Aside from the fan sound, the higher pitched noise is more like a resonance/overtone.

    Hey guys,

I just did a clean install of my F13 laptop as suggested by Joe Bleau. Got all my drivers running, including the most up to date NVIDIA drivers. These have been running on the old system, too.

Now I notice that my Fn keys are not working as they are supposed to do. Basically, the only key combo that works is Fn / F2, F3, F4 (volume controls).

These 3 combinations do not show the translucent screen overlay though.

Immediately after doing the fresh install, I did not check if this worked with the default video driver. I installed the new NVIDIA driver after a few restarts. So I can't really narrow down the cause. Maybe I need to install some specific software?

Is there anything I can do to get my Fn key working again?

As a minimum, you need to have these installed:
    VAIO Care
    VAIO Control Center
    Settings Utility Series
    VAIO Event Service

VES is the key here. It's what makes the Fn keys and VAIO keys work and show the volume/brightness overlays on the display when you press the buttons.

The update in viao updates solved my blue ray problem, just in time yesterday when I needed it. Thanks Jpride and Anseio!
Corel's own "check updates" within the program not finding anything is a bit humorous. I will start with viao updates next time for everything.

    yes, so 1400 + (1540-1400)/2 = 1470
70mhz is equal differences from standard clocks of both graphic cards

What we have for Corel WinDVD is a very limited form of the software. The update option really only applies to people who have purchased the full version. So, we're stuck waiting for Sony to release the updates necessary. :(

    Hey Folks,
can someone enlighten me please about
    Intel®Turbo Boost Technology Driver ?

I was setting up the WinTV software, which, among other things
attempted to install "Intel®Turbo Boost Technology Driver".
This driver gave the exclamation sign in the Device Manager, I uninstaled it therefore,
and then attempted to reinstall this

    "Intel®Turbo Boost Technology Driver"

    from the sony web-site:

    Sony eSupport - VPCF1390S - Software Updates & Drivers

This latter attempt did not succeed either, aborting the installations with the diagnostics something like "minimum hardware requirements are not met".

Meanwhile the Turbo Boost in my my Vaio seem to function well without the driver.

So is this driver needed at all? if not, why the hell does sony place it in the downloads for Vaio F?

and now I'm lost - does the machine (Vaio F) come originally with or without this driver?

    thanks!

AFAIK, the turbo boost driver is not needed for the turbo to kick-in (I think the functionality is embedded into the chip's firmware). The F originally comes with the driver installed. Not sure what it does tbh (might serve as an update utility or something?).

    Very nice list, ZPerf!

Just wanted to mention that setting AAM down to 128 may, by my experience, reduce real world disk performance by up to 20%. Reducing hard disk noise via AAM is therefore accompanied by a not insignificant performance penalty.

Note that the 20% performance hit was a result of tests I did using Seagate ST32000542AS drives.

Disabling the sleep states is a fix for the CPU/chipset high pitched noise, #3 on ZPerf's list.

You have #1 and #6 on ZPerf's list.

    Hello everyone,

I just bought a new Sony Vaio F-13 with all the bells and whistles save for the SSD and the upgraded processor. I am very impressed with the notebook so far (only had it about a week but still impressed) however I'm having a couple of problems and wondered if any of you might be able to help.

First I'm having a problem with hooking the computer to my Sharp 32" LCD television via the HDMI cable. The computer appears to display fine in 720 but will not display properly in 1080. When I go to 1080 the image looks, well for lack of a better term, fuzzy and it also seems to shake and vibrate a bit. You can see the image but it is obviously of poor quality and looks like it's flickering a lot (especially at the top of the screen). Now it's important to note that my Sharp LCD is older (about 5 years old) and only is able to display 1080i not 1080p- however the computer reports this is what it is outputting. Also I have a Playstation 3 and it is able to display 1080i to the Sharp just fine so I know it is capable of doing this. I've messed with a lot of different settings and still cannot get the display to show up right. If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate the help.

Second I was wondering if anyone knows how to override or change the Sony setting that does not allow the computer to power up with the lid closed. Basically I want to be able to turn on the computer while keeping the kid completely shut and right now the power button is useless unless I open the lid (which in my mind makes me wonder why they put it on the outside). Anyway I'm using the laptop on a sailboat and want to be able to hard mount it closed (so when I'm sailing it doesn't move) and still be able to power it up and display it on the Sharp LCD monitor. If there is a way to either disable the "lid closed" switch or tell the computer that I want it to allow use of the power button with the lid closed I would love to know about it.

Thanks so much for the help.

    -Levin

What projector mode are you using? Connect to the TV, then press Fn+F7 for projector options. Choose Projector Only and see what happens.

Might want to check the settings for the refresh rate of the monitor.

No idea about this, it is annoying though. I just turn on the laptop before shutting the lid.

mmm123, first I want to point out that I don’t experience all those noises with my notebook(s), so some of them I know based on what others described or sound samples they attached. So please consider this when you read my response.

What I can hear in your sample is what dmk2 already mentioned:
    1. Fan whistle/whine at certain speeds (different people experiences this at different fan RPMs!)
    6. Constantly varying fan speed (and the associated varying fan noise)

I can’t tell if you experience the “3. High frequency electrical whine, CPU/chipset whine kind of noise”, because that is a much higher frequency noise. I would say by ear sensing, that it is a noise somewhere in the 7..12 KHz range. Your audio file is sampled at 8 KHz, which means that the highest reproducible frequency would be 4 KHz, but the 24 Kbps MP3 encoding took care to reduce this even more to 3..3.5 KHz. Also add to this your microphone’s quality and capability of capturing that noise.

I don’t know solutions/fixes other then what I mentioned in my post.

    Anseio:

I don't think I'm using a projector mode. I just plug in the HDMI cable and it sends the signal out to the television. I then mess with the resolution settings either through Windows itself or through the Nvidia control panel. I'm not sure if doing something through the projector mode would help. Does the projector go out through the HMDI cable?

    Thelulz:

Thanks for the thoughts on refresh rate. I think my television defaults at 60hz and this is what the computer is putting out. So likely isn't the problem but I could try different settings and see what happens.

BTW any other ideas about the power button problem? I really want to be able to turn on the computer with the lid closed. I have searched all through the power settings and have seen no way to change this. I suppose I could essentially deactivate the lid closed switch if I knew where that was but would really prefer not to do this if there is a software way around the problem.

    Thanks again for the help.

In nvidia cp choose yr tv as a display and create custom resolution for it, or it should give you option to choose 1920x1080, also resolution is limited to x1200 max on external display. Also keep in mind nvidia driver can be a problem, try diffrent drivers.. Yeah poor hdmi cable can be a problem too..

    mmm123:

I've tried the custom resolution setting in the Nvidia control panel with no luck. In fact every time I use that the whole screen goes black even if I set it to a resolution that I know works (i.e. one I have used before from the standard settings). Perhaps this is a driver issue because if a resolution works from the standard settings then if I input it through the custom setting it should also work right?

Do you have any advice on better drivers and where I might find them? This might be a place to start.

    Thanks again,

You can get the latest driver here: Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

With an F13 with GT 425 GPU, you have very limited options as far as trying out previous drivers because they were not supported by Sony until the latest driver. So, you can really just try the latest driver on Nvidia site or the one that came with your laptop. But future drivers should be supported now.

You can also look for beta drivers on the GeForce site: http://www.geforce.com/#/Drivers
FYI- that site is in Beta itself and can be unstable.

Hey everyone, I'm new around here - I've been following this thread the last couple of weeks, but this is the first time I've posted.

Anyway, my Vaio F Series (4gb RAM) came today (two days early, via FedEx - love it), as did the 8gb RAM I bought off Newegg; I was wondering if anyone might be able to point me to a good RAM install walkthrough/guide for the F series - a techy friend of mine has mentioned all I need is a phillips head screwdriver and ten minutes of spare time, but I've never done anything like this before (a custom install, that is) so any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

If you're using the display and the TV at the same time, you're taxing the GPU, and are confined to the limitations of your display. For example, I've got the 1600x900 display. If I hook up to my friend's 1080p tv and have it duplicate my display, the best resolution the TV can show is 720p. Once I change from Duplicate to Projector Only, then the TV shifts to 1080p. So, to troubleshoot, you need to set to Projector Only and troubleshoot ONLY the TV as it relates to the drivers/hardware. You need to rule out the VAIO display/workload.

Extremely easy. Take off memory door underneath laptop and replace memory. I'm not at home to look for myself but it should be illustrated in the user manual that is on the laptop.

Edit: on the f13 manual I downloaded from sony on my phone, instructions start on page 102.

You're welcome. Just got home. In the manual that's actually on my laptop, the memory install instructions start on a different page - 107 - but of course just look in your table of contents if you have a different version and can't find it. You won't have any trouble replacing the memory and the manual instructions are as detailed as anything you're going to find.

    Hi guys,
    I have quick question..
My F13 i7 Win7 64bit Pro can't seem to be able to simply capture the screen(as in "copy") by pressing Prt Sc button, and pasting it into photoshop cs.

    what am i doing wrong?

Just to clarify - is this a problem only with photoshop? I don't have photoshop cs to try it. I can press Prt Sc and paste into Paint with no problem. Can you not copy and paste the screen into anything or just photoshop cs?

i tried paint, and word doc.

I press Prt Sc and open new doc in photoshop, paint or word, and paste is not available. When i press Ctrl-V nothing happens.

om my old laptop, when i press Prt Sc, and open new document in paint or photoshoop, a blank 1920x1080 blank document would appear automatically sensing copying the 1920x1080 screen capture. Then i would just paste the image.

any suggestions. Maybe something needs to be enabled in Win 7 or laptop (F13) itself ?

    thanks in advance

All you should be doing is pressing Prt Sc/SYS Rq (or ALT+Prt Sc for a top window only capture).

For Photoshop (CS5 at least), you must create a new canvas before you can paste your screen capture. File > New...

I had no problem pasting directly into paint after opening it. Did not need to create a new file first.

update: ok, I only half read your post and didn't catch that you're already opening a new file.

Got no clue what the problem is. Safe Mode? Different user login? Can you try either of those?

The easiest solution I can think of is to use two fingers to crack the laptop open a half inch, press the power button, then close. It needs to be open just a little. I wonder if this is a physical mechanism, like how a refrigerator light goes on and off, or something else? Put that sailboat to good use and fish! Fishing Network Message Boards

    Hello again!

So there is no soultion/fix for the high-pitched whistling from the fan? I kinda decided that I will keep my F13 anyway but would still like to know how to eliminate or at least lessen this problem. Is it likely that my F13 will get louder with time?

About the screen - 1440:900 is just right for me, but that's not 16:9. Full HD is too small for me so I'd like to have something like 1440:900 resolution but in 16:9 scale. But there's no such setting so now I'm stuck with black stripes on the L & R side of the screen. Do I need a special program for custom screen resolution? Would that be safe for my screen and graphic card?

I was a XP user 'till now and I don't like 7 too much. How do I get them to look and work more like the XP? I miss the XP Windows Explorer, I hate those locks on the folders (permission something...) etc.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    1440x900 cannot be a 16:9 aspect ratio. It's 16:10

If you don't want the Full HD resolution on your display, you can change down to 1600x900. If it's a text size problem, you can change that too by going to Start Menu, typing "text and selecting "make text and other items larger or smaller".

It'll take some getting used to, but 7 is a good system. What are you doing that you're interacting with folders that have locks on them? You shouldn't be bumping into those on a regular basis.

I have this locked folder problem too. I have never used Win 7 before and it's been driving me crazy but I keep forgetting to find out how to fix it. Here is an example pic. I am logged into the administrator account (the only account on the machine) and am not allowed to change the security properties of these folders.

All you can do (and I did that for me) is to check the box "hide protected system folders" and forever forget that they do exist :) Still you will see other hided folders

Documents and Settings should not be a protected system folder though....

My assumption is that Documents and Settings folder is not the same as it was in XP. In XP user folders were in the D&S folder. They're not in 7. There should be no reason to try to access this folder, especially since it's a system/proctected folder. You can always explore it in Linux if you needed to. It never even crossed my mind about that folder.

I encounter a problem with it quite often when I am navigating folders and do the equivalent of an UP to go to the parent folder. Like if I am in a subfolder of My Documents and try to go back up to My Documents it is locked and I have no access. I have to re-navigate. It gets quite frustrating.

And it would seem, that even though there is a separate Users folder with the user accounts in it in Win 7 that somehow that user account is still under Docs and Settings. In my previously posted pic, you can see the "J" folder under the Docs and Settings in the left hand pane. That's my account. I think somehow this is the root of the issue but I don't know the fix.

Maybe I just have to learn to totally change the way I'm used to using my computer. I went from XP to Win 7 - no Vista - so I guess they completely re-designed things.

That's very interesting to look at. I don't understand why your "J" folder is housed under docs/settings. Did it import from XP or something?

The "J" folder should be here:
    C:\Users\J\Documents
    C:\Users\J\Pictures
    ...

    In my 8mths of Win7 I've never interacted w/ the D&S folder.

So, I guess my question is...
What do you have listed under C:\Users\?
Did you relocated your user folders to be under docs/settings? You can relocate them to their original placement by going to the folder, right clicking, Location, Default. It should put the folder back in the Users directory.

The J folder is also under C:\Users\ which is how I re-navigate to my docs and such but then when I'm in those folders it seems to think I am in the locked Documents and Settings if I try to navigate to parent folders.

    The folders under C:\Users\ are:
    All Users
    boinc_master
    Default
    Default User
    J
    Public

I did not relocate the folders and they seem to exist simultaneously in both places - C:\Users and Docs and Settings. Don't know how this happened. Been that way since the beginning. I did transfer my documents files from my last computer to this one but I did it manually into the My Documents folder, not through some backup software.

Edit: Eventually, I'm going to do a clean install, which may take care of this. I was going to wait until I had the laptop for about a year, but maybe I'll end up doing it sooner now that I know this is not something everyone is experiencing. Can't do it right now though so still have to deal with this.
