just got my S13P 2 days ago and I am loving it so far! the screen isn't the greatest I must admit, but I am outputting it to my 1080P IPS panel while using a wireless k/b. Build quality is top notch and is quite the looker. The only game I have tried with it so far is Diablo 3, and just using the 850mhz bios mod, I played Diablo 3 on high everything 1080p, VSYNC on, AA off, everything was quite smooth and playable!.
There are some talks on a update, but it is like that all the time anyway with electronics, so you shouldnt feel bad when a newer model will come out. I will get to use this for a long time, and when it cannot handle modern PC games, I will just fix up my desktop PC and just use this for business.

I think i f*cked up big time,....
I replaced the original HDD with an SSD, no problem whatsoever. Then i replaced the ODD with the original HDD, worked ok for one day. Then i lost the extra HDD in explorer so i opened up the laptop again and noticed the HDD slid out of the connection. After securing the HDD with a little piece of cardboard i closed the laptop again.
I first noticed the trackpad and keyboard didn't respond. I thought maybe i didn't connect the two flatcables correctly so i opened the laptop and refitted both the flatcables. I find refitting the two flatcables to be one of the most tricky parts of opening the laptop,...it is hard to see if you fit the cables the correct way.
I booted up the laptop and now the keyboard and trackpad worked, but the backlight didn't lightup. Opened up the laptop again and refitted the flatcables again. After bootup the keyboard, trackpad and backlight worked, but i had no sound! No sounddevice installed! F*CK!!
Again i refitted the flatcables and checked for other loose connection, found none. After bootup i had sound again, so i closed the laptop with all the screws and tried to boot again,....nothing happened!
I think i f*cked up my flatcable connections,....i'm desperate,...and confused,..what should i do? Bring back the laptop in original state and RMA it? I'm afraid to open it up again and damage even more things,....
Maybe somebody has other suggestions? What are my options? Who experienced this horror also? Can you guys imagine the pain i suffer after f*ucking up and it is my own fault? I could bang my head against the wall! -
Thanks for reply. I dig a bit deeper and found out few more things.
It turns out that VAIO S uses HDMI 1.4 standard, which supports 4K resolution, so resolution cap is purely Sony thing. Why they would do so is beyond my understanding.
SATA thing is sad also. I agree, that performance difference is not huge in real world, but it's here depending on the task you're doing. What hurts the most is that we're denied performance advantage that we already paid for. We didn't ask to disable SATA III, they decided on their own. On a side note, people care about little differences, for example, some filks still buying i7 processors with this machine for 250 USD extra, which give them very little performance advantage. So the same goes with SATA III, the difference is small, but we want it and we should get it for free. Maybe it's human nature to strive for absolute best.
To conclude, I just want to say that usually Sony excels in areas where it's hard to do so for others, but gives poor implementations on the things which don't require huge effort to make them right and is no brainier for other manufacturers. Sony is about to create a perfect gadget and later as if on purpose they throw some sticks to their own wheels. -
OK....first thing is TRY not to panic. Second thing...get a good nights sleep or leave it for at least 6 hours and let your blood pressure come down.
Sounds like you may be a little new to this....so I'm gonna start with basic stuff.
When opening the lappy...always disconnect ALL power AC & battery. This protects the motherboard from electrical damage.
If in doubt take pictures of each disassembly step so you can be sure where stuff goes when you reassemble it. For you it's prob too late for this but it's a good rule. Really easy to hook wire A to post B instead of A when reassembling.
I doubt you've done permanent damage here unless you managed to hook something up backwards and brick the mobo which from your post seems unlikely. Failure to boot at all can be a bad sign but let's define that a bit first.
Does Sony Logo/Insyde BIOS logo appear? If it does...can you enter BIOS setup by pressing/holding F2? Does ANY of the Windows boot up graphics appear? I'm guessing not since you said NOTHING happens. If you press you ear to the palm rest can you hear the HDD or fans start when you press the POWER button? Do the GREEN LEDS at the power button light up at all? If the answer to all of these is NO then check for a bad power brick and/or discharged battery. Another clue...does the battery charging LED light when you plug in the power brick?
If the answer to all these is NO then you're gonna have to open the lappy again. Either to restore it to original condition so you can RMA or so you can do more troubleshooting.
If you're gonna RMA be sure to put the original ODD back in place and pull out the SSD and replace it with the original HDD. You don't want to send your expensive SSD to Sony and you SURE don't want them to know you opened the case to mess with the ODD!
If you want to do some trouble shooting while you're in there check for loose wires...specifically the thick power cable running diagonally from the right rear corner to the center front where it connects to the mobo. Also another fairly thick power wire from the battery connector to the mobo. If these are disconnected you will get no power and no boot...NADA...nothing.
Check the ribbon (flat) cable to the track pad on the case top for security....each one of these ribbon cables has a release to unlock it...you usually release it by pulling up gently with a fingernail and relock it by pressing firmly but gently back into place after properly positioning the ribbon cable. Use a magnifying glass to check for gross damage to the cable(s) both here and under the HDD/SSD bay which sounds like where your problems lie.
Be sure you have properly secure the HDD WITH SCREWS where ever you have it installed. The ODD/HDD caddy that you purchased should have appropriate screws and holes to mount the HDD securely. I'm worried by your description of securing it with a piece of cardboard! This shouldn't be necessary! You can use only two screws instead of 4 but you should use some screws!
Let us know where the above leaves you and we'll try to help more if we can! -
Guys, when you were upgrading RAM, did you consider to add 4GB and make it 8GB in total instead of 12GB, so you can get the benefit of dual channel? I believe the benefit of that in real world would be small, but curious if anyone did a test on that.
-
new ram has async performance very close to dual channel... so the performance wouldnt be too much of a hit... some even say they get dual channel with the two different sizes... but i cannot independently confirm that... sorry.
-
Bummer this happened, man. Did you follow my guide to do the replacing? If you did, I don't think it should have been too hard to reattach the ribbon cables. They are located right under the primary hard drive bay.
Follow orionz advice. I'll monitor this thread a little more closely over the next couple days as well. -
Hey guys! I have had my Sony Vaio S13P for about 3 weeks now and I am really happy with it. Except for one thing! My spacebar-key started to squeak a week ago. As I use this laptop in class and such I need it to stay silent. Whenever I press the key it sounds like I have a mouse in the room or something. Now, is there some way of adressing this issue myself or should I call Sony..? Are the keys removable and easily put back? The squeaking noise is coming from the mechanism below the key, it's not my speakers or anything. Thank you!
-
The super battery saver in vaio control should be set to 80% or 50% ? Which one is better ? Currently i have set to 80%.
It is Vaio S15. -
Thanks a bunch! I've uninstalled a bunch of Sony's stuff already. Left the main Vaio ones detailed in the OP and a few others. Except when I turn on the computer I'm always around 100 processes, which is WAY too high for my liking. I would try and post a list here but I'm not sure how to get all my processes into text format. I would ideally only like to see 50 or so processes. Any way you might be able to help me here? Without doing a clean install.
Also, why does my power button not turn orange when I put the computer to sleep on AC? I have yet to try on battery.
And my function key commands for brightness etc don't work after I wake up from sleep at all. Is this normal?
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!
I have mine at 80%.
EDIT: Here is my current Programs List. Anything else I can uninstall? I haven't removed Vegas or the sound stuff yet, maybe I should.

I just got a new S15. Liking the laptop, I used the Vaio Uninstaller to uninstall most of the junk except Smart Network, Easy Connect, Control Center, CPU Fan and Keyboard shortcuts. Any of these not needed at all for normal operation?
Also, anyway to increase the sound volume? Not even talking about quality here really, just the volume! Thanks! -
Use Dolby.
And mine didn't even come with Keyboard shortcuts lolwut? -
I did a fresh install of a plain Windows 7 (not the OEM version that comes with it) and then installed the drivers in the recommended order and these are the ones I don't have on my Programs and Features list. I omitted stuff I don't have that you might use like ccleaner and skype. Everything seems to work fine, even the mouse gestures.

To be honest though a fresh install is worth it if only to get rid of the 20gb+ secret partitions Sony makes. The full system backup I made with Sony's OEM version didn't even work when Win7 became unbootable after I messed up some stuff, meanwhile my fresh install backup actually worked when I tested it on a spare 2.5" hdd. It also had some positive side effects like being able to successfully install VMware. -
So those are the only programs you kept that came with the computer? Just to confirm I understood your post right.
And I've never done a clean install before, so I'm a bit hesitant to go that route. -
No, those are programs in your list that I didn't install after a fresh Win7, and everything on my s13p works fine.
-
I can confirm this.
I've added another 8GB and it runs dual-channel asynchronous. -
Actually...
If I'm not wrong (according the audio-thread somewhere here), the Dolby as provided by Sony shouldn't actually be used. -
Hello everyone!
I ordered my S13A about one week ago and I am really looking forward to finaly replacing my good but a little outdated dell m1330.
But there is still one big question remaining for me:
replace the HDD with a SSD or replace the WWAN-card with a msata SSD.
I didn't find an answer to the question if someone already installed (or tried to install) a msata SSD in the S13A. Obviously I didn't read all the thread and just used the search so I may have missed something. Maybe someone can help me here.
And if anyone wants to know what I think about these two options, here is my background:
SSDs are awesome. That's why I want a SSD instead of a HDD (at least for the OS)
In addition I need a lot of space. Currently I am more or less living at two places plus I spend my days at university. And I am constantly forgetting my external HDD somewhere I don't need it.
So to get enough space in my notebook I see the two options: use a 512gb SSD or keep the default HDD and add a msata SSD for the OS(s) to get the performance. -
As far as I know, combining the SSD with an mSata is impossible. Furthermore you would at least need 128gb for the operating system + current and future updates.
-
Is it possible to upgrade the CPU of the 13.3" 'premium' model?
I currently have the I73520m cpu installed, but i would like to replace it with the 3612qm.
The hardware should support it, because they have the same socket (G2), but does the BIOS and/or motherboard support it? -
use SRS audio sandbox or essentials. with it on, sound is a good 20% louder and makes it comparable with other laptops. no distortion either. dolby is nothing compared! -
Oh really. I thought we were supposed to install at least
VAIO Care
VAIO Smart Network
So you installed all that bluetooth stuff etc? -
Haha, that would be sweet. It would make it even more of a monster powerhouse than it is already. I do think though, that things like the CPU and GPU are soldered on. Maybe someone who has opened it up that far can comment?
On a side note, are these even available commercially? I thought they wee only sold to OEMs? -
So Cool .
Thank you Buddy . -
After installing Windows and Office on my new S15, I see free space on C drive diminishing by a whole GB every 4 days on average. I bought this on Sony online, with a 256 GB SSD and after 3 weeks I have only 154 GB free on C drive. No further programs were installed. No visible updates to justify this and I haven’t saved anything on this computer yet. I have just browsed the web, calibrated the display and set Outlook.
What can this be? Can I expect this to stop soon? Can that be a problem with the SSD? -
Why not replace the HDD with a SSD and install the HDD in the optical bay?
-
Maybe if someone sells a second hand 15" model, I will buy it, replace the CPU's and sell the 15" model again
-
Unfortunately I need the optical drive, otherwise this would have been my choice.
-
Tomorrow is my last day to return this S15. I suspect there is a SSD defect. Can someone recommend a software that would reliably scan the SSD (S15 configured and bought on Sony online, thus original SSD).
-
I though you could get hybrid drives but they are expensive. I think someone did try the wwan trick and it wasn't recognized however (an please realize I'm doing this off memory... and may not be exactly correct as I wasn't involved in testing) it was recognized in the WiFi card slot... so if you can give up WiFi that's an option

Assuming you have not done any tweaks to the original OS - this sounds like system restore. You also have some space used from the recovery partition, and same amount of your RAM if hibernation still turned on. You can "tame" system restore's appetite or turn it off in the Control Panel --> system protection. (if you turn it off have another viable system recovery plan/option, i.e. system image)
-
the trick is free space vs total space... if total space is dropping then you have a problem because the ssd is physically loosing space. but loss of free space should not be alarming..... but maybe troubling. could be poor garbage collection but ill be honest im not an expert on flash storage yet.. as i dont own one... but sit down and read up on it because it is a lot more complicated than hdd. garbage, how it wears... ect.
-
i have an ssd how do i get into recovery mode? i want to reset laptop like i got it brand new. i tried esc/f11/f12 didnt work? since its an ssd it loads windows too fast and i dont see an option for settings.
-
its not because of the ssd... all sony's boot fast. the trick is to press and hold the button before you press power. try f8,f11,f12 and delete. sorry i cant say exactly which one it is. as i dont know. i think when i did it i used delete... BUT
BUT. you dont want to get into recovery. a laptop is not like a phone where you can factory reset things and make it go back to factory as there is no rom or rom image... whatever the system files are they are. (unless of course you change the bios features and you want to restore those... but seeing as you are unable to get in i dont think this is what you are going for)
to restore to the factory defaults you need to make a recovery disk (either a 32gb flash drive or 6 standard dvd's... yes 6) you can do this with vaio care (please google this dont ask how to do it.) and then use those to restore the os. this will also restore all sony bloatware and DELETE EVERYTHING ON THE PC -
customer support said click assist key, choose tools, and recovery wizard and then choose restore to factory default or something. trying now
-
it didnt do anything......

I've had the Sony Vaio S 15.5 for 2 days now so I thought I'll give a short review of my current experiences.
1. The machine feels very solid in my hand, the material on the top is great of making sure the computer doesn't slip. It's rough but I like it. Mine is the black version btw. Good build quality I'd say. It's also very light when compared to other laptops around the same size which is great. It is a finger print magnet.
2. The Red = Orange thing is blown out of proportion. Unless you're working with Red's all the time you won't notice it at all. There is a bit of backlight bleed on the monitor, but not bad at all. Beautiful monitor for the most part
3. The keyboard is good. I still have to get used to it though. It definitely feels plasticky, and there is quite a bit of flex on the keyboard (build quality isn't so great in terms of keyboard flex). The backlighting is nice, but would be better if there were Fn commands to turn off or dim the backlight. I've found a way to turn it off via Vaio Control Center so it's not that bad. The trackpad is great for the most part, but palm rejection when typing could be improved. Everything else is a joy though. 2 finger scroll works smoothly, zoom works, 3 finger swipe forward and back is great too. Just the palm rejection is the only bad part about the trackpad and even then it's not that bad.
4. The computer comes with A LOT of bloatware. A LOT. So be sure to get rid of the stuff you don't want (I basically got rid of all the Sony junk that came with it). I still have yet to get rid of all the bloatware. It definitely slows the computer down. If you can do a clean install, do it. You will not regret it I guarantee you.
5. The sound. Seeing this is my first laptop I don't know how bad it really is, but all I will say is that if you're looking for bass, DO NOT GET THIS LAPTOP. I think the loudness is ok for my uses (using Dolby, I'll try other ones later). Speakers should without a doubt be better on a premium laptop like this.
6. Battery life on this thing is bad. Realistically you'll only get about 4hrs on it. It should DEFINITELY be better; 4 hours is not enough I'd say. With the sheet battery it should be much better.
PS: Anyone know why my computer doesn't have the orange sleep light? The green light just turns off ..... there is no light at all. Anyone know why?
EDIT: These are my processes, anyone know which ones I can kill without it affecting my system?

how do i delete everything on my laptop and make it like i just got it? (would this affect the other hdd inside the optical drive slot i replaced?)

Try F2 when you turn on the computer. Just spam it.

f10 and under basically give me the same boot option menu... (not all keys, some do nothing.)

anyone know when another promotion will come out for the S15, both the rebate and the ps3 deal are gone. Is there anything in the near future that will give that kind of savings?

Does anyone know if these AC adapters will work with the s13p? They are both 19.5V 4.7A 90W like the adapter that comes with the s13p, so as long as the power connector fits it should be fine? From the picture it looks the same as the current one.

+1 to your number 3. everything you said is about right. the flex is there but i never feel it. ive come accustomed to shallow chicklet style keyboards and even got one for my desktop. the flex is really only noticable if you look while typing and it is only on the left side... (some say the odd caddy swap firms it up wizzard i think?) anyways. while they feel plasicky i think they do not feel cheap. im typing now and there is a satisfying thud when im really typing. when im at school trying to be quiet its not a chore either...

Alright so I just called Sony and told them about my squeaky keyboard on my Sony Vaio S13P. It shouldn't happen after two weeks of mild use, should it? My Enter key AND Spacebar key are both squeaking now. Up until yesterday it was only the Spacebar. It's only about three weeks old! And Sony said "Well, sorry to hear that. But we can't really do anything about it." So... What now? I can't use it in class as it makes too much noise. Can I fix this in any way without spending 200$ for a repair or something... Thank you!

Protip: Don't accidentally drop one of these beauties on its corner (especially not from 1.5m above a solid floor!), or you will end up with something like this:
Thankfully it's just superficial damage - bit of bent metal and a chunk taken out above the usb2. Amazingly otherwise fine!
Kind of glad I don't have to worry about taking extra care of it now haha -
Thanks a lot. It seems you were exactly right. I will observe space taken by system restore as free space on c drive diminishes.
Before reading your answer I may have done something stupid. I used Windows' disk check selecting "Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors". After rebooting I noticed free space in C drive increased by 1 GB. I hope this disk scan didn't delete anything important.
Is it safe and useful to use this disk scan?
