Thanks a million for the reply . I can only find one z2 keyboard for 210e. Is anything else compatible in keys to the svz.

Not sure how that would affect the controllers though as the pc will still think it is a Danish keyboard?

A part number for a keyboard for the SVZ is A1886450A. If you google for a VPCZ2 service manual, that should point you in the right direction.

There are a couple of Z2 keyboards going on eBay UK, and one is on auction starting at a tenner so that might be the cheapest way to get the keys and if the controller is the same, that also. Luckily all European keyboards have a big enter key so that should hopefully work for you. Just a pity we can never get TPU keyboard covers as the manufacturers only cater for the US International English keyboard which has the single row, rectangle enter key!

The controller which tells the PC what locale the keyboard is. Hmm, I have tried this before but windows would still not give the correct en-gb keybindings on an en-us keyboard.

    Hello, all!

I have recently installed Windows 8.1 without any major problems and subsequently re-partitioned the SSD array into one single partition. The latter action caused me loose the Rapid Wake functionality. I have looked all over internet and found that no-one has managed to re-enable Rapid Wake in such situation, without recovering the PC to factory condition... Silly I know, but I thought Ok, will go through the installation process again...

What I found to my disbelief is that the recovery USB media I had diligently created does not work. It boots up into Windows 7 and then Vaio Rescue software fails to start complaining that "recovery media or recovery partition could not be found"... What's the point of having such recovery software?

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions how to solve this or is prepared to offer their recovery files for a download, so I can try them in hope that there is an updated version of Vaio Rescue.

Many thanks in advance for your help on this

So no one, who posted on the previous 167 pages is prepared to help me out? An Acronis image of the original factory install from a 128 GBP SSD array would also help!

I lost my original recovery flash drive long ago during an office move. I believe Sony sells them direct though?

Also, if anyone is looking, I have a spare PMD that is no longer required.

I really love the VAIO Z. So much so, that I own two 3rd gen models. A Quad core i7 for home, and I picked up a dual core i5 3rd gen for work.

I want these computers to last, and therefore I have been taking every step I can to minimize writes to the SSD's. However what happens if the SSD were to die? I wouldn't want these to become useless bricks. I know some of you might say "By that time something new will be out, and you can just upgrade" or "these will last long enough" or "just RMA it to sony for repair". The VAIO Z hardware is superb and I want to put it to good use for as long as I can.

If the SSD dies in a VAIO Z, what is possible with the hardware? Can you boot a live linux CD? Netboot? or run Linux from a USB stick despite complete SSD failure? Are there any links or tests that people have done along these lines?

after fresh install of 8.1 to my svz 3 major problems emerged (and one not so major):
    1. Lost my rapid wake partition.
    2. can`t figure out how to control automated brightness - sometimes I need it maxed but brightness keep going back to 20-30% even maxim is set in power control options. (probably sony software somehow overrides system settings) also there is no option to turn-off auto control.
    3. vaio update software - how to perform fresh install ? after some attempts - it just either exits during installation or states that there was no opportunity to get hardware configuration and exits.
    4. Secure boot ) - will we get any support from sony or they abandoned us again?

it was fresh install of 8.1 and unfortunatly I can`t find "Display" in my Vaio control centre.
tried to re-install old vaioCC - no success. Tried install latest update - "no software applicable for this update is installed"

Any workaround or ideas how to override it and install latest?

    Thank you.

I am also interested to find a workaround on rapid wake, searched the forums high and low and could not find the solution yet. Creating the right type of partition manually does not work. Vaio Support advice is to recover to factory
image, however this is not possible with the recovery media provided.

I think it should be possible but,
it`s silly to recover to win 7 then install upgrades required for win 8 upgrade, then upgrade to win 8, then install upgrades required for win 8.1 upgrade...
it`s like why reinstall if you`ll get registry and file system full of leftovers crap from old OS versions?

Micax's advice is totally logical. I have created a recovery partition and put a system image on it and have checked that I can access it from either within my windows 8.1 environment or by using a start up stick or with the windows 8 install disk on a stick. From within windows it is via file history/ system image backup and to restore it is the charm bar\settings\change pc settings and the reboot advance option\troubleshoot. If your intention is Rapid Wake only then please don't be offended if I am telling you the obvious. We do that a lot in Ireland.

Sadly I think that you will find that Sony will say they supplied your machine with windows 7 and all they must do is support that original factory state. Even though they have supported your choice to move to 8, and further, by allowing warranty and providing drivers they could say that they didn`t have to. I can, like you, just hope that someone finds a way as I think it unlikely that Sony will spend money on it. Sorry for the negativity but its just my tuppence worth. I have assumed that your machine was a windows 7 machine, I got mine second hand so never had Rapid Wake.

any comparison between rapid wake and hybrid sleep - idle power consumption/wake-up times? may be we don`t need rapid wake with windows 8 hybrid sleep?
However if somebody would be so nice and make and share acronis/paragon copy of service/backup/rapid wake partitions, that will be very appreciated - and will probably help us to integrate rapid wake support to fresh installations of windows 8/8.1

It is really easy to set up the rapid wake partition manually. Just ensure you have some unallocated space and run diskpart from admin cmd line. Create partition of 8300Mb with ID 0x84. Compute offset so you start partition 8300x1024kb from end of disk. This way no wasted space. Then in disk Mgr extend data partition to fill space before hibernation partition. I have my SVZ with just a data and a hibernation partition so I save the space of the 100Mb and recovery partitions. I say 8300Mb because I have 8Gb in my SVZ and 8200 was too little and I do not have time to experiment to find a tighter upper bound.

It seems I have followed exact same steps, but it's not working: when I set the slider in VCC to ON the message comes up that rapid wake can not be enabled, as it requires dedicated partition. Is there something else (registry setting anyone) that needs to be in place for the rapid wake to work? Could you please publish the status of your powercfg?

@Nickolai: how large is your hibernation partition? you will get this msg when it is too small. Is it a primary partition? Is the id 84 hex? Then it should work.

It is set to exactly 4Gb in size and it is also yes to both questions. Shows up as "Hibernation partition" in disk management. I have 4Gb RAM.

If you had read my earlier post it would have been clear that the partition size needs to be a bit larger than the RAM size. If you increase the hibernation partition's size to perhaps 4200MB OR 4300MB, it will work for sure.

This is absolutely correct! I have increased the size of the partition to 4200 Mb and got the rapid wake function back! Many thanks for your advice!

For those who want to get their rapid wake back, the correct sequence of commands is described in the attached document by Intel, however contrary to Intel instructions the size of the partition needs to be larger!

    Hello all,

I have PMD PRZ20A (AMD Radeon 7670). PMD connected to the Yamaha AVR via HDMI.

    I cannot find and enable S/PDIF Pass-through.
For example - when I connect my old VPCZ12 to the same AVR with the same HDMI-cable I have an option in VLC Audio Menu "Use S/PDIF".
I want my AVR take care about 5.1 sound decoding.

    Any possible solutions?

    Thanks in advance

Ooops... solved. VLC Audio Pass-Through Bug in version 2.1.1

    Hey guys,

i'm about the purchase the SVZ131190X US version with Intel Core i5-3210M (2.5 GHz), 8GB ram and 128GB SSD (2x64GB).
I was wondering is it possible to upgrade the processor to the other version which as Core i7-3612QM(2.10 GHz), or even better processor if possible? Had anyone done this? I know I can upgrade the SSD, but i'm not sure about the processor.
And one more question, are there different Power Media Docks versions or is there just one that fits this computer?
    Any advice?
    Thanks!

@chichich: not possible to upgrade cpu. Ssd is Sony proprietary. 512 GB sata2 is not too expensive. Sata3 hard to come by and expensive. I recommend waiting for a configuration you like to appear on ebay or somewhere else.

Ok, so it wasn't just me. Apparently the new driver somehow modifies the refresh rate, I wonder if that causes the black screen.

Has anyone found a way how to disable the trackpad's edge swipe from the right, that brings up the charms on Win 8.1?
It's driving me completely nuts, and none of the ways described on the internet (mouse settings, reg edit) has worked. The latest driver from Synaptics doesn't even install.

My ssd in my svz is MBR formatted. Will my SVZ boot Windows 7 x64 even faster if it were in GPT format? I am trying to decide whether it is worth the trouble of converting the disk.

Right-click the "Noise Canceling Program" icon in the taskbar notification area to bring up the "Noise Canceling Headphones" window. Un-check the box "Display a message when noise canceling headphones are connected".

That gets rid of the message but I don't know if the n/c detection still occurs. That function can also be turned off, however, if you want to use a different headphone.
