I have 3 questions, if anyone can answer...

    1) Does the F2290x HDMI output to 24p when watching bluray?

    2) Is anyone having problems with their WinDVD player, that they cant change the advance settings (color)?

    3) Is anyone having issues when listening/watching a movie on the laptop and changes the volume that it suddenly goes VERY low and Monotonous until you retart the program?

Hello everyone, I am about to order the sony vaio f series. however I had some questions before I order it.
    1. If I wanted to add more memory down the road how difficult would it be (1 meaning anyone can do it 10 meaning impossible)
    2. Is there a lot of bloat ware?
    3. Lastly how is playing video games on it? I'm pretty sure it can't max out crysis 2 but how close could I get?
    -Thank You.

Jonorza, I'm not leaving you out but I unfortunately don't have any experience with those questions to give you a solid answer.

    1. I'd rate it a 2. All you need is compatible memory sticks and a screwdriver. There's a small door at the bottom you just unscrew to access the RAM slots. Pop it in and that's it.

    2. There are various Vaio programs, but all can essentially be used. My previous Vaio to the F21 was an AW, and that was loaded with trial software and a lot of "junk." Further before that, an NR series which was even worse. I actually didn't have to take any of the software off on this unit aside from the Norton trial, which was surprising.

    3. I don't remember the specific setting names on Crysis 2 (I feel like "High" was the lowest label), but I was running on the second-highest setting on native resolution and play at near-30 frames the whole time. Keep in mind that this was before Nvidia's driver update and EA's DX11 patch, so I assume performance may be a little better now.

Thanks for the quick reply :) I'll order the laptop in a couple of days, anyone know how long it takes for these things to arrive? 3 days, 6 days, 9 days?

If you're building one, it gets to you pretty soon after it's finished being customized. Mine (and many others on here) made it a couple of days before the estimated shipping date.

I've just received by F22 CTO and I love it, the screen is absolutely stunning compared to past laptops I've had. I am curious about one thing though. Some icons and some text appear blocky and pixelated on this laptop... is that because the screen resolution is so high and the icons just aren't formatted for this resolution? Does anyone recommend any changes or tweaks to the graphics or display settings?

how is the F22 screen quality- colours, brightness, viewing angles... ? i'm thinking of ordering one and only ask because i've read past reviews of VAIOs and screen quality seems to be a common complaint.

LOL. I wonder where you read those "reviews" ? Sony has produced more brilliant laptop screens than any other laptop manufacturer. All high end Sonys have brilliant screens, with the exception of last year's US F series models.

The F2 2D screen is one of the best laptop screens there is in the market regardless of price. The contrast is the highest of any laptop out there, its brighter than most high end notebooks, and viewing angles are also well above average. Only the colors are about par/slightly worse than other high end laptops that cost more than the F2.

P.S. If you read the whole thread you will find many posts about the(excellent) screen quality.

You're probably thinking of the Vaio S, which according to many reviewers (and my eyes) has a slightly washed-out screen, particularly for the price point. The current Vaio F, on the other hand, has a MIND-BLOWING screen. It's like nothing I've ever seen before.

So what are people's thoughts on the extended-capacity battery? How much height does it add to the machine? Does it make it any less stable while sitting there? Anyone have it, and wish they didn't? Anybody not get it and wish they did?

when you say "so bad" what exactly does that mean? On the F series page under 2D it says 4-5 hours

I have the F 3D and I only get around 2 hours. And where does it say 4-5 hours for the 2D ?
Maybe for the dual core models, quad cores won't last that long.
In Asia the 2d with i7 is rated for 2.5 hours and the one with i5 3.5 hours.

On the US website (quad-core only), on the configure-to-order page, click "more info" under the battery options. Sony claims 5.0 hours of battery life on default settings, 4.0 hours of max brightness, and 3.5 hours of DVD playback. For the extended battery, Sony claims 7.5, 6.0, and 5.0.

From what I've heard anecdotally from owners, these battery life claims are nothing short of preposterous.

I can only speak for the F11. The extended battery more or less doubles the charge. The battery's extra cells prop up the back of the computer, actually making a bit of a better typing angle, and the ariflow is improved since there's more space below the vent holes. The extra battery life does improve the mobility considerably, there's less concern about running out in the field, and one can keep the regular battery charged up for further backup.

I think the extended battery is a good investment for students, and for professional users of the system.

For all the people that have F22's already, have you tweaked the color settings of your display at all? Some videos I watch just look a little bit off but I'm not savvy enough to mess with the settings myself, so I was just wondering what's working for everyone else?

Just received a new VPCF2290X and I seem to be unable to get the colors right on the screen
    1. The yellows have a tint of green
    2. The flesh tones are not natural -

I've tried calibration and it then looks OK - once I re-boot it reverts back to the original out of the box look.

Never had a problem calibrating a screen in the past.

I'm just about ready to give up. The unit is as follows:

    Customization Details

    6GB (4GBx1 + 2GBx1) DDR3-SDRAM-1333 ■High capacity battery
    640GB (7200rpm) hard drive
    Intel® Core™ i7-2720QM quad-core processor (2.20GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 3.30GHz
    Blu-ray Disc™ player / burner
    Genuine Windows® 7 Professional 64-bit
    Black
16.4" 2D Full HD LCD display (1920x1080) with LED backlight
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M (1GB VRAM) dedicated graphics

    Any ideas

    Thanx!

    Hi:

Unfortunately had to return the machine. The Windows 7 file was corrupted (in 1 week --- not my fault) and support had me bring the machine back to day 1. I didn't have much on the machine as it was new and being tested but did lose free Portal. Lovely machine but didn't really have a choice. I may try another or just get a gamer desktop now. We'll see.

The F22 screen (1920 x 1080) is the best I've seen on a laptop and is a strong selling point. (Interestingly, the Sony SA with its 1600 x 900 is "cheap" and getting bad reviews --- low contrast). The F22 is really a good bargain --- especially when Sony lowered the price to $799 plus $70 for Blue Ray (only 4 gigs or RAM but 1920 x 1080 and 7200rpm drive and "free" Adobe software such as Elements and upgrade to 540 card if you can trust them).

    Hey,

I have a problem with my new awesome Sony Vaio F22! :(

I`m really in love with it but the webcam stopped working since Windows Uodate made a "critical update". When I`m searching for new drivers it says that the Webcam Driver is up to date.
But it`s listed as "unknown device"in the device manager. Last time when Windows made the Update I just restored Wondows to an earlier point. After that it worked. Windows Update is not activated but the restore point was after it downloaded the update and wanted to install it at the next restart.
So after I restarted my Computer it didn`t work again. :(
I can`t restore it anymore because than it says there is an error with Windows Restore. :/
I googled my problem and tried to uninstall the driver and install it again but it didn`t help at all. :(

I hope you can help me. Thanks!

Same problem. Bluetooth mouse never worked out of the box nor after recovery to day 1 as directed by Sony Support. Neither will the update for the Wireless LAN Driverinstall: (Atheros) 9.2.0.427 after download and attempted installation the message : "update programs that failed to install" was displayed. I retried a month later and same problem. I checked the blue tooth mouse works just fine on other laptops. No mouse, No bluetooth devices such as the GPS data logger will work, just using laptop's mousepad instead.

I'll ask one more, other than the FAN noise do you guys hear any other noises coming from the laptop ?

Would be really glad if other F22 owners gave an answer on this one, need to know if i send my laptop to be checked or not.

    Thank you.

The noise originates from the top right corner of the laptop, it occurs mostly when i open a program or when a task like Windows update takes place. Its hard to describe how it sounds, the best thing i can say is that it sounds like 'Clicking'.

edit: i am 100% sure that the noise is coming from the hard drive, after some searching i downloaded a program called 'HD tune pro' to check for any errors and to see if benchmarking the hard disk would make the noises appear more frequently, i didn't find any issues with the hard disk (from the program) but i did notice something.
The program has a 'tab' which is named health and all it does is to pull the SMART data from the hard disk and display them, i noticed that every single time that i hit the 'update' button which fetches the SMART info from the HD, the 'clicking' occurs ... well only a fraction of the 'clicking' (like a single click) that i can hear normally but that's the noise i am having trouble with ...

Any ideas what that might be ? After that 'update trick' i figured out i am more confused and i feel a bit silly ...

How loud is it? When I replaced the stock 5400 rpm Hitachi HDD in my MBP with a 7200 rpm Hitachi HDD, I was surprised by how much louder it is (whirring and clicking and wooshing). It's not loud, but noticeable. But it's totally benign; I think 7200 rpm HDDs are just noticeably louder than their 5400 rpm counterparts.

I have next to me an Alienware m11 with a 7200rpm hard disk , cant hear a thing. However because hard disk from hard disk can be different that's why i am looking for somebody with the same exact laptop & HD to tell me there experience. What troubles me the most is that nobody else mentioned anything on this thread regarding the noise of the hard disk on there F22, if it was something that everyone was experiencing i bet someone else would be annoyed too by it .

Well, every once in a while I'll hear the faintest click from the bottom right of my unit (palmrest area) where the HDD is situated. This probably only ever occurs once an hour, if even that much. I have the 640GB 7200, and the noise does not concern me one bit. It sounds pretty routine, in my opinion.

Hi I am also having an issue with (Atheros) 9.2.0.427, when I use Vaio update it says not installed but when I check the driver in device manager it is showing 9.2.0.427 installed it's like Vaio update does not know it's there.

Does anyone know if you can download the latest nvidia driver for the graphics card in the f22 or do you have to wait for sony to add one to vaio update. I used the auto checker from nvidia and got the message I need to get one from my laptop manufacturer sony. Is there a difference?

Hi all has anyone tried a clean install?, I have on to a ssd drive most things ok but the battery care option no longer showing in control center and no fn keys available and working except the volume ones I put in every driver from the sony site. Unless I have installed in the wrong order they have left something out. Wanted to do a clean install on a spare win7 ultimate version that I have without the bloatware :) . Can anyone help.

The bad news is, my MBP seems to be self-destructing. The good news is, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a F2390X! Specs are in sig (also got the 750 GB 7200 rpm hard drive and 6 GB of ram). Price was a totally-reasonable $1249. Case is matte black. I went ahead and ordered it with Fresh Start. Got a bright green keyboard skin to keep my wife and kids happy when they're on it.

Is there a way to reduce the gamma of the screen? Also is it possible later to reset those settings?

Just got a Sony F22 (discontinued version - deeper discount in-store compared to BB online's price for the same F22) from BB. Really love the screen!! I was wondering how/where did you find your Monitor's HW ID? I checked on my Device Manager... And I only get a "Generic PnP Monitor" and under Details tab, I see Hardware ID = CMO1601 and not the longer string you mentioned.

    Thanks in advance!

It shipped! It should be here on Tuesday the 18th. *happy dance*

So what should I do with it first? Play Starcraft II? Play Mass Effect II? Watch Zhang Yimou's Hero?

    *another happy dance*

It really is a breathtaking work of cinematography, isn't it?

I figure I'll do that to really test out the screen and sound system, then SC2 to see just how much horsepower the 2670QM/540M combination has (massed carrier carnage!). It's going to take a week to re-download all the DLC for ME2 anyway, so that can wait.

What are the primary changes in the Sony F22 and F23? (Sorry if late to ask).

I noticed Best Buy's F's are now listed as F23's. Tx.

I think this has been discussed before. Anyway, I believed everything is the same except for the updated/newer/faster i7 Quad processor. From 2.0 GHz to 2.2++ GHz.
