has anyone posted the steps required to swap the standard (non-ssd) drive with an Intel X18 ssd? I've scanned through this entire thread and it sounds like people have done it. I just bought the x18 this weekend and any guidance would be much appreciated.

ooooh is that a 1.8" SSD? I might have to go shopping if it is....

(My TT has the 1.8" HDD not the 2.5" standard drive)

yeah, the x18 has been getting cheaper... I want the 160gb model though, so I think I'll wait a bit longer for the prices to come down.

Can someone that has a TT + a docking station try out driving 2 external LCDs (one in DVI + one VGA)? Using a USB-to-VGA converter won't do a good job with 1920x1200 resolution so I want to use the native ports on the docking station.

It happened... my TT fell on the ground (don't ask why....) and now the casing is a little damaged.
Does anyone of you know about how much the repair cost will be? About how long will it take to get this fixed?

So I have pretty much decided on purchasing the Sony TT. Now I have a few questions. I want to tripple boot and one of the OS I plan to run in ubuntu 9.04(maybe the beta of 9.10 if its better). I want to know is everything working fine in Unbuntu or do I have to do a few hacks and such to get things fully working? Also I know this not a netbook, even though it is almost sized like one, but would Netbook remix be a good idea on this? I know NBR is for Atom chips; however, the one you currently get on their site is i386 architecture instead of the LPIA(that works better with Atom), so I am to believe that it should work seeing as the C2D chip in the TT is of course an i386 chip.

The next question I have is, I plan to do some video editing(nothing super crazy, but nothing too simple either) and I want to know if the 4500hd is suitable for use with Premier Elements? If screen size becomes an issue I can always hook it up to my 15in samsung monitor or 20in tv and use my wireless mouse and keyboard.

    Thank you.

well, i installed the 80GB Intel X18 SSD yesterday (replacing my standard 120GB Toshiba 5400RPM) by following those japanese dissassemly instructions (i referenced in an earlier post) and i am extremely happy with the results! Once you get the keyboard off, the drive is really easy to take out and replace (just one screw).

After installing Win7 RC1 my boot up time is around 5 seconds and applications open almost instantaneously...not to mention that the laptop is completely silent (when the fan isn't running), not sensitive to vibration, consumes less battery, cooler, and just 'feels' more like tighter piece of equipment.

FYI, my tt model is the vgn-1130n with 2GB's of RAM.

highly recommended for anyone with $370 USD burning a hole in their pocket :)

I'm *really* tempted to get an X18m now, but I don't feel so comfortable opening up my computer when the instructions read like this:

" This keyboard is designed to target the keyboard and type in BUREZU well have been from behind the panel, multi-point welding. "

So it's really not too bad to open up?

I really like the performance of the SSD drive, but at that price I wish it was a 100gb drive.

The wording makes no sense so i just used the pictures. Primarily the pictures that color code the screws and show you where they are.
Basically, I took a bunch of cups from the kitchen and as I was taking it apart I put the screw from each color into a seperate cup. Once all the screws have been removed i pulled on the keyboard and it was a bit stuck near the big chrome hinges...if you just push gently from the bottom (from the battery compartment) both clips will release and the only thing connecting the keyboard to the laptop is a ribbon cable. I just kept the ribbon cable connected, laid a piece of paper on the screen and laid the keyboard on the screen while i removed the hard drive...

also, i should say that the boot up time is actually 10 seconds...not 5 like i originally mentioned...i should have actually timed it before i stated that . Regardless, it's faster that any pc i've ever had :)

I experienced these same results with an old HP laptop that i put the Intel X25M in -- only I used XP not W7.

Here's part of the reason. From the manufacturer, the specs on these drives are as follows:

Samsung 64GB MLC SSD (the drive i have in my TT)
    Read Rate=90MB/s
    Write Rate=70MB/s

    Intel X18-M MLC SSD
    Read Rate=250MB/s
    Write Rate=70MB/s

The difference is huge when booting up. The only thing stopping me from putting the Intel in mine is i'm too afraid to take the thing apart.

As I reported in another post, the Samsung is a joke compare to the Intel SSD drive or even other hard drives.

    Its tricky, but not impossible.

I took a sheet of paper and sketched a rough drawing of the back of my TT and marked where I took out the screws and placed the screw in place on the paper (if that makes sense.)

The damn screws are different sizes and it is hard to tell them apart.

Also, lifting the keyboard off did cause me some palpitations; the keyboard is connected by a ribbon cable that is oddly shaped. And there are some very sharp edges in there - so beware!

The odds are that you're probably be okay. There are more people on the forums that have not had issues with the touchpad, than there are people that have. Also if the problem affected more than a small percentage of units, you'd figure sony would have done something about it -- otherwise their customer service would be completely overwhelmed processing repairs, returns, etc.

Edit: OK, I created a poll to once and for all determine whether this is a widespread problem or not.

Is there a way to set the 'S1' hotkey to play/pause for itunes or WMP? It's not a standard option in the vaio control centre.

It IS in the Vaio control center. Main menu, Special Buttons. Once you click 'Open' you can program both the S1 and S2 buttons. 'Launch Application' in one of the dropdown options -- kinda hard to miss actually...

The Vaio I bought here in Australia was definately made in Japan. Its the same model for the SE Asian and Chinese market, came with the power adapter lead for the Asian market as well.

There were also a lot of stickers saying made and assembled in Japan all over it as well :)

maybe yours is CTO TT? sorry if it doesnt make sense as i never experience CTO built for sony.

like geeky said, for SE Asian/Asia, its only from Japan, and usually doesnt have an option to customize.

anyway doesnt matter where it comes, as long as the notebook doesnt give much headache/break down always.

I want to replace the 160 gb Standard HD to SSD.
    Is this SSD ok?
    Intel X18 - Solid State X18-M Mainstream - 160Gb
    Model SSDSA1MH160G101 - Type Micro SATA SerialATA/300
    http://www.span.com/product_info.php?cPath=23_498&products_id=25695

Is it possiblel to put 2 of this SSD like the original Sony configuration (2 SSDx128Gb).
    Thank you.

I think that is true. But to me the VAIO TT just feels "cheaper" than my old TZ did. The TZ was made in Japan and TT made in USA but am just wondering for those who had a TZ and now a TT if you noticed that too.

Well I thought I would just post my goodbyes to the TT and Sony folders :(

I have now sold my Vaio TT thanks to Fleabay and have purchased myself a nice new 13" Macbook Pro as I am very much over Windows all together :p

It has been most fun, and whilst I will always love the time I have had with my little TT, I am having some major Macbook Pro loving instead to take my mind away from the seperation

Yes I tend to change laptops at the drop of a hat lol

Just wanted to say thanks for all the great advice in this thread, and some of the interesting comments I have read ;)

So long, and thanks for all the fish

TT is the same as TZ typical SONY BS, can't get the wwan working with a colean vista install, on the tt at least it detects it put you have to hot plug with the AC jack to get it working each time you waant to use it.

Also wouldn't pay more than £600 for a TT, used it, good battery that's about it

i've just dumped the vista business 32 bit and replace it with a 64 bit version.
everything is working fine, except the missing wwan driver. i've already found a working gt connection manager... only the wwan modem driver is giving me a headache.
    can somebody help out? :)

Certainly was running Ubuntu on the TT, but I am now equally impressed with OSX. ;)

I still have my little Dell 700m for my love affair with Linux, and am now looking to dual boot the MBP with Ubuntu as well :D (just to see if I can do it hehe)

The TT is a beast and I will always stand by that statement - it served me well, gave me some grief, however its a wonderful little piece of kit - but as they say the grass is always greener!

so got this in another thread but the sony tt with an option of 8gb ram is out with the 1.6ghz as an option now from dynamisis. I wonder if the 8gb bios can be updated to current owners bios for 8gb support cause if that the case i am getting a older 1.4ghz model.

Absolutely. When I took delivery and the new Sony field wore off (a couple of days - the Sony field has always been much less powerful than the Jobs Reality Distortion Field, which can last a whole month even for me - but then in the case of Sony, it hasn't actually needed the field before) I was not best pleased. But the netbookesque aesthetics and the inferior-to-TZ tactile aspects aren't the worst part - the panel fit (or not, as the case may be) is one of the major issues for me.

Functionally it's definitely an improvement on the TZ, but as a package I definitely wasn't feeling it. I would go so far as to say it is my worst Sony ultraportable to date and by quite a large margin - and that's a very unusual and depressing feeling to have, because I cannot recall a flagship Sony ultraportable I've had that's been a dud compared with what else is out there at the time.

General question to TT owners out there because I'm curious:

    - What structural problems (if any) have you had with your TT?
    - What would be points you would improve about the TT (and of course, assuming we're talking about a long-runtime, compact machine which isn't going to be packing a 'full' C2D or a GPU), and why?

I don't have my TT yet, but based on using other machines with the Intel GMA gpu(like the 950, and the 4500 non hd) I can say that the weakest part of the computer is the GPU. I would think they could add a lower power nvidia or ati card that would consume a little more power with the same heat level.
Now that they added 1.6ghz and 8gb of ram to the updated model power is going to be better. And hopefully by the begging of fall we see another speed bump to 2.0ghz.
