I may follow your lead with a soft microfiber cloth. Is it the same thing as an eyeglass cleaning cloth available at any vision center type store? As for the HD question, not sure about that. To be honest, I have had many hard drives for between 4 and 6 years. I don't think I have ever had a hard drive truly fail on me, at least not from a hardware standpoint. I believe the way drives are crafted these days, if it isn't going to fail within a year because of a factory defect, it will probably last a very long time. I have heard horror stories about the life expectancy of SSD's, but I have never owned one, so I cannot comment on it.

Really? I would imagine SSD's would last quite a long time (like alex said no moving parts?).

Chiro, I really appreciated you in depth review of your Qosmio btw. However while I am awaiting my vaio RMA im still torn between the g73 and Qosmio (as u mentioned earlier). I may wait for sandy bridge but either way they are going to be essentially the same models.

I found a g73 at best buy, and I think I may have found a Micro center nearby. They carry the 896 I believe so hopefully theyll have one on display.

Did you get to look at the screens of both before purchasing your Qosmio? Which did you like better?

Also I somewhat like the design of the g73 in person, but have not seen a qosmio thus far. What do you think of the 2 designs?

I appreciate any input you or anyone else has :)

P.S. I'm not an owner (yet) but hopefully others will find this info useful, as I think others will likely be choosing between the 2.

The microfiber looks like a cotton towel, but neon green (it's actually made of plastics [80% polyester and20% polyamide])

    Looks like that, but green.

Can someone that plays Black Ops tell me what driver they're using. Because I just don't understand how my x505-893 cannot play black ops at a decent resolution(i'm talking about 1280x800 here not even 1600X...). The stock is 250.19

    I have a 894 with STOCK drivers of: 259.12

I haven;t played MW-Black Ops, but this system screams through Starcraft2 at MAX settings and SOURCE at MAXED settings.

    Good luck

I didn't want to start a new thread and figure this would be the place to put my question.

I ordered a X505-Q893 last month and like it a lot especially for the price I go it for, but I seem to be having a problem with my video card, although I am pretty sure its just doesn't have enough power if the power cord isn't plugged in.

When I am trying to play games (without AC power) my 460M seems to get stuck in 2D mode running at 403 core clock, but if I plug my AC power in then it will run in 3D mode and I can run my games at max settings. (I am running the latest drivers from toshiba website which is like 2 versions behind the official nvidia ones) I even changed settings in Nvidia control panel for my game to run at "Maximum Performance" under power management but that didn't seem to do anything.

Does anyone else have this issue? I wanted to use it to game but it seems I can't do that unless I'm sitting next to a power strip lol.

I read this occurrence somewhere else also. The i5 chipset has something like "Optimal Graphics" which means it also has integrated graphics. When on battery, the motherboard automatically switches to the integrated graphics and disables the dedicated. I'm not sure if there is any work around for this (not the case for i7 chipsets).

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Any word on the 2011 Qosmio x505 Sandy Bridge units?
When will they be available in Canada? At what price?

I just played Counter Strike with my laptop unplugged to double check. Yes, it plays fine on battery.

I know the current Qosmios (894, 896, 898) will game on battery; but the next generation Qosmios (i7 with Sandy Bridge) will also have the "Optimal Graphics" so I don't know if they will be able to game unplugged.

    Good luck.

Greetings all, this is my first-time post, my apologies for not doing so before now.

Recently, I purchased an X500/06c and so far I'm really enjoying this behemoth of a machine.

    Qosmio X500/06C
    i7 840QM, 8GB DDR3 (1066MHz), 1.25TB (500GB (7200rpm) + 750GB (5400rpm) SATA, NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX460M

Having read through the forum posts and of course this Official owners Lounge I can see that this will be a grand machine for the types of work and gaming that I will do.

I want to thank you all for the guidance and insights within these posts and congratulate you on job well done.

Hoping to be involved a little more in the future.

    Regards
    Red Mayor

    Welcome Red mayor!

    Red,

Question, did your reseller upgrade your card from the i7 740qm, or was your i7 840qm cpu standard.

I think if it was standard the people in the states got jobbed

It is standard CPU for the Austraila/New Zealand Market.

Compared to some of the prices that were quoted here in this Thread and around the boards it was rather expensive though (NZD $4899.50, somewhere around USD $3,736.36). The 505 model isn't available down here.

Thanks for the welcome Chaps it is most heartily received.

Is it possible that its the built in harddrive protection that is freezing your lappy. I noticed that if I bump my lappy to hard, Toshibia's hdd protection hardware kicks in and freezes my lappy, but only for a few seconds tops. If your not bumping around your lappy maybe your hdd drive is failing. Is it posible for you to use the restore disks (hopefully you made them) and restore to factory settings. Maybe some software went off the rails, and wiping everything would fix the problem.

    Good luck.

I have tried it, and its close to useless. It makes keyboard extremely "mushy", and also leaves key prints on screen (since it touches the screen in closed state). So it went straight to the bin.

Thanks for the feedback Ingvarr. I'll probably pass on it too.

Another Question [and probably a dumb one], but when I get my replacement tomorrow, do I have to reburn my Recovery Discs, or will my current discs be OK ? [same model laptop; Qosmio q8102X].

    Thanks

Question about the Hybrid 4G Serial ATA drive in the 8104X:

Do I have to put specific applications onto this 4GB section of the drive or does it happen automatically? Also, anybody know if it is my C:/ or E:/ (default settings) drive that is hybrid?

    edit: does that make sense?

    Thanks in advance.

    No no no...

I thought the same thing as you, before I discovered what the 500 GB hybrid actually does.

There is not a seperate 4 GB SSD [partition] on your drive. What the 4 GB SSD actually does is act as a buffer and cache for the harddrive. This allows it to have quite a bit faster access speeds than a typical 7200 rpm HDD.

Here's a video explaining how hybrid HDDs work and comparing their write speeds to traditional SSDs and HDDs.

    Good stuff.

Also, any advice for how to maximize the fact that there are 2 internal drives? For instance, storing Program Files on 1 and music, photos, etc. on the other. Or just fill the 1st drive up and then move on to the next.

First...congratulations on your new laptop, (I just got my Q8104X last weekend and am enjoying customizing it)

Next, some suggestions on how to take advantage of the two hard drives.
Assuming c: is your 500Gb boot drive and d: is the second 500Gb drive

I like to separate code and data (it makes backups far easier) so putting all you installations on c: and then all your data on d: makes a lot of sense.
You can even move your my documents folder from c: to d:

Another good tip is to move your swap file off of your primary boot disk. This is less important with the amount of RAM you have, but if you do anything that is RAM intense and may cause you to grow your swap file to compensate then moving if off the boot drive can have a small but measurable performance impact.

Note: Myself I will be using the laptop for both personal and business work so I have partitioned the second drive (150/350) and installed a second copy of windows 7 (x64 Ultimate) on the smaller 150Gb then configured it so both of my dual boot OSes can see the 350Gb as d: but not see each other. That lets me do clever things like share my Outlook data file between the two OSes by putting it on the d drive, and ensuring I can get to critical project files instantly if a call comes in even if I am booted to the home premium partition.

I'm paranoid about wearing out the keyboard on my x505-q892.
    a few questions:
-does the keyboard on these models wear out fast?
-does anybody know what type of key cap printing did toshiba use?
-is it better if I connect an external gaming keyboard? what would be the best choice?

Sorry if i have too many questions...

Hello, I had some questions. I'm considering the Qosmio x505-8102 as one of my choices for a gaming laptop.

Does the x505 have any common reoccuring issues in its line?
What would you say makes it better than other laptops? Or worse?
    Pros and cons?
How many years do you think I'd be able to play the newest games that come out?
What do you think makes Qosmio x505 stand out from its competitors?
Is the x505 the best Toshiba model I can get for around 1,500?

Thanks. :) I know little about buying a gaming laptop, so if you can, try to "spell things out". Links are welcome as well.

    My responses are in RED.

Also watch this video review. I found it very helpful when I was in the same situation as you. It's a review of a similar model; but it's still a x505 series.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46k2xju8b68

Also be aware the q8102X and the q7272 both have non-1080p screen resolutions. However, the more expensive models do have 1080p.

Make sure to also look at: HP ENVY, Dell XPS, Alienware m17x or m18x, ASUS G73/74, MSI 17" model, and probably a few others.

Good luck and make sure to do all your "homework" before making your decision.

    Hello all,

The X500 owners lounge looks like it's pretty dead right now but I thought as a new user I'd drop in and quickly introduce myself.

I love my X505-Q870 and hope to keep it for as long as possible. From this forum I was able to find a copy of the X500 series maintenance manual and think it has a lot of useful information in it. I've already done a few upgrades on my laptop and am considering trying eGPU x2 or x4 since i can remove the SD card reader on slot 4 to theoretically make a 1/2/3/4 connection. Trying to install a GTX 460m card is also on the table but the cost is near even for either.

On a completely unrelated topic though, it occurred to me that there doesn't exist (maybe it just hasn't been found and made available online yet) a maintenance manual for the latter X50/5 laptops with Sandy Bridge motherboards & CPUs. Has anybody considered swapping in an SB motherboard? The newer models used the exact same chassis as the older ones after all so why shouldn't the motherboard be the same physically except built with a 6 series chipset. If this could be done it would open up 5 GB t/s lanes vs. 2.5 on the series 5 (for any eGPU enthusiast) in addition to the faster processor options. Although a higher end SB i7 chip is still north of the $500 mark, the MB can be had for $240 and the price on chips will eventually fall to affordable levels just as the first gen i-series did.

I'm perfectly happy with the 940XM I've swapped into mine so I'm in no hurry to do this but I ask just for future's sake as I think it would be great to keep this thing around for another 2+ years while maintaining at least some form of competitiveness with the newer units. On top of that it's much easier to bleed 3-400 dollars at a time instead of $1500+!

I find most parts have the cheapest prices at Spare Parts Warehouse

In this case, I used an X505-Q8104 (part# PQX34U-00N00V) as my dummy laptop and narrowed my results to motherboards. It shows two part numbers for motherboards but they have identical descriptions. I guess I could go one step further and contact them for information as to why this is.

I also checked on motherboards for another SB Qosmio, the X500-S1812, and the motherboard part numbers & descriptions are the same.

I'm waiting on a reply from them regarding the "call for price" on one of the two listed part #s

This is an excerpt from the reply I got back from SPW:

The link is to the board listed at $236.00 not the "Call for Price" board. Apparently it's an apparition they haven't removed from their site. *shrug*

Either way it looks like an affordable experiment if one already had a chip on hand or waited until the prices went down to buy one. If pictures of a completely dismantled sandybridge X500 and first gen i-core x500 could be found an answer could be had. :)

Yeah, I also wish there were detailed pictures/disassembly instructions for the X505. There's nothing wrong with mine, but it's always nice to have just in case.

Update from me and my X505-Q893: still running smooth as silk, only minor problems I've had have come from bad software. There were a couple of days a month ago when the CPU fan started making weird knocking sounds; I was sweating bullets, but it went away on its own and hasn't come back, so I guess it was just some dust that got in.When I first got this thing, the 18.4" screen size astounded me; after many months, I've gotten used to it, and now when I go to Best Buy and see the laptops there, they look so feeble, haha!

( related: I'm very disappointed Toshiba downsized the new Qosmio to 17.3" and slimmed it down to dv7-size, which makes cooling a huge problem, not to mention making it ugly as hell. My Q893 has never even come close to the temps I'm seeing in the X775 topic, and I'm constantly rendering stuff and playing games for hours. Seriously Toshiba, there's a reason the 17.3" G74 is as big as the 18.4" X505.)

I recently decided to try overclocking the GPU, and I was amazed at how easy and painless it is! Using Nvidia Inspector, overclocked to 800/1480/1600; I never had problems with performance, but I definitely noticed an improvement, not just in games but regular computing. Best of all, there's little or no change in temp.!

Complaints? Well, really not many TBH. USB3.0, but there's little hardware that supports that anyway. Additional audio jacks would've been nice (there's some electronic noise from the headphone jack, but that's true of every laptop) and they would've been better on the left side instead of the right. Would've been nice if the touch controls could be mapped to user programs. Extra RAM slots would've been great. The screen could be better, the 1080p HANNSTAR screen in the G74 beats it; however, my 1680x945 panel looks better than the G74's 1600x900 one, so I guess it all evens out.

Well actually, ONE MAJOR COMPLAINT: TOSHIBA, GO BACK TO 18.4", FIRE YOUR DESIGN ENGINEER, AND DON'T MAKE THE NEXT QOSMIO BUTT-UGLY!

Ah, you're lucky enough to have GTX 460M in yours, whereas I'm stuck with the GTS 360M. Although it's able to run everything I play at a high level now, I'm afraid that won't be the case much longer! I'd really like to put a 460 in but they cost 450 bucks and I have yet to see anybody "parting" one out. This is the only reason I've considered gathering parts for an eGPU.

Thing one thing that I do like about the X775 is that the media buttons are no longer on the left hand side where I can brush against them with my hand constantly! I hate that and I turned them off once but it didn't stay that way. There's nothiong like summoning three instances of Window Media Player when you're just trying to clean off your keyboard.

Hey Drag, I noticed we are running the same setup. Doesn't your laptop reset if you play a game? Mine does :( . Please let me know asap if there is anything that you know of that I can do to stop this ANNOYING issue! Thanx and hope you love yours as much as I love mine!

    Hi,
I am trying to run CS 1.6 on my Toshiba Qosmio x505-q893. Although it seems to have enough specs to run the game very smoothly, it is still not giving me a 100 fps. I know the screen wouldn't go beyond 60 Hz, but the game should run at 100 Hz at least but it runs on 59Hz. And when someone throws a smoke grenade, it drops even further. I need a fix!

Also, is it possible to override the screen default fps and make it run on 100Hz somehow?

I don't think the x500 GPU can be upgraded to the GTX 560m found in the x770 Qosmio; since not MXM and the GPU is probably a different size/shape.

Great pictures, very helpful I bookmarked it :) !!! BTW, it's a Chinese page, not Japanese.

Totally into this! :D I'm a minority over at OCN (Overclock.net) since nobody cares about a laptop over there. :p

I've had mine for a while now, just under a year actually, and have since upgraded the RAM to 8GB and primary drive to the Vertex 2. :D

I plan on further upgrading to the 840QM too.

On a lighter note, I had the 940XM in it for a short time. Took that out day three I think it was. Too hot for me. Even with the U3 it peaked at 95*C, might have been a reseating problem but the i5 now runs cooler than it did before so maybe not. :p

The stock drivers on the Qosmio line are a little dated. Update to the latest beta driver and you should be fine after that. Just remember it has to be a beta driver or else the install won't see your 460M.

Many of you may or may not have seen the GTX 460M in action. Stock settings are decent for a mobile solution, however they are not stuck there. According to notebookcheck.net, the GTX 460M scores around 6700 points in Vantage at stock. However after overclocking, my scores have jumped up to over 8500 points! Beyond the 560M and matching the GTX 470M!

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i5-460M Processor,TOSHIBA Qosmio X505 score: P8243 3DMarks

Overall score is P8243 which isn't bad for a year old laptop with a modestly overclocked GPU I think. :D

How's that for making the most of things huh? :D

I used Nvidia Inspector 1.9.5.5 to push the memory farther. Afterburner only allows for up to 1500 (3000). Inspector allows up to 3000 (6000) though I doubt it would ever grow close to that. :p

I leave mine stock and find I can play any game at near max settings and fet great FPS and image quality. I hate it when somewhere down the road a video card starts having issues and then your sorry you ever messed with it.
