you should have searched the thread and figured out everything before you start such a process. have you done the mod to ensure that usb 3.0 gets mounted. are you sure that you made the usb stick mountable? (dont ask how to do it... that is what google is for, there are tons of guides for this) also try to get a different install image, the one your burned may not be complete or may be corrupt. when you download it or use it you should be able to run a md5 sum on it to check its integrity. the sums can be found on microsofts website and then made for your image with free software found with... you guessed it google.
the problem is not that you asked a question, as you are right, he forum is a place for questions. but the problem does come from you asking the same questions answered every 50 pages on this thread alone... let alone on the internet.
EDIT i reread a few of your posts... a dvd burning software will not tell you if the data is bad if you give it a bad image to burn
the bios does not need to be updated to run a ssd. the interface for a HHD and a SSD are the same and are directly compatible. you can check to see if it works without an installed os by booting an ubuntu live cd and doing some checks.... namely that it mounts.
but do note that you havent even begun to touch the part of the install process that would reveal a hrd drive problem as the part you are on is where the disk loads files into ram... very different. as i said before. it is most likely a problem with your install cd.
@erikalikesfire
where did the 4 holes in your heat sink come from.... looks slick. and did the pad come off the mobo or did you have to work on the heatsink while it was attached?
-
Hows the keyboard flex with the s15? Also, does it stay relatively cool while browsing and watching videos? Thanks
-
Are you using the USB 2 or 3 port? Use the USB 2 port, Win7 does not have native USB 3 support. Also, if there is an issue expanding the files you may have a RAM issue. Did you upgrade the RAM? If so remove the module and try again. If you still have issues run MemTest86+ to check your RAM.
Asking the same question to a message board will not make an answer appear more quickly.
Are you kidding me? This has been asked and answered several times already. Search the thread.
Rant:
On another note, as a longtime computer enthusiast i am surprised to see how many people have never performed basic upgrades such as RAM or HDD, or have never re-installed Windows. I am willing to bet that the majority of posts in this thread are about SSD installation, memory upgrades, Win7 installation issues or driver installation problems.
Compared to the DIY users in the Sager/Clevo part of this forum I find this difference quite striking. -
So I tried removing my extra installed 4GB RAM, and I got up to 17% on "Expanding Files" and then I got the same error message.
Now, I get the message: "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."......
I am back to UEFI mode from Legacy Mode....maybe since I installed Win7 partially, I can't go back to UEFI? -
I don't know a ton about SSD's, but seemed like a good deal so I thought I would share:
Newegg.com - OCZ Agility 4 AGT4-25SAT3-512G 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) -
Test your machine with MemTest86+, you may have a bad 4GB soldered on your mainboard or a flaky memory controller on your CPU.
Is the SSD new? If not, use the SSD manufacturers utility to perform a clean/low level erasure of the disk.
You can only install in UEFI mode with the Sony recovery media or a Win7 FAT32 USB thumbdrive modded as per above. You cannot use the Win7 DVD in UEFI mode, you need to use BIOS mode. -

thanks for the info, and the tear-down pictures. but could you please resize the pictures to a more reasonable size? they have made reading your post impossibly hard; not everybody has a 2560x1600 monitor! -
Not true. I used a Windows 7 Pro DVD in UEFI mode to do a clean install when I swapped my HDD for an SSD.
-
Curious. Is your disc newer with SP1? My release disc won't load the installer in UEFI mode.
-
Ok, another option I am going to try.
Can I use an System Image from my external hard drive and install everything onto my SSD that way? -
Just wondering if anyone has contacted sony repair about the 13" premium screen being dimmer on the right side of the dispay as well as the shimmer on the top right corner (seems to only be apparent when my displaying a white background liek this website)? if so did sony do anything about it?
i just fired an email to the online sony support and they told me to reinstall everything. but ive owned this laptop for a month now and the right side appears to be getting worse or im just getting more paranoid about it since owning it thus far. -
tmckenn2:
The four holes were under the black tape on the borders, which you can see in the pre-lapped picture
I'm afraid I don't know what pad you're talking about...
darxide_sorcerer:
Sorry, I didn't realize the embedded picture was full-size
-
Change your refresh rate of 40hz to 60hz to fix it.
-
Deaks2: Yea, similar to what zero002021 said, I was able to install Windows 7 DVD in UEFI mode. I downloaded the ISO from the microsoft website literally a few hours before I reinstalled everything...so not sure if that made a difference vs. an older copy lying around.
Installing the same image via USB required Legacy mode however.
I'm pretty sure whatever bios mode you install Windows doesn't matter at all, but I didn't want to take a chance I'd miss something picking UEFI over Legacy, so I stuck with the super slow DVD install instead

Hey all, I finally decided on buying an S13 but have a question or two about customizing it. What (and how much of a) difference will upgrading to a faster processor make? Also, if I'm playing games like diablo 3, modern warfare 3, and skyrim (medium settings on all) will I need the extra gig of memory on the gpu?
-
my monitor has always been at 60 HZ.
i just tried 40Hz and its even worse.
the other option is 59 Hz but it makes no difference (nor 60Hz) on the upper right corner, it still glimmers when shifting my head position or eyes.
the monitor refresh wouldnt explain the right side of the monitor being dimmer than the left. -
Here's the answer: link

Hi everyone! just got my S15 (i7), although after a clean win 7 install on my 750gb HDD, I can't see Realtek HD audio manager in control panel. I've installed both, the realtek driver as well as the audio patch listed at the sony support website. Help guys!

anyone know how to get the optical drive from making that loud buzz everytime the laptop omes out of sleep?
im guessing its to check if theres a disc in the drive (?)
i tried disabling the drive in device manager but it didnt stop. i also made sure to restart after disabling -
Mine does not make any noise upon resume from sleep.
-
I tried to do the same thing (disable in device manager). Disable it via the BIOS and that shuts it up

i have the s15 (i5,1gb 640m le,8 gb ram) for about 2 weeks, i am mostly impressed with it
the red color issue is not that serious unless you are a designer and most people won't even notice it.
the features of it are well known and well discussed here (light, powerful, gorgeous screen, design etc....) , mine came with a fingerpring reader too (somewhere i read that it usually comes with s13 models) and i found it very useful, especially with lastpass.
i have one issue though, sometimes (happened 3 times so far), the trackpad corresponds only to hard key buttons and mouse touch, the gestures and one finger button don't work, problem solved with restart but it happened a few times, anyone experienced this too? -
 Works perfectly fine for me...Try reinstalling the synaptics touchpad driver if the problem reoccurs.
BTW, the speakers are too damn quiet on my S15 (i7) even with dolby enabled. Any fix for this? (If any driver updates are there, please link them to me) -
Facing the same problem here after a win 7 fresh install. Any fixes?
-
Then yours got a defect. Call Sony and have it repaired or replace.
-
My S15 with clean install does the same thing. I have found hitting the ESC key gets my mouse gestures back.
-
Yes, my disc is a newer one containing SP1.
-
Thanks for letting us know.

Hi,
im waiting for my new svs15 in UK with i7 3612qm, 8gb ram, 2gb geforce g640m le. im mostly a console user but i think i might use this one for a little gaming, can somebody tell some experience with same specs. i read it i can play most of todays games on medium settings, but i more wonder how it goes on high or ultimate? do i need to overclock the gpu or it will work as it comes out from factory. as im a newbie in pc gaming, i wouldnt touch anything in it if i must not need to. obviously as i own a ps3 im looking for better graphics on pc thats why im asking about graphics. -
I was wondering a couple of things about the extended battery sheet. I know when you receive it from sony you charge it by not having it connected to the laptop at all, but is that always the way you charge it? Say the laptop battery is 100% full and you are plugged in, will the power switch and start charging the sheet battery?
-
that info is advertised all over sony's website and also there are a few reviews on youtube that describe the process. when connected to the computer it will charge 1 battery at a time starting with the built in then when that hits 80% i believe it will switch to the sheet battery. when discharging it will discharge the sheet battery first. at least in theory this is how it was designed, though i have seen a few reviews that describe balky behavior...

The rebate is not suppose to be applied at checkout, the rebate is done after u get the laptop and you download a form and u then fill that up and you cut something from the box and you mail that in and you get your rebate visa prepaid card a month or so later.
Basically by you asking a Sony rep is giving up your advantage by talking too much instead of just applying one single coupon that u need in the choice of free vita or free ps3 or 5% or 10% discount then when you get the laptop you do the form and u send that in along with the copy or cutout of the barcode for the rebate. But now you gave them a reason to scrutinize you. Better make sure you are a legit student or this is a fraud since you gave up your advantage. -
Hey guys, I've been stalking this thread for quite some time, and finally ordered my Sony Vaio S 13P in store today (managed to get a small carry case free for a £1400 order, yay)
specs of my configured vaio s
Gun Metallic
Intel®Core(TM)i7-3520M, 2.9GHz
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium
640 GB Serial ATA (7200 rpm)
8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3-SDRAM
Blu-ray Disc(TM) writer
33.7 cm LCD, 1600x900+webcam
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 640M LE (2GB)
Security features
Long-Life Battery
Wireless WAN
Could have saved some money with the hard drive and extra RAM, but hopefully when I get it that won't matter.
How long do these things take to ship to the UK? -
i also had to argue with sony about deals... i wanted the sheet battery and 10% off.. it says on their cite when you oder you get a battery and it was added automatically, then when you apply the coupon for 10% it removes the battery WITHOUT telling you... . my first order was botched because of it. i have a online rep telling me that you can get both and the phone reps saying you cant... then THEN the sony phone rep tried to sell me some bull on how the left overs of the 10% is accounted for in the 15 dollars of program savings which you get regardless... e was just making it up. then he tried to tell me about sony and how much money they would loose. the fact of the matter is. its not clear on their website and in terms of sails reps... what ever happened to the customer is always right... i dont give a hoot about sony. thats how consumerism works.... but i bought it anyways bc im a sucker... oh well

Got my s13p this morning. Order placed on Aug 2nd, shipped out Aug 8-9th, arrived Aug 14th.
I see what people mean about the graininess of the screen, reminds me of the ThinkPad T410s that I used to set up at work this past summer, only a bit more pronounced I think. If I was a big graphic/video editing person I could see it being an issue, luckily I'm a coder so it doesn't bother me at all, especially since it isn't noticeable in games. I don't see the "flickering" in the upper right at all, stared at it for a while and didn't notice anything. Keyboard is acceptable (not really a huge fan of chicklet style) and the trackpad is very nice.
I used IObit Uninstaller to get rid of a bunch of the crap that comes preloaded and then did the Intel registry fix and it was noticeably snappier. Played some Skyrim, Civ 5, and Day Z, all ran great at med to med-high settings.
Overall quite happy with the purchase, it's very portable, reasonably powerful and gets the job done gaming-wise. Paid $1074 after taxes (base premium setup but with 2GB video card with $100 off using "VOUCHERCODES" promotion code for Sony Canada store). Will think about sticking a 256gb SSD in there if I can find a good deal on one in the next few months, maybe during the boxing day sales. -
We shall see in three days, but based on a model search of your computer, it is very similar. I'll wait until it arrives and contact Sony.
-
I ordered a custom laptop about 2-3 weeks ago and today I got emailed a shipping confirmation/invoice and says I can track it on the DPD website but all the email says is "Your order has been sent via DPD with parcel label number ."
Anyone who has bought a custom vaio from England know how long it takes from the point you get that since they didn't give me a tracking number -
What do you mean with "registry fix"?
-
I searched the thread but i couldn't find what i was looking for: I read about people with 15 inch Vaio's who replaced the ODD with an HDD. Since i own a S13P i wonder if somebody already performed this trick on a 13 inch model?
For my personal goals it is more important to have sufficient storage capacity than the ability to use cd's or dvd's. Would be nice to have a 128 GB SSD bootdrive and a second HDD storagedrive. -
The shimmer is normal

Are custom sony vaio's exempt from returns?
Also, with the 640LE 2GB with the i5 processor, what kind of settings would I be able to play guild wars 2 at? -
I think its about 2 days tops...mine took about 4 days because DPD received my laptop on the weekend
-
For the people trying to get the battery and the 10% off, where are you guys getting the 10% off code? And would it work with Sony Canada?
Thanks. -
Those people are buying from the US store. For guys like us in Canada, few promotions exist. Try these codes for if you are buying from sony.ca and want to save cash.
VOUCHERCODES
GREATCANADIAN
If your purchase is over $1000 before taxes, you'll get $100 off the subtotal. If it's below it $1000, you'll get $40 off.
Right now, you can get Sony's Z series 16GB Walkman ($300 value) for free if you order a customized system. Check out their website for a couple other deals.
You cannot combine any of those codes with the free stuff, they automatically fall off the cart after review, at least on the Canadian website.
P.S. Sorry for the English errors, I'm not a native speaker.
Cheers -
Thanks for all the help with my Win7 installation dilemma! All of the problems that caused me was due to an defective OCZ Vertex 4 SSD.
Now I am considering the Samsung 830. So it's 7mm SSD does indeed fit with no problems? Does it feel loose or does it wiggle or anything? -
Amazing thread, I think ive spent about 4 hours reading through it. I am considering getting the S15, i7 QM, blu-ray writer, Nvideo 640le 2GB and 4GB RAM (to be upgraded myself) and the most basic HDD (to be upgraded myself).
I have searched through the thread (as some have been insisting to do) but have a few questions.
1. I am confused with all the SATA II and SATA III talk. If I get the following SSD, will it work and what kind of speeds will I be getting? CT256M4SSD2 - 256GB, 2.5-inch Solid State Drive , from Crucial.com
2. I was watching the wizz video and another on youtube and the SSD on the wizz video was connected to the ribbon cable at a diff place to the HDD on another video (same laptop obviously). Do I need to buy a ribbon cable to connect the SSD or will it connect in the same was as the HDD and at the same place?
3. Will the following RAM work? CT102464BF1339 - 8GB, 204-pin SODIMM , DDR3 PC3-10600 from Crucial.com
Thanks everyone (this is my first post so go easy haha) -
I bought a 13P from the outlet on Sony's website yesterday and should get it tomorrow. The rebate says Offer not valid on refurbished, open-box, returned products, or demonstration products so I'm assuming I should be all set with that, right? I also would like to know this. I'm looking to upgrade to a SSD for my 13P (either samsung or crucial like in original post) but it doesn't mention size. Thanks. -
Has anyone tried using Windows 8 on their S13/S15 ?
-
NOTE: i havent dont any of these mods... infact my vaio is in shenghi but i have read around.
1) the bios (or so we think) limits drives that are not from sony to sata2 speeds. there is a work around. by disabling the ODD and rebooting from sleep somehow sata 3 speeds work, however some owners of the crucial m4 line say that this doesnt work for them. SO no the one in the link wont get sata 3 speeds. however if you look at the non sequential read writes, which is the majority of what a computer does, the difference in speed is not that large... but never the less it is very annoying.
2) there are no extra ribbon cables. there is however he ODD caddy for another disk drive. note that the boot drive must be in the original hd position. there is however a difference in layout between the vaio s 15 and 13... wizz has a 15 inch model. however both have been done an it is said that the procedure isnt very different
3)i didnt look at the link but any laptop ram will work. dont waste your money on 1600mhz ram as it will get clocked down anyways bc of the onboard ram... you will loose dual channel if you put a size different tan the onboard 4gb stick...
