Mzrpc512hafu for gen3. Mzrpa512hmfu for gen2. I used to have a gen2 in mine but now have gen3 and it is noticeably faster but both of these SSDs fit the svz.

Excellent write-up. Would have worked the first time except I had an HDMI cable that wasn't the latest! Haven't tried it with the PMD, only the the laptop direct. Monitor is the LG 27EA83R-D. Thanks!!!

I have an Sierra Wireless mc7700 wwan card in my svz and it is working very well with AT&T LTE. The GPS works, too so I am very pleased. I have had two wwan cards die so far probably from overheating. Now this last time I did not use the thermal foam pads Sony had in there and carefully monitor temps. Runs cooler now. Highest I have seen is 48 Centigrade.

A year and a half after I purchased my SVZ131190X I am pretty disappointed. It's falling apart. The power button is cracked, one USB port is intermittently working, and the case flex is terrible. Plus to send it back to Sony for repair means I'm without my primary work computer for ~3 weeks.

I thought when I purchased this it was the best laptop ever. Incredibly fast and light. I am now thinking I need to replace it, and I just don't see anything out there fast and light with better build quality. Is this only my experience, or are others seeing similar build issues?

I'm about a year and a half out as well but mines in perfect shape. I take it back and forth every day in a backpack with a Thule sleeve around it and still using the micro fiber cloth between screen and keyboard.

What is the best battery vendor for a new svz battery? Prefer genuine Sony but will consider aftermarket. Must be at least 4000mAh. Some aftermarket Batts only have 3200mAh capacity. This question pertains to the main battery only VGPBPS27. I already have the sheet battery. Thanks.

I'd go with a highly rated vendor on ebay specifying a genuine new battery. Wouldn't trust 3rd party. Do you have a lot of battery wear? My battery is wearing extremely well compared to my Z1 and I haven't been using the battery care function either. Full discharges and recharges daily. 5.9% wear, bought it the month the SVZ was released.

    Hey all!

I'm thinking of buying one of the Sony XBR TVs, but I'd love to know if my VAIO Z can output in 4K using the new Hd4000 graphics card drivers. Does anyone know? Apparently its capable of it. If that doesn't work, would it work if I bought the PMD?

We know this laptop can drive a u2711 at full res at lower refresh via hdmi so if you install an appropriate driver for 4k it may just work at some very low refresh rate.

I mean the Z has an HDMI 1.4 port which supports 4K resolution at 30Hz (I'm fine with that), and the VAIO Zs onboard HD4000 graphics card is supposed to be able to handle 4K output at those exact specifications. I don't see why it couldn't work.

    The Death of a Z

So my SVZ BSODed on me and shut down. it wouldnt start up again. no green light when i hit the powerbutton. completely dead and no DIY CPR available. the greatest laptop ive ever owner came to its demise two years after i bought it. called sony and told them my baby had just died. they offered me to have the computer picked up and shipped to a repair facility in germany under cover of warranty. now my baby is on its way back home to me, due to arrive before end of the day on thursday. its been gone now for over one week. i miss my baby.

Was extra curious because my SVZ took it's first fall in 2 years (no fault of my own!) and it was extra brutal, maybe saved by the fact that it was plugged in and the DC plug itself took the initial hit on pavement. No scratch on the SVZ but it would no longer charge after. I opened her up, and evened out the DC jack since it seemed a little off, and now it charges with no ill effects on OEM chargers, but one of my spare Targus universal charges has to be played with a bit to make sure it charges. Not happy with that, I ordered a new DC jack to replace it with. Hopefully it clears up the issue.

Recently came into a FREE SVZ1311ZDZB that had a corrupted OS. I reloaded the OEM W7 Pro 64 bit using the COA on the rear cover. Using the Sony E support site I was able to reload all the drivers and some of the software.
So my question is... I have the Sony Dock and when I plug it in; I have two drivers that are missing in the Device Manager and the Sony site does not provide drivers for the Dock.
I am missing the Standard VGA graphics adapter and the Universal Serial Bus Controller. I tried the update driver and searched online, but cant find them.
    Any thoughts ??

Hello. I just bought a Refurbished SVZ131190X i7/8gb/512 in amazing condition. However, the computer won't go into sleep mode when I close the lid. All settings are correct in lid management (vaio control) as well as advanced settings under windows in balanced power plan profile. The computer enters sleep perfectly after time passes per set-up, or when hitting the power button. I had a PC tech look at it and he could not figure it out...did not see a magnet sensor nor a part to order for sleep sensor. We restored to factory settings but still no luck. If anyone can assist I would appreciate it since I am concerned the laptop may power on in my laptop bag inadvertently with closed lid. Sony outsources repairs to Best Buy Geek Squad now, and I would be without the computer for 3 weeks since they ship it out, and they didn't even know if they could fix it. Thank you!

Make sure no video drivers are installed before installing the driver. Also, I believe the PMD has to be plugged in when installing.

The PMD was plugged in when I installed the drivers.
I removed the original installed drivers and installed the W7 version and then went to the Sony e support site for the same model you provided and downloaded the driver for the USB host. All drivers are now installed for the Dock. THANK YOU.....

Can you guys run RealTemp and let me know what your idle and load temps (Prime95 Blend test). Recently applied new thermal paste but I didn't get any screenshots of my before temps, I remember idling in the low 40's and peaking out in the low 80's but nothing specific. After applying , i get idle temps in the upper 37-41. After running Prime95, temps peak out at 77-82-83-80. Seems to be a hair lower, but nothing notable. What I have noticed though, is that it seems slightly quieter. Handles smaller loads slightly better, the fan doesn't ramp up as much. I guess it's too much to except lower load temps, the heatsink despite being high quality, but it being so small along with the small fans, there's only so much thermal dissipation that is possible.

So unless you're getting much higher temps than me or would like a slightly quieter fan on lower work loads, I don't suggest even attempting it as it's kind of tricky getting access to the heat sink. Not for the faint of heart! Make sure you takes photos to know where the screws go and that you have a good amount of time available as it's something you will not want to rush through. Lots of thin wires that require a delicate touch!

If by LTE you mean; can I use a phone SIM card to connect to the internet.... No I donot have that capability.
The 256 or 512 would have been great... but I only have the 128. For FREE.... I am not going to complain.

The Dock has the BluRay capability, but Windows Media 12 and VLC donot play BluRay movies.
Any suggestion on what software to use that performs well and is fairly inexpensive ?

Don't know about inexpensive, but I love the new Cyberlink PowerDVD. It is packed with features, plays all videoformats, has support for facebook and youtube and supports subtitle files. It also has hardware accelleration and improvements to videoquality w/ TrueTheater effects. Supports BlueRay and HEVC 4k. And it's fast. Love it! The live subscription costs 40 quids a year I think and the non-subscription package costs 90 quids I think.

Thouhht you wrote you got a 512 one. Well, 128 is a little on the small side, fills quickly. Get an external usb drive for videos and downloads is my recommendation. As for LTE modem, well, I suppose there's wifi hotspots everywhere these days, so no biggie. Great laptop for free is what it is. Lucky b*stard

Yes the 128 will fill up fast which I why I presently have a 32 Gb SD card installed that I had on hand to provide more capacity until I can locate a larger card.
Also picked up two sheet batteries from the same source....

Presently I have 4Gb of RAM and would like to upgrade to 8 Gb. The drawings I have seen said there are 2 for RAM available.
I have searched around the thread and so far I have not found any detailed instructions on how to disassemble the SVZ1311.
I have taken apart quite a few Sony laptops over the years and have tried to disassemble this one, but I get to a point where after having what appears to be all the screws removed; there appears to be more disassembly needed.
    .

Does anyone have information for disassembly?

Where the bottom of the LCD hits the back of the notebook when fully opened. There are two rubber stoppers, underneath those there are screws you have to remove.

Thanks for the advise....I found the screws hidden under the rubber stoppers and removed them. Continued to disassemble the laptop almost completely, but this laptop is SO MUCH more compact and micronized than the Z1 that I disassembled about a year ago. There came a point where I felt I would probably break a wire or ribbon cable. I have disassembled a couple dozen laptops and this is the first time I decided continuing wasn't worth adding the additional RAM.

yup, it's a huge pain. I recommended at the top of this page that unless it's completely necessary, it's usually not worth accessing the flip side of the motherboard.

Dear SVZ owner, I have a question for you,

I have a SVZ1311C5E, with windows 8.1 installed. Everything works like a charm. Since a couple of days my battery charges only up to 95%, and then stops charging. What might be the problem?

The battery and the PSU are the original one. Vaio Battery Care is not enabled. I already tried a full discharge and recharg but with no luck. Nothing changes if the laptop is turned of. Simply it seems like at 95% the internal circuitry recognizes the battery at "fully charged" and stops charging.

    Thanks for any advice.
