On my X505-Q830 it defenitely is glossy. Basically, the whole laptop is in this glossy black fusion finish (save for some thin metallic red insert bezels).
Edit: to be absolutely precise, the keys are less glossy then the rest of laptop body - it's not a mirror finish, however it's still quite smooth black and very prone to fingerprints.

can some one already using 850 model tell - NITS. how much it is??
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
Ingvarr, thanks for re clarifying thats what i was thinking.
It should have high NITS. My guess would be 250 or more. -
I went to Best Buy to look at the Satallite's 1680x940 or whatever panel that I assume the Q830 shares. Pretty unimpressive to say the least. My Dell 1705 1900x1200 panel (that I am desperate to replace) looks WAY better. Way deeper blacks and screen angles.
Might have to invest in a desktop system...
Probably one reason the Q830 configuration is so cheap is because of a garbage panel. Sad to see on a Qosimo system... -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
It cant be the same display though. I mean as you stated for the 830 maybe but im sure the 1080 one is really nice the users in here so far liked theres.
-
Personally I preferred slightly inferior panel on Q830 to insane resolution of full HD. 250M is a good card, but it won't handle gaming at Full HD res. And I prefer to play in native res, without losing crispness on rescaling.
Also even for 18", full HD pushes DPI almost to 120, so on default everything becomes too small. And sadly, High DPI even in Windows 7 has little niggling problems here and there (for instance same thing - can scale text in browser well, but can't scale pictures without making them slightly blurry). I had X200 with 1680x1050 for 2 years, so know this very well.
I would say the screen on X505-Q830 exactly that is - nothing special (for laptop). But it nowhere near bad, has an optimal res and 100% worth it's price. -
How do people rate the X500 ?
I`m in the UK and the top model here i believe is the X500 10T

I need a laptop for about 6 months and i was considering this one, any feedback would be appreciated. How does the Intel Core i7-720QM 1.6 - 2.8GHz perform, is this processor a quad ? How would it compare against a Q9300 or a Dell Extreme X9000 core duo ?
Looking deeper at the spec, why have Toshiba only put 5400rpm hard drives in this machine which seems to let it down a bit, also it should have come with windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and not home. Can you get 7200rpm hard drives direct from the factory or are you stuck with 5400 rpm ones and can you ask for windows 7 ultimate 64 bit instead ? -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
Yes, i7 is Quad.
It would kill the Q9000 in benchmarks. The QX9300 is close to it though but i7 is still faster. Just get an SSD drive or a regular 500GB HDD and sell the drive in this one.
Ingvarr have you tried O'clocking the card? Im sure this one can overclock quite a bit, that can make it quite a bit faster. -
I dont really see a need to overclock yet
-
Is there any sort of customization offered by Toshiba for these? I really want the screen from the Q850, but I'm not that interested in the SSD or extra 2GB RAM included in the $400 premium up from the Q830.
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
Yeah, i can see where you are coming from, i never overclocked my 9800 GTS since i had my laptop. -
I'll bet the 1080 is really good as well. My old Toshiba screens were excellent. I suspect this 1600x900 is a dog however.

Guys please accept my apologies if I am posting my questions in wrong thread but i have no choice. My problem is that I plan to buy the notebook through my sister who lives in New York and then let her courier it to the country where I live. So I need to know:
a) If the warranty includes international coverage.
b) What is the approximate size of the box. (to calculate the courier cost).
An alternative for me would be to find a reseller who ships internationally, but I am not able to find one yet (expect xotic PC, who don't have this notebook). Any suggestions are welcome.
Any sort of help will be a great help!!! -
Whats the noise levels like on the Qosmio X500 ? Are the fans quiet, are they on all the time or do they just come on when required ?
I noticed it only has 5400 rpm hard drives which is a bit suprising seeing as its aimed at the high end market, would it invalidate the warranty if you changed them to 7200 rpm hard drives ? -
Hard drives and Ram never void a warranty ..
-
Every spec sheet I've seen for the X505 line says their drives are 7200 rpm.
-
In the Uk the Qosmio X500 drives are 5400 rpm, i don`t know about the US. On the link below is the highest spec X500 version they do here with a screen res of 1920 x 1080 and 8GB of ram.
Here is the UK spec:
http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/product/Qosmio-X500-10T/1075495/toshibaShop/false/ -
Ah, sorry, didn't realize the foreign specs were different. Weird.
-
The fans are quiet, and there is additional option in Power Management to make them even more silent - an option allows you downclock CPU when it overheats, instead of speeding up fans.
Generally they very rarely stop, but mostly run at very low speed - generally below HDD noise. -
My turn for a question - Toshiba's spec sheets have listed the native res of the Q850 as both 1920x1080 and 1920x1200 (1080p and 1200p/WUXGA). Can someone who's got one tell me which figure is accurate? It's not hugely important, since I've already placed my order (yay), but I'd like to know.
-
Q850 is 1920x1080 (16:9 1080p)
1920x1200 is 16:10, it would be incorrect aspect ratio for X505 screen, which is 16:9 physically. -
I just bought this beast/machine. One problem though, the volume on the speakers is kind of iffy. Like, it will kind of wave in volume, sometimes fine, sometimes kind of quiet, instead of a constant stream if you get what I mean? Is anyone else getting this? If not, how do I fix it?
Cheers. -
racerace1, Yeah, the Conexant Pebble drivers suck. I had drop out and all kinds of crap playing games. I uninstalled/deleted the driver and rolled back to the Microsoft driver and those issues went away for me. Can't hurt to try. You can always redownload it from Tosh's site and reinstall.
-
Cheers man, did the trick. Yeah, exactly the same things as you were saying. +1 rep for you if that makes you feel good
. Love ya!!
Edit: At the guy who was asking about international warranty, I'm pretty sure that the warranty only applies to that continent. Ie european, american. So if you decide to buy from america, you'll have to ship it back there. The box size is about the width of a desktop, and the length, breadth of say, .5/6m. If you're in the U.K I would buy it from U.S, cheaper- plus you only pay VAT, no customs duty. Could save around £200 or so. -
But only if you are ok with US keyboard I must add, a lot of UK people forget about this
Granted, it still cheaper to buy US one and replace keyboard with UK one, but no parts are really available for X505 yet.
(not a problem for me since I wanted US keyboard in the first place). -
PrimeTimeAction Notebook Evangelist
Thank you very much racerace1 for the reply. And Ingvarr i am not worried about keyboard, i won't be doing much typing anyway
But warranty is a problem. Now my mind tells me to go ahead with Asus G51J which has global warranty but my heart tells me to take the gamble of my life and go for Qosmio X505. Lets see who wins
Anyway you guys are great and I hope I stay in Qosmio X500 owners lounge
-
Mate, the U.S keyboard and U.K keyboard are almost identical anyways. It just has a hash instead of £ and the @ sign is up at the 2. Just put it on the U.K keyboard layout and you're sorted anyways. I don't see the issue being honest.
-
Race, glad it worked for you as well.
I wiped my machine in the beginning and installed 7 Ult from scratch and partitioned the drives like I wanted. My only remaining issue is the stupid webcam. As Toshiba released it, the webcam was fine, after I rebuilt my way, it refuses to pick it up. Very odd. Not concerned tho, I'd probably never use it, but it does irk me.
-
I just found the drivers on the toshiba website. Have you tried that?
-
Hi,
With regards to purchasing outside of the UK can you recommend any good US suppliers who are prepared to ship to our side of the world? Most of the vendors i.e. CircuitCity etc dont seem prepared to send outside of the States.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. -
I've bought mine here, and got it in 3 days
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...0K00H_Qosmio_X505_Q830_Notebook_Computer.html
They also have Q850 in stock. -
Thanks. Just checked however the Q850 is listing as 'out of stock'.
-
I noticed your in the UK, did you get hit with import tax as that place you bought from seems to be in the US ?
How much did it cost in total to get it to your door in the UK in english pound sterling ?
Whats the major differences between the US one and the UK, did you have to buy a different power adapter etc ? Whats the warranty situation incase anything goes wrong, do you have to ship it back to the US ? -
As I've said, there is no Customs Duty on imported laptops to the U.K. You only pay VAT which is 15%. So it's about £150 for this laptop to import it in. The only difference I think is a 7200rpm HD, instead of a bigger 5400rpm, which is what you anyways. The power adapter has a standard 2 plug input, like the number of eight shape. You can get a uk plug for one of these things very cheap. You'll probably actually have a spare one lying around from a dvd player/something anyways.
Your other answers are on the previous page. -
Can you recommend any US sites that deliver to the UK? -
There are also other differences:
- UK model has fingerprint scaner, while US model doesn't
- UK model has blu Ray writer, while US has only blu Ray reader (both support DVD writing/reading).
No import duty, only VAT
Express delivery via UPS was about 70 quid.
With all costs included it still did cost me significantly cheaper then buy UK model (which is not available yet anyway and will not be for a while), I wanted US keyboard, dont care for blu ray writer, and loss of fingerprint scanner still tenfold covered by money win.
I did post link to the shop I've bought from above. -
So what would the rough cost be to get a Qosmio X505-Q850 to your door in the UK, the site on the link at the top of this page has the X505-Q850 listed for $1,799.00.
-
I just went to their order form - it will show total cost with delivery in USD.
Convert it to GBP and multiply by 1.15 -
The webcam drivers don't do crap. I've tried several times. no worries.
-
Hi everyone ... great thread. Two quick questions.
(1) Based on some reviews from users, I've read the wifi card is weak. Can anyone verify how they do with wireless?
(2) Costco had a version of this x505-q832 which is essentially the x505-q830 for roughly same price with a 2 year warranty versus the 1 year warranty. all other specs the same. It is no longer on the site and wondering if anyone knows why? Was curious is there was some kind of recall over the wifi issue.
Thanks all! -
Just received my Toshiba X500 (720-8Gb-1TB-BR(R/W))
I can upgrade for free to 3 year pick-up and return waranty.
But there's a problem with my X500.
Under the power button is a fan, that make a heavy grinding noise when de pc is turned on. Only if I let de back-left foot dangle over the table corner, the noise stops. (There's probably a fan mounted wrong) Twisting the base makes the noise stop, putting it flat on the table makes the fan grind.
Waiting for my vendor to get things in order with Toshiba. (Vendor points at Toshiba for repair, Toshiba points at vendor to have him handle it as a DOA)
This morning I was happy. This was Qosmio day. Now.. I'm a bit less happy.... -
I just imported a laptop from the states using https://www.parcel2go.com/import-services.aspx
Basically you check out with a particular address and pretend to be an american.
The item is shipped and when it arrives its weighed and you then decide how you want to ship it.
Done it twice and there are multiple other companies that do this. -
Most likely a wire inside (like fan power supply) touching a fan slightly.
-
Usually a blank section under memory in GPU-Z denotes GDDR5, so yeah it's GDDR5.
-
It's not "bad" but it's most definitely not the best internal WIFI I've had on a laptop. I wouldn't expect to see a recall or anything, but I'd have preferred an Intel ABG series card over this one.
-
Honestly I dont see why people think WiFi in X505 is "bad"
I still have my old X200 (with Intel), and it sees exactly same amount of neighborhood networks with exactly the same signal levels as X505 does. -
My signal is quite a few dB lower than my x205-sli3 in the exact same spot. At the office, I cannot even maintain a connection to the wifi repeater in the exact same spot.
That's how I base my opinions.
That pretty much says it's either the WIFI card or antenna design in this machine. I didn't say bad, just not the strongest performer compared to others. -
Either that or yours has a fault maybe?
EDIT: I just has confirmed again that I can consistently see more networks available on my X505 than on old X200. Some weakest networks visible from X505 is never ever even visible on X200. -
During gameplay, I sometimes touch the multimedia touchpad. That often kicks me out of the game.
Can the touchpad be disabled. I hardly use it.
Also touching the functions on the touchpad (vulume up/down) has this very anoying "Beep" sound.
Can this be disabled too?? -
Found the way how to disable the beeping sound and the touch keys :
In the Toshiba folder find HWsetup. Under button settings you can either disable the key all together or just the sound.
It's a shame, the technology is great but the location of the touch keys is just very impractical.
I kept touching the keys with my left little finger.
