I believe Toshiba won't offer you a GPU, unlike Dell. And if you are able to obtain a GPU, it would be expensive.
Otherwise, I don't know of any sound cards that are comparable in quality to the Creative X-Fi Extreme Notebook Edition. But I was thinking about getting it, does it make the sound quality better? What are the pros and cons?
-
I just unboxed my X305-q706 and the device manager says qx9300 processor.
[/IMG]
EDIT System information shows P8400 and Vista experience index is 5.2 for processor. 5.2 and 5.3 for graphics--not good. -
I want to drop a P9500 in my Q705 but see the T9600 for bout the smae used price. Will the T9600 be worth the 2.8GHz over the p9500's 2.53 even if it gets warmer and uses more battery? How do they compare if used now before I get my nV 9800M-GTS?
-
The drivers for the Q706 are really pure dog poop. You should get 5.9 for both graphics settings, and perhaps up to a 5.3 for CPU. I have 5.9 for both and im only running a 9700m gts and for my cpu i get a 5.0. -
I personally wouldnt be a used CPU.
And a t9600 is definitely going to be better. The only cons are that its not the P refresh so the few changes made to the P series other than the lower TDP of 25 instead of 35 wont apply to it. if the t9600 was 2.53ghz like the p9500, the p9500 would be around 10% better, as a good guess. But its nearly 270mhz more, so i say its worth it. but for me, i wouldnt get a used cpu and i would get a new p9500 and sell your p7350. -

So sgilmore......did you finally get your 706 from Toshiba???
-
[/IMG]
I was able to overclock the processor using the Nvidia system tools. -
No, I cancelled my order with Toshibadirect because they said it would be the middle of January. I ordered it December 12th, a month wait for a prebuilt computer? I ordered from Newegg on Friday and got it today.
-
Wow, and I just looked last night and saw it was out of stock at NewEgg...sniff. So I'll just wait now I guess. Wonder if prices will go down anytime soon. J&R in NYC will be getting it in soon too, according to their website.
Glad you finally got yours, sgilmore! -
how in the world did you overclock that processor? -
[/IMG]
I tried overclocking the gpu's a little with the Nvidia system tools and the Vista index went to 4.6. I clicked restore defaults and rebooted and the graphics scores went to 5.9's -
With Nvidia system tools I clicked CPU and changed the frequencies.
-
I dont know what ur talking about exactly? mind showing a photo that depicts the cpu and the clock speed being able to change? i cant change the clock speeds on mine. hmm it may be because u have an nvidia motherboard!

-
oh man i envy you so much. 2 9800's, overclockability for the cpu just like that. oh man. !@#$%^& toshiba with the x305 q701 having to have an intel chipset!
-
i'd be kinda intrested in how far you can push it and still have it be stable.... the ability to oc the proc just re percd my intrest in this laptop a little more then the MSI
-
I believe you can overclock the MSI as well through their program.

More review:
1 week in and I get plenty of turned heads and admiring of new Qsmio X305-Q705. I really like the speaker system on this series compared to the many notebooks I played w/ in the past 3 yrs+.
Only cons so far are the deep size and thikness, but not to unusual for a gaming rig. Also, the keyboard is to glossy and fingerprints show up way too easy on the bright shiny surfaces. (looks nice when polished though). The auto scroll is really lacking compared to previous models It is hit or miss if it actually becomes active when needed. The media keys are too sensitive and easily activated if barely touched turning things by acident if brushing past them.
By all means, it's a great machine , either model of the X305 series, for the money spent and sounds great too. -
-
"Only cons so far are the deep size and thikness"--Lappie
I would rather have a thick laptop that stays cool than one of those thin lapcookers. -
Ja, I have to admit, I do prefer the cooler overall system. I do believe the thickness, much like most Sagers, has to do with the better colling. the RAM eve stays much cooler then in some of my other notebooks. I just wish it wasn't so deep from front to back.
-
I am not really bothered by the thickness too much. Sure, it could definitely be a little bit thinner and that wouldn't hurt, but as long as you are happy with the overall performance and looks, the thickness is almost obsolete.
The sad thing with the cooling is that Toshiba has only included 1 fan on the q705 and q705 which is a huge, huge, HUGE mistake. Regardless of only having 1 graphics card, they have fans themselves, and a heatsink they are connected to. The extra fan would still be plenty useful in a q701 or q705.
This, is my biggest flaw with Toshiba.
But, on the other side, Newegg just shipped my black NZXT Cryo LX notebook cooler along with AS5 and the Arctic Silver thermal remover and surface purifier. I should get everything by Thursday or Friday.
I may or may not post a disassembly guide. But, if I don't I will try to explain it as much as possible, and include the pros and cons to taking this thing apart yourself. I will also post temperature differences with the Cryo. -
http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Toshiba,Qosmio,Laptop,Fans.aspx
What fan would i need to get?
And does anybody know if I could add the fan to my q701?
I would like to only have to take this thing apart once, so i want to put the fan in the same time i apply AS5. -
[/IMG] I like my thick laptop==this things cool as a cucumber and right out of the box it's processor bm's are out the pocket. need new graphics drivers though cause 3d scores only 1735 fps when should be 3500.
-
Not sure you want to use Arctic silver 5-- Dow chemical just came out with a grease that withstands drying out with overclocking the QX9300.
http://www.azom.com/news.asp?newsID=13380 -
Just saw the Q711 posted on J&R's website. Man, they're really coming out with a whole new set of X305's, aren't they? I heard someone talking about a 707. The 711 doesn't look much different than the 705. I'm still watching the 706's for lowering prices, LOL.
T. -
arctic silver 5 is good enough,
my temps have dropped over 20 degree's on CPU/GPU with
NZXT CRYO LX Laptop Cooler and a PCMCIA card cooler for added air circulation -
yeah, i am using my expresscard port with a ex720 card for mobile broadband. it's running cool and i am maxing out the t-1 tower 1/4 mile away at 1500k. i am roaming and previously had problems with this tower trying to intermittently disconnect and default to a 1xrtt tower 26 miles away. cant report just yet on coast to coast capabilities cause im not going back over the road for another couple weeks. btw, i bought the nzxt too only because i use my laptop for a gps while im driving and don't want to set it directly on the passenger seat.

Nice, I see you clocked to 2641Mhz. I think that's a little too high though. I probably would only go up to around 2500Mhz. That should be safe. And make sure that if you undervolt, you don't go too low because running at the higher frequency requires more power.
-
yeah, i just tried bumpin it up to 3110 and it froze the cursor--had to hold the power button to restart. seems to be very stable at current clock but fan runs more.
-
i think you have to go just a little at a time and let the computer run for awhile with a few restarts in between before trying higher speeds.
-
cpu overclocking is not recommended as thermal is set in bios, but good luck with it, undervolting will help but cooling and [steady] temps are a must , or else youll lock up , id suggest just a slight overclock if your not going to replace the cpu fan with a faster/better one.
-
Anybody have any luck w/ the touch pad and it's "auto scroll" feature? I had it barely working for about 2 days and after an update it now shows up as a Symantics and before was ALPS driver and in any event, the panel to adjust or set the tapping and auto scroll is gone.
-
mine says "synaptics pointing device" and no, the auto scroll feature does not work. I hadn't noticed until you mentioned because i use a logitech mx bluetooth mouse and keyboard. The bluetooth recognized them both so i don't have to use the usb device. the only time there is any lag is when im signing in after reboot but that happens with the integrated keyboard too.
I think there is something going on with the computer having both versions 64 and 32 of Vista. This is my first pc with x64. There are some bugs. Maybe a fresh install of x64 would solve some problems? -
i just rolled back the driver on mine, cause i went to device settings ,then settings again?and i couldnt figure it out so,screw it
-
I wonder why the device manager shows QX9300 processor? There are a few other quirks too like the hybrid sli thing and 32 bit and 64 programs/drivers.
-
K, just looked at the roll back and the ALPS driver and version are the same as what's on Toshibas site. They have a download for each a Symantics and ALPS for Vista x64. I was thrown off cause somebody in the tread told me it used a Symantis touch pad. So I guess it's an ALPS and then you get the advance settings now. or again.
-
mine says P8400 on device manager and the box that mine came in says P7350 dual core, so i get faster cpu as a bonus (I only payed 700 bucks for mine at retail store cause my friend gave me a discount as it was a floor display model for 2 days) , but was normally $1699.99
which id never pay that much for a laptop unless it had SLI dual 9800GTS's. -
I downloaded 3dmark06 and ran it with stock drivers and no overclock on the gpu's and with the cpu overclock and got 11234
[/IMG]
edit: the cpu is clearly oc'd at 2.634 on this benchmark -
thats a good score without even overclocking the gpu.
-
11234 is pretty good. Try overclocking the graphics cards...you might get an extra 500-1000. Also, wait till better drivers are available for the q706. im sure that this thing can hit up to 13000.
-
bumped the cpu up another smidgen and got a little more out of it.

-
new nvidia drivers are coming in january for mobility cards, but so far beta's work fine for me in all my games
-
Ah so I see you have 8583, could I see the link to the score or a picture to compare what you are getting better than me?
-
-
Perhaps when you overclock the cards, the 9400M G comes into play. Make sure that you don't overclock the 9400 and you overclock both 9800's. See if that helps.
-
I also notice that there are 2 browsers x86 and x64 also there are alot of x86 drivers. This is my first pc with x64, shouldn't everything be x64? I wonder if I need a clean install of just x64 drivers?
