Good to know imglidinhere. I may try this in the future; nice to see it can match the 470m![]()
To anyone else thinking of overclocking their GPU; OVERCLOCK AT YOUR OWN RISK
-
I have often oc the 460 to 800/1600 in MSI afterburner, and no problems exept a few games.
-
The best way to check if the overclock is stable is run Vantage. If it crashes, it's not stable. Simple enough.
-
Agreed, but neverless, the 460 is to slow with full hd as i have. But this laptop should do full hd well
MPX.no - Samsung 700G7A 17.3" Full HD LED 3D -
I'm rather dubious of any benchmark scores (their only use to me is comparing different chips), but I do overclock with Nvidia Inspector, 800/1600/1480. No temp difference from stock at all.
How stable is your overclock? And how much difference from the numbers I'm using? I may try it out. -
Wow, that's perfect SEVEN-UP!!! Repped!
-
I say that you run Vantage and get back to me on that. I scored 8524 for the GPU so ya.
My bandwidth for my memory is higher which is the primary reason for the huge score boost.
As for stability, I see no artifacts in Dead Island, which is optimized wonderfully, or AvP. Both run with the GPU @ 99% so there's no question if the clocks are stable.
-
Does anyone have the clock generator number for a q888 for setup of SetFSB?
Or know of a better way to set the FSB? -
After a long and drawn out search, I read that in a 505 the Gpu is socketed into the motherboard. In this case, would you then be able to change a 360m for a 460m provided it is the same size? I read this on another form that someone was going to attempt this!?!? His reasoning behind it was that newer 505s come with this upgrade making it possible? The same thing with the CPU, from a 760 he would go with a 900 series I7 upgrade?!?! Is there any truth to this at all?
I'm new here, and from what I found online, you guys have the most educated anwsers!! -
No, you can't upgrade the GPU on these machines. They're soldered onto the motherboard making it impossible to change around.
The CPU can be upgraded though. There are a few users here who have upgraded to the i7 940XM.
-
They're not in the SetFSB program yet. I contacted the maker about it and he would need the motherboard model number and the clock generator number to modify it. I couldn't find either.
-
I'm going to try to take mine apart tomorrow. I just hope I can find the correct numbers after I do. U have any idea where the motherboard number location would be?
-
Now with the 940xm, is that overclockable with the Intel Control pannel that you sleep right on the Intel site? That would all together take away the need for setfsb.
-
It's only overclockable if you have an unlocked bios, which these machines don't.
Technically yes, you can overclock the machine, but the voltage will remain at stock levels. -
I wouldn't take it apart for any reason unless you were going to replace something since it's a serious pain to do so.

The Sandy Bridge x505 Qosmios [q8_100 versions] have a new BIOS update. THIS ONLY APPLIES TO x505 q8_100 SERIES QOSMIOS; CPU = i7-2630QM:

Not sure what the above changes are. I'm not updating, unless I have a problem in the future. Just leaving info here so other owners are aware. -
I can confirm that the video card IS socketed, not soldered.
I removed it myself to reseat it(was trying to solve some freezing issues I was having)
I have x505 q880.
One interesting note, the freezing+BSOD I was having wasn't being fixed by anything. I cleaned, reseated everything in the motherboard and got nothing.
Then I tried the "stupid" idea of resetting the CMOS. Totally fixed now. -
Hey, I was wondering I own a x505-q892 and I had a few questions about the second bay. First being where is a place I can purchase a bracket to hold the hard drive in place. Second I'm thinking about getting an SSD to have my games on since I'm a pretty avid online gamer and I would enjoy fast load times, the question on this is would it be a good idea to put it in the second bay since it would most likely be a 64 GB SSD; or should I go with a larger size and put the OS on the SSD and just use the stock hard drive for my files that are not needed as much. I don't mind boot times as I usually put my computer on sleep or turn it on when I'm not at the computer so that isn't an issue just load times for games really.
The SSD I'm looking at is currently Crucial 64 GB m4 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s is this a good buy or are there better deals? I only really know of this brand and have always bought my hard drives from them, however this would be my first ever SSD so I'm not too savvy with them. Anyway all feedback is appreciated thanks in advance. =] -
Toshiba recommends to buy parts from this supplier: Epson, HP, Toshiba, Konica Minolta, Canon Parts & Accessories - National Parts Depot
However, I would also recommend this supplier: Laptop Parts & Repair, Notebook Computer Repair, Printer Parts - Spare Parts Warehouse
Also see this link for more info: Does all of the X505 2nd HDD bays take the same A0... - Toshiba Forums
For SSDs, a lot of people recommend buying a SSD that prices out around $1/GB. You may beable to find cheaper if you look for a SATA-II [3GB/s] drive, as your model can only attain SATA-II speeds [SATA-III will work, you just won't get the benefit of the extra speed].
In my opinion, I would get at least a 128GB SSD, so you can install your OS and have any other programs/files you use frequently on the SSD also. 64GB will work, but it will be mainly for your OS and a few programs you use often; will need to use you existing harddrive for storage.
Good luck -
Hello,
I have X500 and today i have noticed that space key is not working correctly. When i press it on right or in the middle then it works fine as expected. But when i press it on left then it pushes just on this side (not whole button) and no character shows on screen. Thats the only problem with keyboard i got.
Anyone came across this issue?
How can i fix this? How can i take this button off?
Thanks a lot! -
Could be a bad button.
Probably the only way to fix it is with a new keyboard OR just get used to it; either way it sucks. -
Looks like i will need to use warranty and forget about my lovely notebook for about 2 weeks because of the stupid key ;(
-
I'm a new owner of a x505-q880. Thought I'd let everyone know that I changed out the stock wifi card for an Intel Ultimate-N 6300 today and it seems to have solved the 5ghz problem. It also seems to be picking up way more wifi connections than the old card.
The laptop doesn't seem to have a third antenna cord but I hooked up the two that were on the old card the the #1 and #2 connections and left the #3 connection open. If anyone knows if there is a third antenna cord hidden somewhere please reply, but it doesn't seem to be necessary.
It was very easy and took all of 10 minutes. Just remove the keyboard and you can see the card roughly where the backspace key would be. It's held in place by two screws and is almost as easy as RAM is to swap out. -
Oh cool! So the laptop DOES recognize the other wifi cards?
Wicked!
I'll probably upgrade to something like the 6230 since I can grab one for $18 off ebay.
-
Technically any laptop should recognize any mini-pci express wireless card with the same number of antennas. The Advanced-N 6230 will definitely work in a Qosmio x500 series and will solve the 5 GHz problem and the speed increase is well worth it. I'd just never put a card with three antenna connections in a laptop with only 2 antenna cords before.
Just make sure you download the drivers before installing the wireless card, unless you have a USB wifi adapter or another computer. I totally forgot to do that but luckily I was at work and I had a USB wifi adapter around to help trouble shoot other computers. -
Well the overclock I had going is now deemed unstable due to the numerous driver crashes and the pink screen of death (PSOD) I just suffered and had to do a hard shutdown of the laptop.
I've since then decided to attempt to find another GTX 460M that fits in this particular socket in an attempt to get a GPU that can be overclocked even mildly.
Does anyone know of a site that deals in laptop GPUs and the like? Ebay doesn't count. -
Good luck in finding a used/new card unless you get lucky and find someone parting one out. You could call the Tosh parts depot to try to get an idea what this would cost new for reference.
Me, myself and I would just save for the next big thing. Unless the GPU's are a dime a dozen you are looking at big bucks for 15% OC.. if your lucky? -
hello,
LET ME START OFF BY SAYING GREAT SITE. surfed around for a while before i made this thread, very informative site. sorry for all the question's but wanted to get all in one shot.
i have some question's about the TOSHIBA Qosmio X505-Q8100XB hoping someone can help me out. bare with me if i say something stupid i am not very computer savvy. what i am wanting to do is upgrade the processor chip. right now it has a i5 2.3ghz, it is the second gen so i know it has the LGA 1155 socket in it. i want to put a i7 some where between 2.8ghz and a 3.4ghz depending on cost. will the even work and, if so is it as simple as just trading out chip's or is there a lot more to it? i am also going to boost up the ram to 8mb. ive read and seen advertized this same line of x505's with 16mb's of ram. how are they able to do it, from what ive read on the spec's it's only upgradeable to 8mb's. i am also thinking of upgrading to a 120,128 or 256 SSD once again depending on what i can get it for. and is putting in the bigger SSD card worth the money and will it be a noticeable change? if anyone knows, how big of a jump will i get by going with the i7 over the i5? i know someone will say just buy a new system but i bought this used for a third of what a new one cost's. and with having the Geforce GTX 460m and some other stuff i can easily put several hundred dollars into it and have a really smokin machine and still be ahead of buying a comparable new one. one other thing i looked up intel on wikipedia i know that's not the most reliable source but on there they don't list a i7 2.20ghz chip, but yet you can get them in just about any computer. thanks to anyone that responds. -
It should be as simple as switching CPUs.
The i5 and i7 x505 Qosmios use the same BIOS, so it should be allowed to use a i7 in a i5 Qosmio [many with a Qosmio x770 have done this]. By i7 I'm assuming you mean i7-Quad-Core, as there are also i7-Dual-cores for laptops.
However, you may be limited to the first reiteration of the Sandy Bridge mobile processors [ 2630QM, 2720QM, 2820QM, 2920XM]. There was a refresh of Sandy Bridge mobile processors that launched late 2011 that may-not be supported: these include 2670QM, 2760QM, 2860QM and others [the x505 was no longer produced and was discontinued by the time the 2nd reiteration of SB processors launched].
As for the 16GB ram, I have no idea; from my understanding 8GB is the max for Toshibas.
Good luck and keep us posted with any results. -
1.) You are mistaken about the socket. It's Socket G2, not LGA 1155. Massive difference between those two. The first generation line is Socket G1 just for reference knowledge.
2.) As for the i7, the chipset used on the revised X505 line will support up to the 45w second generation i7s. Both dual and quad core models.
3.) The X505 line supports all known SSDs regardless of size and make. I would say that you should get at least a 120/120GB drive for your operating system and then just stick with a standard 500GB/750GB Hard Drive for your data. That's what I've got.
4.) I cannot say for certain, but the jump in performance in games won't be that substantial since the hyperthreading your i5 employs already mimics the performance of a quad core and is lightning fast as is. It boosts up to 2.8GHz on both cores in games from the stock 2.3GHz setting automatically which is why you play games so well. It's called Turbo Boost 2.0 and is considerably better than the previous version on the first generation line.
5.) The best place to get a new processor is probably going to be Ebay. There's no other place I can think of that you would want to get a new processor anyhow. I say that the best option for you would to get the i7-2720QM. Here's one for less than $200 shipped: INTEL i7 2720QM 3.3GHz quad ES mobile CPU processor, Fast free shipping from USA | eBay -
hey guys, so lately ive noticed that my qosmio x505 q8100x speakers sometimes makes this kind of crackling noise or like a stutter when i play videos and games, anyone have any idead why this is happening?
-
Sounds like the "loud fan" syndrome [is there a rattling sound?]. This is caused by a dirty fan; can try using compressed air to clean it out.
Here's other threads about the issue:

Good luck -
haha i knew my fan problems were related to this, but the thing is this only started happening even though my fan has been rattling and sounding loud for a few months now
-
I've replaced the fan twice and the problem still occurs. It's nothing to be worried about. The last one has been doing it since September and there's no problem currently with the machine. I think it's just how it's mounted on the case.
As a side note, I have upgraded my wifi card to the Centrino-N 6300! I only had two antennae to use with it but I can reach clear across the yard to my router from outside and maintain three bars. (~75 feet!
) Whereas the other crap wifi card had to be within ~25 feet for me to even find the router.
Not bad for $35 shipped off ebay with only two of the three antennae attached. Supposedly you can get even farther with all three connected.
-
seems like my video card is going bad, the driver has been crashing a lot lately and it might be related to the crackling noise my speakers make when im watching videos and playing games
-
You stated you have a q8100X, is your warranty still valid? [the q8100X launched in April 2011, 1 year ago]. If so, I would give Toshiba a call ASAP.
-
yeah i do, do you know how i get it to them since i live in alaska
-
Hello I have a x505-q892 that came with 4gb of ram I plan on upgrading to 8gb I was just wondering can anyone confirm that 1333 will work in this notebook?
-
seems like the problem was fixed when i did a clean reinstall of windows 7
-
If that's the case, then it sounds like your previous problem was probably a faulty driver installation.
-
Does anyone know if the gpu of qosmio x500 with a gts 360m gpu can be replaced with a gtx 460m ? I have a friend with one of them but as far as I know I told him no since its different chipset though in theory if they fit and the bios recognises it it might work..
-
There were many x505 Qosmios that has the same intel chipset as the x505 Qosmios with the GTS 360m; both have the first generation i-core chipset [HM5X series]. [example: x505 q882 vs x505 q892.]. They also use the exact same BIOS.
q882 [GTS 360m]: Model Content Page
q892 [GTX 460m]: Model Content Page
The big problems are:
1. Is the GPU soldered onto the motherboard? [many say no, but no absolute proof].
2. Where to buy the Toshiba GTX 460m?
I would say it's possible, but not probable. The new GTX 460m GPU would most likely cost $300-$400, which your friend could use towards a new gaming laptop [The new generation of GPUs are much better than the 4XX series; a 28nm GPU would be much better than a 40nm GTX 460m card].
Good luck -
Thanks for the reply! Indeed it seems possible but not viable!
-
Honestly, NOTHING Toshiba has put out before the X505 or since has anywhere near the aesthetic beauty of our laptops, at least in my opinion. It is one of the reasons I don't want to upgrade, though admittedly a very small concern. But damn I am typing on this now and it is just gorgeous!
And, yeah, I am loving the 18.4 inch screen. While I know we are only talking 1.1 inches, that is another reason I am not looking to jump on the upgrad bandwagon.
I haven't had a problem with the fan noise. It isn't bothersome at all. I have, however, had problems with this laptop since I bought it. I just recently got a warranty repair out of warranty because I reported the problem just before my warranty expired. I was getting some serious slow downs and intermittent freezing, so I drove to a Toshiba authorized repair shop and it turned out the HD needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, this not only required a brand new HD and complete re-install, but somehow, for reasons passing understanding, Toshiba sent the shop a HD with nothing on it, so the guy could not do a system restore, which sucked.
Anyway, since then, I am getting a lot of blue screen "crash dumps" when I close the lid and put the laptop into suspend, which is really annoying. In the past, this only happened very rarely. Now, it seems to happen like every 3rd or 4th time I put the laptop into suspend/sleep mode. As soon as I open the lid, I get the blue crash dump screen and it reboots. So now I have to figure out what in the hell is going on here. -
That's surprising, the only time my X505 acted up was because of a bad Nvidia driver.
If it isn't a hardware issue, maybe try a reinstall with a clean Win7 disk ( link) and you can add the Toshiba utilities later. -
Does the crashing also happen when shutting down and booting up?
Instead of sleeping/hibernating, try using only shutdown/startup. See if the problem still occurs.
If the problem goes away, I would think it's a driver issue [with what I don't know]. -
And make sure to update to the new Nvidia 301.42 WHQL drivers. The previous 296.10 gen was unstable and caused some crashes for me.
-
Also I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to swap out the gpu like maybe the 370m?
-
I think the x505 Qosmio GPUs can only be swapped amongst each other: GTS 360m and GTX 460m [in other words, you can only use a GPU from a Toshiba x505 Qosmio. The same model GPU from a different manufacturer will probably not work].
However, taking this route [using Toshiba GPUs] will be very expensive; a GTX 460m will probably cost $500 [not to mention a GTX 460m is still very outdated]. Your best bet is to just save up and buy another laptop.
