.maximumpc.com/article/fe...o_benchmark_your_pc_without_breaking_the_bank. I do agree that no matter what type of things you are benchmarking it still isn't real world things. Can you convert a regular movie into a 720P file with 5.1 surround sound i want to know how long does it take? The keyboard should of been a lot more full sized and wider. How are the speakers from your perspective? Have you tried external ones?

Heat is really low, blows out the back. Quiet too. ok, maybe it's hotter than I thought. Just put my hand back there and it's toasty. The Lap in laptop I think just just a name. Notebook would be safer general terminology. I doubt I'd want it in my lap. I still haven't gotten to install Crysis and the benchmark yet. Wifey wanted me to come to some party at her office. Free food and drinks. Can't pass that up.

well if you are gaming it would be toasty so thats not really a problem.

They actually have this logitech thing that came out for $30 it basically is something for you to put under the notebook and then place it in your lap it prevents you from getting burned.

After messing with my Q305 overheating (looking to repair it tonight after work) I decided to see if Toshiba changed anything to do any better heat management. I'd love to see some running temperatures on this thing.

The results look pretty good! The temperatures are quite low too - does the program max out the CPU during the test?

Name Intel Core i5 - not sure why it's saying the processor is an Core i5.

Great thanks not bad at all. The heat on this machine looks good so far.

How is the quality of the X505-Q830 screen? I hate low the contrast LCDs that seem to be all over the place these days.

Thanks Compusmurf. I managed to get my X305 to stabilize around 75 degrees GPU (World of Warcraft full screen for a half hour, laptop on a chill pad) after putting new paste on both the GPU and CPU. I'm surprised that this machine, which is much smaller, handles the heat better.

I might be saving a few pennies for one of these, I think!

Maybe because the app was written before the i7 was built? Just a guess, nothing more.

I'm not familiar with that program but are those temps at the computer idle, max load or what? Thanks for testing that.

That could be possible at the same time this program probably doesn't know that the mobile I7's are here and is probably judging it off of a desktop speed.

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Freedom, i am also waiting for RGB LED. Sadly these notebook makers are taking TOO ling to adopt this. It seems like only HP and Dell are doing it.

It's because they are prohibitevely expensive at this size. Most of laptop LED backlights you see now is below 16"
As for me, I am waiting for AMOLED screens, not just LED backlit ones ;)

The screen on X505 is ordinary I would say. They ramp up the brightness, but it loses contrast because of that - but it hard to decide what is better, dim screen with pure black and impure white (X205), or bright screen with impure black and pure white (X505).
1680x945 matrix has one CCFL, but, its quite bright and has good viewing angles
1920x1080 matrix is a dual CCFL - but I decided against it, since DPI of it is just too high, even at this screen size a lot of stuff is too small. Also GF 250M is not really up to task of gaming at this res, so no real point.

I used the offices Spyder2 to calibrate the color. If you have access to one, it really does help ALOT on LCD screens.

Personally I find that precise calibration for LCD screens is useless, mainly because even gamma changes simply if you move you head slightly up and down ;) LCD screen response values are just too head position-dependant, and it's a lot worse with laptop screens.

Still, some degree of calibrarion is beneficial, mainly to adjust gamma down a little, bringing it to be approximately around 2.2-2.4 with your average head position and lid angle.
