Toshiba has screwed up thermal paste in these laptops. ;)
I want to replace it too, but every body here know that is not so easy as usual with Qomsio-series.

yea i know first hand. im dissasembling the qosmio right now. so that i can reapply the thermal paste. still not done yet. this thing is a to dissasemble. im using my old cooler master premium paste. if that doesnt help, im buyin arctic cooling mx2. that should solve the thermal problem.

    well it worked..... kinda.....
the temperature dropped to 89/90c.... still not sattsfied. im gonna buy that mx2 from arctic cooling and see if that helps. DAMMIT..... one more dissasembly..... ugh.....

    Edit....

after like a half an hour/45 min the temp dropped to 72c... guess the cooling paste had to set. now im sattisfied. you should have seen the giant chunk of gray paste toshiba puts on yer gpu. still batter than acer (who forget to remove the plastic seal from the heatsink) they really are a bunch of apes with bone hammers, who fix youre laptops.

    thanx for the support kardash....

I use one of these for my Qosmio X300, http://www.gadgettastic.com/2007/10/21/cool-gadgets-magic-idea-notebook-usb-cooling-fan/ Ive attached it to the left of the vents (on looking at the back) This way the normal fan can still have the same airflow as before but now this extractor fan can suck the air out from the opposite side. They should of put 2 fans in this notebook to start with!
Anyway the temperature drop with this on full speed is about 8-10C lower, im now seeing temps of about 75C at full load...

This is for all q706 owners or owners of a qosmio with 2 9800M GTS's and a 9400M G. Tell Dox what drivers you are using, your computer, and your performance so far. he has hybrid drivers but soon will release better ones with more help.

also with the qosmio disassembly, i may have to do it again....but im wondering with the GPU, how did you remove the heatsink with all the thermal pads? it wouldnt come off on mine :(

Use an old credit card or some other plastic thin card and use that to pry it off very slowly you would be best to run something like furmark first to get the temps right up. (This will loosen the sinks off the chips a bit when warm.) You could do this with the laptops top plastic cover off so you can quickly remove the GPU before it cools too much. - Good Luck

hi, new registration, but i have been a lurker for a while. currently i have an x305-q706. using the 185.85 desktop drivers with a self modded inf and vista ultimate x64. these are the scores i get currently, hoping to get a 2.8Ghz cpu sometime this year, maybe after the prices come down some.

    driver version cpu gpu

    185.85 2267MHz 600/799/1500

    3dmark06 10025
    sm2 4413
    sm3 5305
    cpu 2015

    3dmark Vantage p8154
    GPU 6931
    CPU 17325

    185.85 2550MHz 720/950/1750

    3dmark06 11199
    sm2 4955
    sm3 5876
    cpu 2263

    3dmark Vantage p9188
    GPU 7821
    CPU 19321

i can overclock with these settings:
2550MHz for the Cpu and 720/950/1750 for the GPU's, also changeing the mem settings to tras=18, trcd=6, trp=6, trc=24 using ntune

Hi Exile1975, you actually have them working? Ive tried eveyrthing and then some, but get errors constantly. If you have a copy of that modded inf id be very happy to try it out wink wink.

BTW did you mod it yourself? I am not sure were i need to mod it, when i install the latest hybrid drivers, all it allows me to do is to install the Nvidia HIRES sound driver, thats it. The video part does not install, also if i copy the modded inf from laptop2go in the video part directory after unpacking, it still fails. With my specs i should be getting kick results.

    Thanks

    Good day guys!
Nautis1100 managed to release drivers for x305-706. They are much more stable and 2 times faster than Toshiba stock once. If you are interested in drivers that shows around 8100 points in 3d Mark Vantage Performance preset, PM him in laptopvideo2go.com forum. I'm testing this driver for 3 weeks already - it is just great, only 1 really sad thing i noticed - is that not possible to disable SLI mod - but it does not affects games :D

if you download the drivers from http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_185.85_whql.html.
(I got better scores using the desktop drivers than the laptop ones)

extract them, and open the nv_disp.inf file.

look for this header in the inf:
    [NVIDIA.Mfg.NTamd64.6.0]

and just below it paste these lines:
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0628.01% = Section003, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0628&SUBSYS_FF001179
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0862.01% = Section003, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0862&SUBSYS_FF001179

    now look for:
    [Strings]

    and paste:
    NVIDIA_DEV.0628.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS"
    NVIDIA_DEV.0862.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G"

    save the inf.

    boot into safe mode.

    uninstall the nvidia display drivers.

    reboot

    install the 185.85 drivers .

hybrid sli and powermizer seem to be working well so far, coming on only when the should.

good luck, and let me know if it works for you.

Them drivers Exile do work well i have to say. didn't get an increase in 3dmark but games do run much smoother than toshiba ones and its stable! One thing though, the fan speed is an issue as the system idles at around 50c and the fan only kicks in when it reaches beyond that which i dont like. Before the fans kept going and kept it in the low 30s. Anyway to manually configure the fans?

hmmm, i dont personally notice a difference in the fan speeds on my rig. the dev id's i included above will only work for the 706, and 708 i think. as for the temps they do run a bit higher with these drivers than toshibas stock, but these are DESKTOP drivers forced to work on this rig, also the increased performance will always equal more heat produced. you could fool with the 185.85 laptop drivers, just use the dev id's above and add them to the NVCO.inf. but i forget which section to use. i got lower temps with them, but also lower scores.
also if you are using a 706/708 have you updated the bios to 1.60? it doesnt seem to make a difference to me, but you never know.

Bios 1.06 is a complete mystery to me too, i love the expalanation as to what it changes! Nothing, nada, not even a "if your having this prob, update it" otherwise dont warning. It was installing even before i was ready, thought for sure it would unziop, next thing ya know, its installing and dont turn off your system lol

One thing i will say, if you go to the Europe toshiba site, it is 10 times better than the Canadian version, even the Americam version isnt as good. Toshiba needs to take a lesson from OCZ and their forums.

your score seems kinda low, i have the same specs gpu wise, but my cpu is 2.26Ghz not overclocked. i get:

    3dmark06 10060
    sm2 4449
    sm3 5327
    cpu 2010

with a 2.4Ghz proc shouldnt you get higher? if i overclock my cpu to 2.4Ghz:

    3dmark06 10484
    sm2 4562
    sm3 5546
    cpu 2135

also, everyone should check this out:

Ya it does seem low, not sure why though. I had to RMA the ram, so im back to 7-7-7-20 with the stock ram. Also is the win7 version you posted going to work for Vista 64? I think a lot of whats going on with my laptop is the stupid CPU at 6x, running slower because of power saving options by Toshiba. From my research, i do not bel;eive its possible to turn this off.

BTW if anyone knows of a bios version that will open up this laptop a little, let me know, ill give it a shot ;)

    Thanks

Start -> (Search for) Command Promt -> (write) powercfg.cpl,1 (enter) -> Then a windows will show up you can edit Toshiba's power saving settings there.
(NB: Not tried at Windows7, I use this for changing the power button at start menu, form Sleep to Shut Down...

Don't forget to run as Administrator.

    Cheers.

guys, i don't usually bother ppl with this kind of questions so sorry for it, but here it goes...

I'm banging my head over and over if i should or should not exchange the q9000 for the qx9300. If only the bios let you change multipiers the awnser was quick but since it does not... and I hate overclocks made from software. For me it has to be made from bios !!So will the extra mhz be worth it?? i'm not talking money, i'm talking the "i have to open up this thing again and for all the fuzz gain "nothing"!!!

So the question is. would you also exchange it ?? (forget the money) would you exchange it because it really is better, i mean, you would notice diferences for e.g. on the lowest fps ?? I really don't care if fps change from 150 to 180 or 3dmark goes up 3000 marks!! I only care about the lower fps value. when i see 25fps would i see 35 ??

I don't know how many of you have the qx9300 and i'm in hope that you guys can help me on deciding.

Also, because i really think that the q9000 is a botleneck for the sli 9800 or im i totally wrong ?

Agree with this one I have marked!
Don't know about your Q9000 but I think my T9600 is botleneckling my 9800M GTX!
