Sony generally comes out with the best deals during the thanksgiving. there can be some sort of upgrades dring the christmas holidays. You should look out for deals from other vendors like newegg or amazon. They may have something or the other during the holidays.

 

is it advisable to get their service plan?

 

Sony generally have low failure rate. In an independant study (i think it was engadeget.com), Sonly ranked third at 16.4% behind Asus (~14.5) and Toshiba (~15.5). Hp was the worst with failure rate more than 30%. So it would be your call on taking up the service plan. For peace of mind it would be good to take up the service plan and preferabbly the Accidental damage protection. Sony Screens are generally vunreable to damage and so accidental damage protection helps over there, cause cost of replacing the screen is gererally 50% of the cost of the notebook.

The tracking number which you got if for Fedex. Goto Fedex.copm and track. If it was shipped on the 5th, i'm not sure if it will be available as yet but u can give it a shot.

Welcome...I will say I know nothing about this SolidWorks program, except what I read off of their site, so you never know the 2009 version may work with Windows 7...might want to try installing it someones machine to confirm or maybe go to the SolidWorks website and see if they have a forum to confirm.

If you are wanting the Indigo colored CW, it ONLY comes with the GT230m...I did notice that they (Sonystyle.com) have the Preconfigured CW in Indigo for $849.00 which is says at checkout that it is "in stock" and ships 12/7...I would guess you are not gonna beat that price anytime soon, especially since the Indigo doesn't sell anywhere else, except on SonyStyle.com...except maybe some local Sony Style Stores. From what I heard Sony rarely ever does any discounting of it's products.

 

The keyboard skin looks pretty nice. Did anyone see it in white?

 

What do you guys make of this processor? Do you think it would still work in the CW?

This is one of those situations where upgrading to one of the "better" CPUs that supports VT might make sense, so you could run SolidWorks 2009 in XP mode.

I'm running SW 2009 on my desktop system now under XP, but I think I'd have to get another (student) license to try to load it on the laptop, so I doubt that I'll be trying it. Besides, CAD work just isn't much fun on a small screen. I'm used to a 24" monitor, and when I was forced to only use my Dell M90's 17" screen, it was just painful! But to run it on this even smaller Sony...

 

i would highly suggest that you try another HDD if it works and the Sony HDD is at fault, i would make a huge commotion and make sure they get it fixed right away, hopefully getting an engineer sent down since its only been 5 days.

its really shocking to see Sony openly giving an invitation to buy a different system elsewhere. shame Sony, didnt expect this from you, whats really disappointing is the point that even if they gave a $100 coupon it lasts till dec 24th, even if they say said that instead of keeping customers on a list of long backorder they thought it would be better that we cancel it, they should atleast extend it till the end of jan, since someone said that sony rep said they will get something(new parts, updated systems or whatever) by jan, so it cant even be used to buy a new cw when parts come back. Come on Sony , you can do better than that.

I have a question, Is it possible to buy it again?, since im overseas, buy gonna get my CW from US, and dont really know anyone that could buy me an upgrade to win7 ultimate, do you think someone(like you, or anyone who has already bought an upgrade) will be able to purchase it again?, i dont mind transferring money to someone to buy it for me just as long as it can be done ill be happy.

well, i guess we will be getting our CW's around the same time There is no confirmation whatsoever that officially announces there will be any spec upgrades but from the various users's here who have told us of their chats with sony rep, we are getting mixed answers, some say they're stock will be back with same specs, some say there will be upgraded systems or new vaio's as some say so that might mean 1) that there will be a spec upgrade, which can only mean SONY REFRESH, if once sony gets refreshed, they call get refreshed. 2) sony SR and FW might be getting replaced with newer models.
All we can do is just wait and see what happens, i will say 1-2nd week of jan we will find out.

as another user has said earlier, most of as got or will get P8700 only for the VT, 2.2GHZ vs 2.53Ghz isnt a really big jump and its going to only make a very minor difference since both have 3mb cache and 1066 FSB, and ur specs are more than enough to run your tasks smoothly, so dont sweat it , if you want you can upgrade, but i dont think its worth upgrading unless your gonna be upgrading to P9500 or similar since it has a 6MB cache to give that a boost jump over the P8700 but even then, that would be for really really high CPU hungry programs. Just to add on, the P8700 will only cut of 2-3 secs off the P7450 speed wise so its not really a big jump.

seems we're all using same computers , as someone earlier noted, i was also getting the same sony style crashing, something to do with the adobe flash player crashing and a debugging pop up coming up .

 

Has anyone here on the east coast bought a vaio? How long you think it takes to ship to Ohio?

 

I'm in Ohio. I had an estimated ship date of December 8th, but it actually arrived the 5th. It was shipped out on the 1st so do with that what you will.

You can go to UPS or FedEx and type it and for an estimated ship rate and date.

That's what I did. I get mine on Thursday. lol and 2nd day air would be Weds. I guess ground is only 1 day slower haha. Gotta love New York to Minnesota... but darn there is a snow storm coming here so hopefully its np.

I am not actually,
I plan to use most of the programs(like that web browsing thing, and other bs that videos said lol) and see throughout the week what I don't like and just uninstall that way. I'm kinda excited to use a computer that has software in it. I've been building computers myself since I was a kid and finally getting a system that's already built since its a laptop lol instead of always having nothing.

Hopefully it's not too slow out of the box but I think new tech will always just blow old tech away so I'm excited.

Yeah, I am planning to do the same and not mess with it since I came across some posts saying they ran into some difficulties. In the mean time, I guess I'll look around for some bluetooth speakers / mouse. If you know of any good ones, let me know !

I'm afraid not. They track our purchases, and limit the number of copies of software, desktop or laptop machines we can buy through the university each year. I think you can guess why.

 

Mine is yet to be built too... they havent even charged my card...Come on already...!!!

 

But this isnt bluetooth...using this mouse would mean using one of the 3 USB ports...!!! And that might be hassle at times unless you are using a USB hub or something...!

This is my first post. First of all I'd like to thank all those who have contributed to this thread. This is the best site for laptop discussions. End of.

I have been given a laptop replacement card and I've made a lot of research thus ending up with a shortlist which has Sony Vaio CW and Toshiba satellite A500-17x in it. Going by this thread, I really want to buy Sony Vaio but the only gripe I may have is with the warranty. I wanted to confirm with you guys, those who have it (lucky sods ), does the standard warranty which comes with this model, is it international? even if it is not so, can I buy an international warranty for this model?. I'll be buying it in UK and will have to move to Asia in 3 months time, due to work commitments. Really appreciate if anyone could shed some light on it.

 

If i'm not mistaken, Sony comes with a standard 1 year international warranty. Asus is the only other laptop i know with international warranty. So, the warranty should work in Asia as well but u may have to take it to a service centre yourself if it undergoes any problems. i would suggest speaking with a sales rep to double confirm.

Unfortunately, the last update was when it left Bloomington, CA at 1:17 PM on December 3rd. Well, the next stop will probably be someplace like Columbus, Ohio, overshooting Michigan by a couple hundred miles. Estimated delivery is still on the 8th, tomorrow.
