Welcome aboard, glad to have you. For the speakers, did you try switching the settings to either the S Force Surround or Dolby options in Vaio Control Center? This seemed to help my and others' sound experience on this unit.

And yes, the webcam is pretty bad. :p

WOW. I had no idea that this Vaio Control Center existed. It made a HUGE difference in the sound. SO MUCH BETTER! Thank you for that!
By the way do you know what the battery care function is all about? Should I enable the feature?
My old HP's battery pretty much died because I always had it plugged in and never really used it as a laptop. With this one I'm charging the battery to 100% then draining it down, basically dont plan to plug it in unless I need to charge it. Is this good or bad for the battery?

    Thanks!

Within the Vaio Control Center, there's also a battery care function. The general consensus is to set that to 80% if you keep your unit plugged in most of the time. Also, I don't think you have to bring the charge down and up again repeatedly for this kind of battery as it actually isn't good for it. I'll try to find the link later (or someone may beat me to it) regarding this discussion; currently headed to work.

I'm glad the sound has improved for you as well, by the way. :)

Hello all, im going to get the VPCF2290X CTO ordered here within a couple days, just a few questions.
Has anybody tried sticking in another 2.5 hdd into the cdrom tray? I got a intel 320 ssd that i have waiting to be put into the original hdd slot.
Or better yet can somebody tell me what size the slot is so i can get a ebay adapter, or if the cdrom uses a sata connection?

The CDrom slot nowadays is universal, any of those Ebay adaptors will work including this one eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices You just have to swap the rails and tag from the CDrom.

For HEAVENS sakes make the Recovery DVDs and CHECK them before installing a new boot drive! Those DVDs are your full factory install.

I found some tips for noise and cpu consumption hassles. (My model is F2290X USA sonystyle)

Basically from factory setting, World Community Grid program is installed.

So almost always it runs in background and consumption your cpu and other resources.

This you can check at resource monitor. wcg_c4cw something wcg_ processes are all about that.

    I found 4 of them.

Problem is, this is mainly the reason of fan noise. Because this comsume cpu heavily.

So, just delete this in control center-program -uninstall.

You will see fan noise is drastically reduced immediately.

Interested in buying this laptop but some questions.

    1. What is the outer chassis made out of? I'm guessing it's plastic but it also looks like aluminum or some sort of metal because of how smooth it looks. Is the inside matte or plastic?

    2. How hot does the laptop run? Where are the vents located? Basically I want to know if the palm-rest area (left and right of the mousepad) is going to start accumulating dried up sweat gunk like my current laptop does.

    3. Are they selling these at Best Buy yet? I'd love to see one in person.

    4. How long does the battery last off charge? I'm mainly interested in how long it can last in battery saving mode but any sort of test is fine by me as long as I can get SOME indication of how long it can last.

Is there a video review of this anywhere? I really want to hear how loud the fan can get on its fullest settings. It can't get any louder than my laptop...

    1. I think it's plastic for all models of the F2.

    2. My particular configured model probably will run the hottest possible in this series (2820QM, GT540M, HDD), and you only really feel the warmth on the left side of the palm rest. It's noticeable, but not unbearable, and my temps on anything under higher-load gaming have never gone over 80 degrees. The fan exhaust is on the left side of the unit.

    3. Best Buy indeed has a matte black version for I think $1,249.

    4. Mine stays plugged in, though I've heard battery life hovering around two hours depending on your configuration.

Hello, I'm looking for some help here. I am looking at the Sony VPCF226FM/B and I think the screen on it looks amazing. I am having trouble deciding if this is a matte or a glossy screen. It has the color, the brightness, and the crispness of a glossy screen, but no reflections. I'm also looking to pick up a Sager NP8150 and I'd like a screen to compare to this one, I'm just not sure which one it would be. I've always been a fan of glossy since they have so much of a better picture. This screen confuses me though since I'm not seeing any reflections or glare.

I also just recently picked up an external monitor, the Asus VE228H, which to be honest, looks like crap next to the Sony Vaio laptop. This screen is for sure matte and looks very dull. Now I'm confused again, because this monitor got such great reviews and I don't like the look of it at all next to this laptop screen. It's not as bright, sharp, or colorful. Any ideas for an external monitor that would give me the same picture as the laptop? I figured you guys would know best since there would be other owners of the Sony here. Also, does anyone have the part/model number of the actual display screen? Thanks for any help guys. Esp if you can help me with the first part since I'm trying to figure out which Sager screen asap.

Edit: I had posted this in the Sony Vaio F series thread originally and was told it was the wrong place, oops! I did get an answer for the first part regarding the screen. I was told it is a Matte screen which shocks me due to how great it looks and how bad it makes this Asus monitor look. I suppose I'll go w/ the Sager Matte screen and hopefully it looks like this laptop and not the Asus. I reposted here in case others were wondering, and also still looking for a different external monitor.

Yes its a matte screen. And the Hardware ID of the F22 2D screen is CMO1601-N164HGE-L12. Screen made by Chimie Inolux. And what's your budget like for the external monitor ? You could try getting the Dell U2311 ultrasharp with IPS screen or the newer 2312,2212 depending on size. They start from around 280$.

    *phew*
I just read through the whole thread before I went ranting and raving with problems.

    First things First.
    [IMG] [IMG]
That's what it was day of getting it.
The new color profile ( Pg 18 ) looks nice but I can't really tell, it's probably just a plesebo effect. This screen is stunning though. I was in shock that it had the clarity of a glossy screen but none of the reflectiveness. The 1080 actually makes a difference here and I feel like I might as well make this a TV replacement while I'm at it.
The enhanced audio ( Saw it while reading through ) is much better than S-Force. It sounds a bit weird at first switch but, this is how my techno and trance and stuff is suppose to sound like.
I was going to go off about audio drivers but then I realized the laptop is made in such a way that you really have to jam the headphone jack into the computer to make sure it's in all the way. I've only been struggling with that for the last 2 days -_-

Now, I only have one problem.

2 Days ago I was playing Team Fortress 2 super maxed out with zero problems. Now, it's giving me trouble when it has to render more than 6 models and when any bullets ( particles ) start going off.

I haven't installed anything outside of a Direct X update for Mass Effect ( That shouldn't be messing me up ) and a Windows Update. And I just tried restoring back to the day I got the laptop. I also set up Nvidia settings for specifically TF2. But, what I found out is that no matter what I do, or what resolution I drop the game to, it still has the same problems. That is, rendering more than 6 models and particles.

My Nvidia Drivers are up to date and so is every other " Important Update ".

    Can someone help?

FIX'D : CHANGED THERMAL HEAT STRATEGY FROM SILENT TO PERFORMANCE IN VAIO CONTROL CENTER.

Since I already got started posting, I might as well post my full impressions sooner/later.

I'm not sure exactly what may be causing that; I personally haven't had any problems with gaming on my unit yet.

When you say latest Nvidia drivers, are you referring to the ones off of Nvidia's website? Updating to those significantly improved performance on one of my main games (FFXIV).

Actually, I fixed it. Just by changing my Thermal Heat Strategy from Silent to Performance. Thank you though. It's amazing what that small, almost hidden, setting can do.

Oh yeah, that would do the trick. :p
Also try gauging the performance difference between the "Normal" (forgot the name) and Performance thermal settings. From experience, I couldn't notice a significant gain but the fan was going quite a lot more frequently and louder in performance, so I just switched back. In the Windows power options, however, I keep it at high performance and it seems to work out okay.

Can anyone here do me a huge favor? I promise this won't take any more then 5 minutes.

    1. Download speedfan 4.44 ( Download SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer) and screenshot (or just write) the default temps for everything on normal usage and the normal fan RPM. In other words, what it would be at when you're not doing any stress-heavy work.

    2. Download prime95 ( Prime95 (32bit) - 25.11 Download - EXTREME Overclocking) and run a blended stress test. When the fan goes off into maximum RPM (aka, the loudest it can be), again, do post a screenshot of the default temp for everything and the fan RPM.

Since I'm not lazy, I took a few minutes to try that with my F11. The temperatures are kosher, considering the CPU is hotter-running, and the air circulation less, than on the F2X.

P.S. I don't know or care about the fan speed, it's noisy or not-noisy...

    Hello guys,
I am having an issue with my VAIO F22S1E, a day or two after using it a strange noise started appearing from time to time (or maybe that’s when i noticed it), the sound seems to originate from the top right area of the laptop and it occurs mostly when some process is being done (I open a program, windows updates, windows boot etc.). I would guess that it is coming from the CPU. Anyone else with the same problem? I am asking to figure out if that’s a normal thing or if I need to send the laptop to Sony
    Thank you.

    Hi Guys

Quick question for the techie brains here - I have a VPCF22C5E which I am really pleased with. However, the latest update from Vaio Update seems to be consistently failing, it is the Wireless LAN driver (Atheros) 9.2.0.427. I've tried to install it manually (download from Sony and then run it), which appears to complete successfully, but it remains on the list in Vaio Update - wondered if anyone else has had the problem or could suggest a fix?

    Thanks

    Matt.

100 Celsius is the temperature of boiling water, and 0 is freezing; consider the CPU temperatured to be on a sliding scale between the two.bAnd there ARE metric convertors online.

It depends on you configuration. If you pick the VAIO Premium Display, you will have a matte screen. If you choose the VAIO Plus Display, you will have a gloosy screen. I have the F2290X (this model comes w/ the VAIO Display Premium only) myself and am very happy with the screen. It has very rich and vivid colors and the black level is very high and is actually the highest black level in a laptop right now (1000:1). The horizontal viewing angle is very good but the vertical angle is just ok, average for a high end laptop, but definitely much better than the midrange and low range laptops. Mind you, the VAIO Premium is display is superior to the VAIO Plus in every category.

I will agree with you that glossy display is better, although this is subjective. Other people prefer matte screens as they can't stand light reflections on their screens. If you really want a good glossy laptop screen, then go for the newest MacBook Pro, it has a glossy display and good viewing angles and colors.

After some more searching i think the sound comes from the hard disk rather than the CPU. Still , can anybody else hear these sounds or i should take it as a faulty hard disk and send my laptop to sony ?

    Hi. I have 2 issues.

    1. Is this F2290X model has capable of playing 3d bluray disc and hdmi 3d output?

    2. I bought samsung S23A950 120hz 3d monitor. Then does this laptop's graphic card, gt540m can output 120hz to real 120hz monitor?
What do I need then? I checked hdmi-hdmi cable to this monitor does not give 120hz and it's maximum is 60hz when 1920 * 1080 resolution.

    so (laptop)hdmi -> hdmi-dvi-d(dual link dvi) adaptor -> dvi-d cable -> 950 monitor can provide
    120hz option in window7->screen setting -> advanced-> screen refresh rate when just 2d game and 2d web-surfing?

Hi. Purchased the F22 226/FM in the US. It's a really nice machine and the screen is one of the best --- why I got it really. What concerns me are little "glitches." Blue Rays not playing properly sometimes, slow boot times (2 minutes), few reviews of machine (even by gaming sites), error messages on occasion (Windows did not close properly when it did), the F23 coming out very soon, and such.

I might be able to live with the above if not for noise/fan issues. During very light use, the fan is quiet. Modest usage turns the fan on and it's fairly loud. Game and it gets annoyingly loud. And the machine gets hot anyway. I'm worried about reliability related to heat and probably ever increasing noise. (The Asus G74 seemed much better in this regard but has a poor 1600 x 900 screen and I have no confidence in Asus support.)

Any advice for a new buyer (the machine can still be returned but I don't think I have a lemon), especially with regard to noise/heat? Any fixes and should I try to run quiet, possibly slowing the machine?

    1) Bluray not working is a software issue. If you update your playback software or buy another program all BDs will work.

    2) Slow boot time and random error indicates some issue, boot time is very fast even with the standard HDD on F2. Less than 50 seconds (more like 40 secs)
I would suggest you do a Windows Clean Install ASAP.

That might help with the fan noise and heat as well.

I also have this problem. I called Sony Support in Europe. They told me is fault of my system because it is not the preinstalled one. I told them it is preinstalled one but upgraded to Ultimate. And that's the problem. I don't belive this, and I have to deal with it :p
