After reading a few things about Vista 64 I decided to perform an "out of box recovery "and choose to install the 64 bit version instead of 32. All I have to say is wow, I feel pretty dumb for handicapping my laptop with the 32 bit version just so I could run a couple software programs that are not compatible with 64.

Here is an update of my specs with Vista 64

You cannot upgrade to 3 GPU's. The 3 GPU's are not in SLi. One is a 9400M IGP like in the Macbook Air and is an integrated card: IGP = integrated graphics port. The 9400M is only for less power consumption and longevity of the 9800 GTS's; it turns on when the 9800's are not in use -- example: not playing a game, just web browsing. This must be due to the powermizer feature, by the way.

    "1. CPU

    - Stay with the P series, ex. P8600, P9500, or go for an X9100 or the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9200 or QX9300. However, there may be problems with the 2 chips at the top of CPU and the heatsink fitting."

I read the initial post on this thread that stated the above is true. I have three questions in regards to the above quote:

    1. Is a CPU upgrade on a 305-706 difficult to do for a laptop newbie?

    2. Are there any known downsides to upgrading your CPU from the stock, Laptop Toshiba CPU? IE: Increased Heat, warranty affected, damaging motherboard, lower use expectancy, etc...

    3. The X305-706 came with a P8400 2.26 Core 2 Duo. On the assumption I were to upgrade it to a higher processor, at what speed would I see a noticeable performance upgrade in Games and Video Rendering? 2.5Ghz? 2.8 Ghz? I know processor upgrades are expensive, and i am not financially prepared to upgrade. But down the road, when some of the higher end CPUs come down in price, i'd like to know which cpu would be the best bang for the buck. It's the reason I bought the X305-706...

    Hey everyone

Bought the P8400 canadian model of the X300 and I'm debating whether to keep it. Bang for buck it is definetly a deal ($1600 at futureshop....oddly enough they are the only ones that carry the 2.3 Ghz model). I want something that will last me a long time so when I hear talk about updgrading CPU, GPU, and RAM I hope its true.

Could someone who has done upgrades to these components please let me know

what components they installed (e.g Extreme CPU, 8gigs ram, etc),

    how much it cost

the level of difficulty (e.g is it the same as updgrading a desktop, which I would rank as easy)

what are the maximum upgrades possible given the motherboard

I've heard there are walkthroughs on the net as to how to do it....if anyone has a link to one of these I would really appreciate it.

Whether or not I hold on to the laptop is based entirely on if its upgradeable (and buying a skin for the top...too much red)

Also I'm new to 64bit...is it possible to dual boot 64bit Vista with 32bitXP (software compatibility issue is my reason for the dual boot)

    thanks everyone!

i would suggest at least a 2.5ghz., i would go for an extreme edition. especially if you have SLi GPU's. a better cpu could definitely help. it is probably the weakest component in the laptop. so i would go for at least a 2.5ghz. get something justifiable.

1999.00 at toshiba direct and while not the most attractive thing in the world its a darn good deal for SLI 9800s, great resolution screen and the sound on these things are off the chain. Im almost tempted to grab one of these if i can just get past the odd color choice they chose for it .

Ive been on the fence for the OCZ , a sager of sorts or this one . This thing has all the bells and whistles and supports Quadcores . Just wish it came in black :).

Toshiba really messed up when they designed only this one color scheme, very unique but also very tasteless imo, imagine how many more they would sell if it only came in one solid color, the flames on it look almost pink at some angles.....why Toshiba, why! What the hell were they thinking.

Yep, if it were solid red without the flames I'd have bought it already. I'm still considering buying it and skinning it with something more subtle.

Ah you guys are just nitpicking. I've gotten so many compliments from people at Starbucks. The problem is when you see it on display against all the carbon copy notebooks it seems outta place, but on it's own it's a site to behold. You know like a white Tiger. And I would kill to have a q708 with 3 dam gpus.

Okay there's a new BIOS update version 1.7 for the x305. It updates the nvidia video bios and I was wondering what is nb9e-gs and nb9p-gs, since that's what's being updated. Will it boost performance for the gpus? I just updated and I'll try and run 3dm6 to see if I get any performance increase.

edit: no increase in benchmark or performance.

That BIOS update was for almost every X305 except the Q706 and Q708.

    Qosmio X305-Q701, X305-Q702, X305-Q703, X305-Q704, X305-Q705, X305-Q7051, X305-Q707

I'm guessing it's because those are the only two models with the SLI gpu's.

I have a Qosmio 305-705 bought 11/07/08. I have partitioned it at primary=80 gig and the rest on the second partition. Should I have cut it in half (approx 160 & 160) in order to utilize all its features (like video media and such) or will 80 gig for primary partition be fine? I would like to get this right now so that I don't have to mess with it again, before I start loading it up with games and all the other stuff that I buy. Any help would be apreciated.

I have not been able to find any place selling these caddys other than ebay, however if you call Toshiba, I am sure they can transfer you to the appropriate line and sell it to you from there. Also, to my dismay, i found out that the hard drive caddy doesnt necessarily fit in the second spot. The original hard drive just wouldnt fit with the caddy in the second spot. So, i just put 1 sheet of plastic and some foam in between them, so less noise and heat and it doesnt wobble as much.

My only complaint now about my Q701 (goes for all models though): the touchpad texture is REALLY annoying on my fingertips. Makes it very inconvenient to use without a mouse. But now that I bought a 42" HD tv that I use with an HDMI cable and my Qosmio, I should be able to leave it in one place and use my older laptop as a true mobile computer!

This thing looks great pushing World of Warcraft in 1080 graphics! But my TV speakers suck (low end TV) so until I hook up a surround sound system, I keep audio through my Qosmio speakers.

Also, trying to decide which computer game to buy to really test this thing out. Is Crysis a good game to play? I've only seen it used as a test for graphics capabilities, but not heard anything about the actual gameplay yet.

The only thing you need to do is get another cable or adapter to fit into an American power socket. The power supply ("brick") can handle all voltages so that is not a problem. But since outlets all over the world are different, you'll just have to get a different cable or adapter to plug into an American outlet.

i am seriously thinking of getting the uk equivalent of the X305-706, called the X300-13W however the english version costs £2250 which is about $3300. i just can not understand the massive difference in price.

    it is listed here ttp://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/product/Qosmio-X300-13W/1058567/toshibaShop/false/

ok well i havent been on here in over a month, but was wondering if there are any problems with these laptops now??

i updated all updates (bios etc) and STILL HAVE THE BOOTUP PROBLEM. it takes 2 minutes and says "please wait" the whole time. i can then get to my login screen and type in my password.

    has anyone fixed this problem???

my mediabar at the top still has a problem, where i click a button and most of the time it would double click the button i touched, and the media center button. so say i click the mute button. the beep sound comes on twice, the mute button and the media center button lights up and the sound mutes. then about 12 seconds later, media center boots up. it gets so annoying i dont even use the touch buttons anymore.

and i saw a few comments about the speakers. ---- if your playing music in a cheap media player like limewire player or something and turn it up to max volume, there is a high pitched noise. use windows media player, itunes etc.

my disc tray still makes noise when pushed, or leaned on.

but the main problem is the dam bootup time! i need to fix this. im probably going to phone toshiba and see what can be done.

It is the driver for the fingerprint reader that is causing this slow boot-up, I got an update from microsoft updates with a new "Authentic" Driver and this solved mine.
Try uninstalling the fingerprint driver and restarting the laptop and see if it makes it faster, If so try an windows update when you restart and see if it picks it up, It did with me.

i just phoned toshiba customer support and what a waste of 1/2 hr of my life im not gonna get back. its like talking to a wall. i kept asking for someone who specializes in this type of computer model, and no one did. they only gave me troubleshooting tips...THEY DIDNT EVEN KNOW WHAT THE TOUCH SENSITIVE BUTTONS ABOVE THE KEYBOARD ARE. they kept thinking i was talking about the f-keys, or the volume on the side.

what a waste of my life that was.

well ive decided to redo everything. i dont have an external harddrive yet, nor do i have 100$ (i spent 4,000$ in 2 months, i dont have much more since im 16 and quit my job as i go to school) so im burning everything to dvd's. itll probably take 10 dvds to get everything on there, then make a backup dvd and reinstall it.

Hello guys i bought few days ago Toshiba Qosmio X300-13O with 9800M GTX card, got two questions.
Does SetFSB support this notebook, so i can at least somewhat increase FSB
Can i overclock with Ntune a graphic card a little? or at all?
or what else i could do to increase CPU and GPU Mhz? Thank you.
I dont wanna overclock much, just little, if there is a way to do it of course.

Hi, I have a problem with my Qosmio X305, I dont know if this is normal, but everytime I play a game (COD 4, GOW, Crysis) on high performance, my laptop crashes, and takes me to a black screen where I need to do a hard reboot. In order to play games and avoid crashes I need to slow down my CPU performance from 100% to 75%.

    Has someone experienced this?

I havent overclocked my lap, I live in Mexico, and I need to make sure if is a driver failure, hardware or something before calling toshiba and claim my warranty.

    Thanks.

Oh man... How can I do that if the Qosmio didnt came with the vista install DVD? not even with the preinstalled system image...

    Am I missing something?

It only plays about 15 min of game and the whole OS crashes, and the temperature goes up 50C when that happens...

Any idea would be really appreciated, thanks.

well im actually doing it on my laptop as i speak, so im on my old computer.

you first have to backup all your files to an external HD or burn them to dvds. i saved all games, music etc to about 10 dvds.

you then need 2 dvds (4.7GB each) and burn the recovery image to them. to do this, toshiba has a program, but dont know exactly what it is called as im not on my laptop.

search for recovery disk creator or something like that under the start search. it IS on the computer somewhere. if its not under that name, look under utilities, contro panel etc. it should say you need 2 dvds. there is another program on the computer which is similar to this one,but isint the backup maker, it just backs up your files. id prefer not to do this, and just save all files myself.

    hope this helps.

I found it, recovery disk creator... it actually asks me for 4 discs. I'll give it a try this weekend. Hope it fixes my problem...

    Thanks.
