A crappy way to get around it is to very slowly lower the monitor in the last couple of inches before tablet mode. The screen is pushing down on some computer keyboard keys before the keyboard deactivates -- this is why you can't use the virtual keyboard. I asked on the sony community forums and was told it was because of a warped chassis (you can probably see a slight bend in the computer towards the middle) and to take it into a store (To probably be send back).
I think many of the 15's are going to have this issue.

first off, sorry if this is a no0b question that might result in a "did you search it" response.
Got my flip 15 SVF15N190X yesterday and got it home and cloned the 500gb HDD to a SanDisk Ultra Plus 256GB SSD and it wont boot with the SSD. Cant make any changes in the BIOS due to restrictions. the cloning was successful but when i look at the SSD in Disk Management it doesn't show the main partition as a Boot partition. So i was thinking of doing a format and trying again with Recovery Media on a thumb drive. if anyone can provide any insight or assistance to this matter i would certainly appreciate it! -
Welcome to the forum, ticholas
All questions are welcome. Concerning your problem, I don't think we have a definitive answer for you in this thread, though I started at roughly page 40 myself.
Cloning W8 from a UEFI machine (with GPT disk) is tricky and not all cloning programs are up to it. There are MANY programs out there that claim they can clone GPT disks, but I haven't tested any of them myself recently. Cloning to a smaller drive (smaller than the original) poses an extra challenge some programs can't meet because of tricky partition shrinking.
I installed with VIAO Recovery on a 480GB SSD using a USB stick (created via VAIO Recovery program) ; I had the 500GB HDD before as well. A few of us here have done Recovery installs on SSD and not one problem to report thus far.
Cloning should work though, if the cloning software is up to cloning on a smaller drive and is W8 + UEFI capable. I read that Macrium Reflect free could get this done, but I haven't tested it. Others here may have viable suggestions for you...
Good luck
Edit : please see my next post (#955) where I asked another question -
-
Wouldn't Sony be able to deactivate the hardware keyboard faster, via some sensor detection they could program into a firmware update ? If enough people complain, perhaps they'll make it happen. Getting returns will surely get their attention though, but it's kinda sad for those returning... :-(
==========
@ticholas. I had more time to think about your problem and have one more question for you :
Was the SanDisk SSD placed inside the Flip when you tried to boot from it, or did you try to boot with it via USB ? If it was via USB, then it could very well be Secure Boot related ; try turning the feature Off in BIOS (UEFI) and then try booting from it again. Secure Boot would not be a problem if the SSD was inside (connected directly via SATA controller).
About the main partition not showing as bootable : I don't have the Flip out right now (it's a X-Mas gift so I keep it hidden during the day), but this may help : newer systems don't boot from the main system drive/partition (where Windows is installed), but from a special UEFI system partition instead.
HTH -
Mark, thank you for the input. I tried directly from the SATA connector and it said "a device needed to boot is missing" I have not tried from usb. I also tried disabling secure boot with it connected via SATA. I think I may just need to format the drive and do a Recovery method.

Hey everyone,
at the Moment i'm realy realy angry...
For those you don't know my history:
- ordered my flip at the first day it was availiable
- it received in the first week in November instead of 22.10
- after one week it was defect, the fan was defect
- at this time it wasn't availiable at Sony Store, so i had to wait
- yesterday i became my replacement
Now the best: Yesterday i have heard a frequent click - it was the fan - to seconds later was the flip shout off
I thought about a one time error, but today again... so i pressed a little bit at the Keyboard above the Keyboard and the fan gets up...
Now i'm very pissed, i can't see a other product at the market which statisfied my requirements. So i don't know what to do now... but i can say one thing: not again a vaio flip!
Since October i have no Notebook... i could cry...

Hi everyone.
I've just received my new flip 14A and since i've bee occassionally reading this forum i'm aware there are various issues to solve and updates needing done. Would anyone with sufficient knowledge and experience of the flip be able to put together a brief list of essentials to be done once the vaio is received, e.g.:
- what updates are recommended, should we update to 8.1?
- how to turn off auto brightness
- is there a solution to the fan problem yet or should we all hassle Sony now until they fix it?
Plus anything else of relevance. I'm being a bit lazy not reading through everything but it is 96 pages now!
Thanks to everyone on here.

Well then it's out of comfort zone then, as far as the cloning. I do read that some machines refuse to boot from a cloned system when a different disk is detected. I have seen cloning programs that offer an option to install to different hardware, but those are $$ versions. There could also be a way to get a cloned disk recognized by booting a Windows repair disk, but this is something I have never done.
Dooing a Recovery install should be successful. By the way, these Sonys make it easy : when ready to do the Recovery, just shut down the Flip, insert Recovery USB stick, press "Assist" button adn then choose the desired option to do a Recovery. No need to use Power button and then some "F" key to boot from USB because the "Assist" button does it all for you. Same technique if you wish to boot to the Recovery Partition (shut down, then press "Assist" button and then choose appropriate option). -
Mark, should I format the drive in windows first or will there be an option during recovery?? Thank you again for the help.
-
An idea for the 15A guys with the problem in tablet mode. Maybe a little thick sticker could help? So that the screen rests on the sticker instead of the keys?
-
I ordered the one on the Sony web site but through the local company store in Philadelphia, 15A with 16gb, 1tb hard disk, 2800 display, upgraded video card, what I thought would be a good system for the next couple of years. I thought the upgrade on display would be good for school and my classes that I need good graphics for. I spent 4 hours on the phone with a total of 12 different Sony Reps. nobody can give even a reasonable answer. They simply refuse to ask questions why, one guy said he was afraid he would lose his job, what kind of company do they work for when they are scared to ask the questions. Like why can we not get product for 2 months, even at Christmas time, Bah Hum Bug Sony. Sony is trying to be the Grinch that stole Christmas and doing a very good job. This will be the last Sony product I buy, I do not know now if I will keep it when I get it. Last date yesterday they gave was December 26.

Regarding SSDs - I recovered from a USB key - super simple, but looooooooooong process. I'll bet it took the better part of 2-3 hours. It seemed like forever. I didn't even bother to try and clone the drive, I'll admit.
I've been mostly surfing for the last hour or two, and my predicted battery life is 7:43 hr at 76%. Is it correct? Who knows. With installation of stuff and surfing I seemed to be on track to get ~6-7hrs of battery life. I'll take it. Haha- after playing games for 70 minutes (okay, I admit it - minion rush) Im down to 51% battery. So much for high hopes! -
-
Hi ticholas,
Sorry for the delay in responding ; been away most of the day/evening. I see you are *recovering* as we speak . Good stuff !
About your question on the format thing : I know you don't need that answer anymore, but I would have told you to just delete the partitions/volumes you had on the SSD before doing the Recovery. Or, just do it as is with the 5-7 partitions on it and let Windows clean it all up for you as you go. Deleting everything first might have sped up the install a little, but that's it. I stuck the SSD in straight from the box, uninitialized / unpartitioned and this actually makes it easier for Windows to install from Recovery.
Yes folks, doing a Recovery install is long, almost as long as that initial install (almost but a bit faster with a SSD drive), and then you have all those updates. And then 8.1
But doing it this way allows Windows to align and install everything the way they should be. Cloning is faster, but a) doesn't always work and b) can allow tiny bugs to creep into the install.
Let us know how the system is working -
Intel HD Graphics 4400 - NotebookCheck.net Tech
NVIDIA GeForce GT 735M - NotebookCheck.net Tech -
Raw GPU v GPU power is less then 2x difference. But the intels GPU has to share it's 15W TDP with the CPU, giving a dedicated GPU a great advantage. Using a dGPU also clears up TDP that can be used by the CPU.
Most of the graphics power gain comes from available memory bandwidth, this is a point where the 735M is very limited (730M would have been better: double the bandwidth). See the difference going from Iris 5100 to Iris Pro 5200, the only difference here is adding 128MB L4 cache at 50Gb/s + 50Gb/s bandwidth. Yes, the 735M is better. But it doesn't transform the flip even near a gaming laptop.
How is the fan with an 735M installed?
I can only speak for myself, but my fan is almost always off when web browsing (not watching videos) or doing programming work or (light) CAD drawing (No rendering etc). When using the CPU for more than 20% load for more then few seconds puts the fan on. Loud.
How is the battery life affected by the 735M?
If you "disable" the 735M on battery, how much is the idle usage of the 735M system?
I can get down to 4,09W on battery, min brightness (auto brightness control off), Wifi on, lot of programs and chrome tabs active. How much will a turned-off 735M add to that number, how much will it affect battery life?
I'm very likely to send my flip15 back: for 2 reasons: M.2 128GB SDD (128GB is way the small, I can't use my older SATA 256GB SSD.) and The keyboard is hard to read with backlit in (most) light conditions (Turning off the backlit solves the problem but creates a problem in dark conditions and Sony has no easy (keyboard) shortcut for this). Maybe I reorder with 500GB SATA and Black version for the kb problem (Although I do like silver laptops more). If someone can point out that the 735 does not affect battery life for more then few %, I'll order one with 735M too.

On my old laptop I liked to use luxrender and leave it running all night in order to get a render of sufficient quality (its a non-biased render engine) as it would render very slowly on my dual core pentium with integrated graphics laptop. Now if I use luxrender then its super fast in comparison but the fan is on full blast. I couldn't leave it on all night, but at the same time the render now only takes an hour or two with the aid of hardware acceleration and the 735M. It's a shame the fan is driven purely by the CPU usage and not temperature. -
Hi all,
I use WiDi, that means Wireless Display (also compatible with Miracast, that I understand is the same thing under a different name)
I started using it out of the box, sync ok, perfect.
Then, I updated Windows from 8 to 8.1
I updated to Windows 8.1 and the wireless display stopped working. I tried upgrading drivers, I tried and tried and in the end I wiped the drive from the recovery utility and got back to winwows 8.
Does anyone with Windows 8.1 have the WiDi working? I would like to know of at least one success story before attempting updating to 8.1 again just to find me into wiping the hard drive and reinstalling Windows 8.
I have the 15 with 512ssd, 735M video card, 16GB ram, silver.
(Ordered in Italy, same delays as everyone noted, ordered on 11th oct, received on 3rd dec)
Apart from the alt-key stuck in tablet mode (easy solution: lower screen sloooowly when going tablet mode) and some visive nuances (gray keyboard with backlight under good ambient light renders the keyboard unreadable) the pc works well. No noise from fan, touchscreen is ok, enter key is ok, battery is good, etc.
Thank you all, and thank you again! -
Welcome to the forum, ggus
Nice Flip you have there ! Glad you like it. I have a 14 with limited mileage, but so far I find it is exactly what I was hoping for (fan Ok here with BIOS update, touchscreen fixed with calibration tool, etc...)
I don't use WiDi, sorry. I did notice something else after the 8.1 upgrade and I haven't figured it out yet : Windows Maintenance Center has two messages about Bluetooth drivers not being compatible with 8.1 and telling me I should reinstall them. That's strange because 1) I have no indication of any problems in Device Manager, and 2) I paired Bluetooth headphones without a problem.
A few days after that, a friend called me up with strange problems : I set up her Asus laptop a while back and now her wireless multi-printer would print wirelessly but would not scan. A few questions later I realized she had gotten the 8.1 upgrade via auto updates (yep) so now her Brother printer software needed updating as well. Funnily, she also had a message popping up about Bluetooth needing new drivers.
8.1 has turned out to be nightmarish for many, at least for the time being. Way to go M$...
Now Microsoft and Intel need to get together and fix these issues fast... -
You can update the Bluetooth drivers using the VAIO update utility. I was getting the same message after upgrading. -
Hi
I spend the half day to read the whole thread, thank you for sharing all your experiences.
I need to decide if I should order the 15A with 8 or 16 GB RAM. Does anybody have the 15 with 8 GB, and is it equiped with 1x8 GB or 2x4 GB? Thank you!
Best regards
Martin -
-
I indeed received a multi flip with 2x4GB.
Below the black cover is a second 4GB module as well.
The 15 has 2 slots(up to 2x8GB) - Nothing soldered. (Running in dual channel)
The 14 has 1 slot (up to 8GB) - Nothing soldered.
The 13 has up to 8GB soldered.
Note: These are DDR3 L modules, 1.35V instead of the default 1.5V !! -
The problem isn't a dealbreaker -- I can get into tablet mode with a working touch keyboard with just a bit more effort. But it's frustrating to do that after spending $1500.
I'm going to a Sony store on Monday to get the accident/extended warranty.. I may not feel like returning it until a few months down the road after Sony has fixed the problem (and also hold out for a possible software fix). -
Some posts earlier written, i reinstalled a 15A with Windows 8 Pro and upgraded to 8.1 (no Recovery) and so far everything is working good.
Althought there are some minor problems:
1. Vaio Update Utility does not find drivers and is redirecting me to a Sony website with a Server 500 error. (so i took the drivers from sony.at - but no sony-tools are available)
2. Today i noticed, that the core i7 is running at 2,39GHz all the time. (also in battery-mode) The batterylife is around 5-6h+ with WLAN enabled, the fan is quiet most of the time, so i'm not sure if the taskmanager and several other tools are showing a wrong value. (?)
3. Display: There is a little bright spot on the screen in the upper left (as someone posted before), but it is not visible if you sit in front of notebook.
4. The Crucial M500 960GB SSD (latest firmware) is not running with its full performance. 470MB/s read / 270MB/s write and only 70% IO performance if you look on other benchmarks. The notebook is still running fast, but i'm wondering, what is causing the problem. Any suggestion? Maybe sony.at does not list the most latest driver-versions...
The owner does not notice any of the four problems above, so if there is no solution, it's no problem. -
But anyway... she has it now so nothing I can do except fix broken programs and incompatible drivers (done by 8.1).
Thanks for the tip on getting the Bluetooth drivers from VAIO Update ; last time I checked, they didn't have them (3-4 days ago) and they weren't on the Sony support site either. I did find the latest Intel drivers elsewhere but haven't installed them yet, since nothing seems broken.

ticholas ? Everything Ok with the Recovery install ?? -
FYI and a heads up for others : when ordered with a 128GB SSD, the 15 has only one SODIMM slot so it can take 8GB max. This is because the 128GB SSD is a special one (M.2 connector) and the motherboard used for that drive only has one SODIMM slot (with metal clips, not a soldered stick). One member here opened his 15 with 128GB SSD a day or two ago and posted pictures in this thread.
Any reason why you'd need 16GB of RAM in a machine like this one ? Heavy photo or video editing ? -
Thank you
I want to buy a i7 with 2880 screen, 750/16 SSHD (good performance, but will upgrade to 1 TB SSD later), Nvidia 2GB and at least 8 GB RAM. 1x8 GB would be easier/cheaper to upgrade to 16 than 2x4 GB. I saw the post about the 128 GB SSD "issue", thanks.
It will be a desktop replacement for me, because I don't want to do my photo editing in my home office, want to be more flexible. 8 GB should be enough for now, but you never know
Tomorrow is the last day in Switzerland to get the 4 year warrangy for free, so I think I will order it; even after I read all the problems the people here have - you will never get a 100% perfect computer, imho. And a 15" pen enabled notebook is hard to find, Wacom would be much nicer, but I can live with N-Trig.

Hi everyone,
I am not sure if this question has been asked before, but can anyone share if it's a good idea to buy a screen protector for the vaio flip (especially for flip 15)? Has anyone had a scratch on his/her screen? I am just a little worried about how the screen holds up to the scratches. Thanks in advance. -
Just returned my 15a for a number of reasons:
Poor keyboard
Screen would freeze and would force a reboot
flimsy feel
Poor HD performance
Massive CPU lag compared to my other computers
Minor screen defect
Poor viewing angles
I loved the design. I really wanted this to be my first work/play tablet/laptop but it just isn't there yet. The last straw for me was trying to upgrade to a 256gb SSD but the issues trying to get it to work in the laptop were too much for me to continue. So, I returned it and went for a top of the line Apple MacBook Pro 15 with Retina and the nvidia 750. -

So I'm looking for opinions:
I am buying a new laptop in 2 days. Going to the Microsoft store or a Best Buy and taking it home with me. I don't know whether to try the Sony flip again or get something else in the hopes that it is better. I've been reading on here and have noticed that not many of you have had a trouble-free time with the flip, including myself, as I had to return mine after it died in the first week. I really loved the design, but the Aspire R7 has a similar design and looks perhaps more sturdy? (I'd have to play with it in person to be sure, but this is my impression from youtube videos). Then there are good reviews about the yoga, but I don't think I can get over an exposed keyboard. Then of course I could always just go for a regular laptop, but after a few days of the flip, I can't imagine using Windows 8 without a touchscreen/tablet option. Either way, my current laptop has one more battery charge left, as the charger broke in half today (and it's not worth it to buy a new charger because the laptop itself has been on it's last leg for a while), so I NEED to buy something to replace it.
So what are your opinions? Is it worth it to try the flip again and take a chance on having a noisy fan, a screen defect, another dud, or some other of the issues we all seem to be having? Or should I try something else? -

Hey guys,
I ordered my multi Flip today with the 500gb hdd, because i wanted to upgrade it by myself with a Samsung 840 evo 256gb ssd. Does anyone know if it affects or even destroys the warranty of the device if i do so ? I know i maybe should have asked earlier^^ -
I have not encountered nor I've seen "warranty void" stickers while taking the bottom off (See page 92). Please make a picture of inside the device (with the backcover removed) from your 500GB HDD model because the 128GB SDD version has a M.2 connection only. Upgrading should be no problem IF you order a regular HDD device. Note: 7mm height drives only.
-
@ smoerijf thx vor the quick reply. I will take a picture of it. Originally i wanted to order the 128gb Model and upgrade it with the evo 840 256gb. but after reading this thread, i changed my decision because someone said that the 128gb Modell has, like you said the m2 model which is not compatible with regular 7mm drives in case of upgrading. Now I ordered the model with the 500gb hybrid because then you should have a normal 7mm slot which you can use for putting a normal ssd in.
-
With that kind of screen flex, I don't think 'sturdy' is a good way to describe the R7. -
That's exactly what I did and it works like a charm! 2 small strips on each side of the space-bar, It may seem a bit strange but they are hardly visible and not noticeable while typing.
I used a a bit of the side of A 3M Bumpons pad. 3M Set zelfklevende voetjes (Ø x h) 7.9 mm x 2.2 mm Polyurethaan Transparant in de Conrad online shop I could use a bit thicker material, because the space-bar still gets pressed, but the alt (and win, and ctrl) button stick problem is pretty much gone now. I'm also more aware of the problem now, and I flip the flip a bit more slowly. In the last week I only had the problem once, while I used to encounter it 10 times a day.
One warning, if you try to remove the sticker, you will damage the paint (a little bit). Position them carefully! -
-
That flex on the R7 does look pretty significant. For me, I'd be more worried because I'm a lazy writer and always rest my wrist/arm on the tablet when I write or draw. -

Oh nice. So is it correct that this is a normal 2,5" slot where I can put a ssd with 7mm in ?
Or to bring it on the point, I should be able to exchange the WD Blue 500gb with a Samsung EVO 256gb right ? -
I see you have an 735M. Could you maybe check the power usage of the GPU when idle? You can use GPU-Z [Tab Sensors > GPU Power]. It normally shows GPU power usage. (It does for the Intel 4400 at least). And maybe check the overall system power as well. I use AIDA64 [Computer > Sensors] for this.
Aida64 is free (30day trail), it can show details power usages (and temperatures), maybe other programs can do this as well but I use Aida.
I've gotten even lower usage now: 3.82W with screen brightness = lowest, keyboard backlit = off, wireless = on. (2880 screen, 128GB SDD, i5, No 735M, 8GB RAM). I'm curios how much an 735M will add to this number.
*Note: Notebook overall usage is only available when on battery. (It measures battery charge or discharge rates) -

To those wondering if a regular SATA SSD (7mm) goes into a 14 or 15 which came with a regular (or hybrid) HDD : answer is obviously yes. Easier to swap with the 14s because they don't have those two flat cables running across the drive, which need to be disconnected to remove the HDD. Note : drive position in the 14s is horizontal, not vertical like in the 15s. The foil thing is present in both (14/15) and is easy to remove from the HDD and then stick back onto the SSD.Rexor likes this. -
Thank you so much for your explanation Mark ! Now I can lean back, relax and wait till Santa brings my Vaio to me
