Congrats on your Flip, I was wondering though...did you get the high res screen or the standard 1080P one? Cause I am suffering two every minor dead pixels on my high res screen. Might ask about it when I take my flip to the repair center for my key issue...

Yes, you want to go through the Vaio update, and update everything before going 8.1....what I did was after the vaio update was done, I went on the sony support site to manually double check each of the update so I can make sure I have the latest version of everything.

And a new BIOS was released..the R0240DD.....I think yours is shipped with R0230DD like mine.....you will have to wait until the vaio update utility gets updated as well before the new BIOS will work...."Read Mark's post"...

With my flip 15, I can get turbo boost in even balanced mode. Don't know if this is only exclusive to the 15 though.....I doubt it...

    1) I use it in native resolution, no problem touching with fingers....don't know if is because I got small fingers though..lol

    2) I am in the 4-5 hour range, at 50% brightness, balanced mode, and surfing the web and watching videos

    3) No fan issue.....well I really don't know since my flip came with the new BIOS so I can't really compare since I never went through the old one....but fan kicks in a lot of times then settle down....but no way does it kick up to the point it bothers me, when I watch HD movies that is on my local Harddrive...it is usually quiet unless I open up chrome and other stuff

    4) Had no problems upgrading 8 to 8.1

    5) Mine was built around Jan 1st of this year and it shipped with the intel chip, again, no problems there.....

the only problem I have with my flip is the 2 minor dead pixels and my F key falling off....getting it fixed next week.

hi mcopolo ive just ordered a 15a with the i7 and the 2880x1620....is your battery life based on an i5 or an i7 cpu ....if i can get 5 hours out of it i will be happy.....i normally have my brightness really low and tend to use power saving on my fugi t902 ....what has tempted me is there is no other company offering a 15inch tablet with stylus

Thanks Mark for the warm welcome and for everyone for the great feedback.

I'm a game programmer so for me running 2880 x 1620 would be amazing screen real estate for a development environment like Visual Studio, or for MS Excel. When people say they are scaling issues that means to me that they are asking Windows to run in a larger state to make things bigger easier to touch I assume? And if so, is this just for Metro or for everything? Cause that would defeat the purpose for me.

I'm really torn. The screen plus 12 GB would be amazing, and it'll fit real snug in my existing case. All this talk of fragility I'll probably get the extended "pay us more to compensate for our bad quality control" warranty - all of this for $400+ more? Not sure. I really wish some stores would have this in stores so I could see if it's too small or not. Otherwise 14A for me!

    Thanks!

    Thanks mcpolo,

Sucks hard about the F key falling off. But I'm glad to hear you're having good success overall. I noticed in a previous thread you're in London. So am I. Is there any chance we could meet up for coffee (on me) so I can check out your crazy hi-res screen in person? We can meet at Western at UCC if that's easier for you. Otherwise I'm downtown pretty often - we could meet in the library. Please accept my friend request and PM me.

Just something to note on the fan issue:
As we speak I'm rendering a big solidworks model (about 100 - 200 parts) which is not something I often do. At the same time I'm using photoshop and manga studio and my browser. It's running 98% CPU.
And I still don't get it as loud as I got it once during installing windows for the first time :) Sure it's a little bit loud, but it's not disturbing. I'm in the library of my university right now (during exams) and I don't get the feeling that I'm disturbing anyone.
So anyone that was doubting to buy this machine for it's fan noise, after a bios update you should be perfectly fine :)

Also, this was quite the performance test. This will be as though as it gets with my kind of use, and it's holding up great! Not even performing sluggish or anything. I was kind of hesitant before I bought it, if I would be ok with a dual core i7 and a geforce (instead of the quad core i7 and quadro gpu in my previous laptop). So I'm quite the happy guy!

Yeah the scaling in Windows 8 sucks because very few of the software pieces have incorporated the new scaling features so all icons especially are incredibly small. I have a 1080p second monitor and if I scale up to at least see the dialogs and toolbars properly then it scales the stuff on the 1080 so it is gigantic and worthless. Big PITA especially in Adobe apps and Sony Vegas.

I had the flip 15 with the 1080 screen and it is much better to work in with the scaling. I returned it and now have the high rez flip 15 and I like the screen better but the scaling problem makes it almost unusable for me to work on. In metro its great but windows desktop stinks.

I do get an occasional annoying popping in my external speakers which happened on both Flip 15s I had so I am wondering if this is an issue with the Flips or my speakers. Seems like the Flip soundcards are messing up..

Before the Flip I had a similarly configured ASUS with the dedicated Nvida card as well and it blazed through tasks and HD video editing I had it for a month without an issue it was so buttery fast. So it made me decide to replace my desktop machine so I decided to replace it with the flip since it was a hybrid and would be more functional instead of just a laptop with touch screen. But after a month on the 2 Flips there is always some annoying issue. It will be running fine and buttery and then it gets sluggish as hell. Right now it's the sound popping occasional bluetooth keyboard disconnect and the Intel dual band wirless update in vaio care keeps saying update failed. Video editing is sluggish. I wish the ASUS was a flip form factor and I would be dumping this Flip that I simutaneously love and hate. Did I mention that Ntrig is great, but sucks because pressure sensitivity is not supported by photoshop and may never be....

Hello everyone. I have been watching this forum for a few days now and I just want to say thank you for all the great info!

I have a huge problem though. I had the Y2P with the i7/8/256 configuration and I had to return it because of massive light bleed. I really really liked the computer though. But now as I'm waiting for my replacement, I keep thinking about the Flip. In looking at the one in Best Buy - 15A/8GB/1TB hybrid HDD/Nvidia graphics card. I'm just wondering if anyone has this machine and if there are any big problems that can't be fixed with updates.

Also, I'm curious if everything is upgradeable. RAM/graphics card/HDD to SSD? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

In addition, I want to add that I am not running any CPU intensive tasks. Just 1 browser followed by Microsoft Office 2013. It's strange because I've never had such "jumping" battery life remaining times ever in a laptop. I'm not sure if it's my laptop (although it's new), or something else like a driver. I was wondering if anyone had the same issue. My percentage doesn't change, which is normal, but it's just the remaining times (hours/minutes display) that seems to jump and down and is definitely inaccurate.

CPU usage seems to varies from 1% to 5%. I keep mine to a bare minimum. 19-25% RAM usage at all times with 8GB RAM. Again, I keep mine to a minimum as I've uninstalled a lot of bloatware programs. Everything is updated. However, the battery life is still incorrectly jumping around. I'll try your "calibration" method. The question is how can a 5-6 hour battery life capacity laptop suddenly report 8+ hours and then back to 5 hours within less than 5 minutes? It doesn't make sense. I think there has to be some type of software calibration for this if the percentage is correct but not the remaining time displayed. But I wanted to see if OTHERS are having the SAME issue.

I have a 13a which arrived last week - ordered in mid October!!!!

Anyhow - it just will not power on this morning; anyone has this?

Plugged in, power button does nothing.

    Any hints??

Apart from that great machine, fan bit noisy but after bios nothing too heavy - works great with photoshop and the pen

I swear I saw this before. Someone did a weird upgrade to 8.1 around ten pages back and was never able to revive the machine again. I hope they turn up to help you or you find their post...

Something else. Guys, you got me quite hooked on Manga Studio, for which I'm very grateful (though I know I'll regret it soon, with all the work I'm neglecting). I'm no artist per se, though I've done quite a bit of sketching in my time, even an 'issue' of a pen&paper manga as a teen. This feels a bit like cheating after all the watercolors and pastels I've been doing recently, but it's huge fun! I'd advise everyone with an inkling for art to try it, I've been enjoying it a lot. Thanks!

Where is your light bleed coming in at? I was wondering if I was experiencing a minor light bleed area also. I may compare your area to mine & may have to send it back in.

Also, I've noticed that on the Sony website, they sell keyboard sking for the "Fit" computers. The example skin has an area for a number pad, which ours don't have. Does anyone know if there are any skins out there that will fit our keyboards? I'm asking because I love the silver color of my laptop, but it makes the keys a little difficult to distinguish during the day.

Try a different plug, I once had this issue with an old Acer. It worked in the same plug for ages then all of a sudden my laptop would refuse to charge and then I tried another plug and all was well...

Alternatively try the secret battery reset button on the bottom of your laptop, it's a teeny tiny hole.

The fit 14 has no numpad: Keyboard Skin for VAIO Fit 14 - Keyboard Skins Sony Store - Sony US
It looks exactly the same as the flip keyboard. Outer dimensions seem right as well. Not sure, but I guess that should be compatible. Might do the same, as I have the same problem with the silver keyboard ;)

It started in the bottom right corner. Not too bad at first but then it started bleeding in all four. Heavily. When I pushed the screen and cover together it went away. So I assume it wasn't assembled correctly. You have a Yoga?

I need help from you guys. I just replaced the original HDD with crucial M500 SSD in my Fit 14A. I have cloned the drive with easetodo and everything cloned successfully. After I boot up with SSD, my laptop just randomly freeze after 5 mins of use, always hang whenever I tried to restart and I have to power it down by holding power button.

I noticed under my computer, there is C drive and D Sonysys drive visible. Under the disk management, both C(NTSF) and D(FAT) drives are primary.

Any idea how I can fix this problem? TIA

Hey J-Deadly, A couple notes on my rig and general feedback on the machine. I'm on my second version of the Best Buy machine, 15", I7, 1TB Hybrid HDD and dual graphics, since late December. I turned the first one in primarily because of the "light Bleed," what I called a hot spot on the screen. Well, the second one has the same thing, but it's a keeper. I think its a flaw on Sony design and they have issues with the screens. It's hardly even noticeable, just up and left of center, if you have brightness max and have the screen tilted at the right angle with a white background you can see the bleed. I just had to return the first one because I was within my 14 day period and thought I had a defective unit, but the second one shows the hot spot in the same area. Though, now with all the updates I have my max brightness capped by Sony? And only occasionally out of sleep the brightness bumps up and then right back down. With the new max brightness set to almost dim, you can't see the hotpot - Way to fix it Sony, limit the brightness - lol.

I upgraded the RAM to 16GB and huge dividends. Before the memory was 1/2 eaten at startup due to the hybrid drive and OS. You load a few applications and you're pushing it with the 8GB - not enough RAM IMHO. I bought the Crucial memory @ ~ $170 as I didn't want to take any chances with lower memory or non reputable sources on the net, etc. It was a little tricky to snap the cover off the back once the rubber feet and screws were off, but a little patience and its no problem. I've read this voids warrantee - I guess I'm pot committed at this point. Hmmmm.

Extras: I bought a laptop case from the Sony Store as I like the fact that I can stuff a USB DVD drive, mouse, pen and accessories dedicated specifically for this laptop. I have on order an extra power supply on order from Amazon, its a Sony and should be compatible and will find out when UPS gets here. $25.49 is a great price if it works.

I can't justify the extra screen resolution and Sony Store for the price and inconvenience compared to grabbing one off the shelf from Best Buy . For me this is a medium task/go between PC. I can open up most of my programming software and have no issues but I don't see it with the resolution and limitations as compared to a larger workstation. For me I need at least a 17" screen with much higher res and often dual monitors. That's not what this machine is and I'm at peace with that. With all the quirks of the machine I'm absolutely in love with it as it's finally an ultralight that actually has some processing power. I use the touch screen a lot more than I though I would and the tablet mode isn't so often. I've played a few movies through the HDMI and no Hiccup. I put it on HDMI projector and no issues.

I am curious if anyone has upgraded their thermal past on the processor or if it's even worth looking into. I did this on my last laptop and it did bring the fan usage down and noticeably helped. I'm sure I'll be digging under the hood again soon with the HDD clicks and may just remove the heat sink and repaste with some good stuff. I don't see many mod options to the machine besides Memory and HDD at this point? Oh, I need to look into if there are any spare USB ports internally where I could solder in the Logitech nano chip to a USB port internally - I have to look into that. Even with 3 USB ports, their gold and hate to have to unplug something to get something else in. I don't like port dongles and this or that.

Issues I have with the laptop are; Screen Bleed, Green lines across video playback and HDD and of course the Sony/Microsuck Bloatware is just horrendous. Seems that Sony turned down max brightness to fix the screen bleed. I found somewhere the Intel Video driver update broke the video - I had to revert back to 10.18.10.3345 and have good video again. I don't like the Hybrid Drive and feel cheated. Mine clicks when I move the machine and regardless if this is due to the accelerometer induced auto park feature or not, I don't care for it. HDD will get upgraded soon. I'd really recommend to any noob to Windows 8 or on this level of messing with a new setup that they really go through and clean up/uninstall all unnecessary software. Most of it is junk that does the same thing windows already does and are only running extra processes and stealing system resources that will lower your experience.

I think a lot of us happy people with this machine are those who are willing to get their hands dirty and do a lot of work to really tweak, update and understand their new machine. This machine wasn't ready for launch and Sony released it, it's a techno race out there and it happens - at some point you either turn the machine back in or suck it up and just accept the caveats. A lot of unhappy people and a lot of bugs and updates to work through. If you can get through it and get the hardware problems taken care of by warrantee/swap and fix the software bugs/ patches on your own then this is best laptop out there for its class. This is not a plug and play laptop or perfect OS/hardware combo.

It's really a bummer to hear a lot of people having frustrations and problems with these machines. I'm a techy and this machine has challenged me a few weeks to get it set up where it needs to be. For me, that is to be expected with any new machine. But this one does seem to have it's drama. Good luck!

Thanks for letting us know how it went. I've been planning to do the same thing, but wanted to wait until the warranty was done.

I bought one on amazon for the same price. It wasn't a Sony, but it is working well. Since our laptops are aluminum, make sure that the one you get has the 3-pronged power plug.

I saw one video of a teardown and it appears that the processor has a lot of paste on it. You might get some decent results.

Processor is stuck at 0.59GHz max after sleep.
    reboot solves this.
Anyone else encountered this? i'm with the flip 14a, i7-4500

Edit: not only after sleep, but even after some up time.
    i can't play 1080p videos smoothly.
power configuration max power, no more than 50c hot.

@UncleRico: You can get rid of those green lines during video playback by going into Vaio Control Center and turning off X-Reality for mobile. Hopefully Sony will fix that bug.

Has anyone ever had the problem of sound disappearing intermittently? Usually hitting mute/unmute a few times on the volume taskbar icon will fix it, but it's annoying.

@UncleRico : thanks for all that valuable information

Just a few observations and a question, so I'll start with the question : which memory sticks did you get exactly ? It is DDR3L (1.35V) of course, but did you get CL11 like the original, or did you go with lower latency like 10 or 9 ? Just curious ;)

About that *new* brightness thing you have : yeah, we've discussed it here a few times and it is known as "adaptive brightness". I think it is a Windows power management feature (I think), though you can also find it in the Intel graphics parameters. I don't have the Flip right now so I can't give you the exact route, but just go into power settings and you should find it. Windows has it set for automatically dimming to 30% at night, on AC and battery. This dimming is not *visible* when you look at the brightness level, which says 100% even when it's not. You can't manually UP the brightness because Windows says it's 100%. When I looked at the power setting, I had the option to set the brightness level for AC and battery for adaptive brightness. I set it to 100% for AC and now no more dimming at night. When setting it to 100%, you get full manual control back on brightness, for AC and/or battery. Some here have said that adaptive brightness can be turned ON or OFF, but I didn't see that. I just have the ability to set it to whatever I want, which does the same thing, ultimately. There are apparently 3 places where you can tinker with adaptive brightness : I found 2 (Windows and Intel graphics parameters), so perhaps the third one has On/Off and I haven't found it yet. No biggie, 100% with full manual control works for me.

About the TIM (thermal paste) : from what I've been hearing and reading, it's quite possible that the factory TIM and its application are far from perfect. One member here reported a critically overheating Flip CPU (80C+ on 40% load) and I suspect TIM.
I simply want to point out the obvious here : lifting a heatsink would certainly void the Flip's warranty, so my humble advise would be to wait until the unit is no longer covered. And : applying thermal interface material (paste) correctly requires some research and basic skills. It's one thing to do it for a desktop CPU, but for a laptop everything is so much smaller...
But I agree with you that re-applying TIM just might do wonders for a lot of Flips with noisy fans.

Is that after installing the most recent BIOS update? I rendered a small scene in luxrender last month, the CPU usage was 99% and the fan was comparable to a hairdryer.
I thought the popping noise was just my imagination! I noticed it with my headphones, it sounds like they've been unplugged and then plugged back in again quickly.
There is a driver floating around somewhere that supposedly works for supporting pressure sensitivity in Photoshop. You might have to try and do a search in this thread for it as I don't have the link either.

@UncleRico - Thank you very much for all the info/help!! I think you sold me on the Flip! I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out. Good to know that most of the issues I've read about are fixed by updates. In willing to take the time to get everything right as long as it is right in the end. I think I'll go and pick it up tonight!

Somewhere in all my forum reading about the Flip 15A I saw a list of specific bloatware that was safe to remove. I can't seem to find it again... does anyone remember where I might find such a list?

The way to fix the annoying brightness fluctuation is to go into power options and advanced power settings, display, adaptive brightness, disable.

Thanks those green lines are terrible and inecuseable.... The sound on both my Vaio Flips causes external speakers to make loud popping noises intermittently.

Try disabling the HDD protection to get rid of those intermittent beeps and noises:

open Vaio Control Center>Hardware>Hard disk protection

Ok sorry about that. I have a question though and bear with me even if it doesn't help you out as it may help others understand :
I am not a PS user. I've been reading up on it though, more specifically the 32 vs 64-bit angle. Now if I got it right, both CS6 and CC Photoshop install both 32-bit and 64-bit functionalities on 64-bit Windows. On Macs, the install is 64-bit by default. So if this holds water, you should have both and, in theory, should be able to draw in 32-bit PS and benefit from pen pressure with the new N-Trig driver.
There are 64-bit only pluggins available for Photoshop of course. And Macs only run PS in 64-bit form, but that doesn't concern us with N-Trig for Windows digitizers.
Perhaps others here have knowledge on this subject as well ?

Quick question . .which device would be better for just basic internet use and media (no photoshop or gaming)

the 13 inch 128 ssd or the 14 inch 1TB HHD. . these are the 2 choices I have. .

is one of the devices having more issues than the other?

    anyone experiencing wifi issues?. .

sorry if its been discussed but want to see latest info . .

    Hi there mcatt66 :)

Wish I could help, but we'll need more info from you. The 13 and 14 are quite different so much of your decision should be based on how and where you plan to use the Flip. You've hinted at how, but the *where* is also important because the 13 is much lighter, thinner and easier to carry around if that's important to you. The 13s also have a 8GB cap on RAM and the stick is soldered, if that matters, and the SSDs are the newer "M.2" type and are more expensive than regular SSDs, and harder to find right now if you ever wish to upgrade yourself down the road. Much easier to upgrade the drive in the 14 model because of the regular SATA connector, meaning a regular SATA SSD fits in there nicely. If you order a 14 with the minimal 4GB of RAM, you can later remove that stick and replace it with a 8GB stick (it is not soldered on like the 13).

128GB SSD vs 1TB HDD. More questions from me :
    1) How much storage space do you need ? 128GB is barely enough to hold Windows, a few programs and a minimal amount of data. You could add an external drive, but that's extra weight to carry around (if that matters...).
    2) Is the 1TB HDD a hybrid drive or regular HDD ? A hybrid would give you extra speed, especially at bootup. For some people, that extra speed from a hybrid drive is enough to not look for a SSD upgrade.

Wi-Fi issues : I'd say they've been pretty much resolved via updates. There are different Wi-Fi cards in the Flips depending on where you live, but both Intel and Broadcom cards seem OK now.

    ====

Some have said the 14 is a little heavy for prolonged tablet use. Others love the extra inch of screen (it's just one inch though, not a big deal).
Other than that, the 13 has a rear facing camera while the 14 does not (not in North America anyway).
Depending on where you live, I believe the 13 may come with the digitizer pen while the same pen is an extra ($40) with the 14 and 15 models. Here anyway.

I've only handled a 14 so perhaps some 13 owners would like to chime in ;)

Thanks Bruost! I found the setting, turned off and bam - my brightness settings work again.

Jvan, thanks for pointing out the X-reality, looks like Sony Patched this tonight with an update that controls this.

Mark, here's the memory I got; Cruicial , Two sticks of it. I actually ran Crucials system sniffer and this popped up as compatible. Yeah, specs read CL11 and thought about a faster/lower latency/more $$ memory, but why? Over the years of building systems and tinkering I've never felt that I got a return on investment for the uber expensive memory. I've never really noticed. Only time was for overclocking and blahhh... This stuff aint cheap at $86 per stick and wouldn't want to pay much more. And thanks again for the Adaptive Brightness notes. Pretty crazy that these little patches and tweaks really add up. Right about Heat Sinks and paste with regards to walking the line on warrantee. I'm surprised the guys in here haven't gotten done the testing and changed paste with the fan issues. Hmmm. It's tempting.

J-Deadly - Awesome; you've done your homework, know where to get the answers for the tweaks and updates and know what your up against to get the machine where it needs. Stoked for ya - awesome little machine.

Great thread and contributors - awesome...

Thanks for taking the time and giving me a detailed reply. .
I have played with both and i did find the 14 inch to be noticeably heavier
I dont really need the extra inch of screen size ..
I did like the power cord on the 14 better but that is a very minor thing. .

the 13 inch seems to be the better machine .. but i have heard that the fan problem is worse on the 13 and I
I am a bit worried about only having 128gb hd ..

Im not really sure about the hdd drive. . im living in Vietnam at the moment, so it is tough to even get answers to simple questions here at Sony

To be honest, if you're planning on just browsing the web and sending e-mails, you'd probably be better off forgetting this machine entirely, and getting something like a SurfaceRT. What are you planning to use it for?

I specifically opted for this machine because I wanted something which will be my daily business laptop for my web development contracts, allow me to test applications as both a touch/tablet style device and a laptop, and which has a pressure sensitive pen for my amateur art projects. Surface Pro 2 was slightly too small to act as my main business and development machine, and the Dell Venue 11 Pro has "issues" (even more so than have been highlighted about the Multi-Flip).

@UncleRico - I didn't have time to get to Best Buy yesterday but am definitely going after work today. I hope they still have one! I am thinking about ordering the RAM today before I even buy the Flip so I don't get too frustrated if it's slower than I would like. I'm thinking of just ordering the SSD while I'm at it as well. Do you think I can live with the HDD for now, or is it something I'm going to be really annoyed with? Are boot up and shut down speeds slow with the HDD? Also, just curious, is the GeForce 735 card upgradable? I haven't seen anything about anyone upgrading that. Not a huge deal but if I can then I might as well while I'm at it. Thanks again for all your input, It is greatly appreciated.

Everyone - how do I set my internet home page? On yahoo I clicked on "make Yahoo my homepage" but it doesn't do it - it stays as the MSN home page. Is there a setting I need to change?

Thank you. Yes, very perceptive of you, it's the 13A (specifically model SV-F13N1C5E)
I think I'm likely to manage with 256 GB, especially if I keep the installation clean. I'm unlikely to use it for gaming now that I have an Xbox One. Fair point on the SSD. I actually got the price difference slightly wrong - it was +£200 for the 256, and +£340 for 512. I perhaps should have stretched the extra £140.
"Fresh Start" is not available as an option in the UK, unfortunately, otherwise I'd have been all over it like a tramp on chips!

I'd like to do a clean Win 8.1 installation, and I'd be interested to hear from anyone else who has already done it, and any tips or steps to follow. I guess the biggest problem is likely to be the lack of installation media, and OEM license key?

Concerning the bloatware itself, how much is there? Is it the usual crap that Acer and the like install (WildTangent games, etc...)? Are the Vaio utilities the usual unnecessary junk, or are they useful? Is it sufficient to uninstall the unwanted guff, or is it better to start from a clean installation?

Thanks very much anyway, this thread is a really excellent resource, and I hope to be able to contribute to it positively when I have some experience of the machine itself.

Sounds very much like a faulty battery. Warranty claim I guess?
