I just hope the P7450 doesn't hold me back compared to a P8700 but I doubt it. Pretty sure 4 gigs of ram will do the work.

On sonystyle.com you can apply a student discount to purchases. Its either 5 or 7%, its hard to tell. (It says 7% on the site but the manager at a sonystyle store said it was 5%...)

 

Wow. These guys (or this guy?) at DataVision are not helping me or themselves right now... I can't have it shipped to my address at school. I have to send it to the matching address on my card (home) which is exactly what I didn't want to do, lol. So, at best, I'd have to send it home (free shipping), then have it sent here (for however much).

 

When you are on the SonyStyle site, at the bottom of the page is a link under "Contact" for the "Education Store". Discounts of "Up to 7%" on VAIO notebooks, and 10% on accessories and some other items for qualifying students and staff. They did ask me to identify my school, but didn't ask for proof. It saved me about $43.

They don't seem to discount software for students though, so I went to my school's IT services center and picked up the Win 7 Ultimate upgrade for $20, and MS Office 2007 Enterprise Edition for $50. Any US college is likely to have similar discounts, as long as you qualify.

 

Coupon code only works in the checkout page! Store people and phone reps, don't know about it.

Quick question.. any ideas how to maintain the battery life? I dont want it to run out in 20 minutes like my older laptop

soooo my sony speakers came today (i ordered them from Amazon because i have heard that the laptop has low sound) and my laptop case came last week

now all i need is my laptop *sigh*

question: recently, I've been reading some posts talking about the effectiveness of the P7450. I customized that with the nvidia GT230M. I do plan to game as well as listen to music, school work, etc. I did not feel the need to get anything higher than the P7450, but now with recent posts I am starting to question my configuration.

The P7450 is more than sufficient for the majority of games since the GPU is usually more important. If you don't play any RTS games, then I wouldn't worry about the CPU.

I will probably stick with Sims3, L4D, things I can't play on my ps3. I would have liked to play Rise of Nations or Age or Empires, but its not the end of the world.

 

Most of us who have configured the P8700 processor is because of the VT option(used for win xp mode) which becomes available with it. For games n all, like david pointed out, the P7450 should be quite ok.

 

What is this VT?

Well, I received a survey request from Sony Style concerning a problem ticket for a question and comments concerning some of their website problems.

They obviously didn't bother reading my earlier reply, as while the question was moot since the unit had shipped and this had been reported by their system two days before their assistant got around to answering, I also commented AGAIN concerning the continuing website bugs and other problems.

Let's just say that I was not kind on the survey. I have nothing but praise for the rep. that I "chatted" with on-line while deciding on my configuration. But, whoever was handling their email problem/question response system was way late, they didn't mention the other issues, and had no business sending a survey when there are still what I consider to be open issues that at least deserve a comment in reply. I did my time in the barrel doing and training others in technical support decades ago, and have little tolerance for those individuals and companies that can't get at least the basics right.

OK, switching OFF "rant mode." I'm just really annoyed that the survey didn't have a "Comment" section. I'm still hopeful that they'll escalate my last email higher as I requested, so maybe some of the problems will be addressed.

 

oh for crying out loud, bestbuy just rolled back their price to 799 a day after i bought mine for 849.. sucks..

rant: i been researching and Learning everything about laptops just in the past maybe two months. Learned A lot starting from a stupid limited knowledge of computer components. BUT i Finally came to a conclusion, today, that i wanted a CW and was heart broken after the long wait and patience to see i can't build it as i wanted.

p8700. 4gb ram, gt230. 500gb. royal indigo. blue ray- not to big a deal for me.

anyway. i did read through the last few dozen pages here. maybe i missed it but any idea how long itll take to get royal indigo, but More importantly gt230??

i'm gonna be using this for a lot of music playing movie watching. school. and hopefully anything my heart desires! haha jk, but not much of a gamer. but i do work on photoshop and illustrator. and a heavy multi tasker. im a fourth year mechanical engineer student and i'm gonna be installing Solid Works 2009. should i wait for the gt230 or could the lower model suffice. AND if i choose to wait, will the prices rise at all??? i don't mind waiting if the price stays the same cuz i noticed it a lot of the components were marked down. thank you plenty.

Regarding your question about the GT230m needed to run the SolidWorks 2009 software. I few things I found for you.
First of all I found on this list of SolidWorks system requirements ( http://www.solidworks.com/sw/support/SystemRequirements.html), that SolidWorks 2009 does NOT run on Windows 7 x86 or x64 versions, only the SolidWorks 2010 supports Win 7. If you upgrade to SW 2010, then I found the following info.

I found this Video Card testing/certification site on the SolidWorks.com website ( http://www.solidworks.com/sw/support/videocardtesting.html) and found the the slowest nVidia Video card they list as "Certified" for the Solid Works 2010/Windows 7 x64 is the nVidea Quadro Fx Go 370m. Then according to the benchmarks, the G210m (the slower card that comes on the CW) is well above the ranking for the FX 370, so I would say you'd be safe going with the slower card G210m for the CW:

Little FYI I just discovered...the T6600 CPU have the 800 MHz but speed, while the P7450 and P8700 have the 1066 MHz bus speed. Maybe if the Bus Speed of the CPU is the same as the DDR3 RAM (1066 MHz) it will allow the RAM to run at it's native speed? Does anyone know if my statement is true? In other words if a person has the T6600 will the RAM be limited to it's bus speed of 800 MHz?

I believe that it is a bottleneck from what I found on different sites. I got the T6600 as well. But I heard the performance increase is barely noticeable.

Can anyone confirm this?

 

well I Played around with the cw at the sonystyle store with the T6600 and i found it faster than my mom's Vaio FW with a p8400 but maybe its because the fw is a 1080p resolution. but it was extremely fast when i used it

anyone who ordered their laptop on 11/27 have an esd of 11/30 on sonystyle.com? I'm assuming that their website is faulty.

 

yep, mine says 11/30 still when i ordered 11/27 but my est ship date is dec 9-15 from what the customer support lady told me. lucky youget to go to the game, but im for giants

Yes..You are right. Even though a procesor is said to run at higher speed, its defined for internal processes. Externally the speed is controlled by the FSB, so a higher FSB means the processor can communicate with external RAM at a much faster speed.

 

The coupon for accessories should come in the box along with the laptop. So be patient

I would be careful with ground, they came to deliver my laptop Saturday, but unfortunately I was not home. I'm told they would redeliver this Tuesday, but when I was looking at my tracking status it said it was delivered and signed by someone else. Come to find out the driver 20 minutes after attempting to deliver it to my house accidentally delivered it to someone else. I am told that the driver went back for it and it will still be here Tuesday, but I am ridiculously mad because I would be willing to bet that FedEx would have never told me about this little mishap had I not searched the net. I just hope it wasn't opened and played around with or I will be raising hell.

 

Oh my god.......Actually I've had problems with both Fedex and UPS before. UPS is just like your case, I wasn't home the first time to get my textbook and flashcards and then I don't know how he entered it in his computer, but I checked the site status and it says "Wrong address, address corrected" and it got delivered to somebody else 10 blocks away......I called up UPS and guessed what? That lady went telling me oh that person live close to you, I've contacted her, I'm willing to give you the address so you can go over and pick it up. I was like ~_~ and then later she said well either that or the other way around. And yeah that person came over that nite, said "I'm sorry, I thought the books were mine and I opened it and I opened the flashcards too" I just T_T well you can't even look at the name on the box and all?.....And what's worst, she just threw the flashcards back in the box, it was all over the place
For FedEx, I had a PSP coming....again I wasn't home and the 2nd time that I am home, the guy just pass by my house and enter in his machine that Customer is not available. I had my old man out there watching it going by in the speed of light while I kept refreshing the status. Again ....and my old man has to chase the truck for some 20 blocks for it...and the guy just told my old man...."I thought no one will be home so I'll make another attempt later.".......how can you think no one is home when you didn't even stop by....

My first impression after opening it was how thin the rubber is. It's very thin, but strong enough that it wont rip or tear easily. It fit right over the keyboard without any problems. I'm not the best typer in the world, but it doesn't affect my typing at all. You can tell that the skin is on when you hit a key, but it's not obtrusive. At least I don't think so. It fits pretty snug and doesn't move around.

It didn't come across in the pictures, but the skin is dark black, not gray as it appears above.

 

anyone actually found a laptop sleeve which is designed for this widescreen sized laptop?
