I have been thinking about that myself for some time, but ran into a few problems with the idea. First is finding one not made entirely of metal because it will touch the mainboard and cause a short.
second is: there is not another header to connect and power the fan on the board, so this will mean an external supply will be needed which of course means unsightly wires hanging out the back.
So my extractor fan placed in line with the "empty space" is the better idea for mine which doesnt involve pulling the laptop apart, works great too. :)

Providing you have installed the Value added package from toshiba's site then you should be able to manually turn on/off the lights by typing or copy and pasting this into the start/run box -

    C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TRCMan\Dimmer32.exe

Im certain that the remote requires the infrared driver to make it work

Mine should be arriving tomorrow, but unfortunately I have to work in the other office, 75 miles away, and it may be an overnight trip! I'm eager to get mine and fire it up! My athlon xp2200 768mb RAM desktop just doesn't cut it anymore!

I just picked up my x300 from BB Canada. Here is my first 2 hrs review:

    Start with bad things first:

    1. Prepare 1.8 hrs to start using your computer. Awfully long time to restore the image for the first time use. I have use tons of laptops, this one takes the longest.

    2. Glossy glossy glossy everywhere. Anywhere you touch, there will be fingerprint.

    3. Bad number pad feel when you use it. Worst of all laptop I tested. It's like there is something missing under the pad that when you press any number on it, it falls and pop back up when you release the number.

    4. Bad placement of del, tiny small ENTER, smaller than normal keys widthwise.

    5. Bad touch pad surface.

    6. Cheap LCD, but it's expected.

    7. Bad hinge, the hinge is at the center of the LCD instead of at the sides, so you can twist the LCD easy.

    8. Volume control is 1980's dial wheel.

    9. Slow harddrive

    10. Fan turns on high when the notebook is idle for 10 seconds to lower cpu temp from 60 to 53, then turn off, and turn on again in every 3 minutes, VERY ignoring during sleep. Had to standby the system to sleep.

    11. Thicker than my M1710

Good things I notice so far:

    1. Not as heavy as my XPS, but have a hard plastic feel that won't twist (other than the LCD and the hinge).

    2. Good speaker.

    3. 9700m GTX.

    4. Quiet.

    5. Cheap "1699 - 100" in Canada, I know it's not cheap compare to USA.

    6. Doesn't get too hot.

I will update as I have more time with it.

Yeah, there are definitely a few problems with the Toshiba, however ultimately, the pros outweigh the cons greatly. follow my tips and it should be running as good as possible. especially with adjust the bass.

Hey everyone i didnt know if this thread was still active but what do you think is the better option for me
the toshiba with 9800m gts sli
    or the gateway p-7811fx
i'm not to patient and i cant really wait .
the gateway is 1400 the to is 2000
i can get the gateway in bestbuy and pick it up
or i can order it from toshiba and wait for 2 years
i want the best that will last me but i don't want to watse money if i don't have to.
and what do you think about the reslotion of 1680*1080 or 1920*1200 i would really like to know this so i can choose the best computer for me thanks

i say hands down the x305-q706. i get 8426 on 3dmark 06, the q706 will probably get 10,500 at least. the gateway might manage 9,500 absolute max.

the q705, but its just like mine except with a 320gb hard drive. and supposedly it states on the website that i can potentially have more allocated memory. plus mine is now only $1000 and the q705 is $1500. 120gb of space is not worth $500.

Ok, opened the box last night and have a few reflections as well:

Took nearly 2 hours to burn the recovery discs. No big deal, I expected it.

Feels solid overall (for a desktop replacement, ie: I won't be moving this thing around often). Lid hinge is tight and solid and doesn't wiggle when opened.

Won't be committing any crimes with this thing, as my fingerprints are EVERYWHERE!

Sound is great, even with the 80's style volume wheel.

Out of the box, there were about 70-71 processes running. My previous laptop (which doesn't have Bluetooth, Mic, Webcam, etc) is solid at about 42. Then again, I haven't optimized it yet and only have removed some of the bloatware it shipped with.

Screen looks good, and I don't think I'll miss higher resolution too much. Besides, with HDMI output, I'll be gaming on a 42" or bigger 1080p screen as soon as I can afford one!

That's about it right now. Haven't done anything else but install World of Warcraft. Next is to remove Norton 360 and see if the McAfee software work provides will work in 64-bit (I know our VPN software won't, but I'm sure I can make due with a 3rd party software).

All in all, very happy with the laptop so far. Runs quiet and cool (so far, but I don't suspect WoW to heat this thing up much either). This will stay on the desk, my current laptop (once fixed) will be my travel laptop (until I can afford a 9" EEEPC or some other ultraportable for work!).

Special thanks to Dude55. Without your link to the q701 on Best Buy, I would've kept looking at the q705 or q706! And thanks for the guide in the first post.

Ah, I am glad that you took advantage of the deal. It's good that your enjoying it. For $1000, it cannot be beat at all. Even at $1500, its a good price, but not compared to the q701, basically the same thing at $1000 now.

But, tell me how it is when everything is set up for you.

also, if you don't mind, try posting a 3dmark 06 score. i want to see someone with a q701 or q705 that has a similar score to mine.

I got 7.8K without overclocking on my q701. Man, I am very tempted to get the q706 but that ugly RED. I just wonder sli 9800gts should perform very similar to sli8800gtx. In that case, xps m1730 pulling a 13K 3dm06 should be a match to what q706 can do. Ofcourse the CPU upgrade is mandatory but after putting a x9100, you should be able to get may be 14K (ie sli 9800gt can pull that kind of a score.)

I haven't noticed the fans being a problem, but that's because 90% of my uptime with the system has been playing WoW or listening to music. I slept without a problem last night (of course, I can and have slept through thunderstorms and a punk band's set at a metal concert!).

I am very happy with the q701! I can't wait to get CoD5: World at War, or some other new game to really see what it can do!

Here's some pics of mine ( kinda blurry on some of the pics but no idea why )
I'm no hardcore gamer, so I don't have a stand-alone monitor or 5.1 surround sound system ( the speakers on the x305 are already awesome!!!! )
I bought a Logitech V450 Nano mouse to match the laptop =)
    What do you guys think?

I have the Core 2 Duo sticker. Either way, the P7350 processor has centrino technology, and in some areas, maybe the UK, its prevalently recognized opposed to here in the US where its just core 2 duo.

Will there be X3** Toshiba with 9800M GTX in sli?

And is there anyone with 9800GTS? How much mark you have? And how much battery works in very low power mode (email, word...) any pluses from 9400?

I have 8426 3DMark 06. The best Toshiba out now is the $4200 US q708. The best deal for price to performance is the q706, with 2 9700m gts cards in sli. Who knows, it could be 9800m gts cards, but the only way to find out is if someone has it.

and i have never tried the face recognition tool. however, i heard that toshiba "recognizes" the issue but cannot recall where that was from.

Hey, everyone hear about the 3 gpus being unveiled in the q706 and q708. better wait a bit for them to settle so you can have 3. the 9400m igp is only for less power consumption and heat, plus if your Sli cards fail, hey at least you have something.

ok well heres a few things that i want to do, from now until christmas.

buy an external hard drive and put all my files on it.
buy an internal hard drive, preferibly 100 - 200 gb 7200rpm hd.
reinstall vista onto the 100gb hd and use that only for windows. i wont load anything else on it. i will save all files to the external and 320gb hard drive.
eventually fix my cd drive. it makes alot of creaks when pushing on it.
hopefully the fresh install will fix the bootup problem and other things.
    possibly buy a cpu upgrade.

Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum and the proud new owner of the Q706, and I would like to set the record straight once and for all about its specs. For starters it has a screen resolution up to 1680x1050 which is fine with me, it also comes packed with 3 GPU’s. It has a 9400m for optional use to conserve battery power when it’s not using external power, and 2 9800m GTX with Nvidia SLI technology up to 1gb of dedicated memory. The performance of this machine is great, I can run Fallout 3 on high settings and resolution without any noticeable clipping. The only changes I would make for this laptop would be a 2.53GHz processor and maybe a different paint job (I bought a black and red biohazard skinit to cover the ugly flames on the back lol). If anyone has any questions for me please fell free to ask anything you like.

Ok, I thought I should clarify something, on the spec stickers that come on the laptop it says Nvidia 9800m GTX with SLI technology. However when you check the system information in the Nvidia control panel it says 9800m GTS? I just wanted to post that because I'm not trying to mislead anyone on this forum, sorry.

Can someone please tell me where I can find any BIOS or driver updates for this laptop? I've already searched the Toshiba website but the support there downright sucks, and seems pretty useless.

Whatever the number of posts you need to make, airmanpanther, you seem to be doing your best to get there!

One question for everyone in general: how many of you have experienced problems with the speakers?

The Best Buy display model had a slight buzzing in one of the 4 speakers, most noticeable listening to music with piano and other clean sounds (as opposed to distorted rock or metal). Now my own has the same buzzing on one of the 4. I rarely have had this thing turned up (like literally twice, just to test it out, and only for a measure or two of music) as I've been careful to avoid this, but sure enough it's buzzing.

It must have been a defect with that display because I've never had a problem with my speakers. However whenever I use headphones the bass seems way to loud and it makes your headphones seem as if one of them are busted. I've tried adjusting the sound settings but nothing seems to work for me.

Are you absolutely sure it has 9800M GTX? Because the official specs list it as having 9800M GTS cards.

Check my above post, I believe it may be 9800M GTS. On the sticker that gives you some of the specs it says 9800M GTX SLI, however when you check the system information within the laptop it says 9800M GTS. If I were able post pics I could show you exactly what I mean, either way the performance is still great.
