Agreed. The updated driver that softens the sensitivity makes the pointer much more usable.

I saw a Vaio P for the first time last Saturday.

I like the form factor, the build quality, the weight, the keyboard :)

Unfortunately, the screen resolution is too high for me :( I cannot read Vista font. For example, when Vista displays an error/help message when I had entered a wrong password to open a session.

I hope Sony will relase a P2 with low resolution screen.

OK, so does anyone know if the XMB OS runs from the BIOS or partition 1 ?? Still trying to get to grips with this and I'm dying to strip it back to XP. But I don't want to screw it all up :)

I believe the reason there is no GPS software pre-installed with the European versions of the sony vaio p is because of the EU regulations

Now Vaio P has been released, nobody speak about it

I mean, this thraad activity is very low compared to the buzz Vaio P created when it was rumored, revealed and announced.

Ok I had a chance to have a play with one of these in a store over here in Australia. Very small little machine, can't complain about portability! Screen's res was unbelivable, hurt trying to read stuff.

Had a look at the price, nearly collapsed. $2300 friggin Australian dollars?!?! Whaaaa?! How can Sony be charging this much for what is essentially a more portable netbook? I like Sony, and I really like the form factor on this one, but $2300AU?!?!

Why would you get this one when you could pick up a HP Mini 2140 (a very nice looking little machine) for $700AU?

Same here, I will just wait for the next refresh of the P. Hopefully is going to have Windows 7 installed. I expect also a matte black model, not glossy.

would you be so kind as to clarify which 1080p videos you played...I assuming by 1080p you mean 1920x1080 resolution

as for hi=rez does this play 1024x576 vids in XVID or h.264/x264 smoothly?

I bought a Sony P and loved it at first but after I found out that I could not watch video's and that the Canada Version does not have GPS   I sadly :( returned it and bought the Sony TT. I love the TT but it is pricey!!!! I will look at the Sony P again when Windows 7 is out. It is a nice notebook.

Like Pommie, I was aghast at the Australian price for the P and wondered if I could pick one up substantially cheaper when I go to Tokyo in a couple of months.

Unfortunately I don't speak Japanese, but from my attempted interpretation of the Sony JP web site ( http://www.jp.sonystyle.com/Product/Vaio/P/p90ns_s_hs.html ) it seems to me that the starting price for a very basic P with 1.33 CPU, 60 GB HDD and Vista Home Basic is around Y79,800 (US$810 or AU$1,265) in Japan.

A higher spec model with 1.66 CPU, 64 GB SSD and Vista Home Premium is Y104,800 (US$1,063 or AU$1,660).

Does anyone know if this is correct?

What do you mean when you say that you couldn't watch video's? Any video or only hd?
I mean, if I download a movie, the P is not able to play it??

It seems that this is NOT new and a concept which is over two(!) years old but that only really surfaced now. At least this is what we can read here on Lenovo's very own blog (Design Matters section). There is also a few more pictures there.

    http://lenovoblogs.com/designmatters/?p=1030

The design and concept is truly intriguing and it would be very interesting to see how this would perform in real. Yet so far, and for the last two years, this is only a concept but perhaps with the latest fuzz around the Vaio P Lenovo decided to give it a new try???

    Hi Guys,

The Vaio P series has drawn me back to Sony. I have to say I'm liking it so far. Got the P19WN in the UK which comes with both batteries so this is stacking upto be my perfect mobile device with built in WWAN/GPS/High Res screen/All day without needing a socket (using both batteries).

The main problem I have right now is the lack of case choices. Ideally I'd like one of the following, in order of preference:

    1) Something just big enough to carry the laptop, spare battery and charger.
    2) Something large enough to carry just the laptop (+spare battery would be plus), but fully protect it.
    3) Just a robust sleeve for the laptop which can slip into my current bag.

The problem is Sony only seem to offer two options right now. A neoprene case which I wouldn't really trust to protect it in my regular bag. Or a leather case which again I wouldn't trust to protect it in my regular bag.

Ideally I need something with a soft interior and outer shell which can take an impact. Has anyone found anything suitable?

If not I'm leaning towards getting one of the cheap ebay leather cases and using it in conjuction with a neoprene case. I.E. Laptop -> Neoprene Case -> Leather case. Not ideal as I'd need to flip open the leather case and unzip the neoprene case, but the most suitable workaround until something meeting my requirements turns up

    Interesting, thanks man. :)

I don't think for a redesign, Sony just released this model few months ago and I think is quite succesfull.
Maybe they will put the new Atom processor 2.0 ghZ...untill is what I hope! I would like to see a much better battery life, especially when Samsung is releasing some netbooks that they claim 11 hrs

Processor update is the most obvious and likely prediction.

I get the feeling the Q designation may mean carbon fibre finish. And that will probably be reserved for the top spec SKU to ensure everyone can tell you paid through the nose for the best :D

I actually wanted to finally order my Vaio P today from the German Sony Style Online Store. The model I was aiming for is the Sony Style exclusive top spec'd model Vaio P VGN-P19VRN/Q with the 1.6GHz, 128GB SSD and the additional large battery. To my astonishment the model was nowhere to be found in the online store. It's not like it was listed but not available/ on back order, no it's completely off the list. Only the regular 1.33 models in all four colours are listed.

An indication that new, differently spec'd models are coming soon? Does anyone know more? I sent an email to Sony Style and am anxious to read what they have to say...

Update: I just received an email from Sony saying that they temporarily delisted the VAIO VGN-P19VN/Q due to supply problems. They expect that it will not be available again before the end of April. Sounds a bit fishy to me because two out of the four other (low spec) models are also on back-order at the moment - yet you can still pre-order them and be notified once they are available again. So why not the P19VN/Q?

I heard something about June, but it seems too late for Sony to refresh it's series every 6 months.

    FWIW, check out Waterfield Designs

    http://www.sfbags.com/products/sleevecases/sleevecases-netbooks.htm

Look at the chart on this page and you'll see that they've listed the P now...

I had them make a sleeve for my Fujitsu P1610 and fits great, very well made, and pretty quick service.

Well.....depends, doesn't it on whether or not you need/want P now?

If you do, buy now and use it...otherwise, you can wait...

Of course, the problem with waiting is that nobody really knows for sure when Sony will actually release updated models and when they will actually start shipping so that you can actually get one, right?

So, what if they get announced in June or July and then start shipping in August or September?

What will you use in the meantime??

Also, from what I've read, this won't be major update, just minor refresh....so, is that worth waiting several months for?

This is the proverbial technology question, isn't it?

    ;)

PS. You know what will happen if you wait until summer? Just as you're about to place order for one of the refreshed P's, you'll read a rumor that there's going to be refreshed P's coming in December or January, then what will you do???

    :)
